[Q] Paranoid Android preference storage problem - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
I've just flashed the Paranoid Android ROM by WOH (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1912187&page=111) and I really like it.
However, I'm having some kind of issue with the PA engine settings.
The problem goes like this:
1. When I set the global UI settings, I'm asked to reboot, but the settings are back to defaults after the reboot.
2. When I edit the preferences for a particular app, I'm only able to make it work by setting and applying the needed values followed by using the launch button, which finally makes the changes effective. These changes are, however, also reset after rebooting the phone.
I did some searching and found this hint (http://www.paranoid-rom.com/forum/guides-references/256-hint-pa-prefs-does-not-save-changes) which seems to deal with this problem, but haven't had any luck with it. In the terminal, when trying to run the commands, I get an error saying my file system is mounted read only. So I tried modifying the file perimissions in the ES file manager (which also didn't work on some occasions, but sometimes it did), then running the terminal commands successfully, but without any effect on the PA preferences bahaviour after rebooting.
I ended up editing those files manually and removing the backup file (which, I thought, was overwriting the preferences file, reverting the settings to defaults). The ES file manager also behaved very oddly when trying to manipulate those files, once I was not allowed to delete those files, than they disappeared on their own, same goes for renaming.
Finally, I think, the problem is being caused by the properties file being overwritten with the defaults on every boot. So far I've been unable to determine the cause of this behaviour, so I hope perhaps some of you have come across this problem and know the solution. Thanks in advance for that.

[Q] Specific "bugs" when modifying ICS-based ROM ZIPs

Hi, I've always liked to modify ROM ZIPs by just opening them, and then deleting the stuff I had no interest in (say, for example, DownloadProviderUi.apk), and doing that has always worked just fine after installing it (talking about Eclair and Froyo).
However, since the release of GB/ICS based ROMs, if I go as far as to modify just one file - even simply replacing the bootanimation.zip contained within the ROM ZIP, after it has been installed and rebooted, there's no lockscreen (deactivating and activating it again does nothing) and the HOME button doesn't work - it acknowledges that it's being pressed, but it simply doesn't do anything at all (return and recent do) - trying to change its default behaviour has no effect at all. As far as I'm aware, the problem spans across multiple (all I have tested) GB/ICS ROMs and a few different and completely unrelated (different brand) Android devices.
Also, installing those same ZIPs without making any modifications keeps any issues from ever happening.
I'm aware that they can be removed using ADB after it has been installed, using Root Explorer to mount /system as RW and deleting them manually, using Titanium Backup to freeze or remove, etc...
I'm mostly interested in having some light shed on the above issue. -Why- do those ROMs always fail if the ZIP file is modified in any way? Is there no way around it?
Thanks for taking the time to read
EDIT: Just in case, I've already tried searching for information regarding these problems, and other than unanswered to and very scarce comments, I've been unable to find anything revealing in any way - I'd appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction if there's something I've missed.
Are you signing your apks before trying to install them?
The APKs..? I'm guessing you meant the ZIP - if so, no. I could give that a try later and see how it goes...
No, I meant apks, but only because I've had an experience nearly exactly like the one you're describing and it was from trying to package the rom with an unsigned apk.
Ah. Well, I guess if I tried adding an APK it'd happen as well - my issue is I want to edit the updater-script (extract, edit with notepad++, throw it back in...) and/or remove APKs (for example, I have no interest in /system/app/DownloadProviderUi.apk). Like, fire up winrar or 7zip (tried with both), browse to the file, delete, then copy it over the to device and install the ROM - the bug always shows up.
Uncompressing the entire ROM, modifying away and then creating a new ZIP makes no difference, either...
EDIT: No dice - I've taken Hashcode's latest ROM, just for reference:
Untouched ZIP works flawlessly.
Modified unsigned ZIP doesn't have a lockscreen and the Home button doesn't respond when pressed (though it acknowledges being pressed).
Modified signed ZIP does exactly the same as the unsigned one.

[Q] WLAN not working after Nandroid restore on another S3

Hi,
i tried to restore a Nandroid Backup into another Galaxy S3, ROM and Baseband Version is the same.
After Restore everything is fine except WLAN, i can see accesspoints and also can enter the psw but it will not propperly connect to the ap it tells me authentication failure but the psw is correct and it will also not connect to an open accesspoint, something must be messed up with the wlan.
Can anyone help? Else i will use my old way over Titanium Backup but this is more time intensive.
Greetz X23
Anyone? I have exactly the same problem after doing a nandroid restore on my replaced S3. How do I fix this without having to do a factory reset?
Fixed the "Authentication error occurred" problem
I finally solved the problem after trial and error. I found that it was a file called .cid.info in /data that I needed to delete. My WiFi now works again.

