[Q] Going from touchwiz 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 Questions????? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hello,
I am sort of an noob the came from years of using an iphone. I've had my note 2 for a few months now. I am on 4.1.2. When i installed the 4.2.2 custom rom, I know Spen doesn't work nor AT&T visual voicemail which is fine. But one thing i couldn't live without was the SIRI-like function to talk to text. Is that an option on 4.2.2 because i could't find it anywhere? I just restored it back to 4.1.2. Does anyone how to get all those features back or whether that is even possible. I appreciate any legit info.

What app were you using on 4.1.2 to do talk to text?

Ok then you are going to have to stay on TW based roms to keep S-Voice. But know that you are the first person i have met to say that S-Voice is better than google now

Not true..
I am using svoice now on root box 4.2.2
The way I get it to work is I have it backed up in Titanium Backup
After I restore my apps, I restore S-voice by itself, restoring the APP ONLY..
Start it up, it asks you to accept/confirm, then works just like it does in Touch Wiz..
YMMV, but I have done that a dozen times recently, and it works every time...

I thought it authenticated through Samsungs servers but i guess im wrong. Good to know

yeah, maybe I am just lucky, but as long I use this backup of it, and don't restore data to it, it works fine on all of the AOSP roms that have been out since I got the phone a couple months ago..

[Q] accidentally uninstalled nfc..

I have the verizon galaxy nexus and i somehow accidentally uninstalled nfc.. Last month i tried installing one of the hacked google wallet ports for the nexus. I installed it through the clockwork recovery, and made sure to make a backup before doing this. That version of google wallet didnt work right, so i just deleted it with root explorer. When i found out that google wallet can now be installed from the market, i immediately downloaded it to try it out, but every time i tried to open it, it would get an error. So i went to my backup and attempted to copy the old nfc files back to the system folder (i/e: NfcGoogle.apk and com.android.nfc_extras.jar), but that failed to work.
So any ideas on how to fix this and get nfc working again?
Im kinda new to android as a whole, this phone is my first smartphone. Im hoping this is a simple fix and i dont have to to a factory restore or anything. My phone is rooted too if that helps, and I still have the google wallet files i intalled too.
The attachment is a screenshot of what my wireless and networks menu looks like.
Any help is appreciated
"Secure Element Not Responding" ?
If that's the case, sorry, you need a new phone.
You shouldn't have installed any hacked Google Wallet in CWM.
It said that when I had the nfc files from the hacked google wallet..but with the old files it just says "unfortunately, wallet has stopped" ..and I know that now, at the time I just found the easiest guide to follow for installing it though.

Sorry man, you borked NFC.
You might be able to use it again by flashing back to stock images, but you won't be able to use Google Wallet again, that's for sure.
If you can, try to get an exchange
Huh oh well , I guess ill just give up on using nfc..its not too important to me. Its just too bad I won't be able to use a feature of the phone.
@samsuck Maybe I will flash the stock images sometime this weekend and see if that fixes anything..hopefully it will bring back at least some nfc functionality. Oh and I'm pretty sure its too late for me to exchange phones 0.o

Flash New ROM / Install Apps in 10mins

I was reading through the threads over in the Samsung Galaxy S 3 forum today. I came across a very interesting thread about how to flash a new ROM and install all your apps in 10 mins. I will place a link to the thread below for everyone to have a read.
I was curious if anyone has tried this method? I would think this would be the perfect way to flash Nightlies if you use CM. Would save a lot of time. Almost seems too easy to be true.
Let me know your thoughts or experiences with this procedure. Thanks.

Yeah, I've done that in the past as well - I figured it was something along the lines of the Advanced Restore -> Restore Data. I'd only recommend it if you're flashing between two similarly based ROMs though.
It does work pretty well.

