Getting modem.bin and flashing? - Galaxy Ace II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Everytime I flash any 3rd party rom, apart from my providers rom, I can not get any SIM card function. No signal. No IMEI with calling code. #*1234# or whatever gives me PHONE: Unknown and in my settings, baseband unknown. I was reading round the place and Im now wanting to know how i can get my original modem file and get it into a flashable state. Hopefully that will fix the issue. I have the I8160L model.
Thanks!

Maybe try flash fresh ROM.
All available versions are here: http://live.samsung-updates.com/index.php?device=GT-I8160L

try to flash working PHONE part (for example official one) with custom PDA and CSC.

That's because the flashed modem is not for your phone, f.e. you can't flash i8160P/L modem on i8160.
Flash the custom rom and create a tar from phone part (modem.img.md5) extracted from roms built for your model (i8160L) and flash just the phone.tar with odin.
Or write modem.bin.md5 (not the tar!) directly to modem/phone partition using terminal/adb (requires rooted phone):
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/external_sd/modem.bin.md5 of=/dev/block/mmcbk0p13
reboot

What ROMs are you flashing?

Try replacing the "tee" folder of the ROM with a one that actually works!!

Tee folder
Can anybody provide a copy of a tee folder that works, from an I8160? I am in UK

Thanks, had already flashed UK BTU ROM I8160XXMK2 from sammobile via Odin. Flashes fine, but fails to register on network. Searches for and can see mobile networks, shows a couple of bars of signal strength, but will not register. Sim works fine in other devices. Reading elsewhere leads me to suspect modem.

Thanks, Odin 3.09 gives error "<OSM> modem I8160XXMK2.tar.md5 is invalid". I tried re-downloading it but same error. I opened the file in Odin 3.04 using PDA button and did not see the error - however I don't think 3.04 does the checksum test prior to flashing. I'm tempted to just try it in 3.04. Could the modem file have an error? Sorry for delay, have had no internet access over the holiday period.

Use 7ZIP and extract the file

I used 7Zip and extracted the file, then the odin gave another error (invalid md5), then I deleted the ".md5" part and odin accepted and flashed. But i my case the baseband shows as "unknown".
I just wanted to try this because, my Galaxy GT-I8160 mobile network not accessible after flashing cyanogenMod 10.2 and even CM 11. Can anyone tell what's the issue?
Edited: after doing this task, I rebooted the smartphone, then my problem solved.

Bell/Virgin GT-S5660M "No Service" When Using Custom Roms/Firmware.

hello everyone,
Must say without alot of your great posts and walkthroughs i wouldn't of even considered the wicked things my little Gio can do. But i have seem to always have 1 problems when flashing my cell.
I get a "No Service" after 6 hours and can never get it to pick up my Virgin Sim card. I have tried GioPro 1.2 to 1.6, CyanogenMod 7 and 9 and even some Europe firmwares that are supposedly work with it.
So i am assuming that alot of these firmswares/roms don't work with Canada services or phones/areas or is this a common glitch in custom roms. Any help or direction on fixing a issue like this would be more then amazing right about now.
thank you all for your time
Vaughn
after flashing gioprio, it also flashed your baseband. flash a stock rom based for the m model, or flash a baseband only, wich is for the M mode, and you're fine

i have never thought of that, thank you so much. I will report back with my results!
ok this is where you guys start to hate me, tried figure out where to locate a stock baseband and i got a one package for giopro 1.0 (GioPro_v1.6.tar) and my stock firmware for bell/virgin phone (GT-S5660M_BMC_S5660MUGKG3_S5660MUGKG3_S5660MBMCKG3.tar) and finally my GIO_v1.0.ops.
but where about do i locate a stock baseband for the 5660m or am i replacing one files from the stock firmware (GT-S5660M_BMC_S5660MUGKG3_S5660MUGKG3_S5660MBMCKG3.tar) to the GioPro custom (GioPro_v1.6.tar),
i hate to be that guy but i been battling this for a few weeks.

Can you flash a ROM to get European 3G frequencies with a Canadian phone?
I could compile a .tar.md5 of the S5660MUGKG3 Baseband only if you want?
(Flash it through Odin)
Because I have a GT-S5660M model also, so I always keep a backup of Stock Rom in my PC.
SUCESS! for now that is.
I was able to create a AMSS only .tar for flashing using Cygwin Terminal and this command
cd /cygdrive/c/baseband
tar -xvf S5660MUGKG3_S5660MUGKG3_S5660MBMCKG3_home.tar amss
tar -H ustar -c amss > S5660M AMSS.tar
Click to collapse
then was able to flash just the one package, seems to have left the other parts of the GioPro Rom installed.

