IMO, this is definitely cool but more novelty than useful. I haven't rooted my GNote 10.1 yet but I have noticed that I cannot move my apps to the SD card. Since both this and my One will be on Jelly Bean, I suspect to encounter the same roadblock. Maybe I'm a minimalist and don't really recognize it, but I don't like the idea of having to add that to my keyring.

I see its usefulness in loading up an SD card with a couple movies or tv shows - watching them and then replacing them with others. Keeps the content off the device and can load up to 64gb of content without touching the phones storage. pretty neat!

I like it because I have over half of my 64gb card filled with music and even though I do have it uploaded to Google music I use neutron to play it and right now there's no way to stream it to neutron

There was already thread on this in general section. Few of us have contributed so should get it in July.

Just contributed. I like to do my TiBu backups to SDcard among other things.

Same here just backed them up since I bought my HTC One 2 days ago. With 32GB the phone should have enough for everything and then when I want to watch some videos I can just plug in my Microsdcard 32GB from my old Captivate Glide and have access to all my Videos. I must say I really like the idea.

I really don't like it. It looks atrocious and leaves itself open to be broken very easily. Why can't they just make a smaller connection and have a cable that wrap around to the back of the device which then connects to what we already have available in flash drives?

This is a really rough sketch, but what you have here is the smallest connection possible (Very little sticks out) and a flat cable then wraps around to the other side of the device to the the actual flash memory module or whatever. It could be anything like a card reader or even what is found on the inside of a flash drive. (Which is already really small) The housing containing this could have an adhesive side so it can stick to the device. There are adhesives that basically don't lose their stickiness so you can remove it when you're done and reattach it when you want to.

You do realize you can buy the device then simply use a cable extension to place it on the rear. If the cable does not exist you can simply make an extension yourself or simply use adapters to get the required connections needed.

very nice idea

Even if that were physically possible, the phone will power the OTG card reader for as long as it's plugged in. Not only would your phone never go into deep sleep, it would keep the 5V boost converter turned on indefinitely. The battery life on that setup would suck.
The product being Kickstarted seems to be meant for swapping files into/out of onboard flash or being actively used (watching movies, torrenting from public wifi, etc)

I don't know where I went wrong, but you're confused about my idea. It is essentially the SAME THING as the kickstarter device... Only difference is the way it looks. Instead of plugging in a device which then hangs directly out of the port you have something that sticks out only a faction of the other device which then sticks on the backside of the device... It is out of your way and less likely to get damaged.

I'm aware, but I'm confused why it was even mentioned. Nothing I said insinuated that that device was going to be there semi-permanently. The only thing the market offers now is either a dongle or a device like this kickstarter one. The KS device is moving in the right direction, but having a device protrude out of a fragile connection bothers me. My idea helps to fix this issue.

USB Port broken - Stuck in boot screen

Here we go:
When I recharged my HTC in my car, I got in a little accident and the HTC flew around the car a little bit.
Long story short; the USB/Charge port broke and I got it fixed by a friend.
Took him a few days because it was totally messed up, but hey, I could recharge it.
He said he couldn't fix the USB connection, but no problem: I still had bluetooth.
However, yesterday I got really stupid...
I tried to flash the rom using my bluetooth connection.
All went fine, but ofcourse, when rebooting it got stuck.
Tried the soft reset, tried the hard reset, but no luck.
Of course I also tried all available tools (mtty) but damn, stupid me again, that won't work since the USB connection won't work; my PC doesn't even detect that there is a device connected.
So here's my question:
Is there a way to get the HTC out of bootloader menu without the use of the USB port?
As I am afraid there isn't a way, does anyone have a layout/schematic of the HTC Universal hardware layout so I can try to fix the USB connection myself?
The friend that fixed it last time moved, so I'll have to try it myself .
here is a link to the HTC Universal service manual, maybe you can find some help there.

Yeah okay, it showed the port itself, but not where it's connected on the motherboard.
Anyone really technical who can point it out?

