[Q]Unable to boot into recovery - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
i'm using HTC Desire
Bravo DVT1 ENG S-OFF
HBOOT 0.93.2001 (PB992xxxx)
MICROP-031d
And my phone is rooted, but i am unable to run recovery, i tried flashig via fastboot then with Rom Manager but it still doesn't work. When i try to boot into recovery i stuck at HTC sreen (tried from ADB, Terminal, HBOOT, Rom Manager. Tried with different recoveries for ex. CWM,RA,TWRP,..

Try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751258

tried all the instructions, but the problem persists .... zip file will be installed through the bootloader but nothing changed and the desire to restart the htc logo when i was trying to boot into recovery

Just a theoretical question, is it possible to root device, s-off and flash hboot without unlocking bootloader via HTC DEV?

Yes. With revolutionary, or alpharev, hboot >1.02.0001
// Edit. DVT1? Hboot 0.93.2001? Interesting
This is one of them special desires out there.

Yeah i noticed that i got this phone rooted with s-off, but recovery is still not working, even the stock recovery wasn't working

Well, you could try flashing a recovery through fastboot. Maybe it will work. If it won't, then flash the 2.3 ruu and restart the rooting process.

ok, i tried to flash RUU, and i have a question, why was my bootloader bypassed? is it normal?
After RUU i tried to flash EXT4 recovery, but when i tried boot into recovery i just get white screen with HTC logo, still same issue
and i am still facing problem with revolutionary etc., waiting for device

you have quite a rare DVT1 device. it would indicate cdma device, but have seen case where it can be gsm as in this thread. is yours a cdma or gsm device (gsm has sim card)?
in that thread the only recovery that would work is RMD recovery, try flashing that through fastboot. i've never used it myself before.
also i've only skim read the first page, also make sure you uninstall rom manager, you don't need it, it's not good for desire.

Big, no HUGE THX mate. finally! my recovery is alive the only working recovery on my device is RMD recovery and my desire is GSM fyi

glad to see you got it working
for whatever reason, RMD recovery is the only compatible one for your rare device (DVT1 and GSM). don't bother switching recoveries as long as RMD can backup, wipe and install roms.
if you're about to install a custom rom which requires sd card partition (most do), we'd normally recommend partitioning sd card with 4ext recovery, but since that doesn't work i'd recommend Gparted.
oh and again, make sure never to use rom manager with desire.

Well everything worked fine, till i faced new issue i haven't found working rom yet, everytime i flash rom i get only HTC splash screen. And i still haven't found fix for it. I am thinking about trying rom for CDMA phone despite the fact that my phone is GSM, but i am not sure what can happen i hope it won't brick my desire

My Wildfire S doesn't start any recovery - why?

Hello,
i am very desperate.
I want a permanent root on my WFs so I unlocked it.
The next step was to Install a custom recovery. I tried different one but non of them ist starting
I tried this one:
CWM 5.0.2.6
CWM 5.0.2.8
Touch CWM 5.0.2.8
I used fastboot to install them. The flashing works good. But after reboot an selecting "recovery" nothing happens.
None of the is starting. Either I got a black screen or my WFs hang up or it is booting normaly.
What can I do?
I have a WFs with Android 2.3.5, Software# is 2.26.401.3

maybe a bad download, try redownloading recovery.img or try a totally new link.
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?1rdxmtpx26201or
this is for cwm 5.0.2.8.
did you get any errors at all when flashing recovery?
(not trying to be rude)
for example, did you leave it to fully install.....it has to 'send' the .img to the phone first, then install it....
in cmd did it say send OK and then flash OK or soemthing similar?
i'm thinking that if you get black screen, maybe it sent it but didn't install....either that, or as i said, maybe a bad download?

I tried 3 different recoverys so it is unlikely that three different files are damaged.
the cmd says as you mentioned, no errors, everything seems so bee good.
it's not the same error when flashing one of the custom recoverys. with one I got a black screen, with another one the WFs start's with a HTC-screen and hang up, and with the third one after a some time of waiting, the device is starting normally

sorry, but I am a beginner in android.
how does this work?
simply copy the xxx.img-File to the root of the sd-card?
and then?
Is flashing a other recovery (custom recovery) possible with the original software?
The only thing I I have done is to unlock HBOOT.
The WFs is still S-ON.

My problem is the same. Same configuration for me, but no recovery boot is possible, I can see only HTC logo nothing more. You can try to make zip file with recovery image and name it |PG76IMG.zip|, place it into SD card root and boot into bootloader. But it did not work for me at all. But U can try.

You can re-install the original recovery.img file.
I just wounder if the newer H-boot are doing some sort of signature check of the img file and that's why they fail.

