ZL Camera vs iPhone 5 - Sony Xperia ZL

Here are some shots taken with the ZL and a iPhone 5.
The ZL in every shot looks washed out vs the iPhone 5.
The ZL was in 9MP Super Auto Mode
The iPhone has no camera settings.
I've had the phone for a few days and it's a nice phone, but the camera is sub pair for something your would expect from Sony.
The rest of the device is pretty solid and I would have kept it as my main phone if the camera had been better.
The ZL is the first shot and the iPhone 5 the second.

they both suck as shown but your piano is certainly a nice piece of classical inst.

please use burst mode for the ZL, since we know auto mode is bugged.

Yeah take the ZL out of auto mode and it's good, auto mode on any camera is pretty garbage imo

We don't need custom ROMs, all we need is someone to fix the damn camera already! It got potential with good sensor and optics but somehow Sony managed to gimp it on software

I recommend to take the fotos on NORMAL mode a put the ISO on 100 or lower as you can.

Not certain at all... Night shots on Normal mode and ISO 100 whit a exposition of 0.7 can be better than Night scene and Superior auto photos.

no, i don't , i'm saying that you can get better photos on normal mode with lower ISOs than the photos you can get with the superior auto modo or night modes (ISOs 1600 -5000). I like clearness photos, i prefer it over a soft photos.

People comparing camera shots is like comparing paintings by two different artists. No one takes pictures the same way, especially someone who isn't a professional photographer. There's just too many factors that can contribute to the resulting image. Even if you set everything manually to the way it should be, you can still fudge it up with poor lighting, bad angles, etc.

why you guys not contented with the shots of a 13mp ZL.. iphone camera is supplied by sony.. and always campare. dont buy it if ull just talk about the flaws..so whats the fuss??... if you guys want a true beauty of pictures then buy high end DSLR`s!.. or put ur DSLR`s to ur mobiles... hahaha..

Those pictures taken with the ZL look horrible there must be something wrong there, any way I heard that the latest update to the ZL brings improved image quality hope what ever the issue is that there's a fix to it.

Problem is every time you close and open the camera app it goes back to superior auto.. Ain't nobody got time fo that to change it to normal every time

The lens on ZL looks dirty. (fingerprints or something)

Yes I agree someone needs to post up some new photos here cause I seriously doubt that the phone really takes photos that poor.

A friend of mine just bought the ZL and we put it to the test a couple of days ago, against my iphone 5. We both agreed that the ZL took far better pictures than my phone.

The .253 updates really makes the camera better, although it still can't reach camera focused phone like my old Nokia N8. Though the ZL is a lot faster shooter, makes it a better point-and-shoot camera, too bad it don't have large sensors and xenon flash

Thanks cause the pictures in this post was holding me back from getting a ZL
I love this phone but I also love my Xperia T except for its battery life which makes me want to upgrade to the ZL but not if it's going to be a down grade one thing I would sure to miss is the loud speaker on the T the ZL doesn't quite have the same tone

I've taken some test pics with my ZL and iPhone 5 and the ZL is nowhere near. A real disappointment. I'm not looking for better, at least just the same would be good. The phone being my primary shooter these days it has to take good pics.

Nexus 7 tablet Photography

Taking pictures with the Nexus 7 front facing camera isn't easy if you want to point the camera away from you.
Nonetheless I thought I'd try and see what it would do.
The hardest part was trying to figure out if your finger was correctly placed on the Camera app button.
Even if you have everything else where you want it, finding the tiger position, without any feedback, can be frustrating.
The Camera app is for both still photography and video, though, here I only tried the former.
You'd undoubtedly need some kind of tablet support to do video and that probably would help for still photograph too.
You can make photo adjustments after you take the picture, but they're pretty limited, more like the Instagram variety.
Deleting the bad ones is easy.
I emailed the four you see here to myself and processed them in Adobe Photoshop CS6, mostly adjusting the mid-tones and shadows and highlights. Then I cropped them and uploaded them so they weren't so big.
Here are the results:
http://www.pbase.com/beaucamera/image/145355842
http://www.pbase.com/beaucamera/image/145355843

