It seems that my power button has died on my Galaxy Nexus, which is a huge pain in the strategical locations. While I know how to turn the phone off should it shut down, I have no idea how to handle anything else. I have my friends CALL ME to be able to unlock the phone and use it.
There are some apps on Android Market that specifically state that they fix power buttons, but none of them work with the latest versions of Android according to the reviews (if there's any I've missed, let me know).
I know that the phone can be turned off using a charger, since plugging it in or out makes the screen turn on. But are there other ways to turn on the screen, since it's a phone and I'm mobile most of the time?
Is there another way to remap the keys on Android? Note that I cannot root my phone, so options like that are not good either.
Is there a way to remotely turn on Android phone with a tablet through some app? Since I'm carrying my Nexus 7 with me and it uses my phones internet connection to stay online. I tried to find an app that does this, but could not find any.
Any help is much appreciated! I do not wish to buy Nexus 4 at the moment because it isn't much of an improvement and sending it back to UK for warranty seems like a huge mess that I would rather avoid for now.

First, try pgm (slide 2 wake).
Secondly, why can't you root the device? Once you have your screen on, you can turn on USB debugging, and use to it reboot to recovery or fastboot.
Third, there's some experience from users that fixed their own device's power button.

I had a similar problem with my Samsung Captivate a long time ago. I used WidgetLocker and enabled volume wake function. It uses volume buttons to wake the screen. I'm not sure if this feature is still available, but it's worth a try. If it is not, you can ask for a refund. There are also several apps/widgets to put the phone to sleep. I used this combo for a few months before I got a new phone. Hope this helps :fingers-crossed:

I've managed to fix my power button recently, its a hardware problem. Do this only if you dont have warranty and are comfortable with opening up your Nexus.
Go to iFixit website and follow instructions to dissassemble the Nexus, its quite easy, a few screws and flat cable disconnects. Next, you need to remove your power button flex cable from the motherboard, do this by lifting the cable connector on the motherboard up and pulling it gently out.
Next thing is a bit tricky and you need to have pretty good sight and precision.
On the flex cable the button consists of 2 pieces, the flex cable and the button itself, which is like a black sticker sticked on the flex cable.
I've removed the sticker and the button that is glued to it with a scalpel (careful!!) and I've found actually rust and dirt on contacts (dunno how rust got there, i have expected dirt only), and then with my scalpel I've carefully scratched the dirt and rust of both parts of the button and its contacts on the flex cable. After that I've put the black sticker back on the flex as it was before (if it wont glue tape it with a small piece of tape) and return everything where it was and assemble Nexus back togeather. And voila! It works!
Keep in mind that I didn't have warranty so it was either open up and try to repair or toss a $200 device. Also, I'm not responsible for any damage that you do to your phone, this is just a brief description of my power button fix. Hope there will be more successful repairs :fingers-crossed:

I believe i've read about remapping the hardware buttons; if you're interested, search google. I personally prefer and use smart screen on. I just wave over the proximity sensor and the screen turns on.

After I split in half the button I found oxidized contacts with green and black scurf. Cleaned it with little amount of ethyl - works perfectly!

I just did this repair and I have large clumbsy fingers. thank you! I just had to remove corrosion between the button contacts and around. i dabbed nail polish remover (i'm not sure if that is a bad idea or not, but it got my phone working!) and did a little bit of scraping. on my sch-i515 there was a some clear plastic folded over the back sticker part that i had to get up, then i was able to get the black part up without having to fully remove it.

Long story short:
I was applying SGP's flex to my phone yesterday. Too much water maybe, my phone started acting weird after installation, really dimmed display, touch screen not registering touch, and etc.
So I opened up the phone per ifixit's instruction, attempting to see if there's really any water in there so I can dry the components up.
At the time of opening it up, didn't notice any water at all, while the screen still remains not responding. At the end, the phone finally failed to boot (white Google screen looping). So I put everything back on, and finally leave it looping on my desk while I went out trying to have some fun in order to blow away this Saturday night sadness.
Magically, when I returned home after ~5 hrs, the phone is in the system and the touch screen works perfectly again. Also, the screen is showing images normally again. I happily went to bed with my phone.
This [sad] morning, volume button won't work. Opened it up, found that the volume switch (which was soldered onto the mobo) was ripped off (probably by careless me). Refer to this pic here. EDIT: sorry I still can't post outside link.

