[Q] proper Noob help N7105 - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Ive looked around, and read several guides, but I think the sheer volume of options and guides has just confused me more
Is anyone able to detail the steps I have to take (and if possible link to downloads) to root, and put a custom ROM onto my GT-N7105 (LTE on EE network in the UK)
Apologies for being completely thick, and thanks in advance

Hi!
You can use the GN2 TOOLKIT : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923956
It's easy!
Or you have a good guide to root here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032849 (just the second step)
You can download CWM recovery here : http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager choose GN2 LTE
And flash it with fastboot (you need to dowload the Android SDK on the google developer web site)
Put your device in dowload mode ( hold HOME + VOLUME DOWN + POWER, when you arrive on a different screen, VOLUME UP )
Connect your device to your PC,
See if your device is detected, open a console:
fastboot devices
Click to collapse
put your recovery file on the fastboot folder, open a console and write :
fastboot flash recovery <recovery_name.img>
Click to collapse
Now make a Nandroid Backup with recovery and a data backup with Titanium Backup and make a EFS Backup too
After you can choose a Custom ROM for N7105 and flash it with recovery :
Put your dowloaded ROM on the SD card,
Boot on recovery : hold HOME + VOLUME UP + POWER
Choose Install zip from sd card,
Choose your ROM,
Make a full wipe ( Cache / partition / Dalvik ) You will loose all your DATA !! So don't forget to make a Backup with Titanium Backup
To backup your contact, your sms, calandar, .... you ca use Super backup on play store!!
After installing ROM, install Titanium Backup and Super backup from play store and restore your backup!!
PS : I appologize for my bad english

First of all download cfautoroot and extract it and flash via odin in pda tab. You would have to do some extra steps on your own but they are pretty straight forward and self explanatory.
Then flash twrp.tar via pda tab in odin. Name might be different.

