Best DPI for Galaxy Note 2 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

I was wondering what is the best DPI for my Galaxy Note 2, I tried other people's suggestions but it didn't work for me so I was wondering how Google decided on their DPI. Considering they're in charge of Android they must know the optimal level so I used the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 4 as reference:

So if Google designed a 5.5 inch screen device with 720x1280 resolution, it would most likely be at 270 DPI
I know this won't help a lot of you how it helped me but just thought I'd share it just on the hunch that it might at least help the 1% :silly:

My personal favorite is 240 which is 25% less than the standard 320. It is best if you could use the dpi per app mod if you are running a touch wiz based rom. I am personally on the aosp vallina rom and loving the customization. Some apps work better with a higher dpi like the one you use to scan for example a starbucks card and other like email work better at a lower dpi. With android you can customized your dpi per application.

I use 220 system wide, and make exceptions as needed.

I use 240 system wide only changes I needed to make were to contacts, camera, and calculator apps. Also the samsung keyboard didnt like the 240 dpi but there is a mod for that. I like the look at 240. Couldnt imagine going any lower.

I am using Liquid Smooth, Android 4.2.2, Matrix kernel overclocked to 2.0GHZ, at 182 dpi. I love it!! Its like having a tablet as a phone. Google Play shows completely different, gmail is in dual view mode, and everything just shows up so much clearer and fresher. I wouldn't go to 160 dpi as things are too small for me to tap on while I drive. 182 dpi is by far the best resolution to me.

Nice one!
I loved your idea but I would like to point out that you have disregarded the proportions by taking the average of the two devices. Mathematically speaking, If the display was ((4.7+7)/2) = 5.85 inches your calculation would be sound. But if you consider the proportions we get,
213+[(7-5.5)/(7-4.7)]*(320-213) --> Using the interpolation method (Never thought I would apply my statistics knowledge like this)
= 282.78 dpi
Though personal preferences may differ.

I love 182 dpi but I was curious I'm running touchwiz rom and using xposed. Is there something I can change the DPI on to get the status bar to not show up all small? Thanks!

LCD Density + Go Launcher

Having finally achieved root today (LOL - 24hrs after I received the device!), I tried to live with Touchwiz. However, one thing that was bothering me was the huge icons...having just come from an Atrix which has a 4" display and slightly higher-res screen, I wanted to use more screen real estate.
So I installed LCD Density.
Problem is, with TW, it's a complete was. The dumb "dots" that are normally at the bottom of the screen just "move up" and waste the extra space you've just won.
Solution - install a launcher such as Go Launcher. Results are that icons are smaller with more screen real estate. Magical!

Get LCD Density changer and set to 202 and save. Then hit menu key, settings and tick "Set as my system density"" - it will now be that every time you boot, so max sure it's a density that works....
or, edit the build.prop directly and change the density figure there. Save, reboot....voila! Both need root.
Try changing font to Helvetica S from display settings. It fits better than droid font on higher res

pictures do not look good at 200
240 is the correct dpi for HD at this screen resolution.
Was running 190 on my DHD looked better than 240. You need to edit build.prop once rooted for a permanent DPI change.
You can permanently chance the density using blade buddy, which it's free in the market.
Does anyone know why people are using 202?
I calculated the options by doing 800 * 240 and 480 * 240, then looking for numbers that left integers when devided by both. So the same number of sub pixels were used to make each pixel. Doing this gave me 200 not 202 as the best.

It makes the keypad smaller and off centre.
Also in the camera app the buttons become misaligned.

changed dpi, have some questions

I changed the screen dpi to 200 but now miui launcher looks weird.
So I'm using adw launcher with 1 extra row and looks nice, however I like the way miui launcher functions, like when I install a app it immediately puts it on desktop, just like the iphone.
Is there any launcher that acts like this and also allows to change number of rows and columns?
this is miui default, folders and other widgets look even weirder

changing the lcd density has the same same effect as changing the resolution on your pc monitor. the phone will fit more on the display, so smaller icons and text etc...
any of this apps are changing the phone dialer too ?.....???
None of the sammy aps like dialer change with DPI changes, everything looks smaller and a bit crap, you will either need to find a ROM with DPI changes built in for that or there might be a theme you can use maybe.

Changing LCD Density
Changing the density changes the whole phone - if you set density to a lower number everything will be smaller on the screen and then you can fit more items on the screen. A higher number will make things bigger and fit less.
An unfortunate side effect of changing DPI however is that quite a lot of apps don't like it and will force close when you try and open them. For example, I just set mine to 200dpi and Angry Birds FC's.
The Market is another app that seems to be fairly DPI sensitive, however in my case right now running CM7 nightly the Market is working fine at 200dpi.
Another effect can also be black bands around apps that are not written to scale to screen DPI but rather with hard coded sizes for LDPI/MDPI/HDPI.
Cheers!

like I said in my first post, I'm using ADW and it works fine with it, I was looking for a miui like launcher, with all the apps on desk and no app drawer, probably doesn't exist.
While I was on miui rom I didn't encounter problems with the apps I used, this goes from games to standard apps, like the market.
Now I'm on stock and I saw the dialer is small, but no problem otherwise, when I get called the slider works fine.
the advantage is it makes the screen seem like higher res, browser fits a lot more content, holding it next to a sensation it looks the same, one difference I encountered on sensation is a game megajump, doesn't fill out the screen while on sgs2 with dpi change it still does.
it probably looks so good because of the samoled + subpixel density stuff
It makes it look extremely hi-res. I can't, no, WON'T have my phone at stock DPI, ever.

