[Q] LTE Galaxy Nexus not charging, even after replacing USB port - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My phone stopped charging, even though it would say it was charging and the battery icon indicated it was charging. I tried using a different charger and even bought a new battery. Those did not work. I then did some research and found out about the USB port problems with this phone and ordered a replacement cable. I installed the new cable and am still experiencing the same problem. Unfortunately, I am just outside the warranty period and I'm lost on what the issue could be. Anyone with a better understanding of these things have any ideas? Thanks.

I had the same issue, theres great you tube video's on how to replace the usb port...or you could go the other way which is buying a charging dock and transferring files with air droid....but its so easy to replace and so cheap, if I can do it so can you.

I already replaced the usb port. The new usb port wasn't charging either. I guess it's possible that the new usb port was defective, but that is unlikely. What else could it be, the motherboard?

Hi,
I had the same problem of ghost charging, it started with phone not charging when connected to charger and then randomly showing charging...
Now discovered it causes vbus_tuna_otg wake lock, resulting in high system usage in settings> battery and not letting phone go to deep sleep, causing battery drain.

Do you have any idea how to fix this?

Re: |FIX|Ghost Charging Problem
No bro, that's why am asking here... reading all other threads, either u clean out the port or push the tongue upwards or keep using only original charger and it fixes itself...
An trying to use original charger only lets see what happens

Adding in a +1 from me here, had the same charging issue, replaced the PCB today and it STILL won't charge.
Not sure what the hell is next here, throw it at a wall and hope for the best?

I have the exact same issue. My GNEX shows the charging symbol in the notification bar and will connect to a PC but will not charge. In the battery menu it says not charging. I replaced the USB board and nothing changed.

I hope you're able to figure something out. My GNex is still out of commission. I moved to a Note 2 for my phone, but the GNex would make a great upgrade for my wife iPhone 4.

i went through this issue for 3 weeks before i realized that the usb cable that came with my phone was the culprit. i didn't think that it was the cable itself; since i had no issues with that cable connecting to my laptop. and well it also showed a charging state when it was hooked up to my car, AC outlet and the computer itself. i did have a spare usb micro charging cable in the car, but never used it. so i switched to this unused usb cable, and the charging resumed normally. in fact it chaged correctly within an hour.
to prove that it was the cable, i tested the 'bad' cable again over the next couple of days. it would charge slowly..at almost a trickle. on the third day, i went back to the new cable, and the phone charged quickly and normally.
i had already ordered a new battery, and a new usb charge port..but it looks as if those will not be used now-

I wish the cable was the culprit, but I've got tons of chargers and micro USB cables I tested it on to no avail.

I've tested different cables, adapter, and batteries. I have taken apart the entire phone and cleaned connections and cables. Nothing makes a difference.
The only thing I have noticed, and maybe someone can help here, is that under the main board on the top left side of the device there is a bank of gold components. One of mine is black in the middle. It looks like it could be a burn mark but could just be black marker. Has anyone noticed this on a device with this problem or a device that works? I haven't been able to find an image online.

I've seen several posts with users having this same exact issue. I'm pretty much convinced that it is unfortunately prob a hardware issue...Jus my opinion tho.

I spent the day online and on the phone with Samsung. They recognize that it is a problem with the main board since I have already replaced the USB port, but say my only option is to send it in for repair and pay out of pocket.
Its definitely not worth it to send it in so I'm still looking for other options.

[Q] Slow charging via 12v car socket?