OFFICIAL TOUCH - for D802 CWM Recovery here, or the D800 (ATT) CWM Recovery here, or the vs980 (VZW) CWM Recovery here.
ZIP FILES - OFFICIAL - TOUCH: D802, ATT, VZW
ZIP FILES - OFFICIAL - NON-TOUCH: D802, ATT, VZW
ZIP FILES - UNOFFICIAL: D802, F320K, F320L, F320S
NOTE I: The official versions all have loki support enabled (and can be disabled if wanted ).
NOTE II: The unofficial versions do not have the wipe cache bug but do haveUSB-OTG capabilities!
CHINESE MENU TRANSLATION
1) Reboot System
2) Install from ZIP
3) Wipe Data
4) Wipe Cache
5) Backup & Restore
6) Mounts & Storage
7) Power Off
NOTE: The bottom of any submenu always has a right arrow < to go back to the previous menu.
INSTALLATION (Recommended)
1) Make a folder for the CWM Recovery.
2) Extract the contents of the file you downloaded earlier to the folder you just created.
3) Ensure the you have Developer Options enabled.
4) If you already have Debugging Mode enabled turn it off, then back on.
5) Connect your phone and ensure that the RSA Fingerprint message appears, and that you accept.
NOTE: THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP! If you do not get this message and try to continue, you will not be able to install CWM recovery!
6) Open the CWM Recovery folder and double-click the file ends in "...recovery.bat".
7) A command prompt will appear and will go through a process flashing recovery to your phone.
8) Wait a minute and the process should conclude. Press any key to make the prompt disappear.
9) This will cause your phone to reboot into the CWM Recovery!
SPECIAL NOTE: The RSA Fingerprint message can be hard to get at times. After I rooted, it was extremely difficult to make appear. If it helps anyone, I would connect my phone to to the PC, run "...recovery.bat". The command prompt would state it was starting the daemon and then would go no further. If I checked my phone (before disconnecting from the PC) the RSA Fingerprint message would be displayed. If you have checked to always allow your computer, then you will not get the RSA Fingerprint message, but the procedure should still work. This is also true of the official CWM recovery installation.
ALTERNATE INSTALL METHOD (No RSA Fingerprint message)
1) Get a terminal emulator.
2) Get a file explorer (like Root Explorer).
3) Get a RAR app for android.
NOTE: The RAR app is not needed if you are using your desktop PC (and you have 7zip or WinRAR or equivalent) and you move the files to your SD card.
3) Extract the contents of the file you downloaded and put the "g2_security" and "recovery.lok" files here: /sdcard/
4) Open the terminal emulator and type "su" then hit the enter button. (If this doesn't work, then you are not rooted).
5) Then type:
Code:
"dd if=/sdcard/recovery.lok of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery"
6) Then type:
Code:
"rm /sdcard/g2_security"
7) Reboot your phone and enter CWM!
HOW TO ENTER RECOVERY
Method 1: Hold the power button + volume down button until the LG image appears. Once it does let go of the buttons then immediately push and hold them again until recovery boots.
NOTE: The method above will arrive at the "hard reset" area, but when choosing hard reset, it will take you to CWM (without actually resetting).
Method 2: Download the free app "Rebooter" from Google Play. If you have root, you will be able to select to reboot into recovery (among other options).
Credit: Credit goes to Chenglu (xiaolu) and djrbliss who made all recoveries for this phone possible.
WIPE CACHE FIX - UNOFFICAL (RECOMMENDED)
If you flash the unofficial CWM version, the cache wipe will take only 1-2 seconds!!!
WIPE CACHE FIX - OFFICAL
The data wipe is incredibly fast, but the cache wipe is incredibly slow. This fix won't match the speeds of TWRP's fix, but it will greatly speed up the process. This should only be done when switching to another ROM.
1) Boot into CWM.
2) Click on "mounts and storage".
3) Click on "format /system".
4) Click "Yes - Format".
Now when you perform a Factory Reset it should only take about 1-3 minutes (stock ROMs seem to take longer) instead of 5-10 minutes.
NOTE I: It may be optimal to re-perform this method after so many ROM changes, or after restoring to a stock ROM. I do not have enough evidence to support this.
NOTE II: I tested this method using the same custom ROM. Because there was no cache build-up from being a new ROM, I also tested this after restoring a backup of my stock ROM (that had a massive amount of apps and cache build-up).
USB-OTG
A USB-OTG device will be recognized as an external USB device while in the Android OS. However, when in CWM recovery, the
"mount USB storage" in "mounts and storage" does not work. Instead, use "mount/ external-sd". This only works on the unofficial versions.
MISC.
There is an "issue" with the date and time (1970). You can manually change a Backup folder name by connecting to the PC or using a file explorer.

Yes thats the way, just choose hard reset and it should take you to CWM and not reset.
Dees_Troy and I just finished successfully testing his method for the D802. I am not sure when he will post the files, but I bet it will be by today.
So, people now have 4 choices for recovery: A Chinese or English CWM, or TWRP with 2 different install methods.

Thanks.. I think that's a very important information.
Most users wouldn't go there thinking that it might actually reset the device!

[Q] Need help with a soft brick

Alright, so i have a Galaxy s3 (sgh-i747) and i rooted it with philz bootloader
So i was going to install a custom rom, so i had to wipe.
I downloaded the rom, and wiped.
But then i realized i actually never put the ****ing rom on the phone and now my phone has no rom loaded.
I can still boot into download/recovery
I really need help with this, what are my option?
So my phone is not rooted any more i guess because the recovery/bootloader is the default one
I still really need help with this

Do you remember what (stock) firmware or Android version you were on before the attempted installation? Your best option now would be a return to stock. If you were on anything earlier than 4.3 (e.g. 4.1.2 or 4.1.1) you could try using Odin to flash 4.1.1 since you can get into download mode. To do this take the following steps ..
1. Download the required files via the following link <http://fortedge.com/downgrade.html>and extract the Odin flashable file
2. Install Odin
3. Boot into download mode and flash via Odin
OR you could find the correct stock image via the following discussion thread and flash via Odin. This would be a complete stock file that will flash all partitions including bootloader, modem, kernel and system.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
If you were on Android 4.3, then you cannot use the above method or flash via Odin and any attempt to do this will create more bother for you. In this case, you would need to flash custom recovery via Odin and restore the stock recovery image via custom recovery. Please download the stock recovery file via the following the thread ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2658486
If you need any further detailed steps on how to complete this, please do not hesitate to holler.