I don't understand why only I have this problem. I think many people with the same device have the same software and noboday else says something.
It's a lot of effort because I have to install 2 times everything because at the moment there is no opportunity to make a full backup
I found some postings which says that downgrading software for WFs would be not possible. The only thing would be to cheat the number of the version but then it's still the same software on the device.
Are there other things that I can do?

it isn't just you with this problem there are a few of us who flash clockwork mod and can't boot into recovery no idea why either and there is no answer for it. my next attempt is to s-off the phone. I've tried everything you have done as well. just thought I would let you know your not alone mate.

Desire boot loops and I can't get into recovery

I've been happily running CM7 for the past year and yesterday while I was browsing the phone suddenly turned off and starts bootlooping, I then tried to get into recovery to flash one of my backups but I couldn't get into recovery anymore. I can get into the bootloader (vol down, back and power key) but if I select recovery from the menu it starts bootlooping again. I was hoping someone knows what's going on.
I used revolutionary to root the phone, had clockworkmod recovery installed (don't think it was the latest version, haven't updated it since I've installed it a year ago) and was running CM7.2 (latests stable version).
I also apologise in advance because you guys must be sick of people asking what to do with a 'bricked' phone but I'm still hoping someone can help me.
You have the explanation how it all works in my signature.
Just flash recovery.img via fastboot.

Not sure what link you said is dead, they all work. I meant on this one "Before Crying for Bricked Device - How Nexus One and HTC Work ".
All you need is recovery.img download it from here:
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager/
and flash it via fastboot.
Both your ROM and recovery are bootlooping. But importantly your bootloader is fine and therefore you can easily recover. First get your recovery in order by flashing recovery from fastboot. Thereafter when you are able to get into recovery flash your ROM in the normal manner or restore your nandroid.
Thank you both! I flashed the recovery.img and could get into the recovery mode again! it's restoring my last back up as we speak, so hopefully it's working again.
If it all work go here:
www.4ext.net
and get rid of that buggy cwm recovery.
Well.. today it started bootlooping again in the same way as described in the first post and now the method I used yesterday to fix it doesn't work anymore. If I flash a new recovery.img now and subsequently try to go into the recovery mode it starts bootlooping again... so now I'm wondering if I should just flash the RUU via pc to at least get my phone working again... do you guys think that would work?
edit: can I even run the RUU in fastboot usb?
RUU is the solution if all else fails. But only use 2.3 Android RUU. And remember to downgrade hboot first.
Before you get into that I would try :-
- Flash a different recovery and try to get into recovery. But this time dont restore your nandroid. Flash a ROM afresh.
- Remove your sdcard and try to get into recovery. Wild guess !
- Also try formatting your system, sdext etc partitions as given in Bortaks thread.
I tried flashing a different recovery (amon ra) but that also didn't work, when I tried to get into recovery mode it got stuck on the HTC boot screen (with some weird extra lines through the image).
I will try to remove the sd card.
Another weird observation, the phone doesn't seem to be charging anymore, at least... the led doesn't turn on when it's plugged in.. it get's weirder and weirder.
like handy says full wipe, wipe/factory reset, wipe dalvik and format all partitions except sdcard then do a clean install of a different rom. restoring the nandroid, u could just be restoring the problem.
edit: just read ur post bout charging, looks like HW not rom or recovery problems
Sent from my HTC Desire
yeah but the weird thing is that this started this morning, I charged it last night (when all of this stuff was already happening).
Run 2.3 ruu as fast as you can, you're on a good way to hboot or radio brick.

[ROOT] HTC Desire stuck on Bootscreen after evo³

Hi,
I need some help solving my root problem with my European HTC Desire. I recently got the device itself from a friend. Since both noobs with Android and rooting/flashing, neither him nor me know if it is a branded phone or not. I assume, it's not branded since I couldn't see any brand on the device or in the menu so far. Also, it's still Froyo (Android 2.2) and looks pretty standard.
Same hard facts:

My aim is to get a CUSTOM ROM (preferably mild wild's cm7 JG) on the device. For rooting, I would like to use the unrevoked³ tool, since I didn't find a step-by-step instruction for revolutionary (besides, I don't like to give away my serial number...not trying being paranoid, but, you know..)
For the unrevoked method, I followed the Noob Proof Video Tutorial. I am stuck at "Waiting for reboot..." (in this video @ 2:02 min).
My guess, without knowing for certain what the problem was, is that my HTC Desire doesn't reboot correctly even without connecting it with USB-port, etc. It may be kinda broken (I had tons of bootloops, freezes, etc, pp). Maybe I somehow damaged the phone with the first try to root it? I tried anything I read here during the last 3 days (clear storage, soft reset, bootloader reboot, etc).
I need to get the battery out and then wait for good 10 Minutes, to even boot normally. Often, I just come to enter my PIN for the SIM card, when there's a reboot. Often it reboots even right after the second boot screen ("quietly brilliant").
MAybe it's a heated processor? idk, but even really long pauses wouldn't make it reboot correctly.
I disconnected the USB cable and took the battery out, then after 10 minutes, I put them back in and obviously evo³ continued the process from there ("system to settle...might take a minute" or sth similar). However, my device just rebooted there again and then I had the error code "Communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted. Try again."
This is logical, since it reboots when it wants but never when it's supposed to ****ty phoen ^^ (excuse my language)
Any ideas?
If your phone can boot normally, without any reboots, use revolutionary to s-off and install a custom recovery.