Now I'm left alone: the phone is a imported GSM, seemingly not supported by anyone in the U.S. right now. Moreover, since the volume switch is soldered onto the mobo, and I am very sure I will ruin the phone if I try to re-solder the switch onto the mobo (it's some finest soldering on there), not to mention that the Cable Ribbon of the volume switch seems to be ruined as well, I think my only option is to get a totally new mobo that has volume switch soldered onto it.
To summarize:
1.Do I need a new mobo, if I find no one to help me repair the phone?
2.Where can I get a new mobo? (searched on eBay w/o results)
3.Will changing the mobo affect anything? I assume the data and system would be lost, but how about the identity of my phone?
4.If there's one agent in the U.S. that you think would take care of this uncostly (~$100?), who would you refer? Maybe Verizon, Samsung, or someone else?
5.If all of the above attempts fail at the end, I'll be considering selling it at a deep discount to someone who's got his way of restoring this phone, where would you recommend for me to go find such a talented Nexus lover? Will eBay fulfill this purpose the best?
Finally, thanks for you, the fellow members, for your help in advance. I hate myself for opening up the phone, now, thinking that the phone may have recovered for good w/o being opened up by me. Now that it has recovered with a broken volume switch in its body, making this issue much more complicated

it sounds like you jumped the gun and opened the phone prematurely. How long did you wait to open up the phone after you installed the screen guard?
As far as your situation, I would probably cut my losses, get what I can out of it on eBay and buy another one.

Should have I also shouldve stayed with a dry apply film. Being a perfectionist, I almost knew I would ruin the phone by over spraying the application solution for a easier and better application

Actually, immediately. I didn't know the gaps around the glass screen is also the entrance for the water to get into the phone. I thought only headset speaker could let some water into it. After disassembled the phone, I realized that the water can easily get into the phone thru the gap, which leads the water right onto the mobo underneath the glass... Again, I didn't notice any water inside the phone, but i could be just moisture that's playing some nasty game here. I also did some intensive swing and tossing of the phone to get water out, until there's no water coming out.
Anyhow, I just went to Verizon store, and they said they wouldn't touch anything GSM, and said the only option for me seems to contact Samsung. Or as you said, I could sell it on eBay. Don't know how much it's worth though
I had to open up my Gnex last week because i dropped it in a puddle of water while getting out of my car...
If i remember correctly, the vol rocker is glued to the internal part that comes out with the screen and most of the electronics, so i cant imagine how you would have torn it off...
Its connectected to the main pcb via a connector though, sure you didn't just unplug the connector??
You could also try to go without the volume rocker, use some kind of widget for volume control, not ideal but cheaper than a new Gnex

Yes, the volume switch is double-side taped, but the other end (the cable ribbon itself) is soldered onto the back of the mobo in my phone. I don't know how or what force ripped it off of the mobo. The cable ribbon is torn pretty harshly... I'll upload a pic when I make past the 10 posts and "unlock all capabilities"..
Also, did you notice any "sequela" after the incident? Does your phone function good now? There's time that on my phone the touch screen does not respond/register touch anymore suddenly. I usually just leave it standby with screen off. Usually, after 1+ hr, when I turn the screen back on, the touchscreen works fine...

Install the app called quickboot, it lets u go direcrly into recovery or bootloader without holding volume keys.

I live in Brazil, a friend of mine brought one bought at Negri electronics at US for me. It suffered an accident (part of it involves someone pushing down a window over it) and the screen cracked.
I've sent it back to Negri for RMA Repair to fix the screen and they did it, but before shipping back, found that the volume buttons weren't working. They canceled the shipment and found out that the volume cable was broken (the screen crack was near to the volume buttons, so I guess it wasn't them that broke it while fixing the screen).
Well, I've actually paid for the screen repair and ship back, but they claim that their repair facility was unable to fix the volume... any light over this?

Sorry I can't help buddy, at the time I owned the device, it was still pretty new, so I couldn't find a source that actually sells GNex motherboard. I think the only way to fix a ripped rocker button is to replace mobo if you don't find anywhere to solder it for you.
Important part is this, for whoever got the chance, buy it from Amazon! The rep was kind enough to issue me an RMA after knowing my ripped volume rocker is my own fault, and while I was actually trying to ask him about where to send it to fix. They just gave me an RMA and let me send it back and get anything else I want. Amazon customer service another miracle!