If you're going to restore your data right after flashing, why even wipe it in the first place? An even faster way is to just flash the rom with only wiping the caches.. To me it seems like it's the same thing.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Seems a little different. One's a dirty flash and you are just flashing a new ROM right over the old one. The other is doing a clean install of the newer ROM and then restoring data and settings. Like I said I haven't tried it myself. Read about it and was intrigued. Thanks for your response.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Restoring data is the same as not wiping... So why don't you just skip the wiping all together..
Theoretically you can just flash similar Roms without wiping but then you risk the chance of having bugs..
If you don't wipe then how can you ever be sure that it's the rom that is buggy or if it's caused by the data you restored..
I like my Roms the way I like my women..... Clean and smooth
I've always done a clean install and wipe beforehand. Probably will still follow the same procedure. Thanks.

I use titanium because I could pick and choose which apps to restore and choose which ones to restore data with. With apex, u can restore your desktop and with AOKP backup, you can restore all your settings. I say if I really tried, I can restore everything to my liking in about 15min. With all these tools, I no longer fear doing fresh installs

I'm the same way, I gotta flash the newest version to have the latest and greatest. It's been slow at work lately, I normally wait for the morning and start doing my install and setup at work LOL. With the wife and kids at home it's hard to find time sometimes in the evening to do all the setting up, troubleshooting/testing etc. I really enjoy it though, it has become a hobby for me at least. I want to learn more about Linux and Android though so I can do some of the developing myself.

Is this phone dead in the water?

Hey guys, I just got an S3 3 days ago, just got paid again and was wondering if I should go ahead and spring for the note 2 but everyone keeps telling me since the note 2 has exynos, it will be hard to develop for or something? I've had an iPhone for 5 years so I'm a clinical retard when it comes to android stuff. It almost seems like the people saying that are kind of jealous that they don't or can't get the note 2. I was just wondering if you can easily root the note 2 and flash CM10, because I hate bloatware and love CM10 sounds. If CM10 isn't available is it possible to de bloat it at all?
De bloating is no problem. CM10 will lose the S-pen functionality on this monster.

Thanks for the reply brother. Another quick question, I used a very easy toolkit to root my S3, I don't remember who made but it was in green text and in console. Is there anything like that available for the note 2, it was amazingly simple to use and easily un rooted my S3, I've been on Android for all of 4 days so excuse my nubishness. Lol
Right now it is a little more difficult to root than a 1 click method...but in time I bet the developers will make it happen..
MY honest opinion...get the Note II...

I rooted within 5 minutes of getting the phone, but I would imagine that this only applies if you're rooted. AT&T doesn't want you taking its bloat/spy/malware off, so I really doubt they'd let an unrooted user go through and delete the apps.
I'm waiting for the Multi-view update before rooting. Save myself from having to unroot. And as for bloatware, you can just "disable" it - without rooting.
And as for it being "dead in the water".... what you talking about? News to me...

As far as rooting goes... There is a method on here that literally takes about 3 mins from beginning to end.. very easy. Once rooted, just download and install Cleanrom Lite 1.0...this rom is debloated and extremely fast/smooth. There are plenty of sms apps that provide quick reply... gosms/chompsms/handcent are just a few. This is one awesome phone and I wouldn't worry too much about development, or lack thereof.

No need to root to de-bloat. I'm on the stock ROM, haven't seen a need to root yet.
1. Go to: "Settings | Application Manager" and swipe over to the "All" tab.
2. Find what you want gone (i.e. all of the AT&T apps) and tap it.
3. Clear data, Clear cache. Some apps might also require you to "uninstall updates".
4. Force stop.
5. Disable.
You're done. If you later want to re-enable something, scroll down to the bottom of the "All" list ... it has everything you've disabled listed there. I've disabled about 32 things that came preloaded, including almost all the Samsung cloud stuff, GMail, all the Google Sync services, all the Google additional services (apps like Google+ and Google Play Magazines/Movies & TV/Music, not Android system services), with no issues whatsoever.