Best would be to flash the 2.3 RUU (sig, put in on sd-card and boot in bootloader), and use revolutionary. You will lose all your data, but at least the phone will boot, and you will root it.
Well, except if unrevoked did install a custom recovery. Check that too.

No, unrevoked didn't make a custom recovery...the boot menu looks all the same.
However, things are really messed up now. I put the 2.3 RUU image on my SD-Card and booted it via bootloader. An update process began. After completion, the phone rebootet several times just up to the HTC-logo, vibrated about 20 times (maybe the 7-times stuff a couple of times in a row).
Nothing works now. I couldn't even boot anything now.
Also, my bootloader shows HBOOT 1.02.001 now.
Radio is 5.17.05.23
Need help!
Edit: after point 9 in the picture, the device reboots but doesn't boto further than the HTC Logo. THen it vibrates 7 times until it reboots again, then it vibrates 7 times until it reboots again...and so on, and so on...all in a loop.
Edit 2: after having the phone rested on my table over night, this morning I put the battery back in and it worked...a bit. It booted correctly and I configured the settings (debugging-mode, etc). However, trying to do unrevoked again, the device stuck at rebooting again.
Still need help, plz
Edit 3: so desperate --> plz help
You don't run unrevoked on it. If it's still in a bootloop, then flash the ruu again, then use Revolutionary to s-off. DO NOT USE OR DO ANYTHING ELSE.
1. Flash the RUU again.
2. Quick configure.
3. Use revolutionary.io.

So it worked. You're welcome.
To root, you either install a custom rom from recovery, or you stay stock, and flash SuperSU from recovery.

Well, it worked so far...I rooted und S-OFFed it, I think I even updated the radio to 32.54.00.32U_5.14.05.17 via the app "ROM Manager".
Now I try to partition the SD card, since doing that via ROM Manager from within the phone didn't work, BECAUSE MY PHOEN STILL DOESN'T BOOT CORRECTLY :/
(Sorry, not shouting at you...just let stuff out) ^^
Okay, I'm stuck with partitioning. Currently my Bootloader-Menu shows me that I have HBOOT 6.93-1002. Should I go to http://alpharev.nl/ and rename that
PB99IMG_cm7r2.zip to PB99IMG.zip and boot the device? What is this bravo_alphaspl-cm7r2.img?
I'm so sorry, but I think I messed everything up. Arrrgh
cm7r2 hboot is a different phone memory layout. Stock hboot has 250 mb system, cm7r2 has less system alocated memory, for smaller roms, and gives you more data space.
If you want to patition your sd-card, install 4ext recovery.

Yes, I want to do that (even with 4ext recovery). My questions herefor is, if
1) this is within the correct sequence (since I still doesn't have the mildwild cm7 custom ROM installed yet)
2) how I do it with 4ext? do I need to rename the files given at http://alpharev.nl/ ?
3) when I successfully partitioned the SD-card, how do I continue? There are 2 Parts of the mildwild cm7 custom rom...
Thx in advance
Edit: I did anything as suggested in the instructions (put it on SD-card, update yes, reboot no). Then I chose "Recovery" but nothing happens. THe phone is just stuck on the HTC-logo bootscreen :/
Edit 2: okay I followed abaaabbbs instructions in another thread/your sig and installed fastboot via adb. (See attch.)
Now I need to wait a while with battery removed since my phone doens't boot at all. I can only enter bootloader menu etc, but not regular boot to android on phone itself. always stuck with HTC-logo and/or vibrating 7 times , then rebooting to htc-logo again... :/

Shouldn't my HBOOT say CM7r2 instead of 6.93.1002 ?

It booted...once. To the regular android menu...still it doesn't boot to recovery at all...should I re-install recovery? like CWM?