My USB port broken also.
My USB port pulled out also. I did find my connector, even though I purchased a replacement USB off eBay. My eyes are not good enough to resolder, and am not sure what is on the other side of board that may be effected should I try. I just downloaded the PDF file ya'all listed, so now I will check it out in depth. I would prefer having a professional fix this, but here in Memphis Tn USA I have had better luck finding polar bears. I recently got this unit so I know nothing! I do realize that it probably needs to be upgraded from WM5 to WM6. I have also noticed that replacement mother boards are available also on eBay. I just purchased an used JasJar with good mother board but broken screen thinking about using it for parts to fix mine.
Hugh (toolmanfedex)
Hey
My USB port broke off, and I lost it... I dropped the phone out of my motorcycle tankbag (since it opens on the "bottom" end) the impact was severe enough that the case fell appart and speakers popped out, all the wires intact, I put it back together but the port is lost... it still works of course but my battery ran out, can't charge it without the usb port.
Anyway, I see it's delicate but not that delicate, i want to solder a new one on myself what I have to do is find one and here is my question:
Which type/sort of ports work, do I need an htc-universal specific one or is it standard and just any of the correct size where contacts overlap, is good enough?
If the answer is standard I'll get'em at the nearest electronic store, if not, where to get'em? used off ebay or some useful links any of you may have handy?
Thanks in advance,
ciao

The connector you want is a "USB-to-go" or a "USB Mini-AB" SMT Scoket any good electronics component retailer should have them. The big question is have you damaged the pads on the motherboard?
oi, thanks mates, I checked that retailer out, found a local retailer with these components, if it's a standard one, it should work, I'll try to see if it works before soldering (using some duct tape or something I guess).
I'm pretty sure I haven't damaged the pads on the motherboard, the thing just "gently" broke off (as gentle as you can imagine a break can be). How would damage look like? They look intact really... and it's a big enough patch that I feel confident soldering on.
I ordered one of these connectors and should be here tomorrow. Thanks again for info.
---
well apparently not... only A or B in stock, but not the -AB in all the local retailers, guess I'll grab it from the ebay one Thanks for that info too again.
Now then, several months later, my usb socket broke off again.
I really lost trust in my universal, it feels just... touchy, like it's a human baby, that's how I act when I carry it around and don't like it. Since I don't want my mobile device to be such a "burden" really I'm thinking about replacing it.
I'm not an elec-technician, in fact I've soldered a few things in my life, but this one, I somehow did, I didn't have fine enough tools so some of the contacts got spilled and interconnected and I peeled off the links with a boxcutter knife later. It was a few-hour endeavour. Yeah crude and barbaric but in the end, I managed that without damaging the motherboard. It worked, active syncinc, everything, but I felt it wasn't really stable. Since I don't have an external battery charger, my uni is sadly out of order now.
I have a question:
How to solder this thing back on properly?
And when done so, how sturdy is it? Sturdy enough?
Thanks, regards
The USB connector is a pain to solder as you need a big tip to solder to the big pads that hold it in place and a small tip to solder the actual USB data pins. If it is done correctly it can out last the Uni. I can repair it for you if you like, it wont be the first and I'm sure it wont be the last. PM me if you are intrested.
DONT try to resoldere it urself, u need skill and especially a proper LOW WATT soldering tool!! its also easy tofuck it up, permanently.
i'm not sure if u can find electronic guys willing to do this ( cause its a small job for them), but ur best bet would be to visit the local guy who does PS2/XBOX/GAMECUBE modchip iinstalls...he'll solder ur usb port in 2 minutes.
Just to let you know I've been a electroinc engineer for 15+ years this sort of thing is my bread and butter. If you want to see the standard I work too check out the 128Mb Upgrade page thats my work and the kind of equipment I have.
But I agree with Starik do try it yourself unless your are skilled at soldering and have the right tools.

Car Mount, hardware and software...

