Best DPI for Galaxy Note 2 - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering what is the best DPI for my Galaxy Note 2, I tried other people's suggestions but it didn't work for me so I was wondering how Google decided on their DPI. Considering they're in charge of Android they must know the optimal level so I used the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 4 as reference:

So if Google designed a 5.5 inch screen device with 720x1280 resolution, it would most likely be at 270 DPI
I know this won't help a lot of you how it helped me but just thought I'd share it just on the hunch that it might at least help the 1% :silly:

Obvious you didn't check Wikipedia yourself, not that's academically reliable in any way but DPI is a unit of measurement for printer resolution not for display resolution. It's like saying a football field is 100 litres long er something.
So take your own advice and refrain from further posting. We will appreciate it very much.

Ok. I gave you the chance to research, but well... DPI is the pixel density of your screen that can be soft-modded to make your display "look" different. There are many apps that can actually change your DPI. Note 2's DPI is 320 by default. 240 DPI is the best one IMO for this type of screen size.
With all due respect, there are thousands of forums in XDA where this topic is being discussed.

Stop arguing and RTFF. You are basically saying something silly like: 'root' is for plants not for a phone.

downloaded texdoider DPI and adjusted to 240 DPI, look so much sharper.
See, I learn something everyday.

Well, the screen is physically 265 DPI, so this is the one I'm using. It looks good. Just set up your launcher to use a 5x7 grid in the drawer.

Do you have before and after screenshots by anychance?

I'll provide them the next time I change nightly, as the setting gets overwritten when I flash a new version of my rom.

With 265 dpi is the phone app all messed up.

Do you believe that the stock ROM will work fine with 26t dpi.
I'm rooted but once I tried to change the dpi setting in the build.prop file and after restart my display was great but I've got tooooo many FC's

Hmm, I did it through the physical screen and I got 267.02 PPI, so we're still dangerously close to the same number mines just rounded lol, thanks a lot for the input though I really appreciate it :highfive:

With any DPI change the phone app loses proportions but with 270 it's easily passable only thing that changes is the dial pad is smaller and more to the left, but yeah nothing "all messed up" :fingers-crossed:
I suggest you try it though, give it some time and it feels premium
Edit: Oh and if it bothers you leave the phone app how it is, I use the Xposed Framework method so I get to pick what I want changed, very useful look it up

How about any other apps that have problems, I have heard there is a problem with the camera app, with a dpi change and the play store.

Change the system ui with the xposed app settings. Then you won't have to worry about apps messing up. You can choose which apps you want to change.

So if we change the systemui to have the dpi of 270, what resolution shall we change it too, (default).

240 dpi, Nova launcher and icons set at 120 % on Nova settings, Look and feel, icons size .

You don't have to change the resolution if you don't want to. I think that gives you tablet ui. Not sure though.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using xda premium

Looks good thanks, I changed the resolution on the Gmail app too, 1280x800 and got the tablet ui, it looks great.
Nova seems to have a small gap between the top of the screen and the notification bar, that's with the systemui's dpi changed to 270 and Nova changed to 270, is this normal.

LCD Density + Go Launcher

Having finally achieved root today (LOL - 24hrs after I received the device!), I tried to live with Touchwiz. However, one thing that was bothering me was the huge icons...having just come from an Atrix which has a 4" display and slightly higher-res screen, I wanted to use more screen real estate.
So I installed LCD Density.
Problem is, with TW, it's a complete was. The dumb "dots" that are normally at the bottom of the screen just "move up" and waste the extra space you've just won.
Solution - install a launcher such as Go Launcher. Results are that icons are smaller with more screen real estate. Magical!

Get LCD Density changer and set to 202 and save. Then hit menu key, settings and tick "Set as my system density"" - it will now be that every time you boot, so max sure it's a density that works....
or, edit the build.prop directly and change the density figure there. Save, reboot....voila! Both need root.
Try changing font to Helvetica S from display settings. It fits better than droid font on higher res

pictures do not look good at 200
240 is the correct dpi for HD at this screen resolution.
Was running 190 on my DHD looked better than 240. You need to edit build.prop once rooted for a permanent DPI change.
You can permanently chance the density using blade buddy, which it's free in the market.
Does anyone know why people are using 202?
I calculated the options by doing 800 * 240 and 480 * 240, then looking for numbers that left integers when devided by both. So the same number of sub pixels were used to make each pixel. Doing this gave me 200 not 202 as the best.

Is there any way to stop dialer looking screwed up when you change the lcd density?
It makes the keypad smaller and off centre.
Also in the camera app the buttons become misaligned.

changed dpi, have some questions

I changed the screen dpi to 200 but now miui launcher looks weird.
So I'm using adw launcher with 1 extra row and looks nice, however I like the way miui launcher functions, like when I install a app it immediately puts it on desktop, just like the iphone.
Is there any launcher that acts like this and also allows to change number of rows and columns?
this is miui default, folders and other widgets look even weirder

You change the LCD density string in build.prop to set it permanently, or use lcd density changer from the market to do a temp change.
You can use a tool called "Absolute System" to edit the build.prop easily.

changing the lcd density has the same same effect as changing the resolution on your pc monitor. the phone will fit more on the display, so smaller icons and text etc...
any of this apps are changing the phone dialer too ?.....???
None of the sammy aps like dialer change with DPI changes, everything looks smaller and a bit crap, you will either need to find a ROM with DPI changes built in for that or there might be a theme you can use maybe.

Yes, TouchWiz doesn't play nice with DPI changes. Use Go Contacts (includes dialer) for dialer - I haven't found a MULTI-DPI camera replacement yet tho.