Can this method be used to enable European 3G frequencies on the Gio?
Was having the same issues as OP - then realized I incorrectly flashed to 2.3.6 (for the 5660), now I'm trying to get back to stock 5660M 2.3.4 after downloading the S5660MUGKG3_S5660MUGKG3_S5660MBMCKG3 hotfile from droidangel - problem being it isn't a one file md5/tar... the rar contains like 9 files, image files and rfs. I've attached the rar contents.
View attachment 1132111
How do I use these files?? If it's not possible, does anyone have a lead on a one file for the stock 5660M 2.3.4 from Canada?
fyi, unrooted, unlocked
Thanks in advance
sob.... thought I had figured it out, went to samfirmware, got excited - their file was a different size from the droidangel...unfortunately same garbage, same list of image & rfs files instead of a single md5/tar

what a jackass I am
I'm only posting this because I have a low level of shame and I noticed a few others while googling who were having the same problem as me..hopefully this helps them
the solution and why i'm a jackass = i was unraring the tar file..hence the contents (image, rfs etc) which were not useable by odin
i was selecting the wrong file... trying to use odin to select one of the files inside the tar... after uncompressing the tar....
brutal... anyway, hopefully this helps others
Help!
Okay guys, Heres my problem... And I need guidelines because im new to all this. I installed the fake ics on my phone and because it started to limit what I could do on my phone I decided to go back to android 2.2. I used odin to go back but I think i selected the wrong Rom for my network and where I live. I live in Canada and I use Virgin mobile as my network. Now that I got Android 2.2 back I never get any network! How do I flash a new Baseband Version? and Where do I get the Baseband version for Bell/Virgin? Also If you could give me the download for The Official Android 2.2 rom and not a custom one.. it would be nice =)
It's going to be 2.3 (Gingerbread) and not 2.2 (Froyo) that you'll want to install.
There have been multiple posts and you should just have used the search function, then asked whatever questions you might have had left.
Get the MUGK3 stock ROM from here or samfirmware, flash it with Odin.
Again, simple, beginner stuff for which there are multiple tutorials. The search function is your friend.

If you are on EXT4, don't use it with ODIN. It'll bootloop your phone.
It's fine if you're on a RFS filesystem

Sobey, I got your message, but really this is the sort of discussion best kept in the thread. If you got your phone from VMC, it's a 5660M. In fact, a GT-S5660 would not work with Virgin at all.
Peteragent5: He could flash the whole stock MUGKG3 ROM with Odin and reformat /cache and /data with the stock recovery.

But in About Phone it says GT-S5660 but ill trust your word. So I should download the Mugkg3 rom and use odin to get it into my phone? and do empty cache and data? Okay ill try this now and let you know if it works. I need your help with one more thing, Last time i used odin I followed a tutorial for where to put each file in which odin slot such as BOOT, PHONE, PDA, etc etc. Can you tell me which file needs to go in which slot? Or is it one package and I just click open package? Sorry man for asking to many questions but itll really help. Also I cant find the ops file!

You could make the "About Phone" model string say anything by editing the proper file. As I've said before: if your Gio worked with Virgin Mobile Canada at all, it a 5660M. The Europe/Asia 5660 doesn't have the proper HSPA bands.
Look up the differences between the different Gio models. Now. Use the search function.
There's also one or two tutorial threads here with both Odin 4.42 and the GIO_v1.0.ops file linked.
The stock rooted ROM I uploaded a while ago, as well as the OEM one from samfirmware.com are usually the "one package" kind. If you're unsure, open the tar (or tar.md5) file with a proper archiving program (7-Zip works well and is free open-source) and have a look. There should be many files, including but not limited to: amss, arm11boot, mibib, oemsbl, qcsbl, boot.img, recovery.img and system.rfs.
Quick recap:
Flash the MUGK3 ROM with Odin.
If the phone bootloops, got in the stock recovery and do a factory reset, in other words, reformat the partitions.
Done!