Hi all,
With my Samsung Galaxy SII, I used to use the following 12v car socket to USB adaptor found here and the standard MicroUSB cable to charge the phone whilst using it as a sat nav.
As you can see from the specification page, the Griffin adaptor provides 5v @1amp and the Galaxy SII would fast charge as if it were plugged into an AC adaptor at home.
Works in your vehicle's 12 volt power outlet
Charge 2 USB devices at the same time
SmartFuse circuit-breaker protection means no fuses to replace
Super-compact form factor
5 watts per port (5 volts @ 1 amp)
However, the Galaxy Nexus sees it as being charged via USB and as a result, loses charge when being used as a sat nav despite being plugged in.
Does anyone know why there's a difference between the Galaxy SII and Galaxy Nexus?
Happens to me too and I have a 2.1 Amp car adapter designed to charge tablets... and it still looses charge as you use Google Maps in Navigation mode.
I'm currently on a Rezound, but i have a Belkin 2.1A USB car charger and when i plug the phone in to that with the included USB cable, it also registers as "charging USB" and charges super slow(loses charge depending on what i'm doing with the phone)....
yet if i use the same USB cable, but rather then use the Belkin charger, put it through a Power Inverter, then it registers as "charging AC" and charges the phone up in no time.
sadly i could not find any option/setting to manually switch the phone from USB to AC(or vice-versa)... just know that the phone is detecting what's being used to charge it and go from there.
you need the real deal
a 2A car charger that does not act as a USB charger
check out Deal Extreme they got many good ones for cheap
The data lines are being loaded to fool the phone into thinking it's connected via USB.
You need to cut your USB cable and disconnect the two data lines.
But AllGamer's solution is probably easier.
an alternative would be to buy a USB charging cable only, without the extra wires
but now in days those are extremely hard to find
back in the Treo days, it was the opposite, very easy to find charging USB cables, but hard & expensive to find sync USB cables
LOL such an irony

How come it charged via A/C with the exact same setup on the Galaxy SII?
I think it's the other way around, the two data lines need to be shorted in order to trick the phone that it's connected to an A/C charger.
A kernel developer for the HTC Incredible has a patch to 'fast charge' the phone on <1amp chargers. I'm sure a GN developer will do the same here.

i found 2 that were 2000mA(2A) on that site but they don't specify if they'll register as "charging USB" or "charging AC".
[EDIT]: and i just noticed your post above mine right after i replied, but that kind of car charger you're using is different from the ones we want to use. we want to just be able to use a standard micro USB cable and plug it into one of those micro USB charger dongles.

Hard to say since it has no current rating.
But it's more than likely a crap one limited to 1000mA. And in my own testing, they usually fall over at around 500mA and don't get anywhere near their rating.
The good ones that do 2100mA (commonly labelled iPad chargers) are £10-20.
I've struggled so much trying to get a decent car charger that I eventually just bought an inverter and use my mains charger. It's the only one beefy enough to power my phone while running satnav. My current phone is a three year old HTC Touch Pro. I can only imagine the Nexus will be even more thirsty.

on the output you should see:
2A or 2.1A sometimes referred to as 2000 mAh or 2100 mAh
and 5V
don't get anything higher than 5V else it will damage your phone

Car charger with enough juice to keep on charging regardless of whats running?

New to the Nexus, recently purchased from the Play store. On my commute I generally am running Waze (or google navigation) and Audible with screen on auto brightness. With these running I get a slow drain. With these running on my old iPhone 4s, I would get a slow charge (unless it got hot, then it drained). I am using the same charger (capable of enough power to charge a iPad) I guess I am worried about long trips, don't want to show up with an almost dead phone...
I did flash jelly bean last night, still a slow drain this morning on the way in.
Is this just the nature of the phone?
EDIT; disregard, found a prior thread...delete function does not seem to work??

the reason your nexus is still draining with your car charger is that it's only recognized as a 500mah usb, look at charging state in the settings and it will say USB. you can either mod a micro usb wire or the car charger buy connecting the two middle D pins. with this mod your nexus will recognize as AC charger that you can see in the settings.

i have the 5 dollar moto charger and it does really charge at 700mah, enough to charge while using maps, but the blue led is super bright and covers the entire circle. its very annoying at least for me to have a light that bright at night.