Changing LCD Density
Changing the density changes the whole phone - if you set density to a lower number everything will be smaller on the screen and then you can fit more items on the screen. A higher number will make things bigger and fit less.
An unfortunate side effect of changing DPI however is that quite a lot of apps don't like it and will force close when you try and open them. For example, I just set mine to 200dpi and Angry Birds FC's.
The Market is another app that seems to be fairly DPI sensitive, however in my case right now running CM7 nightly the Market is working fine at 200dpi.
Another effect can also be black bands around apps that are not written to scale to screen DPI but rather with hard coded sizes for LDPI/MDPI/HDPI.
Cheers!

like I said in my first post, I'm using ADW and it works fine with it, I was looking for a miui like launcher, with all the apps on desk and no app drawer, probably doesn't exist.
While I was on miui rom I didn't encounter problems with the apps I used, this goes from games to standard apps, like the market.
Now I'm on stock and I saw the dialer is small, but no problem otherwise, when I get called the slider works fine.
the advantage is it makes the screen seem like higher res, browser fits a lot more content, holding it next to a sensation it looks the same, one difference I encountered on sensation is a game megajump, doesn't fill out the screen while on sgs2 with dpi change it still does.
it probably looks so good because of the samoled + subpixel density stuff
It makes it look extremely hi-res. I can't, no, WON'T have my phone at stock DPI, ever.

At 200 (I've also tested 190,160,165) I noticed a few small things but all graphical. Like the toggle buttons on the status bar, the text for sound is lower than the other buttons, the dialer looks out of wack, the tabs in the XDA app have a line running through them and at 160 the ics launcher looked a little funky. Since I lowered it to 200 I now use the go dialer but as far as functionality there really haven't been any issues.

there is an older version of the market that is modified to not heck density. I dont know if there is a version of the new market that is available that does the same but you can find the 2.x.x version(I prefer I older market) in theme and apps. the title of the thread is "downgrading market" or something like that
im at 200 and i can install apps from the market just fine
I'm at 160, only problem so far is the notification bar doesn't swipe down properly when in the desktop dock.
Also, don't do 100. My phone nearly exploded.
Edit: A LOT of apps seem to be hard-coded for 800x480, and look strange with the density bumped.
I use 205. Which puts it near qHD resolution
200dpi makes the signal bars/3G icon look a bit weird, so i find 205 is the best.

My personal favorite is 240 which is 25% less than the standard 320. It is best if you could use the dpi per app mod if you are running a touch wiz based rom. I am personally on the aosp vallina rom and loving the customization. Some apps work better with a higher dpi like the one you use to scan for example a starbucks card and other like email work better at a lower dpi. With android you can customized your dpi per application.
I use 220 system wide, and make exceptions as needed.

I am using Liquid Smooth, Android 4.2.2, Matrix kernel overclocked to 2.0GHZ, at 182 dpi. I love it!! Its like having a tablet as a phone. Google Play shows completely different, gmail is in dual view mode, and everything just shows up so much clearer and fresher. I wouldn't go to 160 dpi as things are too small for me to tap on while I drive. 182 dpi is by far the best resolution to me.
Nice one!
I loved your idea but I would like to point out that you have disregarded the proportions by taking the average of the two devices. Mathematically speaking, If the display was ((4.7+7)/2) = 5.85 inches your calculation would be sound. But if you consider the proportions we get,
213+[(7-5.5)/(7-4.7)]*(320-213) --> Using the interpolation method (Never thought I would apply my statistics knowledge like this)
= 282.78 dpi
Though personal preferences may differ.
I love 182 dpi but I was curious I'm running touchwiz rom and using xposed. Is there something I can change the DPI on to get the status bar to not show up all small? Thanks!

DPI App scaling

As the title goes, how do the stock apps (dialer and such) scale with lower dpi? I've had many Samsung phones and am very annoyed with having to have xposed app settings module to set dpi to stock values, or else everything looks wonky. I know not all phones have that sort of issue though.

I always lowered the DPI on my previous HTC phones, but I've read that if you change the DPI on the 10, then the HTC lockscreen becomes a huge mess.
Supposedly you need to uninstall or disable the HTC lockscreen in order for the DPI change to work properly (which will then give you the stock Android lockscreen). Will the fingerprint scanner still work then?
And I've read that a DPI of 600 works very well on the 10. Correct me if I'm wrong with the lockscreens.

That solved some issues of games looking like crap but my home screen it's now shifted left.

Use Solid Explorer or RootExplorer, go to your system/Priv-app and change HTCLockscreen.apk to xxHTCLockScreen.bak or something. Then DPI changes work fine for everything else, have mine set at 560.

Thank you for your reply buddy. Have you gone any lower? Or does that already give you a fair amount of extra space? I run 440 on my note 4 but the screen is much larger so that would probably be insane on the 10
I found 560 to be my sweet spot on the Note 5/S7e/10. I also shrink down all my icons in Nova to basically the minimum, but text size seems perfect there for me. Here's a general example of how my phones are all set up at the moment:

how much battery have people been saving lowering DPI? Seems to me the screen is sucking most of my power so in theory would be able to save a lot of power by lowering res/DPI

I have honestly never seen much of a difference but then again I'm usually always lower than stock. I can imagine it being a very minimal difference.

You're not lowering the resolution by changing the DPI. The screen is what the screen is, and lowering actual resolution would simply shrink the viewable area with a black box around it. Battery gains would probably be negligible, and that's only if you do a lot of gaming/3D performance. Nonexistant for everyday use.

Honestly that looks like stock dpi lol. I'm just gonna have to root this thing already and see for myself, had to wait a couple days and make sure my hardware is all gravy ?

560 is a sweet spot for sure, thanks for that recommendation. Have you tried using the fingerprint scanner after fixing the lock screen?
Yeah, works fine, why?