[Q] any issue wite non 1280x720 apps ?

im wonder, the nexus screen work at 1280x720, but still most of the apps on the market work with lower resolution, so all new nexus users will have some linited apps like the tablets that work with android ? and the lower resolution apps will still show like pixeld ?
Ics sandwich is supposed to address that so we will have to get one in hand or a knucklehead to write an in depth review. So far reviews are "ooo, look at the double rainbows."
I voided my warranty and your nexus.
I'm hoping so, games like those from Kairosoft ran pretty awful on my Honeycomb tablet.

Sensation is an hdpi device. I'm not certain, but I think Galaxy Nexus is the first xhdpi Android device. As such, apps that don't have xhdpi bitmaps might look a bit ugly until they get updated with xhdpi bitmaps, and apps that are hardcoded to support certain densities and didn't include xhdpi won't appear in the Market for the GN, but otherwise we shouldn't have any problems.
See: http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html
On the Atrix 4G (QHD) after the Gingerbread update apps seem to upscale (or whatever) just fine (looks great except the defective color representation by the screen itself); while is was still on Froyo some apps did not upscale properly and had black bars or borders. "Bonsai Blast" was one that had that issue for a while, but later had an update that addressed it.

Hmmm...I wonder if the Atrix 4G is hdpi or xhdpi, its actual density is somewhere in between those two target densities...
Apps will definitely look a bit soft until they update bitmaps as stated above.

I do keep the vector images for the ones I made that way. Many of them were created in photoshop though but in some cases I have a higher res version available.
Apps look fine on a tablet. Honeycomb 3.2 came with a feature that does what the iPad does and allows double pixels.
So when you launch an app not optimized for larger resolutions, a button will pop-up in the taskbar allowing you to change the render mode.
Most non optimised apps work great in higher Res... I've never used the double pixel mode outside of emulators, cause they look the same but run better at a lower res. Everything else I use normal mode.

Easiest way to get 200 DPI on ICS/FD26?

I haven't been experimenting with any of the ICS leaks lately, mostly because earlier seemed incompatible with LCD Density Modder Pro. Now that we're on FD26 is there any simple, straightforward way too get 200 with a functioning Play Store. I'm not a coder so I'd really like to avoid anything involving terminals or editing scripts.

** edit: well now that you guys answered the DPI question, he just needs the working compatible play store.
I'm sure he knows how to change the DP, guys. He is asking if their is a working play store that will show all apps. Try looking up the play store for different DPI's, OP. I've seen them somewhere, forgot where though.
What fonebone is asking is..
How do you switch density on ics (to 200, or whatever)? Everytime I've tried changing the build.prop (either manually or with an app) i get a bootloop on the opening Samsung logo.
[afaik, density hasn't worked on any ics leak, also doesn't work on cm9a3]
What you need for it to work is a modified phone.apk so it won't crash when you boot into the new dpi.
for cm9a3
there is this

You can flash that to enable both hacked phone.apk and tablet services.jar, or you can also just push the phone.apk only.

Sweet, I was on 240 (stock) for a while, found I could lower to 190 without issues, that was nice, but I wanted more.. so I flashed modded phone apks got down to 160 and that was getting better too.. actually, 130+ is nice cause its the UI we are all familiar with on our phones but just smaller in size all around. Well.. I tried the tabletUI and haven't looked back since. Just the look of it being like a tablet on our phones is just sick to me.
So some are saying that the size of everything being so small is what keeps them from using the tUI as their daily, all you need to do is use 'big font' from the market and increase everything to something like 130, you will keep the tUI format but fonts will be easier to read..

Best DPI for Galaxy Note 2

I was wondering what is the best DPI for my Galaxy Note 2, I tried other people's suggestions but it didn't work for me so I was wondering how Google decided on their DPI. Considering they're in charge of Android they must know the optimal level so I used the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 4 as reference:

Ok. I gave you the chance to research, but well... DPI is the pixel density of your screen that can be soft-modded to make your display "look" different. There are many apps that can actually change your DPI. Note 2's DPI is 320 by default. 240 DPI is the best one IMO for this type of screen size.
With all due respect, there are thousands of forums in XDA where this topic is being discussed.

Hmm, I did it through the physical screen and I got 267.02 PPI, so we're still dangerously close to the same number mines just rounded lol, thanks a lot for the input though I really appreciate it :highfive:

With 265 dpi is the phone app all messed up.

With any DPI change the phone app loses proportions but with 270 it's easily passable only thing that changes is the dial pad is smaller and more to the left, but yeah nothing "all messed up" :fingers-crossed:
I suggest you try it though, give it some time and it feels premium
Edit: Oh and if it bothers you leave the phone app how it is, I use the Xposed Framework method so I get to pick what I want changed, very useful look it up
How about any other apps that have problems, I have heard there is a problem with the camera app, with a dpi change and the play store.
Change the system ui with the xposed app settings. Then you won't have to worry about apps messing up. You can choose which apps you want to change.

So if we change the systemui to have the dpi of 270, what resolution shall we change it too, (default).
240 dpi, Nova launcher and icons set at 120 % on Nova settings, Look and feel, icons size .

You don't have to change the resolution if you don't want to. I think that gives you tablet ui. Not sure though.

Looks good thanks, I changed the resolution on the Gmail app too, 1280x800 and got the tablet ui, it looks great.
Nova seems to have a small gap between the top of the screen and the notification bar, that's with the systemui's dpi changed to 270 and Nova changed to 270, is this normal.