Out of curiosity, would there be any way to modify a USB port on the computer to induce the faster charging of an AC port? Is there an adapter for that?
I know there are kernels that allow for "fast charging,"but I don't know that there are any working with 4.1.1 yet

USB 2.0 ports are only designed to output 500mA. If you value your ports I wouldn't.
It is alway important to notice that, no charger will be able to keep the battery level or at least charge it a little bit if temperature is high and phone is hot... This is just the way Li Ion batteries are, their efficiency decreases exponentially when temperature is higher... So, sometimes charger is not the one to blame, but, the climate/sun shinning over the phone + screen on + 3G/4G + GPS = a phone that is smoking hot and a battery working in adverse conditions...
They're work ports so I wouldn't mind too much.
The truth is I don't really mind, because it does charge the phone, regardless of what I do. However, it does so slowly, and I was used to the fast charging of the iPhone. However, I've also +1 the Motorola charger in the car, it's a lifesaver. My battery never dies down in the car.

i've never modded my wires so im not sure if they are color coded. for the chargers though i didnt even use any solder just open up the casing and i just bent the two D pins on the usb adapter that were soldered to the board so that they touch. but yah thats the basic idea just connect those two lines somehow and your phone will recognize the charger as AC.

Working just fine for me, but it is a little bit cold in Brazil (about 58F, the higher the temperature, higher the battery temperature and higher the chances that battery efficiency is down the drain and/or phone just stop charging battery to avoid battery hitting dangerous temperature thresholds where it starts to degrade permanently and if temperature keep increasing, it might even explode).

I did a Palm Pre wireless charging mod on my nexus and HAVE to use a kernel with fast charge settings to get AC. Regardless of cables/chargers/whatever. Most kernels support it, and most popular kernels are running good on JB. My flavor is Trinity

[SOLVED] Is MHL working for anyone?

I've ordered a new S3 11 pin MHL cable for my Note 2 (stock, rooted), however when I try to plug in the HDMI cable nothing happens, this is the second cable I've tried so I'm starting to suspect there is something wrong with the TVOut service in my phone. The phone is charging but no image, I ran a logcat during the event and saw the following:
Code:
D/20:57:36.250 STATUSBAR-Clock( 2734)
onReceive() - ACTION_SCREEN_ON
E/20:57:36.245 SecTVOutService( 1934)
virtual void android::SecTVOutService::setHdmiStatus(uint32_t): :mSecHdmi.connect() fail
D/20:57:36.245 ( 1934)
bool android::SecHdmi::connect()::m_flagHWConnected() fail
D/20:57:36.245 SecTVOutService( 1934)
virtual void android::SecTVOutService::setHdmiStatus(uint32_t) HDMI cable status = 1
D/20:57:36.245 SecTVOutService( 1934)
virtual void android::SecTVOutService::setSuspendMode(uint32_t) TV suspend mode = 0
which makes think the phone is recognizing the HDMI cable but for some reason it is not able to output the image.. can any developer or experienced android guru help with this?
Tried with 3 different TVs, 3 usb cables and 2 HDMI cables. I need to decide if I have to return the cable or not within a few hours
EDIT: Solved, turns out both cable I tried from the online shop were fake. Bought original one from the mall and works fine.

The S3 11 pin adapter works fine for me. It needs to be powered, so hopefully you are plugging in a power adapter in the micro usb port on the adapter as well.
Edit: I guess you are using the power adapter since you mentioned its charging. Anyways, it worked out of the box for me on a Samsung TV at least.

Thanks for the reply, tried it on 2 Samsung TVs and 1 LG but no dice. Wish I had another S3/N2 to rule out my phone's HDMI Service being broken somehow.
Any other troubleshooting steps I can follow? Already tried leaving everything plugged in and restarting the phone, turning TV on/off.
btw I'm not getting the "HDMI cable connected" when plugging in the adapter, just "USB adapter connected" or something like that.

Yes, tried with the stock power adapter (says 1A on the adapter) and plugging it into the PC USB port as well, same result.
EDIT: Also not working with my TF100's 1.2A charger, phone status shows charging 'USB' when going through the MHL adapter, and shows 'AC' when plugged in directly.
Strange...I am using the MHL adapter I purchased for my S3...plugged the N2 in and worked like a charm. Perhaps your N2 is faulty?

Could be, but everything else is running like clockwork..
About the adapter, when I plug it in all the way it says "USB plug connected" but doesn't charge. When I plug it in half way it doesn't say anything but charges.

