[Q] Major battery life issues - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Ok so I've had my GN2 for about a month now. For the first 2 weeks I could easily go all day on moderate to heavy use. Over the past week and a half however my battery has just started to drain so quickly. I get up at 630am with 100 percent battery life and by 9 I have only 75 percent. This is with only browsing my email checking the news and playing a couple songs through Google Music. Does anybody have any ideas as to what might be wrong with my phone? Am I alone with this?
UPDATE: This actually just happened as I was typing this and has happened twice today. The phone goes through the shutdown screen with the Samsung logo stays black for about 3 seconds then started back up.

what ROM are you running?
what kernel?
have you installed any apps lately that might be running in the background taking up a lot of resources?

I see someone else asked what rom you are using, but assuming you are stock, as I am, I have had a similar battery problem. I tried turning off several native apps, and other things without any improvement. I'm with Sprint and was also being randomly dropped from the network, requiring restarts. I called tech support and was about to get the phone replaced, but they required trying a master reset before doing so. That's what I did (with the hardware buttons, not through the software menu), and to my amazement, my phone is better than new! Battery life is what it should be - excellent, and other problems disappeared as well. Just a thought.

What is the combination of buttons for a hard reset

Seems to me it's up&down volume buttons at the same time; power button; home button. You might want to search that to confirm.

Is there any other way to figure out what is keeping my phone like this that doesn't involve having to buy a 3 dollar app

Solving your problem isn't worth 3 of your dollars yet it's worth more of someone elses time or effort?

You're aware that BBS is on XDA as freeware for download, last I knew....Come to think of it...you're not. It is a great tool, well worth the $3USD they charge, and that says alot due to all the $3-5 apps out there that are next to worthless.

Impressions & Questions

I've had this phone for a little over three days now. Overall, I absolutely love it. The only smartphones I've ever owned were the Evo lines, so this was a big leap for me, and I'm not sorry. However, there are a few issues with it.
First is a strange antenna issue. I have the Sprint version of the Optimus G, updated and rooted. When the network mode is set to LTE/CDMA, the 3G antenna will only turn on very rarely, leaving me entirely without internet access. I was about to return in when I realized that the issue is solved when I change it to CDMA only. We don't have LTE in my area, so I don't mind leaving my LTE antenna off. I'm not sure if it's an issue with my phone alone, or if it's a software issue that others have.
Then there's the screen. The screen itself is BEAUTIFUL, and I have no issues with it. But the screen scratches like crazy! I am extremely careful with my phones, and this one in particular. I kinda bought it on impulse, so I didn't have time to order a screen protector for it (one should be in tomorrow though). So I have been treating it with extra, almost paranoid caution. It's only ever been in my pocket while at work (nice khakis, so nothing harsh), and otherwise it's been undisturbed on a table. I check my pocket for any abrasive lint often since there's no screen protector on it. But the screen has developed about a dozen or so scratches, and one of them deep enough to distort the screen when it's on. I don't know how this is happening (the deep one happened in the space of five minutes, inbetween two texts, and was merely put into and removed from my pocket.)
Also, the battery life is kinda crappy. I live near a tower, so always have full signal. At work I'm on wifi, so that's not an issue. The battery scarcely lasts through work, with VERY light usage, and is nearly dead by the time I get home. Today, from the time I woke up with it at 100% to the time I got to work (about 2 hours, with constant near-full signal), the phone dropped from 100% to 76%.
Are these normal issues, or am I the only one experiencing them? I want to love this phone so much, but these seem like serious flaws to me.
I too had to change to CDMA so dont know what is wrong with that. And the scratches is weird ive dropped mine a few times and dropped my keys on the screen and nothing. And my battery is phenomenal. Seems like you have a dud.

In regards to the screen....this may sound like a stupid question and I don't mean to offend, but did you remove the temp screen protector that it comes with? I've not had one issue with my screen being scratched and I can't say I've been all that good to it for the last week.
I've had the phone for a full week now and I have not experienced 3G drops with LTE/CDMA mode enabled. Also haven't scratched it either (thankfully). I constantly put it in and out of my jean pocket throughout the day, so I don't really understand how yours got to be that way.
As far as battery life, I too don't see the issues you're having. Typically I pull it off the charger at around 7AM and can easily get 12 hrs+ with normal usage. Even with Android OS taking up the bulk of my battery (seems to be awake a lot). Lot's of people saying its a battery drain bug, etc. etc. etc...but if I'm getting 12 hrs easily, and 24 hrs with light usage, I don't have a problem with that.
-Screen brightness at 60%
-Wifi on all the time (connected at home and at work - probably helps, lol)
-2 Gmail accounts pushed constantly, Facebook messenger, and a few other apps that auto-update on schedule (news readers n stuff)
-My commutes to and from work - I listen/watch podcasts and/or read. Which means the screen is on the entire time (approx a 1hr commute). All said, my screen-on time sits at around 3 hrs for me.
I'll post some screenshots in a minute...

