[REQUEST] An X or Y forum for threads like 'Galaxy SIII or Nexus 4' - About xda-developers.com

Hello,
There are a lot of threads scattered around different forums for phone comparisons and polls, an example being one with a title like 'Nexus S or Samsung Galaxy Ace'. I think it would be nice if we had somewhere dedicated to these types of threads, because an XDAer will notice that there are a lot! It's just a little suggestion - what does everyone think?
Thank you for reading this,
OrangeFlash81

Here is one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846277
Also it would be wise to use tags to position your sigpic. Check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1761276.

[DEV] Honeycomb Progress

Hello developers,
A thread has been created to help to make the honeycomb functional.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1025263
Please share your knowledge and let's make this sweet.
**The thread goes for both the GSM and CDMA versions
This is why I think it was a silly idea to split GSM and CDMA forums, they could have clearly been separated by peoples eyes and tags. Now we have to mess about going back and forth instead of having everything in one topic/forum

Indeed, Or just scrap the splitting of GSM and CDMA altogether.
A dedicated HoneyComb forum would be a good idea though.
Now we have 4 hc threads going its bound to get confusing

I'd prefer a dedicated honeycomb forum.
I find the forums much better now.... as a euro gsm tab owner I no longer have to sift through all the non-relevant info for gsm tab topics and I'm sure cdma users have similar views.
So we have *another* honeycomb thread that just links us to another Honeycomb thread? Jesus. This GSM/CDMA split was a bad decision.

I don't think it was a bad choice, I just think people are to lazy to open up more than 1 tab at a time in their browser. I don't have any problems keeping track of various threads in various forums... that's what the subscribe button is for! I do think that this and it's attached thread are a very bad idea, considering we have a GSM and a CDMA post already in place to track the development. There (shortly) wont be a need to cross-check between CDMA and GSM platforms, because they will become their own entities... they just are not at the moment. (At least not in the Honeycomb realm)
Everyone in the HD2 forums thought separating them as they are now was going to be bad... but jesus, with 7 OS's on one device, that'd be ridiculous...

the purpose tf link to the other thread is to attract the GSM Devs to the HC thread, it is not a GSM or CDMA division here, many GSM devs don't check that CDMA often so this link-thread is for gather everyone in one place.
we had 2 or 3 HC threads but none was purely for general development, so this one is for that.

No, this one is to point people to that one and that one is just a copy of information available on the other two... It's redundant.
Trust me, GSM devs are checking all the forums... If not, than they are cruddy devs.

We have Specemooses update thread, the CDMA and GSM rom threads. This thread and the thread this links to are unnecessary IMHO.

[REQ] Separate threads for GSM vs. VZW!

Seriously.... many accessories incompatible between the two, e.g. batteries... can we get separate threads or at least some posting guidelines to identify GSM or VZW?
Yes please!
I second this motion!
Please at least tag posts with [VZW] or [GSM]
Yes please! At least for Accessories!
Problem is most retailers don't even tell you if its make for one or the other. It kinda makes me mad. We just need to be more specific with the titles of threads IMHO.

I think this is very much needed!
I have had a couple other phones that have 2 variants(GSM & CDMA) and the only sub forum I have ever seen them split is the dev section. I don't think they will split the accessories section. We just have to do a better job at tagging the threads as mentioned before.
I agree. I don't like too much separation. I like to easily see whats being done for the other side. The Dev section is hard enough.

Recommendation for a new thread

Instead of having a general and development section being flooded by questions regarding problems would it be possible to have a separate thread entitled "rescue squad", or something to that effect? There are a lot of people who have problems when installing roms, flashing, rooting or any other one of the many things we do to our phones that could possibly cause unwanted side effects. I make this recommendation as it seems a lot of development threads and others get flooded with questions that have been answered repeatedly and having a separate thread off the main menus for all phones would drastically decrease repetitive questions be asked over and over and answered over and over. Thanks ks for taking the time to read this and look forward to any comments.
Thanks,
An xda user who loves the wealth of knowledge within.

As I would see this as a good option in a support forum. It is not what what we are about here. We want people to learn on their own by doing the research and not just posting questions. There is a Q&A section for that.

Nice idea, but it wouldn't make a difference.
All the necessary info is already out there.
No one reads.
No one searches.
There is one thing that will help fix the above problems real quick - infractions.

I have to disagree!
I search and read before I post a question.
You just don't know about it because I usually only hit the thanks button when I find the answer to my question.
And I tend to think that I'm definitely not the only one here doing so

I hate to be the first one to say this, but I think this thread is worthless. It's obviously not doing much good and how could it possibly reduce clutter? It's going to be a jumbled thread of favorites that is near impossible to make sense of. Not to mention that it's completely dead...