Hey guys, I cracked the screen on my HOX so I replaced the screen with a unit from directfix.com
After double checking all of the flex cables I tried to power the phone on and I am getting nothing from the screen and the vibration motor is constantly buzzing.
The only signs of life is the red LED, the three capacative buttons will light up, and the aforementioned constant vibrating. If i hold the power button to attempt to turn it off the buttons blink several times then it seems to stay on after that.
Has anyone heard of a problem like this before? Its killing me not having my HOX! I had to put my sim card in my old iphone 3gs and I have to say that this sucks really bad.
Are you sure you've connected everything correctly? It sounds like there's something being shorted! I'd recommend you to dissassembly again, an assembly again BUT THIS TIME VERY CAREFUL. Best is if you use a video tutorial if you think you're not experienced enough.

Thank you for the advice. I disassembled the phone and carefully put it back together. I took care to make sure the flex cables for the LCD, vibrator/button strip, antenna, volume buttons and digitizer were all carefully connected.
Now the vibrate function seems to work fine as it just gives me a short pulse when I turn the phone on as it usually does. The screen however, still refuses to turn on. I made extra sure that its flex cable was put in the right way and that it was secured with the jaw bone connector.

I tried exactly that and the LCD would still not turn on. I am just hesitant to return it because I know that the chances of the screen being a complete dud are very slim.

Update: So I was thinking the phone was booting up all the way, but I just saw that my computer won't recognize the phone beyond making a connection sound; I just can't see it in windows. As i said the capacitive lights stay on, but if I fold the power button they blink 15 times exactly and the phone seems to power off. Should I assume the SoC is dead or gamble with a replacement LCD?

Hi, I'm in the exact same situation you have described above! Did you ever manage to work it out, what was the solution? Any info or help at all would be great, thanks!!
I did replace my lcd+digitizer as well as yous. And I had same problem. But it does work now.
1.open up your phone . Take all parts off, separated.
2. Take battery off.
3.Now connect power button.
4. Connect battery.
5.Switch it on (hold pwbt for 2sec), mobo+battery+power button itself.
6.Now wait 20 sec.
7.Now connect LCD ribbon(bottom one),make sure it's right in, push it in far as you can.
8.Now put it righ on bezel and connect digitizer ribbon.
9.Press pwbt and see does it work. If does put rest of stuff together and be happy.
I can make phototutorial on request.
I did it few times. The battery was touching the LCD ribbon and it comes of very little but screen comes off and I have to start all over again.
So make sure that ribbon it's not getting any pressure from battery.

I have been looking around, but no place specifically answers this exact question.
Long story short I have a t-mobile Mainboard that I want to save from a phone with a broken screen that I have. From what I understand the other components work as well (camera, speaker and whatever else). I understand that I can purchase an LCD/digitizer with assembly and carefully place the components into there to make sure the phone works but it would cost me around $120 for the parts + whatever time it takes me to replace the components. My second option which I am asking to see if it is indeed possible, would be to take the mainboard from the T-999 and replace it with a SCH-I535/SPH-L710 that I would purchase (most likely with bad ESN - costing me the same amount) but it would mean that I would not have to deal with screen replacement and I have a higher likelihood of having a good quality screen. (I have never been happy with the quality of screen replacements from ebay). It makes no difference if it doesn't work, but someone with the experience of working with different models should be able to answer this question.