One of the things I've been trying to do ever since my G1, is to get a nice car mount and then use apps like Tasker and Google's Car Home to fire up automatically when it's docked in phone mount.
Here's a picture of the final product. If you're interested at all in what all I did, or in springing for a mount from ProClipUSA you can read more about it on my blog; part one and part two

Great idea! But to simplify things, why not just use an NFC tag programed to run the app of your choice and adjust any settings then stick that on the mount?

Originally that was exactly my intent. I wanted to show a very cool use for NFC by integrating it into my car dock. (I even blogged about that too ).
I couldn't exactly get NFC to work the way I wanted to. So far, there doesn't seem to be an event that I can trigger of for when an NFC tag is no longer in range. I believe it was possible to do what I wanted via NFC, but it would have wound up being a little more complicated than I wanted. Maybe as hardware and software improves, NFC will become more useful for things like this.
Those mounts are nice I guess but I got a suction cup one for $4 that works very well, the one you listed was around $65 for the two parts. My Bluetooth adapter was $15 and you spent $99. Seems kind of crazy man.

Yeah, I got a little spendy on the mount, I won't argue that. For what it's worth, my previous mount was the binder-clip mount that I talked about in the first article. That thing was great, but the vents in my "new" didn't work quite well and I wanted something with integrated power that didn't involve all sorts of power cords running across the dashboard.
For awhile, I actually toyed with the idea of disassembling a cigarette lighter power adapter and hard wiring it into the center console and then routing that cable up through car's ducting.
I'm pretty happy with what I got for the price, but the installation is really nice plus I can swap out the bits on the mount and use it to mount other devices too. I really liked that feature.

You could always have another one somewhere close to set it back. But I never even thought of a trigger after you remove the NFC tag. Thought it was implemented.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised when there wasn't a way for Tasker (or something else) to kick off an action when an NFC tag was no longer in range too. It seems like something that should be easily implemented down the road.
I thought about doing a 2nd NFC tag to clear it, but I didn't really want to have to touch my phone to something else every time I exited the car.
The closest I could think of, would be to create a Tasker Task to set a variable, use something like NFC Task Launcher to launch that task. And then to create a profile that says as long as the phone is powered, the variable is set then it's in the Car profile. Then, the exit actions for that profile would be to set the variable back to the original value.
Theoretically, that would accomplish something along the lines of what I wanted but it didn't seem like a better option than using Power + the Position Sensor.
Now on the off chance that I wind up having problems because there are other situations (other than driving) where I have the phone plugged into power and in that position, I may have to think of another scenario.
I'd probably just get a head unit with a USB port but like you mentioned it'd be super easier to hardwire an adapter into a 12v wire and put a USB port in the dash.

This is where i was thinking, cause i use my phone to stream videos when plugged in, and usually watch them full screen.
But i just watched a YouTube video demonstrating the NFC tags. And he had a profile for "Movie mode" and all he did to restore the other mode was tap the NFC tag again. So i wonder if there is a setting for like "restoring" what the NFC tag changed. What are you using to program the NFC tag? NFC Tasker from the market? I think if you use a PC reader/writer you have more functionality.

Yeah, in your situation I don't think my solution would work well. Unless you did something quirky like watched your movies with the USB port on the phone sticking out to the left and in the car dock have the USB port facing right (or vice versa)
The guy in the video tapped the same NFC tag again to revert his settings? I'd be interested to see how he did that if you've got the URL handy. Although I imagine that I'd have to un-dock the phone, re-dock it (to clear the car mode), and then un-dock it one more time, that's not nearly as convenient as it is right now.
To I've been using NFC Task Launcher and Tagstand Writer to read&write my different tags for use with Tasker. In my case, using NFC Task Launcher I was launching a particular Task configured in Tasker. NFC Task Launcher has a library of things it can do on it's own, but nothing quite like I knew I could do via Tasker.
I'm unsure of what actually gets written to the NFC tag, I think for the most time it's URIs. I'm quietly hoping that there's some really cool applications for NFC that just haven't been developed quite yet.
I'm not aware of any PC NFC reader/writer apps, but that's because I've just been using my phone to do it. If there's a more robust app out there, I'd be interested in checking it out and seeing what all I can do.