Thanks, thought about that.. but I'm using all stock (albeit rooted), could that be the issue? I tried reflashing the latest official firmware and trying it without root, still didn't work (retained all my apps though).. don't know if an app/setting could interfere with the HDMI service.
This is my second adapter, the first one I returned because of a loose usb connector it would only hold power for 1-2 seconds at a time and at least would display a "HDMI adapter connected" on my phone but never showed an image on the TV either. This one holds power but completely ignores the HDMI cable.
Same setup works perfectly with my Galaxy Nexus and its MHL adapter.
Strange mine worked like a charm, i dont see you doing anything wrong so am assuming there is either a problem with device or mhl... True formatting the device if finding another s3 or n2 is really difficult
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
I think that the reason is that the Nexus for example use a 5 pin connector, the S3 work also with 11pin and 5 pin connector indifferently but Note 2 use only the 11 pin connector..
I've tested my MHL for Nexus adapter that work with my girlfriend S3 but don't work with my Note 2..so there's something strange..

Is it a stock cable? Either or the cable might be broken. I've had this happen to me with my computer's mini hdmi out port. One cable was broken, the next one worked. Bad cables are common.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
I am running stock rom/kernel and rooted...same as you. No issue with MHL. From all you have tried, I would guess the phone itself, hardware wise, is having an 'issue'.
Hi all, just a quick update.. tried the cable today with a colleague's Note 2 and got the same behavior:
- When cable pushed in all the way, a notification comes up and says "USB connector connected" but no charge, no image
- cable pushed in half way: no notification but phone charges, no image
Conclusion: it's the freaking adapter! Thanks to everyone who helped debug the issue.
Update: Just bought the original cable from a shop in the mall and it's working like a charm! Can't believe I spent all these hours troubleshooting and almost reformated my phone because of this cheap imitation crap I got online (requested a refund btw).
Thanks to everyone and sorry for wasting your time!
Good to hear you got it working!

Glad you got it working, mine should be arriving tomorrow so was hopeful there wasn't a bug somewhere I needed to avoid
I don't think you wasted anyone's time, I've picked up a few things to watch for thanks to this thread.

Both have the same part number (EPL-3FHUBEGSTD | 159) and look almost identical, almost.. since I still have both boxes I took side by side comparisons (see pic).

The fake one:
- Uses black font instead of grey
- Doesn't use special characters for foreign languages (highlighted in red in the pics)
- Box uses matte finish instead of glossy (hence the reflection of the flash on the original)
Very difficult to tell if you're buying from an online source, but once you receive it look for one of the three signs above to make sure you're not getting duped!

Thanks for raising awareness. I wonder if anyone has bought a 11 pin generic adapter to work successfully. And if the ones you got was just poorly assembled or if they are just blatantly made without the intention of it working at all. The OEM ones are seriously over priced.

[Q] Magnetic USB charging Cable Causing Shutdowns

Hi Guys,
I just received my USB charging cable.
But I was just wondering is this cable 1 way use only?
I noticed that if I rotate the magnetic head the other way and try connect it upside down it will turn off my phone.
Is this normal?
Thanks
of course
its the same like on the XZ if you ever build your own dock for it and you put the wires wrong than your XZ was shut down
you are charging a battery with + on + and - on -
and if you rotate the cable than youre going to discharge your battery
your phone noticed that very big mistake and shut himself down.
just dont do it, it will harm your battery
P.S. did you ever charged a normal battery? than you should know what i mean (LOL)
I have same problem!
Now when o connect my usb pt pc with normal cable he have behaves strangely. Very slow to move and crash sometimes the systemUI FC.
Very slow and always have the backlight blinked and dont charge correctly....
Is only me or have some people with this problem?
Thanks
Same problem here.
After plugging the magnetic cable by the wrong side, the phone literally died, and I had to charge it for a few hours until it came back to life.
After that, the orange led is always on after unplugging the charger and when I switch it on, keeps bootlooping in the Sony logo.
Any solution or suggestion?
Thanks!