Download Odin.
http://fortedge.com/downloads/Odin307.zip
Download the Odin flashable custom recovery file via the following link ...
<http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/d2att>. You need one of the more recent images ending in *.tar e.g. the one below
<http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/d2att/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-d2att.tar>
Install Samsung Kies on your PC if you don't have this already (this will be useful for the drivers)
Install the twrp tar file to an easily remembered location on your PC
Extract the Odin zip to get the executable file (*.exe)
Click on the exe file to run Odin
Now boot your phone into download mode by powering off completely then holding down the Power + Home + Volume Down buttons simultaneously until you see a warning message.
Press the Volume Up button to continue
Connect your phone to the computer with a good quality micro-USB cable
If everything has been done OK, Odin should immediately recognize your phone and you should see a message saying "Added" in Odin. If you don't see this, then you may need to check the drivers are properly installed.
Click on the PDA tab in Odin and navigate to the twrp tar file you earlier downloaded. Select this file and click OK.
You should have the Auto-Reboot and F-Reset Time boxes checked in Odin. Please do not check or uncheck any other boxes!
Click on the Start button at the bottom to start flashing TWRP and wait until you see PASS and a green (or blue) box fully displayed. Your phone will automatically reboot after this although it may not be able to boot since you don't have an OS installed. You may disconnect the cable and close Odin after you see the PASS message. If you see FAIL, then disconnect, remove the phone battery and try again.
If you successfully flash TWRP, then you may proceed to reinstalling your ROM.
1. Download the zip file in the thread below <<http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486>>
2. Save to a recognizable location on your phone's SD card. If you can't install files to your phone via your PC, then you may save to a micro SDHC card using another micro-SDHC compatible device (camera, another phone, card reader/writer etc).
3. Boot into recovery mode
4. Select Install from the TWRP menu and navigate to the zip file you download. Swipe the arrow key to confirm installation and wait for installation to be complete
5. When installation is complete, clear your cache and dalvik and reboot system and you are good to go.
Hope this works for you. If it does, please remember to hit the thanks button and let me know.

Rooting Canvas4
USING EXPLOIT:
using an exploit means using an available loophole in the firmware to root...this is done automatically by softwares like MOTOCHOPPER and FRAMAROOT
MOTOCHOPPER
Download MOTOCHOPPER and extract it to a folder in your PC
connect your phone to PC via USB cable
open the folder containing motochopper and start run.bat
a command prompt window will open...just follow onscreen steps
your mobile will reboot in some time....and DONE!!
FRAMAROOT(easiest method to root)
download framaroot app from the xda link given above
install framaroot and start the app
follow onscreen instructions
reboot phone done!NOTE: ROOTING WORKS WITH FRAMAROOT VERSION 1.5 and abv
WITHOUT USING EXPLOIT: this method doesnt use a loophole but forces the root on your device...which means this method is always successful...however you need CWM installed for this method...which can be easily installed using SP flash tools(see above)
FLASHING SUPERSU
install CWM by using the method of SP flash tool
download supersu.zip from above links transfer it to your SD card
boot into recovery using mobile uncle(just select boot into recovery option from the app) OR power off phone...turn it back on while holding both the volume keys along with the power key to boot into recovery
select "install zip from sdcard" "choose zip from sd card"
select supersu.zip and select select yes
reboot phone from the recovery main menu...DONE you are rooted!
Flashing a ROM
Through CWM Recovery
download the rom you want to download from the ROM list given below and transfer the zip file to sdcard
boot into recovery
wipe cache partition
wipe data/factory reset
advanced->clear dalvik cache
mounts and storage->format /system
select "install zip from sdcard"...."choose zip from sdcard" and select the zip file of the rom you just copied
after flashing finishes, reboot phone...the first booth after flashing every rom takes a long time...wait patiently....DONE...enjoy your new ROM!
THROUGH SP FLASH TOOL
same procedure as flashing CWM....just replace CWM with the downloaded SP FLASHABLE ROM
4> Unrooting Canvas4*
open supersu app in your app drawer
goto SETTINGS tab
select full unroot
restart phone and done
*just unrooting your phone wont put it back into warranty...you need to get it to absolute stock factory level to claim any warranty so BEFORE unrooting the phone
just flash the stock rom using SP flash tools from given link
##### Another mention: taking backup of your ROM using CWM
this can be important as if you mess up while using a custom rom or you end up in a soft brick..you can recover using the backup of your ROMi advise that after installing CWM you should first make a backup of your STOCK ROM so that you can have access ti full stock unroot anytime(just restore the stock back up and unroot using supersu...easy isnt it!! no need of dwlding any stock rom)to make backup
boot into CWM recovery
goto backup and restore
create backup->yes
reboot...done!the backup files are stored in internal memory/clockwork folderkeep a copy of this folder in your PC at all times for any emergency that may arise in future(make sure you delete this folder while sending the phone for servicing under warranty)
to restore the backup
boot into recovery
select backup and restore
select restore->date if the recovery
reboot done!