No scratches or weird battery issues here. My first two days the battery life was horrid. Afterwards I did some update and poof like magic.
Anyone have any info on the boot loader unlock initiative? I miss aosp
got this phone for sprint yesterday after having a BB for 5 years .. and i'm loving the beautiful screen,.
Only hiccups is maybe the battery... Yesteday i had it full on 100% then after 2 hours went down to 80%..
I'm currently in the office charging the phone to 100% will remove it and do normal routine on it and see how long it last.

Haha, I actually checked for this before posting. It is absolutely something I'd do.
After reading these and other comments about the phone, I realized I probably had a dud. I went to the Sprint store a couple days ago and swapped it out for a new one, and it's running beautifully, with none of these issues. So I guess I just got a faulty one. Thanks all for responding!

Good to hear! Sorry, I had to ask...my girlfriend had the same problem with her phone she got a couple months ago and it was because the temporary screen protector was still on the phone!
Anyone finding it gets kinda hot? I've read some owners complaining about this and it was mentioned in some review somewhere. Wondering how widespread it might be. Might be that people keep all 4 cores running 24/7. I don't see the point if you're web surfing, talking, texting. I keep it on Eco Mode most the time.
I've only notice it get warm once or twice, but even then it was barely noticeable. But I've had eco mode on since I got the phone, and it's not hesitated or stuttered once.

We are thinking of switching to Sprint, so we went to Best Buy and picked up one of these phones and I'm very impressed with it so far.
Actually this is the second one because the first one had a factory defect in the chrome around the screen. It get home with the 2nd one and notice there is a speck of dust under the glass.
I'm going to return this one in a day or two and see if the third one is a charm. If not, I'm not getting a forth one!
Any suggestions on a different phone for Sprint if this one doesn't work out? To me the only other phone to get would be the Note 2 and then the GS3.
A little help here guys. I was planning to return mine because of battery problem. Like i tried playing Dead Trigger, current battery is 54%, 30 brightness, sync and data is off. I played for good 5 minutes and it dropped to 48%. One more test is after it got 100% full charged, i unplugged it, Wifi is on still 30% and not using it for a couple of minutes it dropped to 97% and im not even using it!
So i want to return it.
The question is:
Do i have to pay for replacement? I got mine at BestBuy for 99$ almost a month ago.
2nd is will still they accept it now it got scratch on four sides. Any suggestion?

As long as it hasn't been over 30 days and the phone doesn't look "abused" then you should be fine, also if it's been under 30 days i would add geeksquad protection especially if you plan on rooting, i thought it was a bad investment at first, then when talking to a tech after my evo4g bricked he just said to "make sure the device doesn't power on" and they will replace it needless to say i took a ballpeen hammer too it and got a shiny new one 2 days later.
I took the LG back and got the GS3. I've already had to clear the cache on the galaxy because of excessive battery drain.
If the GS3 fails me, I'm gonna try the Note 2.

Yep, on eco mode the battery is outstanding. The phones is faster than my wifes S3 on eco mode, and I get nearly 2 days without charging. I had the note II for a week and that is just as good but was too big for me. This phone impresses me everyday.

[Q] Random power off issue

my epic 4g touch was on the cyanogenmod 10.1 wild for the night rom v. jan23v2. every time, if my phone were off a charger for 5-10 minutes the screen would flash to different brightness levels then turn off. it would do this every time since that rom. in order to fix the issue, i tried using sfhub's el29 root to go back to stock to try flashing the same updated rom. i was on el29 rooted and the issue still occured. i would have to plug it in for it to turn on again. is this a battery issue or is it something else? my battery is over a year old. any help would be appreciated. if you need more info, just ask

Amazon will have OEM batteries. Be careful though, some will label them like OEM but they are fake. You will probably be able to get a new one from Sprint or Samsung, though.

I've had good luck with cheap eBay ones for $3-$5. (~$10 for 2 + external charger, shipped from China)
Originally bought a cheap 1800mAh for my Epic, but kept it around and am using in my E4GT (when the orinal battery "puffed" and wouldn't hold much of a charge) Recently added a "2200mAh" one and external charger. It's a tiny bit thicker than my 1800, but still fits under the stock cover. I havent noticed the "2200" giving any better battery life than the "1800" - both work well and I've had no problems.
This issue is happening to me too but seems to occur when I'm downloading something like an MMS or app, or even an image intensive webpage. The screen flashes to different brightness levels and then the battery would suddenly "drain" to zero, where the software tells me it's at zero, but with a little extra charge and a reboot, the power level will be where it was before shutting down.
And none of this occurs while plugged in so I'm reasonably sure it's an old battery, I'd just like some confirmation. What gave it away though? The flashing screen thing had preceded a loss of signal so at first (and for about a week or so) I thought that was what it was until I found this thread.

Thanks.
When I went to get a new battery, the guy pulled the battery out and spun it on the counter. If it spins, it's expanded, and indicative of being on its last leg or already dead. Of course, you could also palpate the battery and you will feel the bulge but the spin test is simpler, definitive, and more entertaining. Just posting in case someone else runs into this problem or a similar battery problem and come across this thread - try the battery spin test.