I agree. Locking all other threads and just making a new one doesn't reduce clutter, it just makes it worse. How about if the moderator(s) just reopen the other threads because they were fluid and in great discussion. Then delete this thread.
This thread is pointless IMHO. It's dead and ended up jumbled.

Or just be grateful a thread of this is even in place, where it can all be closed down....as realistically "What is your favorite.....so on....so on" is off topic type & worthless discussions anyway, to which there is an Off Topic forum well in-place....

Is it? As far as I see, there isn't a specific d2att Off Topic thread, and as is said quite often, not all phones are created equal even of the same model. So why should we use a "broad spectrum" Off Topic thread for things that we want to know will work well on our specific device?
Please forgive if I'm out of line, but that is my opinion and I think a lot of people will agree with me.

There shouldn't be any off topic for any devices. As I see it, XDA is a development site, not a social network or a place to chat or vent. There is already an off topic section, found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=261 which I think is more than enough for this site. The off topics only further clutter threads and important information and off topics, IMHO, are pointless.
That's just me though. If it were up to me I'd close them all and just stick to development and Q&As... Maybe that way members would at least read OPs and rules Lol....
But that's just me

Honestly, the only threads in this section should concern the AT&T SAMSUNG GALAXY S3. There are general Android sections on XDA.

Should the Pixel and Pixel XL forms combine?

I also posted this to the Pixel Forum here.
Right now on XDA we have separate forums for the Pixel and Pixel XL. For the first time (that I can think of) we have two identical Android phones in two sizes. I don't know how popular iPhones forums are on XDA but they don't have separate forums for the regular and plus versions. There isn't iPhone forums on XDA.
It seems like both Pixel and Pixel XL forms already have topics covering both devices. What are your thoughts on combining forums?
Added a poll.
I can't even find the Pixel Phone forum on here. Do you mind linking the main forum so I can find it. Thanks.

It is just pixel. It seems fairly dead over there for the phone just being announced. Maybe most of them are in the XL forum.

Combine
While much of the content will be the same, I can see a reason for the separate forums. Accessories will be different sizes. ROMs will have to have some sight differences as well. While accessories and ROMs should be labeled for the appropriate version, some people won't pay attention and cause themselves pain which they will then in turn blame everyone else for.

All you have to do is use search bar and type Google Pixel there are too. We should not have them combined different motherboards different roms and roots when released. not the same devices
That's a tough choice. I would say merge them but keep the development subforums separate.
Maybe, you should wait for an "iFixit" (or equivalent) evaluation of what is realy inside...
btw; do you have any idea of kernel version : 3.18 or 4.x (new concept without new kernel = pixel (?!)).
These two phones are identical in everything except screen size. The forums should be merged.
Forums should be merged.
Should be easy to use a prefix in the thread title so everyone knows.

well, not exactly.
one has FHD screen, other has QHD (obviously different size as well)
different battery capacity.
It looks like more than 80% of the votes are interested in consolidating the forums. It looks like the concerns would be separating Accessories and Development. Some expressed this could be resolved with separate areas for each device or requiring tags.
@MikeChannon you are the Moderator for the Pixel and Pixel XL forums. Could you weigh in on this? Is this possible to do?

I'll bring this up with the forum moderators for this forum and see what they think. My personal view is, the Pixel XL and Pixel phones should get a lot of traffic, based on the previous phones, I think 2 forums are warranted. We could get confusion when people are asking questions in the Q&A section for example regarding which phone they ware wanting support for etc. Also we would need to find out if the ROM's have different basis as well, if they did then it would almost certainly need two forums.
Agree with @Stephen ...but there are a few caveats that we need to look at first and unfortunately that can't be done until some development begins. First, are there any nuances in the architecture that differentiate the X from the XL? On the front face, only the display and battery are different, but as we all know that doesn't mean the rest is identical. Maybe there is something buried deep in the kernel or a line in one of the props that may seem miniscule, but throws everything out of wack.
Something that we can possibly look at in the future would be combination, but with some restructure. What I mean here is that we can have the Guides/News, Accessories, Themes/Apps/Mods and QA sections combined, but separate the X and XL Development sections from one another. That will make sure that if you are just asking a general question or need a guide, you can look in the combined section. But if you are looking for a specific ROM build, you will have to go into your specific arena.
Ultimately, we need to get devices in hand and a better analysis of the system dumps that we currently have. Those will tell the tale.
Oh and someone said something about the Search Bar. That made my day. I think that I have to log off now since my keyboard is soaked with my tears of laughter and I don't want to short it out and have to explain why to IT.