Hi. I just registered cause I am trying to resolve this exact issue.
My situation: Cracked my screen on my I9300 (still working and yes, not the t-mobile version but international) and got a brand new replacement phone (exact same model) so I can get my old one repaired.
Did a NANDROID restore and copied internal SD card content (external SD card was simply physically swapped). Everything seems fine, but WiFi is not connecting to any router (famous "authentication error occurred - incorrect password" message).
Flashing a newer version of my ROM (Android Revolution HD, currently on 20.0, flashing 29.0 on my new phone) works fine, WiFi working as it should. So it is not a hardware issue.
So my question really is (as I simply want to "clone" the software layer of my phone until Android Revolution HD for 4.3 is released):
What else did you modify/change/delete to get this to work? Simply deleting .cid.info after restoring from NANDROID did not resolve the issue.
Any hints are highly appreciated. Been playing around with it for a week now (on and off) but cannot resolve the WiFi issue. Checked several forums and googled like a lot, but without any success. What am I not getting?
I am fairly new to Android (6 months), sometimes missing some (to others) essential background information and vocabulary, but happy to learn and not completely retarded.
Thanks for your help!
Have you tried forgetting the networks then reconnecting? Otherwise try renaming the .rev file. Or you could try copying the .cid.info from a ROM where the WiFi works fine to the Nandroid restored data. That might fix it.
I tried forgetting the networks, without success. I do not know what you are referring to by .rev file, and I do not have another device to restore my NANDROID image to, to then copy the cid.info file. So I kept playing around and this is what worked for me:
I found a file called wpa_supplicant.conf in the following directory: etc/wifi
Opening that file revealed some (as I was assuming) device related information (such as device type, model name, serial number, etc).
I renamed that file to .bak and this resolved my issue. I even deleted that file later on.
After enabling WiFi again, the file was not recreated by the system, even after a system reboot. I am not sure what this file does and how it was created, but so far everything is working as it should.
I also found a second file with the exact same file name at a different location: /data/misc/wifi
The content of that file is different, but some of the information is identical. This file contains WiFi AP information (like AP that I connected to in the past). Deleting that file would break my WiFi and would prevent it from turning ON. So I strongly recommend not to delete that file!
Needless to say: Do not make any modifications to system files without a functional NANDROID backup!
So in the end it seems to have been what I suspected all along. Some system file that was related to my old device and that, if identical, would create issues on the new device. But all of this is pure speculation. I am not an Android/Linux expert and simply tried to apply some logic.
I hope that I will now face no more issues. In case I do, I will report back.
Thanks for your help!
So, after getting my S3 repaired and switching back to it (usual NANDROID restore process), I was facing the exact same issue.
The wpa_supplicant.conf file that I was talking about did not exist, so I tried renaming the cid.info and that worked.

It did not work for me. Neither does deleting .cid.info works.
That sucks. It's so frustrating.
Try to play around with it, based on the info in this thread. Make sure you have a working NANDROID backup, to just state the obvious (no offense).
Can you elaborate a little further what you believe caused the issue?
Reflash ing the rom would probably fix this.

[SOLVED] My status bar has disappeared

I'm running Xylon 2.1.1, which is based on 4.2.2
I recently thought it would be great to copy the systemui.apk file, change some of the icons and replace it. It didn't work and somehow it made my status bar disappear. I put the original file back, but that didn't fix it. I then wiped the cache, did a dirty flash of the same ROM and wiped the cache again, and I still have the same problem.
Also I'm using a system theme (Flow) and it's not really applied properly, some interfaces aren't themed, if that helps.
Anything I can do short of doing a factory reset? I know I haven't enabled expanded desktop or anything.
I've reinstalled different versions of the same ROM multiple times and it still hasn't fixed the problem, I'm starting to think there's a bigger problem here. Could I have downloaded a virus? I'm always careful about installing apks but still...
Also is it possible that when I messed with systemui.apk I broke something else?
A re-flash of the ROM should have fixed it so I dont know what to tell you there. As far as replacing system files, make sure you set the permissions to what they are supposed to be or else they mean nothing to the OS. And if your systemui.apk file isnt working right, I would think more than just your statusbar would be messed up.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by setting the permissions, I did "fix permissions" a few times in TWRP. And it does seem like my systemui is completely borked actually:
-No status bar
-No navigation bar (I usually have it disabled because I use gestures, I tried to enable it and nothing happened)
-Aforementioned theme problem
-Can't change the wallpaper from the default phase beam one
I'm getting worried that it's some kind of virus that's sneaked its way in to my other apps. I've tried going through /system/app and /data/app but I haven't seen anything that I don't remember installing. I might try an antivirus but the ones on Android seem to be more focused towards real-time protection and that kind of thing, rather than getting rid of things that are already there.
Anyway thanks for your reply
I fixed it! I'll post what I did in case someone has this problem in the future:
Settings - apps - all - SystemUI
For me there was an option to "uninstall updates" which I'd never seen before, so I hit it and after a reboot everything is fine. I was getting pretty worried there...
You arent going to just get a virus out of nowhere. Contrary to what people believe, viruses are pretty rare on Android. So dont worry so much about Viruses.
You not knowing about changing permissions is most likely what happened. Most file browsers will let you change permissions to a file if you have root access. I use Root Explorer and its pretty easy. Whatever file you make changes to need to have the same permissions the other apk files in that folder in the end.
But I'm glad you got it working.