WHAT IS ROOTING???(credits to Amit Taksali sir for this info)
ROOTING : WHAT IS IT?
The act of rooting is similar to yourself giving administrator privileges( as in your windows OS).
You gain access to root directory in system partition. In other words you gain total control on your device.
You may be familiar with Windows OS on your PC, so with windows or linux OS you have got guest user and an administrator. On your android device that you get out of the box the android OS comes only with guest user privileges and all the restrictions of it.
To gain access to administrator privileges and access system folder on your android device you need to root and this act is called ROOTING.
WHY TO ROOT?
If you dont have any other reason to root you should do it for the power of back ups. Tf something goes wrong with your device we normally do a factory-reset and will loose all our data and apps.
Setting-up your device again would be painstakingly boring and repetitive. Today we have various forms of back-ups that help us to restore our device as it was working perfectly before(for ex: an app named TITNIUM BACKUP gives you complete control on your apps).
After rooting flashing a custom recovery will help us a lot to make an nandroid backup of the complete ROM. The major benefit of flashing custom recovery is when flashing custom roms ad other customizations to our current rom. We can make an nandroid backup so that if something goes wrong , all we have to do is restore the nandroid backup and we still have a working device as it was before. We can also remove unwanted bloatware(pre-installed system apps) from our device and free up some space for other usefull apps.
Custom roms and custom recovery are more popular reasons for rooting. The best part of custom roms is that it can breath a new life to your ageing device and also boost the performance. Overclocking your cpu to get max performance can be done by rooting. If your burning through your battery you can undervolt the kernel and underclock the processor, to increase the battery life at the cost of performance.
There are tons of applications that requires root access such as TITANIUM BACKUP, ROOT EXPLORER, WIFI KILL, AD-FREE etc which comes with lots of power.
Now we may wonder why does the manufacturer holds back root access????????????
Most android users are influenced by the software or the user interface(UI) that the manufacturer applies on top of the vanilla android or pure android. Take an example of galaxy s3 and s4.
The manufacturer will provide the latest version of android on their latest device(s4) rather than an older device(s3). They may also hold back an update for older s3. By rooting we can get latest android through custom roms on our older devices(s3) which may attract the customers to buy cheaper s3 than s4. The manufacturers do not want to loose these customers and that is why they hold back root access.
By rooting our device we can also get the latest updates to our device before the manufacturer provides it officially. Sometimes the manufacturer stops updates for older devices as google did for galaxy nexus. But there are many custom roms that have provided the latest kitkat to those devices.
Here we have a huge benefit that the developers of custom roms are not held by any restrictions like the device manufacturers.
For example samsung can never provide you with beats audio or bravia engine to your samsung devices, but we can enjoy the awesome beats audio as well as bravia engine using custom roms.
They will provide you with custom roms that will give these special effects on your device.
WHAT ABOUT WARRANTY AND HARD BRICKS???
Most of the people are hindering to root their device because of damage to warranty. This is not an issue at all as you can completely UNROOT your device back to stock and send ot for warranty without any issues. Personall I have sent my canvas hd without any issues any problems and got it repaired many times .
Speaking about breaking your device, the chances are pretty slim. It mostly happens only when we dont follow correct instructions while flashing roms or playing with the root access. I the chances of bricking device are less than 0.1% once again if you get stuck on bootloop or something like that there are lots of developers on XDA and other forums who will help you to come out of these problems and restore your device to working coditions.
At the end of the day its your money, you have paid for it. When you cant take a PC with only guest user access then why take it with android. Use yor device completely and explore the complete power of android.
HAPPY ROOTING.
CUSTOM ROMScustom roms are modded systems/OS that are made for our device....these can improve our device's performance or looks.....different custom roms have different features...some are faster while some bring another device's UI to our device...advantages of custom rom-renews the cell if you are bored with the old softwares-in case of canvas4...some games dont work on the stock rom...so a custom rom comes in handy if you are a gamerdisadvantages-not all custom roms are perfect...there are certain bugs present in each...

