[Q] Autorun Desktop? (skipping modern ui) - Windows RT General

Hi everyone!
I have already tried to find the answer to my question on the forum but failed. I want my Asus VivoTab RT run Desktop automatically after reboot of the system. As I understand Autorun folder doesn't work and there is no point to put anything there. Also I looked through the forum and spotted that apps can be autorun via some registry key. So is there any clue to make Desktop start automatically after reboot of the system? This method for 8 doesn't work on RT. Thanks!

There's a better way to use the Winlogon\Shell registry value, using what I believe is the "Show Desktop" task GUID for Explorer as a shortcut. I can't find the link at this moment, though. There's also a method that uses a Scheduled Task instead.
Why does it even matter? I mean, who reboots a tablet? It'll sit for a week in sleep mode even off the charger, and the first thing you want to do at boot-up is probably run something anyhow... alternatively, Win+D or just tap the Desktop tile (I put it in the corner so I can reach it quickly with my thumb, but almost never actually use it).

WM5/6 Preventing App uninstall

Hi,
I have been told that there is a registry setting to prevent applications being unloaded from a WM5/6 device.
Can anyone tell me what it is?
I want to install a personal fw but don't want the users to unload this when my back is turned and opening up our network...
Many thanks,
Sam.
You can remove a program from the 'uninstall' list via registry (sorry don't remember the key) but this won't stop someone from simply deleting the files.
As for stopping an up from running - there is no such key. If the program has no active or visible windows it will not show in the regular task manager, but if a user knows enough he can easily delete if from autostart or turn it off using a 3rd party app manager.
But there is one thing I don't quite understand about your question:
You want to put a firewall on the phones of people in your company / organization so that when they connect to your network they won't jeopardize it?
Don't you need a firewall on the network side for this?
Note that WM devices (unlike XP etc) have virtually no server components so unless your users install a harmful app there is nothing for the intruder to connect to. (No file sharing, no remote desktop etc.)

The best way to remote desktop??

First off Hi all and Im no longer a XDA virgin, or I wont be in a few days anyway
I borrowed my mates old mobile phone that has mobile 2003 SE to see if I could control my desktop pc with it, thats running vista 64bit, so I can turn on my desktop pc, run winamp and play all my tunes from my bed. I must of tried 2 or 3 bits of software with no luck each time. then I noticed the "Terminal Services Client" that win mobile had. That sort of worked and I did remotly ran winamp, but it wouldnt play for some reason?? But the software kept hanging and crashing so I couldnt really do much anyway. Ive looked for another version of "Terminal Services Client" for windows mobile but theres none.
Tonight Ive just bought my first mobile/pocket pc "SPV M2000 / HTC Blueangel" for £60. Its been upgraded to windows mobile 6.1, so my question is will I have better luck with remote desktop on windows mobile 6.1 and does 6.1 has "Terminal Services Client"? If not what is the best software for remote desktop for win remote 6.1?
vncviewer
can't answer your question about 6.1, but a good simple solution might be the decent little vncviewer program for windows mobile on sourceforge. works good on my htc wizard 100 (a.k.a. cingular 8125) running winmo 5.0. I use UltraVNC server on the PC - good encryption and the works. not sure whether the remote assistance or terminal services is as secure.
For me tihs is the best:

there's two big different strings of remote desktop programs, one logs you in and you have your pc's desktop on your device's display and you have the full pc experience, but, it logs you off on your pc, like pc to pc remote connection. the other one is to control your pc and still have the pc running for itself, just as an external control or HID device.
if you want the first, the full experience, i would recommend wm6 rdp, just google it, it is freemail and works like a normal remote desktop, meaning you need to configure your router and your pc to do that. it's freeware by the way. in general i would not use iton a blueangel, because 240*320 is just too little to have an overview of the pc's desktop, which, in my case has a resolution of 1680*1050. i do use that program on my universal though, and it works just fine.
the other thing is to use the HID, the bestestest program for that is ppc tablet, unfortunately it is not free, but it's great, you stay logged on to your pc and can control winamp and any other program, use your touchscreen as a touchpad, like a notebook's mouse, you have a lot of possibilities. here are some links you might want to have a look at, too.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=496296
will add more, when i found them, but you can also search for remote desktop in the forum and you find a lot of results, that might help you get it to work.
EDIT: here is the link i was looking for:

this is the official great round-up of the best remote desktop programs out there, you can look up, what you need, what and if you are willing to pay for that and the functuionality it offers
Thanks guys.. I will have a play about when I get the phone hopefully tomorrow. Basically what I need the phone todo, is turn on my desktop from standby, run shortcuts I have in my start menu of my playlists, control winamp and put my desktop pc back onto standby. Then I dont have to get out of my pit at all,. What would be nice aswel, if the phone could remember my password so I dont have to log on to windows each time.
oooh, i just saw... "turn on my desktop from standby", that could become difficult, since neither the real remote desktop services, nor the addon services can run in standby and realize your approach of access, for example: some services like ppc tablet (which would be great for your winamp uses) need a server program running on your pc and a client software running on the ppc, but technically the server wouldn't run in standby, and as i mentioned before rdp services do neither, the pc needs to be turned on and connected to your network to be accessable. plus there is no such thing as "power on wlan", so that wouldn't work either. putting the computer into standby isn't that much of a problem, with ppc tablet you can simply navigate the mouse cursor to do so, in rdp services there is no direct function for standby, because in the version you get on your screen, the start menu's shut down,... commands are changed, but you can make a shortcut on the desktop to do so. i don't know about the command now, but google certainly will.
I did try the wakeup on lan, when I tried it with my mates phone, and it did wake me pc up but the "Terminal Services Client" on his phone kept crashing for some reason, and winamp loaded but couldnt get it to play for some reason.

Logmein

Hi, I've used 'logmein' from my Touch HD in the past, to connect remotely to my PC, and all worked well. But now, although I can log in, as soon as I try to connect to the relevant PC, it 'seems' to try and connect, but then does nothing. This is whilst using Opera - but, when I use IE, it works OK - once I'd installed a cab to enable remote access.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what I might need to do to enable access via Opera?
Thanks.
I use it too. Presumably the cab for IE is some kind of plug in which doesn't work in Opera.
Just stick with IE. What's the problem anyway? Make logmein the home page in IE and all the work is done for you. If you run it full screen it doesn't matter which browser it runs in.
I've made it a favourite in IE - so it's not a major issue, I just find Opera a little more intuitive.
I was just wondering what might have caused it to suddenly stop working in Opera, when previously it worked?
LogMeIn has never worked in Opera for me... only PocketIE.
Tip: If you log in using your PC, go to 'Edit Computer' or something, then you can drag a desktop shortcut that links directly to your remote PC. Copy that shortcut to \Windows\StartMenu\ and you have a link that you can stick in the HTC Quick Launch. Takes you straight to your PC Credentials login screen...
The only problem is the shortcut icon appears as an IE page, not Logmein icon, if anyone knows how I can customise that it'd be much appreciated!
problem
Hi, I wanted to ask if you have similar problem as i do. I use ie and like above, after putting login and pass ie goes to blank page and nothing happens. do you have any idea what that may be? i use dutty ROM if its helpfull...
thanks

Same here mate. I was using the stock ROM and it was fine, but as soon as I upgraded to WM6.5, it stopped working. I guess it's the new version of IE that's incompatible. Maybe there's a way to downgrade IE to the previous version? I've only just thought of that, so I'm gonna see if you can do it now
Okay. For the guys who are having problems using Logmein with Opera, I'm sorry, but I've got no idea what that problem is.
For people like myself who have upgrade to WM6.5 and found the new version of IE does not work with Logmein, the only answer I've found is to downgrade IE to 6.1, which you can do from following this link...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1890124&postcount=2
Personally, I didn't really care for the newer version of IE (whatever version it was), so am more than happy to downgrade to get Logmein back again!
Yay!
Logmein Application
of course it would be nice if there was a free standing application to remote connect to a PC via logmein.com. Similar the the iPhone app they do....
thanks you guys! i downgraded ie and it finally worked.
of course stand alone version would be perfect, like youtube - it looks and works much better this way on our powerful handset (i tried youtube on skyfire - you know, what i mean..).
I'l watch this thread if something interesting happens
see you later, hermi
This works great to get me to my remote comp.
(downloaded the old IE)
But the keyboard does not work. ant ideas?.
well I loaded the keyboard cab for the TP and now I can input text, except I can not get Capitol letters to work.
Hi all,
After messing (a lot) with keyboards, cabs, RACrtlCEs (or something) and after reading lots and lots of posts, I finally concluded that:
1 - Logmein won't work on Opera (don't know if it's RACtrlCE.cab issue or other). But as my stock HD has PIE built-in, no prob there.
2 - Using PIE, the remote machines won't reply to default QWERTY's keyboard. But as my stock HD has the possibility to change to default WM keyboard, no prob there also.
(By using Logmein this way, most of you should have logged-in with no problems and without installing or changing anything in the HD)
Now... I'm stuck with:
I can see all my remote machines and access them, but the ones with special characters in the passwords, I won't get past the login screen (e.g. @).
Does anyone have any idea I might haven't tried?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Bizao.