[LS990 ZV4] LG File Manager gives error, screenshots won't save, Gallery empty?

Repost from Sprint forum area, since this main area is much more active...
I have some weirdness going on with my LS990, still running the original ZV4 with Xposed and TWRP. I've never had any problems, until now, with anything on this phone, it's been fantastic and that's why I leave it on Kit Kat.
Starting yesterday, whenever I try to open the stock File Manager, I get the following error dialog:
------------
Note
Cannot read files. File Manager will be closed. Please check Media Storage enable settings and try again.
OK <--button
------------
Sometimes the dialog is in the foreground and I can close it with OK, but File Manager never opens. Sometimes the dialog appears behind my launcher icons and everything is unresponsive until I kill the running process using my nav bar shortcut from G3 Tweaksbox.
Also, I was trying to take a screenshot to include with this post, but it gives an error (Cannot take screenshot. Try again.) when trying to save it, plus the notification just stays on "Saving Screenshot" and is unable to be swiped away. [UPDATE: Noticed the screenshots do get saved in the proper Pictures/Screenshots folder, but the notification remains "stuck"]
I have also noticed my gallery is now empty, yet I can still access all of my pics from third-party file managers. Plus, when I open the camera and take a picture, it doesn't show in the little Gallery bubble at the bottom of the screen - in fact, the bubble doesn't even work, but yet the picture is saved properly.
Has anyone seen behavior like this before? The only thing I have changed on the phone is flashing the new TWRP 3.0.0.0 yesterday, using the image feature in my previously installed TWRP 2.8.7.0. I've updated TWRP plenty of times and there has never been an issue, but one difference I did notice this time was it asked if I wanted to keep System read-only or the default swipe to make read-write, which is what I did since I have Xposed and it modifies the System anyways.
Hopefully someone out there has an idea how to fix this, I really don't want to start all over, at least not until Sprint releases MM for the G3. The strange thing is, everything else is working just fine. My phone is fully functional except for the quirks mentioned above, root is still there and Xposed is functioning properly. I did do a Safe Mode boot to see if I could eliminate any root apps, but the issues were still there even after a safe boot.
Try sd card write fix on the market just for kicks u mighta lost permissions to the ext sd try switching save point to internal and see if they save
Unfortunately, I'm not using a microSD card, everything is saved to the internal memory. I thought it might be something with permissions, was thinking about trying the "fix permissions" option in TWRP but I'm not sure if that would make things worse. I've already tried a cache and Dalvik wipe, but that didn't fix anything. Even in Safe Mode, nothing changes.
I've searched online and haven't seen anyone else with this issue, it's very strange. I wish Sprint would hurry up and drop the MM update so I would have the perfect excuse to flash back to stock.

Stop apk not made 4 system?

What files or information is being read when you go to install any apk and it revolts and aborts.
It's looking at something.
What file or information in what file is this or any apk looking at?
This should help other people as well.
I have been able to bypass using custom ROM program and installing it directly bypassing the check. Choosing system or framework etc..
Other ways fail.
Turning off signature and or MD5 Checking in the system would be nice to have....
After installing any npk as system it will go in ,but for some reason ..there is an actual need to copy the files directly to the locations ,and then set the permissions.. But if you upgrade? It might go into a failure on screen loop because of the library files.
Killing the program and going back and replacing the upgraded files manually may work.
Sometimes.. But I'm betting on XML or a java component to need resetting as will besides just the library files... Somewhere there is a pointer being placed in a file someplace that does not revert back.. Even if you uninstall and reinstall and then do it all over again.
Sometimes uninstall programs ,don't actually clean everything back out and revert things back they changed in the first place.
It will then take your time to go revert it back and track down errors and things that they changed.
Manually.
I'm referring to that experia keyboard. Everything went in nice and smooth and had to manually set everything. But as soon as I upgraded it... Bang inoperable. Screen came up blank.
Thank you for your time reading this.
Thank you.