[Q]

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 and for some reason, the battery is draining fast at times and I have no clue why. Could it be a software issue? Lockscreen Issue? Whenever I have my phone hooked up and charging, sometimes it profusely keeps charging then stops charging and vibrating thousands of times. I'm thinking about doing a factory reset, any app that can backup all of my data to an SD card?
The only apps I'm using are facebook, chomp sms, magiclocker(theme), music, simple notepad, juice defender, kik, and magicjack.
This started happeneing about 3 days ago and its frustrating me when my phones dead and I have to call someone.
Please help,
Thanks
Just turned it off and back on, battery was at 50% now its at 25%...

Its an SPH-D710, I havent modified the phone at all.
Thing is, everytime I hook up the charger to it, and it keeps charging on and off on and off on and off. It gets irritating and makes me want to throw this thing at the wall. Could it be the charging port?

Yes. This. I've asked mods to move it seeing as nobody else did.
You also mentioned that your battery is losing charge quickly, pull it out and try spinning it on a flat surface.
If it spins, then the battery may be going bad. There are a few options at this point, but I'd recommend ordering a new battery that has a larger capacity. There are several available on both Amazon and eBay.
I purchased a 3800 mAh battery with back plate for less than twenty bucks and my phone now lasts all day with heavy use. On top of that, I don't have to charge it as often, so there is less risk to my charging port.
Good luck!

[Q] Overheating and shutting off.

Hi
Just got this phone as an insurance replacement and really like it except that the phone gets really hot when using mobile data and then won't wake from sleep. I'm assuming its a heat issue. Using the B112 version of the software. Initially I though it was because it was rooted but even after a reset and un-rooted it's still happening. Think I've pinned it down to it happening when mobile data is switched on but there maybe another issue. Any ideas or advice gratefully recieved. Thanks

Tried it with and without a case still shuts off and wont turn on for about 10 minutes with screen on full. Any ideas or am I stuck with a dim screen?

Not an answer, but I use mine on full brightness with mobile data on whenever I'm outdoors and browsing, haven't had any issues. Running 116SP01 on O2 in the UK. You could try switching ROM versions and if it still does it flash back to 112 then return it as a faulty replacement?

Think I've pinned it down to screen brightness. Gamed for a good 2 hours last night on half brightness. The phone got hot but I was able to wake it from sleep as normal. Possible that the screen on full brightness generates too much heat when doing something intensive? May try the 117 rom this weekend. Thanks

My phone doesn't shutdown till it drops below 5%. As soon as I conect the charger I can turn it right back on. Something is wrong with your the phone or battery if it goes from 10% -0% then shuts down.

Battery issues
I also have experienced odd behavior with my Verizon note 4. My battery does the similar rapid percentage drop once it hits 20%. It will power off completely, I plug in my charger for literally 5 minutes (I had my daughter time this more than once), then power it on and it says my battery is above 50%. I always close down apps when I'm done with them, even checking my task manager often. Since the Verizon variant has yet to gain permanent root, I have nothing special installed that I feel would affect it. Just a few zynga games, Facebook, and instagram. I have no clue what's going on. But it's less discerning knowing I'm not the only one having this issue.
Question, do you all keep the fast charging option turned on when charging with regular chargers?

The battery percentage displayed is an estimate made based on a calculation of several voltmeter reading. I suspect the low battery warning actually consume energy and causes a spike voltage drop. The Battery may actually last longer if we were to turn off the low battery warning. You could just ignore the problem, raise the percentage level of the warning or just change or charge the battery before it happens.
So I started experiencing this a little while back.
Mine shutsdown @ ~5-13% and then proceeds to restart.
I finally bit the bullet and went into the verizon store yesterday. The guy helping me was nice, I told him I had already factory reset my device since this issue started and asked if it may be something a battery swap would help. He assured me that it most likely wasnt the battery and I should be getting my free replacement today in the mail!
Hope this helps someone file for warranty before their year is up!

So you're getting a replacement phone? Mine has a bit of scratches on the side, nothing to harsh, do you think they would void my warranty with that? Thank you.
P.S. could you also post if the problem was resolved by getting the new unit? Thank you.

I'm having the same issue but did not have this issue until the BOG5 update as most of you have stated. My phone has showed all the way down to 0% before the BOG5 update. I feel that the issue has something to do with the BOG5 firmware update. kartkid let us know if your replacement phone has also the same issue. Thanks.
I ordered the anker spare batteries and so far that has solved my problem. I'll keep updating if anything changes.

My note used to turn off without warning around 20%. At first I thought it's software issue after hotfix, then I started to think it was the battery, then I realised I've had this issue on my htc desire years ago... I've fixed it like that time -I've put a small pice of paper between the bottom of battery to make it press a better to the contacts and all issues are gone (I've drain the battery to 4% to test it)...
The battery is 100% to blame. I've had this happen to me and several friends who bought the Note 4 when it first came out. I bought a new stock battery and external charger and my phone lives all the way to 1%. When I use my original battery, it will die anywhere from 15-40% depending how hard its working.