You don't have to root and install CWM again as you have done it once. PureXperia Z2 is already rooted. You have to just install the rom from the zip file. Follow the installation instructions in this post . Good Luck

Both Stock Android 5.0.2 ROM's for download.

Hi,
I have test the TW stock rom, it's fine that you can't decompression this special zip file.
And I found another way to update this RUU into the Butterfly3.
The system will check the file "0PL2IMG.zip" from ext-SD everytime you boot into download mode(Pow+Vol down), so i change
the stock Rom's name and put it to the root of my EXT SD card, then boot your phone into download mode again, it will show up
some words at the bottom of the screen asking you whether to update the system or not.
Be sure you have done the "wipe data/factory reset" and "wipe cache partition" at recovery mode before you do this.
Enjoy~

I have successfully flashed the TW rom from the original link shared by Gixermouse and mrquyen1993. The zip file does give the error but it is meant to be that way (as mentioned by seaturtleSTO).. However, I was still getting errors when trying to flash it on using power + vol down and then vol up.. I had to change the MID of the phone first to 0PL220000 ("command: fastboot oem writemid 0PL220000" in fastboot mode through cmd). I had to then format my external SD card to match byte size of 4096 (initially it was 32Kbytes) NOTE: IF THIS IS NOT DONE THEN YOU CAN'T COPY THE FILE AS IT IS (IN WINDOWS) AND CANNOT FLASH. THE BYTE SIZE HAS TO BE 4096.
After this I copied the file again to ext SD card and flashed it through power + vol down and then vol up. It worked this time !
After the above I followed the guide provided by mrquyen1993 to install the OTA of Marshmallow 6.0 (https://htchtv31.wordpress.com/2016...hat-android-6-0-1-dai-loan-cho-htc-b3-htv-31/). You have to change the CID of the phone to HTC__621 (fastboot oem writecid HTC__621) to successfully download and install Marshmallow.
Thanks everyone for the help and I hope what I have mentioned above will be helpful to others!
NOTE: I have S-OFF only with no bootloader unlocked, no root and no TWRP installed. This works for stock phones but needs S-OFF I assume.

You don't extract file rom by rar because it was embedded certificates HTC.
You can install using adb or hboot
Hi,
Can I install these ROMs using the TWRP restore function? Or install?

I think this only happened because you went from a KDDI ROM to a Taiwan one (which wouldn't work with the wrong CID).
I went from an older KDDI ROM to this one and I didn't need to do anything but the confirmation after download mode.
As for the SD Card, I didn't need to do anything either. I had it formated in exFAT and it just worked.