Yes, you can do photography with the Nexus 7, but there's a lot of trial and error and the app's aren't very sophisticated.
With phone and tablet technology coming together, there's definitely a ray of hope for the future.
Really really nice.

why?
why take pictures with a tablet? With all respects, these pictures look terrible. The camera is good for skype and such. Sometimes it is better to let it be...
I think its cool you took them just to show what the potential is and what is and isn't possible with the 7.
There are some applications where using the N7 for a tripod cam and writing or using a custom camera app just for time lapse to match the photographers parameters makes sense due to the cheap price point and processing power.

Tell me you're joking, these are quite frankly awful - noisy, low-res monstrosities.
As previously mentioned, leave it be. There's a reason the N7 doesn't come with a camera app. Moreover taking photos with a tablet is an undignified task, not to mention back-to-front.
Do yourself a favor, use your smartphones 5-8MP camera.

Geezus, look at all the pro photography artists come out of the woodwork (pun intended). You're slamming the OP as if he is planning to enter the photos into an exhibition and is going to go across the country touring with his N7 photography suite.
All he was doing was messing around and showing what can be done. The pictures are not nearly as bad as you drama queens are making them out to be. LOL Monstrosities? Seriously? Take a pill man...

I slammed the OP? Did I say monstrosity? I just told him not to waste his time and use his smartphones camera, there really isn't any point in wasting time trying to make N7 FFC pics remotely decent.
The people saying that the pictures are terrible are total idiots. Photography is not about getting the sharpest or highest resolution picture. I have a very good DSLR camera but I still like taking pictures with the N7. Why? Because it forces you to think outside the box, which helps you become a better photographer.
And like previously stated, it's not like OP is going to enter these in a contest or something. He's merely showing what the camera can do.
People argue about the stupidest things...
The Nexus 7 has a camera. It works. Is it great, no, but who cares.
If I am somewhere and only have my tablet with me and need to snap a shot of something (picture is worth a thousand words).... I not going to run back to my desk to get by Phone/Camera if it will work good enough to get what I need. Its just a picture.
I rarely take pictures that I plan on posting because they are really good images, it is normally because it shows something, serial number, cable setup, location of devices etc...
BTW... I did some playing around with the camera as well to see what I could do with it.
Not sure how this is different experimenting with other functions of the device to see what the limits are and you can get it to do (GPS anyone?).
Maybe we should start a Nexus 7 Photo Contest...
Do yourself a favor and get DSLR controller, and shoot with a real DSLR camera. 5-8MP out of a tiny pin prick lens isn't that much better than the Nexus 7 camera, truly.

I do photography for a living and artist will sometimes take the low end junky stuff and turn it into art like vintage art. so kudos to you sir who started this thread alot better then what i could do.

Premium suite freatures already on my GS3?

So the rollout for the premium suite has started in the UK at the end of december, i didnt get it yet but i did realise that some of the features of it have been on my phone since the JB update, those features are "smart rotation" and "low light camera". I'm not sure but i thought low light camera has been on my phone for quite some time.
There were a couple of Premium Suite features that made their way to the GS3 with the 4.1.1 update. Not any big ones though.
Alright, can't wait for the full premium suit!! hopefully it wont have to go through carrier check

Lol Blunt.
I installed the newer Motorola camera from my Droid Mini onto the M. Everything seems to work for the most part, except the screen gets jumpy and glitchy when scrolling the settings wheel. It takes photos much faster. It was taking several seconds to take a photo with the original camera, so the newer Moto camera is a huge improvement in that regard. I don't know if the image quality is any better or worse, looked kind of bad to me, but I thought the photos looked kind of bad with the original camera ever since KK anyway. Might just be because indoors and not enough light though.