I am trying but T999 with bad IMEI's are not only more expensive but a lot of them also have broken screens so im back where I started. I am just stating these two because I can find them cheaply and easy to find as well.
In that case, you could try taking the Display & Digitizer from those phones and put it in your phone. Don't try to transplant your motherboard into that phone unless you have a good reason to do so.
It functions but you have to use a case and...
I did this a about a week ago. Here's how it went.
I bought a SPH-L710 without realizing it did not have a sim card slot. The screen had one slight crack and everything else worked.
After receiving it, I bought a T999 with a cracked screen/ non-working digitizer and everything else worked (the seller heard sounds when it powered on.)
I disassembled both and put the T999 mainboard on the L710 screen digitizer. Most of the screws line up. The two screws that don't line up are:
1. at the bottom near the TOP of the USB port. The hole in the board and the hole in the digitizer are on opposite sides of the USB port. This cannot be remedied, where the screw goes through the board, there's no hole on the digitizer, and you can't put a hole through the mainboard to meet up with the one on the digitizer. You could try but I think there's a circuit on the board there, or not enough room.
The two holes on the SIDES of the USB port will line up only when you squeeze thee mainboard and digitizer together while installing the screws.
2. on the side near the power button, there is a screw that goes there, but on the T999 mainboard near where the screw goes, there's something that looks like a button cell battery about 3mm wide and 1.5-2mm tall. It stuck in a hole made for it in the T999 digitizer, but the L710 digitizer does not have a recess in it to fit this button cell so the T999 mainboard sticks up slightly, enough that if you put the screw in the hole in the side, then the power switch on the mainboard will not stick down far enough, and when you push the power button on the outside of the case, it won't engage the power switch on the mainboard. To remedy this, leave out the screw on the side of the mainboard.
Because the mainboard is slightly bent due to the button cell battery, you need to have a case that compresses the phone together so the power button will engage the power switch properly. I used a "waterproof" chinese knockoff case I got on e$ay for $13. It's not waterproof, but the phone didn't get ruined even thought I tested the waterproof-ness of the case before I put the phone in and it passed, so maybe a genuine otterbox case would have been better. But the case does OK to compress everything enough that the power button and power switch work all the time. With the case on, you can't tell the phone is missing screws internally.
Verdict: everything works properly except the camera doesn't focus properly, it only works in Macro focus, I don't know if I should take the camera module from the L710 and try it or if it won't move because of the stress of the mainboard being slightly bent all time due to the button cell battery. It did focus properly for the few few days I had it.
One other issue: I can't get Windows 7 to recognize it, so I can't use Odin to root it, I've tried all the drivers, I've tried all the modes. I have no idea if this is a Windows issue or if it is somehow caused by the Frankenstein's Monster-ness of the hardware.
So yes, it can be done, with a "rugged" style case and with a few issues. I have no experience with the I535 at all.

I was looking for this info about 3 weeks ago and didn't really look that hard since i was pretty sure everyone would give me the same replies you got before I replied. But for my entire life I've been asking questions no one else has asked, so I'm used to just having to do stuff to get answers. In this case, it helped you too.
If I had to do it over again, I think I'd try the whole process w/o the L710 parts. Maybe the I535 will work, and I still could drill a recess into the L710 digitizer if I had a mill, but I don't have access to mine now and won't for a while, and I'm not sure I trust the drill press to not crack the digitizer.
Also - NFC is less reliable than it was with my S2, meaning it doesn't work all the time - it's harder to beam contact info to another phone, but QI wireless charging works flawlessly.
My hope is to put some NFC tags in the truck along with a wireless charger so I can listen to internet radio as I drive, i.e. - a tag to turn off wifi, turn on bluetooth, turn on the app that streams music to my JVC car stereo and turn on the "TuneIn" app. and then I can still charge my phone without worrying about wires.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Yesterday, power button has stopped to work. Nothing was happened when I pushed it.
I tried to open the device (my mistake ) and I tried to see if there was a problem. By opening device, I have accidentally ripped the power button component. So, now it's not connected to the nappe.
Logically, it's impossible to start device now without that connection between power button and nappe.
My problem is that the internal storage of my device contains a lot of photos that I would like to save.
Do you know if there is a way to get these photos ?

i had that problem with another phone....which had a work around
but you may not like it.
1. you may be able mess with the pins in micro usb to get it to "trick" itsleslf on (idk if itll work for this phone, dont really wanna risk frying the phone too)
2. buy a new ribbon online. i took mine apart to paint it . and luckily this phone has a ribbon that slides and locks onto the board instead of soldered on
3.idk what bootloader you have but yours may have an option to take the battery out. *button press comb.* then you can get into download mode(which wont help) but could bring you into the bootloader....unlocked of course.
otherwise....
~*option 2*~ is the best course to take...and they are cheap