Is there an SMS app with Quick Reply that preserves the look of the stock Jelly Bean SMS app? I really like the way it looks already loaded on the Note 2 so I don't want to take away its aesthetics.

yes go to setting-application manager slide to the right until u see all apps then scroll down to any app u want to debloat select then disable. Boom the app will disappear. Remember this method only disable the app if u want to delete them then need root. Learn about Odin stuff that easy for new noobs. Good luck

S4 Google Edition Flashable Rom

UPDATE
Android 4.2.2 v6
Working: All with amazing battery life
Not working: Google Wallet (force close)
Again, not my work, just helping the community!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2341794
Same setup - should work on T-MO.
Just an update about the new 4.3 GPe: External SD Card is readable when you plug it into your PC. The camera however still does not read the SD card. All else is still functioning.Version 4.3 will break root! All versions of SU currently do not work with 4.3. Just keep that in mind.
You can flash this over your current 4.2.2 Google Edition. If you're coming from TW, do a complete wipe, then flash. Thanks
____________________________________________________________________
No - I did not grab the system dump myself
Yes - I have tested this for the TMO variant and it's fully functioning
I did create a Youtube Video on how to install the Google Edition S4. Check it out!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmYpkJ27WAM
Althought it's not a ROM built from scratch or a project of any kind, it is a rom all in itself straight from the S4 GE
(Updated Link) - Thanks to luckyduck69 for posting a new mirror. Previous Link crashed XD.
If you're interested in the GE (VERSION 4.2.2), download here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/5nz662i2y826kwd/google-edition-bg.zip
As always, make a backup, wipe, then flash.

So far, seems fine! I miss the "long press back to kill app" feature, but I can live without it as I play with this ROM.
Thanks for the link! After flashing this ROM will all software/firmware on the phone be identical to that on the GPe handset? Or are there any other bits that aren't contained in the ROM?
I'm wondering that too. This is stable? Wipe system/data/cache and flash?
I did a wipe flashed and then had to reboot to get WiFi
going, other than that so far so good .feels smooth, but it could be a placebo effect not sure

I'm not sure wi-fi calling is known to work even on the real GPe, is it? I thought it might be specific to TMo/TW ROM somehow. I guess only GPe reviewers know at this point.
I was referring more to general wi-fi capability, I saw some guys saying that didn't work with the GPe system dump on TMo handset.

Back up/Restore

What is everyone using to back up and restore apps and app data? Ive used Titanium in the past but always had some type of issue when restoring data so I stopped restoring altogether and I have been reinstalling all my apps through the Playstore. I also have Rom Tool Box installed but have not tried it to restore yet.
Is there an app out there that works great restoring apps and data and if so which one. Thanks

Have you used it more than once? Also did you restore data without any problems?

Titanium, one of the 1st apps I bought when I got my evo 4G/1st smartphone. I use the scheduled backup function everyday at 4.

Ever since I bought N3, TiB never worked for me, at least scheduled backup didn't. It takes less then 10 seconds for it finish backing up apps with new data, and when I sort by new backups, I see most apps where not backed up at all.
I've sent several emails to developers, but it's like sending it to a black hole, no responses.
It's a shame really, as TiB used to be the best.
Hellium is a good alternative too, especially if you are planning not doing root for a while, but it fails to backup/restore a lot too.

Thanks

Thanks guys gonna try MBUP tonight and see how it does. I never had any luck restoring data.
Has anyone restored their app and data from 4.3 to KK yet? If so was it ok or did you have to do anything different?
Reason I ask is because going from 4.1.2 to 4.3 I and many or all others I should say had an issue woth TIBU and the TIBU restore app was created.

The playstore doesn't list "My Apps" anymore, how do you restore the apps now if you don't remember them?

Did you back them up with anything? Also why isnt the playstore showing your apps thats strange unless yoir not signed in to your Google account. It has to be that. Check in playstore if your signed in. When your there slide your finger from left of screen to right and you'll see the menu. On top it should have your email sign in.

I did not know that's where they hid that!
It used to be on the menu button.