The Razr M's camera/sensor is terrible. My pictures come out foggy, grainy, and ever since KitKat...pinkish. Using Moto's new camera or Google's camera, my pictures don't come out with the pinkish hue, but there still terrible. My Galaxy Nexus takes better photos, and that camera sucks... bad.
Not as good as my iPhone 4S or Droid Mini. I just took a few indoor pics and they look out-of-focus and grainy. I don't know if they would look better with the stock camera since the new Moto camera replaces the stock camera app so I can't try both easily. Stock camera was just too damn slow to be useful. Moment is gone before it takes the pic. I feel like once upon a Jellybean, the phone used to take decent pics, and stock camera wasn't nearly as slow. I have a few pics that came out pretty decent that I was sure were taken on the M long ago, on JB. Granted, they were all outdoor pics.
I think even on KK, the pics it takes might be better than the Kyocera Hydro Elite I had (surprisingly bad for 8MP) and way better pics than the LG Lucid 2 which had the worst 5MP camera considering its speed/performance level was close to the RAZR M. Usually you only see cameras as bad as the Lucid 2's on cheap plastic single-core prepaid phones that come in blister packs.
thank u all very much i pressed it
Well after bith of your opinions and the revuews i read i think i will be looking else were for a phone fot work i need a cheap phone with a decent camera oh well thinking aout a used s3 or a used 4s thanks again guys if i could just strech for a used droid dna hope to see you all in anither forum
Hmmm, well, I guess the pics are not TOO awful.
Took a couple pics of my car with the newer Moto camera (don't make fun, it's an antique, lol). One in the morning, one in the afternoon. I think old camera probably took better pics, but was unbearably slow and the newer one takes pics instantly. I had HDR and spot focus turned off.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the ZTE Axon 7 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

And maybe we'll have some improvement from the community, should the bootloader be unlocked, again, as they said .

how do photos look using a 3rd party camera app like open camera or fv-5? that might help to determine whether it's the software or hardware.

Same issue. It's really random though.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Sony Xperia XZ Premium come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).

This phone is only good at well lighted condition but in low light it's horrendous even the video is very grainy. But i admire it with its capability in shooting moving objects no blur.

Bar Beach; Newcastle, NSW Australia. The XZP takes a darned nice photo.
the frustrating thing is, the hardware is capable of so much more, its really just the post processing that lets it down, a finer degree of control would be more useful or even allow RAW so we can do the editing later.
low light shots are a different matter, that's probably an optical limitation more then anything else. a CMOS / CCD is only ever as good as the optics the light passes through.
I'm very disappointed with the low detail of the camera.

The new analyst dxomark david work for cupertino, is a apple fanboy and troll.
Dxomark was in this summer working in palo alto (,usa) cupertino base and designing new web, new protocols etc.

Oh wow the 3rd an 4th ones look great. I dont see how people can complain about the camera on any mobile device honestly. I came from an Xperia Z2 which had a phenomenal camera I was really impressed with it. The fact I could flash cyberian camera mod just made it even better. That gave me the ISO sensitivity equivalent to our XZP. The mod allowd for the Z3 to support 25600 ISO which I believe is higher than out XZP.
Just check out some of the photos I took on my Z2 here on my G+ page: https://plus.google.com/116272109758114321506
Completely satisfied with just that and I know the XZP will snap photos better. Lets just face it though, the XZP and ever other phone are just phones so youll never get anything like a DSLR but maybe something close. I think alot of people need to appreciate what phones are capeable of now. Especially those at dxomark. They also need to realise that they are just phones once only able to call.

Furthermore proof that dxomark was paid by Apple and Samsung, giving it an 83 and then you look at this? I would think that was taken on an expensive DSLR!

Amazing mate, the colors the blur the contrast, thumbs up!
Oreo update helps immensely in low light, my xzp seems to be using 2000iso now instead of cranking it to 3200 or 6400. More grain but less smearing. Burst looks to do a good job as well, although you cant use it in low light for shutter speed reasons.
Pictures arent perfect or anywhere near note 8 level, but they are more than useable now in low light.

As an ex owner of Nokia 1020 I am quite happy with the new SONY IMX400 sensor performance as I am with my older IMX300 sensor in Xperia Z5. The later still does superb pics in daytime with 23MP manual mode.