I did but the thing is i installed Philz, then flashed Phoenix ROM,stuck bootloop`ing, then flashed Zoot's-Wipe-Scripts_SGS_N-II and did a HARD WIPE (full one) and then installed again via philz_touch_6.46.3-n7100 the ROM and still got stuck right after Samsung (As soon as it does the blue circle, mine only makes half and then reboots, then half a circle again then reboots).
By the way,do you know how to check my IMEI ? Maybe is something wrong with my IMEI beacouse before , i had TWRP with Android Revolution HD and i got Emergency Calls Only but i coudnt fix it,no matter what. My IMEI seems good,i mean i have normal numbers but since i remember it is ending in four zeros.

Ok so the only option to get it back working was to install TWRP back and flash Android Revolution HD so i can check the imei in the system, and it shows like this:
004999010640000/01
On the back of the phone and on the original box is another IMEI as follows:
355xxxxxxx4671/1
So clearly my IMEI has been changed/damaged somewhere on the way. Don`t know when, and i don`t have an EFS Backup.
Thing is like follows: If i install TWRP (twrp-2.5.0.1-n7100) and then flash Android Revolution HD the phone works fine, the only problem that i have is the stupid Emergency Calls Only that i can`t fix beacouse everything that i patch or every fix that i try doing it,the phone restarts itself and goes into Samsung Bootloop.
If i flash CWM Philz (philz_touch_6.46.3-n7100) and try to flash Phoenix Rom it doesnt even get pass the blue Samsung Circle, same stupid bootloop.
So my problem is in fact the IMEI ? What do you think ? This is why all of my ROMS bootloops ? And this is why i always get Emergency Calls Only ?
Please help me out Vagsvag beacouse i am loosing my hope here.... This is my only phone and i`ve been trying to fix it since 2 weeks now...

I don't know if you try to flash the modem only over revolution HD via chainfire's mobile odin what will be happened.
For doing this install mobile odin lite http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899 download from end of the page the add-on for n7100 (it's kernel for n7100) also download latest firmware from Sammy or better fne1 (the same version with revolution HD rom), unzip it, copy to your phone and mount the firmware at mobile odin at the place which is saying modem and flash it. Other way to do this is to extract with 7zip the Samsung fw (unzip first and after extract the unzipped .tar.md5 file with 7zip) and take the modem.bin file, copy to phone mount it at mobile odin and flash it. If is difficult to do this post to search at my pc and upload the modem. I have it somewhere.

- ROM-N7100XXUFNL1-20150116192411 (This one was 4.2 i guess) Still bad imei
- XEF-N7100XXUFND3-20140425111035 (This one`s the latest 4.2.2) And still bad IMEI
And all of them (i think) are stock ROM`s (Or at least that i what i tried downloading) From different locations. NONE of them worked thow...
Then i tried Phoenix ROM,no luck there, then i tried Android Revolution HD and still no luck. BUT it seems that everytime i install Android Rev.HD and i press reboot system , TWRP keeps telling me `FIX ROOT etc....` Everytime i install the ROM...hm.... Guess it`s just stupid permissions but it doesnt matter for me. As i had no problems, everytime i installed it,it had supersu in it,and busybox, and rootacces. So it`s ok.
Now i will try what you told me to do,and we will see how that goes. I will reply soon. Thanks again man,you have one beer from me. Your patience is gold for me.

This is the modem of fne1. I don't remember if revolution HD working correct with mobile odin. Some roms don't restart to make the flash. When you mount the modem and you click flash now mobile odin will do restart to flash it, if you see to don't restart is necessary to manual restart to recovery push the power button and select reboot to recovery, this is important, don't do normal restart if it fails to restart do only to recovery to avoid corruption of your installed recovery, after this your phone will restart at mobile odin recovery and will flash the modem. Also check wipe dalvik cache at mobile odin, not really necessary but check it.

Check md5 before flash, md5 is

Also this is a good server to download original sammy fw

Now about donations etc thanks but are not necessary and also are not acceptable , the good feeling is enough

[UPATED]S/N: 0000, Baseband version unknown in Lollipop ROM

I've tried flash the modem via recovery, still unknown.
What can I do?
Tried to delete the efs folder and flashed the modem
the baseband is shown
but the IMEI go to 0049....
If i restore the efs, the baseband will become unknown again.

I had the same problem when I flashed the ROM. But then I found a method to get it going. Here is what you need to do:
Step 1: Extract Modem.bin from official firmware. (I got it from Sammobile)
Step 2: Use Winrar or any other compressing software and extract Modem.bin
Step 3: Use Odin and Flash the same. (Note : You should flash the bin File in Phone not in PDA) :highfive:
Hope it works.

Anyone know if this can be applied to an S4 with custom, rooted ROM & custom kernel? Or does it only work with a stock phone?