Sorry, I tried to answer that directly but as a new user I wasn't allowed to edit my prompt response for 5 minutes....
Oops, again
As above, I want to install mildwild cm7. I would prefer to isntall 4ext instead of CWM again....
I'm on mildwild 7 great rom yes I would recommend 4ext recovery, have u downloaded all parts of mildwild an put them on the root of ur SD card

Shouldn't I change HBOOT to cm7r2 first and make the partitions with 4ext first?
Or do I do it all in one step?
Edit: in one of the seldom times the phone actually booted to regular android, I installed the 4ext recovery again - this time via astro data manager (installed the 4ext-recovery-APK from SD-card). Well, when I enter the bootloader and chose "RECOVERY", it still is stuck at the HTC-Logo...

[Q] Getting stuck need some guidance flashing rom

Hi all
DHD 2.35 GB
3.13.351.4
Used HTC hboot unlock
Used ace tool to root and flash cwm
So phone is hboot unlock rooted and have cwm.
Tried using hack kit to s-off but when it pushes the PD98IMG phone re boots into cwm.
Tried manually booting to hboot and it loads the PD98IMG but after loading says failed or wrong version.
Read somewhere that hack kit has to have locked hboot to work so tried the ace tool to re-lock hboot and that fails.
When it says phone will restart it restarts to cwm
Tried flashing a few roms as is using cwm (cm10.1, slimbean, viper)
cwm says the roms installed but either phone boots as normal stock 2.35 or hangs at htc screen
Luckily i did a full cwm backup so easy to restore if it doesnt boot.
IS THERE A METHOD OF FLASHING ROMS THAT DOESN'T NEED S-OFF?
IS THERE ANOTHER METHOD TO S-OFF
Any help greatly appreciated

It does not boot because you need to flash the custom rom boot.img in fastboot after flashing the rom in CWM.
Ok so this is what I did
In CWM factory reset, wipe cash, wipe dalviQ, wipe battery stats
CWM installed zip from card
chose cm-10.1-20130311-UNOFFICIAL-ace.zip
This completed in a couple of minutes no errors
back in hboot / fastboot
flashed boot.img from cm-10.1.... zip but get sig verify fail......
fastboot flash boot boot.img
sending boot 3824k
okay
writing boot
(bootloader) signature checking.....
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished
What an i doing wrong?
Cheers
Stu
You need to re-unlock your bootloader. And AAHK is retired and the server hosting the files it needs has been pulled.

hboot already shows as unlocked
i never relocked it
In 1st post you're mentioning "either boots to 2.3.5"....in the 2nd again missing system and data wipe.
Not 100% but I guess you at least need radio s-off for flashing ROMs.
If I were you, I'd rather not try.

If I helped, please press Thanks...

This is false. You can flash ROMs with S-On if you have an unlocked bootloader.
My mistake.
Stuuk, "the Bible" says: "the other way of gaining root is flashing custom ROM after unlocking bootloader."
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2168500
So, did you wipe the system and data after nandroid backup, and before flashing custom ROM?

Bananagronola was right
Even though hboot showed as unlocked it didnt act like it was.
I ran the htdev unlocker again then I was able to fastboot flash recovery 4ext (over cwm)
In the same session i was also able to fastboot flash a boot.img (which was failing previously)
So booted into 4ext recovery and flashed cm-10.1-20130311-UNOFFICIAL-ace and gapps again after wiping everything.
For good measure I fastboot flashed the boot.img again and hey presto everything works!!!
Well i say everything works however for some reason the touch screen seems a little unresponsive in this rom.
But now I know the procedure I'll be trying a few more roms.
Thanks for all the help

[Q] Need help, "Can't mount sdcard"

Hi all, I'm a really novice rooter with the HTC One M7 for Verizon.
I know I'm S-Off with HBOOT 1.56,
and all of a sudden my phone just automatically boots into CWM Recovery.
I've tried loading old recoveries, old zip files, and the response is always
"Can't mount sdcard."
Again, although I'm rooted, I'm pretty much a novice.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hoping I didnt' lose this phone.

Bricking your phone is near impossible nowadays. I wouldn't fret too much.
Are you sure that you're flashing ROMs and recoveries meant for the m7vzw (HTC One for Verizon) and not just the regular m7 (normal HTC One)?
If you're sure that you're flashing for m7zw, have you tried flashing a new recovery through fastboot? i.e.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery newrecoveryname.img
I would ruu. Then set up your favorite recovery and Rom. Start fresh. It will wipe everything so back up your files.

I'm running CWM recovery, which says that I can't mount the SD Card.
I then tried what you suggested, installed twrp recovery, and now I'm stuck in a reboot loop with the htc screen.
I'm not sure what to do now.

Have you tried RUUing like what Brymaster suggested?
After installing twrp did you flash a Rom. Because if there is no Rom loaded it will just bootloop

I'm trying to flash a rom but can't get adb to recognize my phone in sideload mode. Feeling really stuck at this point
You have a otg cable to put a Rom on a stick then flash that way. So no Rom on your phone at all?