For bootloop keep power 5 seconds and he pass to bootanimation.
I have now tried four different magnetic charging methods with the Z1s: 2 docks and two cables... NONE of them can charge faster than the phone drains... They just don't work with the z1s! (must be the different 3000mah battery?) Very disappointing to have to keep that fragile little flap open for the usb cable

Didn't work. The only way to exit the bootloop was by pushing the red button in the SIM slot.
HUH! you guys must be very talented, or have a very bad cable...
sony learnt thier lesson after XZ and made the magnetic connector non symmetric so that you won't be able to connect it the wrong way...
i have an original sony magnetic cable i took out from the charging dock, i can only connect it one way, if i try the other way the magnet and pins won't hold...
perhaps 3rd party cables are less idiot proof...
I have bought a couple of these Mini magnetic chargers (not from this vendor, the vendor I bought it look that its out of stock, but are the same)
It work great, and I dont need to bought another cable :highfive: just use the same, Its impossible to connect in the wrong way because as you can see in this pictures, in the first one pin connector its just in the middle of the hole (right one), the one in the left its a little moved to the left, just this little difference made imposibble plug it in a wrong way, because it doesn´t make contact, besides one side has like a logo, that always is in the same position to the screen, I'm very happy with these actually , the time to charge 100% the phone its about 3~4 hours

Hi,
I'm facing the same issue. Did you find a solution to your problem? What did you do to fix it?
Some one swapped used the magnetic charger on reverse
It shut down his phone. He didn't notice. He left it there over night. It damaged his battery so badly that it would only charge up again go 4%
Just don't do it

Don't buy those terrible 2€ cables. Good cables can't be plugged in in the wrong direction!
For issues when plugging the usb will make the phone unusable due to unexpected behavior.
I plugged in the magnetic charger while usb cable was plugged.
It will make the phone usable.
Not sure about the consequences when plugging both, Do it at your discretion.

Same here also. Phone won't shut down properly now. It just reboots and bootloops. Need to hold down up volume and power to reset then press power to restart properly. Made the mistake of trying to connect my phone at night without looking at the phone and had it upside down and backwards. Luckily I had to get up shortly after and realised my mistake. The battery charges but only by usb cable now, and even that is twitchy. I'm thinking of replacing the battery myself. Not sure if my magnetic charger assembly is damaged as well as the battery. Thinking of buying a new magnetic charger, battery, back cover and adhesive all together to cover all my bases. Not sure if worth the effort if the bootloops are software related (already flashed new ftf files and started from scratch - didn't work).
Sigh ...
The solution is replacement...
I reached out to SONY and it seems that when you invert the magnetic charger there is an IC on the MB that gets fried. You need to return the phone to them (Obviously not telling them that you inverted the charger - since it won't be covered under warranty then) and say something like the phone isn't charging using my magnetic charger. (The folks at the India - Mumbai service center were ridiculous and had no knowledge whatsoever about the magnetic charger, so I gave them my charging cable as well), overall it took them 10 -15 days and i had my phone back with a brand new Motherboard.
Hope that helps!

Yea this is the one time I would say its best to go with official Sony stuff here.
too much risk with the cheaper clone ones that you use like a cable since its sometimes anyone's guess which way its supposed to go and if you have plugged it in wrong enough times maybe the battery has gotten messed up or worse the charging circuit.
Id first try a backup full charge and fresh start of the rom just in case there is some sort of battery calibration in there, if that doesn't solve it then it could need service
hello i tried a mgnetic addaptor for microUSB cables witch when attached coud not hold but had a mark on witch way is up. When i inserted the addaptor the wrong way the phone gave a black screen and needed a reboot once i didnt notice that it is the wrong whay and it didnt whant to charge unless i let it fully discharge and then use the original microUSB cable and worked fine after that. I whanted a magnetic cabel for my phone but coudnt afford the verry verry expensive Sony OEM cabel (its worth more than 50 USD whare i live) so i both this guy http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Magn...-for-Sony-Xperia-Z3-Z2-Z1---Black-338682.html works like a charm is cheep and free delivery (to verywhare) and its hard to plug it in the wrong way as it is not semetric.