control WP7 phone/SMS from PC

hey guys, i'm having trouble with finding a program like mobiledit or jeyo that allows you to SMS and have phone priveleges on a pc. my netbook has windows 7 starter and i can't find anything that works with windows 7 starter or with wp7 or with both. anyone know something i could use? this is a necessity with me. if i can't find something, i'll be migrating away from wp7 and my samsung focus. even samsung's own pc studio software does not support the focus.
all my controls would be via bluetooth.
there isn't a program at present to do this as the phone is locked down quite a bit and APIs would need to be written to get this going (or phone needs to be hacked up for it, which i don't see happening any time soon).

that seems so odd to me. windows 7 starters automatically answers incoming calls and allows me controls of my phone's zune playback (forward/backwards, stop/pause) while connected to the phone via bluetooth, so you would think since windows has already got the functionality of partially controlling the phone, they would go ahead and add the texting and the "answer/ignore/dial" functionality as well.
there are some serious functionality problems with the wp7 in these regards. you go look at mobiledit's list of working phones and it is just about every phone made except the windows phone 7. any ideas on if this could happen in the next year?
i would suggest hitting up social.microsoft.com about this. that is more of a direct source. MS could provide more ideas as to what they're doing at the MWC next week, but i doubt it would be detailed enough down to particular featuresets.

Switch from WM6.5 to WM10, a big step and a lot of questions

Hi all,
I've been using a HTC HD2 running WM 6.5 since 2009. I'm still happy with it but it becomes more and more obsolete for many things (no 4G, unable to browse "modern" website, no HTML email support etc.). Now i think about purchasing a Lumia 950 for WM 10. However, there're many functions that seems lost or deeply changed since 2009. I need a new phone for professionnal use. I don't need social networks, games or entertainment things (what Android do very well by the way).
1/ I use Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 and i need to sync all my calendar and contacts with no cloud at all for privacy reasons. I have no exchange server. I'd like to do this through Bluetooth as i do it everyday with WM6.5. This seems impossible nowadays! Even between Outlook desktop and Outlook mobile. This is a hudge regression to me. I'm still stuck with my old WM 6.5 mainly because of this. I've heard of a software called Akruto but it works with a USB cable (another regression). Plus, and i can't find any feedback about this software. Is it really cloudless or not... we don't know.
2/ I need to sync many files by keeping the original tree with folders, subfolders etc, with no cloud again, between my desktop and my mobile. And i need this data being crypted in AES in case I'd lose my phone or some people try to access it. For now with my HD2, i use FreeOTFE which crypts and mounts a drive with a letter (i.e : G: ) on the desktop from a file stored in the microSD card inside the phone. After that, i can sync the files with a special software on Windows 7. This software needs a letter to be mounted for working. But again, it seems the MTP protocol has become the standard, and it's not possible to get a letter with it... Another regression.
3/ I need visual notifications when there's a miss call, a voicemail or a new mail without sound pop-up and without having to turn on the smartphone screen . The LED was very useful but i disappeared too. It was replaced by the glance thing which looks interesting. Does it work with the Lumia 950? I've read the glance doesn't exist (or doesn't work well) with AMOLED screen. By the way, can you choose what kind of notification exactly you need? To avoid draining battery for not useful things.
4/ I've been using Tomtom for GPS for 10 years now. And i'm sad to discover it doesn't exist on WM. What good alternative would you recommand? With of course point of interest customing and lansdcape mode switching automatically. Or, would you think the method to make working Androids apps on WM10 would work with a GPS software?
5/ Does Google maps exist on WM10? I don't want any alternative, but the original one for many special reasons.
Thank you very much.

First of all , this is a huge jump you have made!
but you should just jump in a figure it all for yourself, because there isnt any mobile OS out there that can meet your requirements unless you configure it specifically.

Yes i know i need to configure it to avoid the all-cloud forced step. That's why I'm here.
1. there doesn't seem to be any way to sync your calendar and contacts through bluetooth, and i don't think it's possible with usb either, unless using some kind of 3rd party software.
2. windows 10 has build in encryption, i haven't used it yet, so i don't know what kind of encryption it uses. but i think if you copy your files over they will get encrypted. another way might be using interop unlock, which, if i'm right about this, enables you to mount the phone as usb storage and mount it as a folder in windows, but again, i haven't tried this either, so i don't know how this works.
3. as far as i know glance does work on the 950(xl), but you can only choose 5 apps to display their unread count, in addition to showing the time and date.
4/5. there's no google maps, most google apps aren't available for windows phone/10. there is the default maps app, which uses bing maps. this app has basic navigation possibilities.

Thank you. The Interop unlock the USB mass storage seems good news.
Hi,
ad3) I don't own a 950 but glance should work with the 950 (I can't posts links but if you google it or look it up on windowscentral you can find instructions how to set up glance on a 950 (XL) )
ad4/5) Build in maps are OK and also allow offline navigation.