It would replace your installed ROM; if you're just looking for the new modem, there's a thread that has it posted in it (sorry, I'm on mobile, or I'd dig it up for you).
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Free mobile app
So, I downloaded the new firmware from SamMobile, since I was using TWRP and the OTA wouldn't have worked.
Link is here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/54333/M919UVUFOH3_M919TMBFOH3_TMB/
I had to restart my download several times to get it to finally download completely. Luckily, Firefox would restart where it failed each time, so didn't have to restart from beginning each time. But, it took quite a while - several hours.
BTW, I did a full NAND backup with TWRP before I started this.
Used ODIN 3.09
Flashed once, but the bootloader and modem didn't take, so I did the double flash, and it worked.
To double flash:
Unchecked AutoReboot in ODIN
Flash the firmware once
Pull battery
Boot holding down Vol-Down button to get back to Download mode
Flash again
The problem with the single flash was my WiFi wouldn't turn on, and when I checked out the versions of the ROM, bootloader, modem using Samsung PhoneInfo from the Play Store, I saw the dreaded mis-matched versions.
Some of my partitions were still NH7. Evidently Samsung keeps a backup of some of the partitions and restores them when the phone is rebooted. Double flashing flashes overwrites this backup.
I rooted with CF-AutoRoot again, installed SuperSU, and was back to where I was.
UPDATE:
Only issue so far is that I had to clear the cache on the Play Store. Was getting a services error.
Rob
Thanks for the update. My own download from Sammobile completed successfully (miracle!) And I am considering doing a phone wipe/double flash/rebuild. May choose stock ROM and freeze the junk. I'm on MDL bootloader at the moment and a fairly old LTE modem.
Before I do anything i have to figure out how to back up my texts (in Slimkat messenger app) such that I can restore them properly into the new environment.

If you flash this firmware from SamMobile. It will overwrite your modem to the newest. It will un-root your phone. And, yes you can go directly to this version from your NB4 version.
So, after you flash this firmware you will have the newest modem. And, you will have to root your phone again.
ROM = ROM
Firmware = Modem + bootloader + ROM

frustrated foh3
This morning OTA pushed the new update to my phone and I accepted thinking there was a lollipop update finally. I had juke woken up and didn't bother to check first.
Anyway, I'm now on FOH3 and am just trying to install custom recovery on my otherwise un-molested phone. I've tried the heimdall option as well as the cf-auto root with odin 3.09 (even attempted the double flash) either I'm doing something wrong with Odin or missing a step because when I hit start I end with 0 succeeded/0 failed and it stays in download mode. When I attempt to reboot to recovery mode, I get the blue text stating booting recovery and then black screen which eventually just goes back to stock.
Is there some other method I need to try when rooting/installing trwp for FOH3?
[edit: I'm an idiot. assumed I already had debugging turned on. I did not. *facepalm*]
-thanks in advance
I haven't flashed a phone since my galaxy s blaze 4g.

because I open the zip file in my pc and have two files:
- SS_DL.dll
- M919UVUFOH3_M919TMBFOH3_M919UVUFOH3_HOME.tar.md5 ( 2.5 gb )

but the other file " SS_DL.dll " for what reason came inside the zip file ?
I read need double flash... with " Unchecked AutoReboot" in Odin... but please can you tellme what more choices I need to check or unchecked in Odin to start flash this firmware ?
and if I need to uninstall kies from my laptop and install another Samsung drivers... or with the drivers came in Samsung Kies its ok to start flash this firmware?
thanks thanks thanks ....

Yes, you unzip the file to your computer. The .tar.md5 file is the one that you browse to and select in Odin.
Uncheck everything in Odin. Then, flash this firmware twice, with out letting your phone boot into the system. After the first flash is finished. Pull the battery. Put the battery back in and hold the Volume Down button while you power on the phone. This will put you back in Download mode. Then, flash the same firmware again.
After that second flash, you can boot your phone into the system normally.

If you really wanted to, you could leave those two checked on the second flash.
However, leaving them unchecked on both flashes will work, and are the easiest instructions to follow.

Read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622790. If that doesnt work try DIFFERENT usb cables (official works best), verisions of odin and different usb ports. Make sure usb debugging checked and power down and pull battery, then put battery back and (while its off) hold just vol down then plug it in to the computer while odins open. If this stuff doesnt work it could be motherboard (its probably not though, dont worry). Good Luck, keep trying.