[Q] Why my LG G3 wont charge or recognize USB if i plug it in to my pc?

Why my LG G3 wont charge or recognize USB if i plug it in to my pc?
yes i can charge it, but i need to power off it and then plug charger and after that it will charge
but i wont charge if its tuned on
what is problem?
is it something with software? software bug?
I use Nokia charger.
and also!
Phone won't charge or recognize USB connection unless battery removed
The only thing that gets it to charge is if I remove the battery, connect the charger, insert the battery. After it runs on its charging fine.

That's one odd issue.. Have you tried it with the LG cable? Did you try to charge it with another pc? And does it charge fine with the wall charger?
Also, what software is your phone running? Did you make any change in your usb pc connection setting?

Ok, more questions: Did it only start happening when you updated to lollipop?
wasn't so clear, do you need to remove the battery when using the wall charger too? And you get the same issue on both pc/laptop?
Did you recently start using the Nokia cable or have you been using it just fine before the lollipop update?
And if you wanna flash it back to 4.4, there's a thread on how to do so in here. That being said, it will wipe your device so make sure you backup everything first.

Chances are that it won't work without the LG cable (or similar). Nokia doesn't run android so I suspect it might be (part of) the issue.
Make sure you pc has the right drivers too. But atm it sure sounds like a cable issue. Could potentially be a bad battery too.

Oh thanks, didn't even notice!
Don't need the original really but an android one would be good. Any electronic shop should have that.
That being said, it's a shot in the dark. I can't say at 100% that it's the problem. There's a chance that it's a bad battery or a software issue. But since the LL update just came out, it was freshly flashed so I kinda rule that one out.
My G3 charges fine using the USB cable and wall charger that came with my Nokia N900.

I'd still try another cable/wall charger. Like I said it's a shot in the dark, I can't tell for sure what the issue is, it can be quite a few things. Just going with the most common here

well i know this is a couple months old, did you ever get this resolved? I have the same issue, although it seems that it sometimes work, I plug it in, and then it wont turn on, pull the charger off plug it back in nothing pull it apart pull battery put back and starts to work. not sure what version I am running its an older rom, never had an issue up until recently.
Am running some testing now, and going to flash to an updated rom and see if that helps.

D852 / CM12.1 Official / QPST mod to enable AWS
I'm having a VERY similar (if not identical) issue with my recently purchased G3.
Backstory:
Koodo D852
Had stock Lollipop out of the box.
Root+TWRP
Added AWS on 3G via QPST (confirmed working)
Wiped everything (but the modem, kept the AWS mod) and gone CM12.1 official
The problem I have is this: phone works just fine, until I shutdown. After shutting down successfully, it won't power up again nor charge. Doesn't matter if from the wall charger or from PC.
Here's the ticker, though. If I remove the battery and plug in the charger with the battery out, I then get this screen (picture from another user in another thread)
{

Which is alright since the battery is not present.
From there, however, I can unplug the USB cable, put the battery back in and it will boot up just fine!
It's as if it needed some kind of "boost" to get going. Not very practical when on the road and the need to swap batteries arise (I use the original battery + 2 x 3000mAh Ankers).
Any clue what might be causing this? Everything else's perfect, but not being able to power up after shutdown is obviously a HUGE hindrance.
Thanks!
UPDATE: Well, I fixed this. I started everything from scratch by restoring a factory image. From there, I rooted + TWRP so I could restore the Lollipop full system backup that I had thankfully made. This time, everything works and I can restart the phone without problems.

I had a similar problem with my rooted nexus 5 after installing pokemon spoofing apps. Phone would not charge when connect to pc or be recognize by pc. And wall charger would charge it, but would not show the lightning bolt.
What did NOT work
-Unimstalling apps
-Factory reset
-Wiping cache
-reflashing xposed
- installing battery apps
What worked:
-Leaving phone on wall charger over night. When I woke up it was at 100% with the lightning bolt showing. I could not believe my eyes. It aslo connected and charged on the pc as normal.