Features are nice but why did they put that curve at the bottom instead of rounding it off. It just makes the thing look unbalanced and adds extra footprint for no apparent purpose, other than style, which is questionable.

I think the meenova is better for someone wanting to extend storage but this device is more useful for people wanting to transfer large files fast between PC and tablet. MTP mode is just slower on many PCs and wireless takes some setup which is ok on your own machine but more of a pain when you want to grab some files from someone else quickly.

I will upload my pictures some days later.
Some regret is that it is not 16G or more. I hope to keep some movie in it.
Couldn't you just get a USB OTG cable and then use whatever flash drive/card reader/etc you want? The micro usb end of the stick in the OP probably is just that anyways, hard wired to the flash chip.
Sure you could, but products like these are about convenience.
I think I may either go with this

Bluetooth connection while in bootloader

As you might know, the bootloader of both the LG G Watch and the Samsung Gear Live can be unlocked.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/0...nlock-the-bootloader-and-root-the-lg-g-watch/
This is necessary (at least for now) to root the watch an there is even already a first custom rom for the G Watch out there.
However, this requires a direct USB connection to the Android Wear device.
The Moto 360's specs are still unknown, but the device won't have any kind of wired connection.
Is it (theoretically) possible to set up a ADB connection to a Android Wear device over Bluetooth while in bootloader?
i was wondering the same the other day
ADB without physical connections? o_0
Not sure if this would work, but have a look at this :

thanks adicool, but from what I'v read so far that should only get you ADB access while in Android
You can reboot into Fastboot from there, but once in Fastboot the watches seem to lose the Bluetooth connection and you have to use the USB connection through the charging cradle - which is not possible in case of the Moto due to wireless charging

Ooh ya, didn't think of that one ! I hope we somehow get access to bluetooth in the boot loader. Hopefully we will know more tomorrow after the official announcement of the Moto 360

This is scary. I may have to wait before buying it to make sure we will be able to mod it. What if it only does OTA updates through the phone? We may never get a custom recovery/rom [emoji33]
I wonder if the cradle can conductivly transfer data

i figured it had to do with the new updates allowing you to use your watch away from your phone
Any news from happy owners? Does it even have fastboot mode?

"If you have pressed the power button for 15-20 seconds, and the watch has vibrated twice your Moto 360 will launch into Bootloader mode.
Simply press the Power key to exit Bootloader mode and power up the Moto 360 as usual."
I guess there are similar pins like on the gwatch and Samsung gear live but they are hidden behind the end of the watch band and you have to make a custom USB connector.

Just took off my watch band, no pins. Also bootloader tells you to connect a USB cord, so no bluetooth.

Looks like it's under the FCC approval sticker (if that's actually a sticker). I'm basing this off of the iFixit teardown.

Yep, just saw that. Will try again in a little bit to get a USB connection working.

Be careful. EVEN iFixit broke the plastic cap on the back of the watch. There is quite a lot of double-sided tape. You break that and watertight/dusttight operation goes out the window.

I would hope he can peel off a sticker without cracking the back casing. Looks like it just needs some small pogo pins and it will work great. Peeling the sticker off does likely remove the water and dust protection though.
Any news?
Have any of you guys got anything working?

I've been wondering the same thing. I have been tempted to try it myself but I would be stabbing blindly at it. Someone has to more knowledge to guide them than i do.
So I took it upon myself, turns out if you use a razor blade you can keep the FCC sticker in good condition, but since it exposes holes I would say bye bye IP67...
Band removes easily (use a tiny screwdriver to avoid damage):

You can see the FCC has that tell-tale waviness of a sticker:
Be careful, a razor blade slips in easily:
Sticker removed (you can see I slipped and creased it while removing):
Can't see anything?
How about now
I'm in the process of trying to bend a 5p connector to fit the really tight pin spacing they use...