When I put mine back together. The sticky back to the buttons wouldn't hold to put it back together.
I used a razor....clean it up and scrapped the sticky back to some Velcro I had.
I would hope they send it with the ?double sided tape? Needed to hold it on.
Hey all, so I just replaced the screen (followed the great guide on this site) and now I'm getting some odd behavior when trying to boot.
The power button is completely unresponsive. When I plug the phone into power, the LG screen comes up for ~3 seconds, as normal. The LED is flashing thru all the colors per the usual as well. Then the screen goes black for another 3 seconds, all the while the LED flashing. Then LG pops up again just for a moment, then to the normal phone-is-off-but-charging screen, with the LED flashing red.
Really don't know what to make of this. I had it rooted with a one-click root from here. The only changes were deleting stock apps and enabling the front touch keys (but never had an issue with it booting after this, I did that at least a week ago). Also my PC recognizes that something is plugged in, so I guess that's good.
Thoughts?
Update: tried booting into recovery mode, I held the buttons for much longer than normal to no response. As soon as I let go, I get the LG screen. Then black. Then LG. Then an unusually long AT&T screen, then it booted. Now the power button works as it should, and it boots in that same odd fashion. And it seems that I can not go into recovery. Yikes.
I'd be fine with that except I have a dead zone across the lower portion of the screen, it's about a half inch tall and about covers the asdfgh... row of the keyboard. Weirdly if I start pressing on any other key and then swipe to any area in the "dead" zone it WILL register, as in, I can select the S key, normally in the dead zone, but swiping to it from a working area. Will try soaking the mobo in alcohol and swabbing the digitzer connector with a q-tip. Any other thoughts?
Update 2: I tried cleaning the contacts of the digitzer connection- both the end of the cable and the motherboard connection- with rubbing alcohol. Reassembled, and we're back to square one. Power button unresponsive, when plugged in I'll get the LG screen, then black, then the LG screen will flash and I'll get the chargining screen. But now, trying to boot into recovery mode does nothing. So then I soaked the mobo in alcohol, and cleaned ALL the contacts and ribbon cables on the frame. Reassembled, no change. I really hope someone sees this, as I'm at he end of my tech know-how. Tonight I'll try to reconnect my old touchscreen and see what happens. Maybe the new one is just defective? But you'd think the phone would still turn on...
God I hope somebody sees this. I feel like a complete nut talking to myself.

Okay sounds like a hardware issue with the power button being unresponsive. I would take the device apart look around all connections of the power button and look for any hair line cracks or dirty, sticky, grimmy connections. Try cleaning upall that stuff, while there I would look at the digitizer and clean that up. When done flash a new rom with the LG flash tool, allow boot and reboot normally several times before testing. I hope this helps I am new to the phone and have yet to get my repair kit for it so I will not know much more about it till I get into it myself. Hair line cracks can be easily fixed as long as its on the sadder areas. Just re sadder it

Now for the weird flashing on and off booting mine does this as well but all functions regardless are working flawlessly. My phone will need serious structural repairs but nothing I can't do just had a horrible owner. Definitely worth the trouble this thing runs so smooth better than any other I have used and it will continue to hold for a couple years cause of the power behind it. I wouldn't worry about the booting flashing like that I'm just thinking it does this to show it has been tampered with.

Hey man thanks for your reply. Reminded me to update this for anyone else who finds it.
So the new screen was definitely defective. The one time I managed to get it on there was a dead spot. I sent it back, a replacement is on its way.
Now the good news- I realized why my phone wouldn't boot. Turns out that when removing the motherboard, the top part of it got a little... bent. Nothing bad, nothing permanent, but when I mounted back onto the housing, the top part of it had a tendency to stick up a little bit. Well if you follow the small ribbon cable off the power button, it leads to two gold contacts. Sure enough on on the bottom side of the motherboard there are two nodes that would press against the contacts.
Basically, the power button wasn't even connected to the board.
So I actually put the whole thing together, screws and all, and with that, the motherboard sits snugly as it should and the button works fine.
Right now my phone is some sort of hacked up zombie, with a cracked up screen, an upper-left corner that's completely decimated/missing, and no adhesive to hold it together. Hopefully the screen makes it here soon!
Oh and I agree totally, this is the smoothest and most reliable Android I've owned, better than the Evo 3D (which I quite liked) and a GS3 (meh, it got very unreliable after a year). I'm happy the screen replacement is cheap and easy so I can keep this thing for at least another year.
Cool glad it worked out for you or hopefully will. Can you do me a solid once your screen comes in and if it replaced well all working that is could you post the site you got it on or pm me with it. I am here tons of issues with defective screens. Would like to have a reliable market to shop from.

I have never had a bad part for any kind of phone from Wholesale Gadget Parts in Bixby, OK (Tulsa area). I found them on Amazon and originally ordered because they were close and I was in a hurry. I kept ordering because they get it right. I have about a 50/50 success rate with phone parts off other sellers on Amazon. If you buy cheap, expect a high failure rate.
Glass and digitizer for G Pro is about $18 before shipping and any applicable tax.