Question Recommendations for direct transfer to microsd

Anyone have any first hand recommendations for a set up to transfer from the P6P directly to a micro SD? It's not something I've ever needed before so I'm a total babe in the woods regarding what would be best for this.
I plan on trying to use the phone to record a lot of footage away from any PC and would like to dump it to SD cards as I go to have a backup copy. I have a lot of 128gb microSD cards I use in my GoPros and drone.
Strong preference on "it just works" and is durable and not prone to user issues. It'll be attached to the phone and bouncing around in a running vest.
I'll be doing this during ultra marathons and will have no access to a PC for up to 30 hours (and some day up to 112 hours I hope as I want to try the Tahoe 200 or Big Foot 240) at a time. And it would help that it's braindead simple to do as toward the end of a race my mental acuity is a "tiny" bit less than it is sitting at my desk at home.
Anyway, my appreciation in advance for your time and guidance.
Just a thought here, and I'm not even sure it would work. But could you use your USB C to USB adapter and simply add maybe a flash drive? I'm not sure if you could map it to record directly to it though, but maybe you could transfer all your recordings?
I got a USB-C multi-port dongle for free off of Amazon years ago, reimbursed in exchange for an honest review. Has 2x USB-A 3.x, one full-size HDMI, and full-size and Micro SD slots. The particular one I got isn't on Amazon any longer. This kind of thing is similar although has even much more ports than mine. I used mine yesterday to transfer 200 GB+ of music and other files to the 6 Pro's internal storage.
My MicroSD card from my previous phone was in ExFAT format, so I had to buy Paragon's file system app from the Play Store in order to be able to read it on a Pixel (Google would have to pay Microsoft a royalty to add ExFAT support). Then I used the file manager of my choice, X-plore File Manager.

plug your microSD into this:
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07G5JV2B5/
then that assembly into either this:
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08HZ6PS61/
or this:
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07BS8SRWH/
...of course the microSD needs to be formatted to work with the phone, or just reformat it once connected to the phone
OTG flashstick. Plug and play.
I use a .5tb to do "dirty" backups of my onboard SD card. Primary backup is always hdds.
Only issue is if it takes a hard hit it may take out the port...
Wow, thank you everyone for all the great information. I really appreciate it!
Just wanted to say that I ended up getting the below item. It's made of metal which isn't obvious from the images on amazon and has a surprising amount of heft to it given it's size. Feels solid with no wiggle to the usb c male plug on it. Comes with one of those thin string key chain connectors as well which didn't come apart when I tugged the crap out of it.
Plugged it into my Pixel 2XL and it 'just worked' which honestly surprised me, having never needed something like this I was expecting it to be a chore to set up. I was easily able to copy files, media specifically, directly to my microsD cards without any problems.
The one gripe I have is the SD card doesn't 'lock' in. It's not at any danger of falling out but it does not have that press in *click*, press again *click* to pop it out that my GP's and drone has. It sticks out of the device about 3/16" of an inch to give you enough room to pull it back out. Just out of paranoia I would likely put the phone in a ziplock bag during a run when it's in my vest just to make sure if it somehow did get knocked out I wouldn't have to dig in the bottom of the vest trying to find it.
Amazon.com
Thanks again everyone.
This is what I have and use all the time direct USB C to MicroSD card reader. No extra dongles or long cables: C352 Type-C MicroSD Card Reader... https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07YGXR8N3
Really great to use when on vacation and downloading GoPro video to the phone, quicker than going wireless.
In 2014 I bought a Corsair 64 GB Flash Voyager OTG flash drive with Micro USB connector on one end (with a cap on it, which came with something to tie it to the main body), and a USB-A 3.0 connector on the other end. Looks like below. If I were going to buy a modern one I'd probably prefer one with a built-in cap again.
Edit 1: Actually, here's one with a cap and USB-A on the other end (second image), although I'd be torn which end to keep the cap on.
Edit 2: And now I see one with a cap for each end (third image).

Nice, that's a first world problem I have, I have both PC and Mac so I'm always having to throw adapter's on things to move stuff between them. A double ended one would be really useful that works with both.
