Porting Roms - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

With the SII, there were Threads on how to port Roms from the international to US version. I tried a few and was successful and I'm really not a programmer but willing to learn. Since there appears to be similarity between the Note 8 and 10.1 could a "how to" be developed to do this? Maybe its too hard and too involved, but thought I'd ask.

I cant say this will work for sure, as i dont have the device I cant say. But considering the similarities between devices, this is what you should do:
1. replace usr / vendor / bin / xbin from 8.0 to 10.1 rom
2. replace boot.img
3. logcat alot.

Tried a 10.1 Rom but when I tried to replace the files It wouldn't let me. Got an error code.

Unpack both to seperate folders, replace the stuff, repack as zip. goto CWM and mount system just in case and flash

I ended up doing that. flashed it. Got though the Aroma and booted. Got the boot sound but the screen was black. I didn't do anything to the build prop, would that have a problem? I didn't mount system.
Thanks 9LC2099589165590C

Thankyou for that! im one step closer to getting the note 8.0. Anyways do
Code:
adb logcat > logcat.txt
and send me the output file. From there we can figure out what went wrong.

Sorry not familiar with adb and getting logcat. In reviewing the setup from Aroma I noticed it flashed the 10.1 8010 wifi only kernel. Maybe I have to flash the kernel for the 5110. How do I get the kernel for the 5110?

http://pastelink.me/dl/f69bca here you go. replace boot.img in aroma folders with this.
or package to tar and flash with odin

I had previously replaced the boot image in all the options. I replaced them again and flashed. Same situation, get boot sound but black screen. I have been using this one ROM maybe I'll give another one a try. But will stop for today. Thanks for your help.

Tried another ROM this morning. Started booting but black screen. Been trying to port Note 10.1 Roms. Checking the specs the Note 8.0 looks more like a large Note II. Any Ideas about porting from the Note II to the Note 8.0?

A little more to get you going: 7SV917532E125122K

Its great that we are working to get developers interested in the Note8.0. There are already many custom Roms out for the 10.1 and the Note II.
With the similar Hardware on both these devices I would hope we could find a way of porting some of these Roms to the Note 8.0. This would open up the options to Note 8.0 users dramatically. I have attempted to port but I don't have the skills needed. Can anybody with more knowledge be it the original developer or a more experienced person get behind this effort?

Yeah stock ROMs can be ported easily (after i find all proprietary files for this device). The first one i'll be porting is this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2216311 or the note 10.1 stock ROM

Android 4.3 on Korean Note 2?

Hi guys!
First of all I am sorry for posting in this forum but I believe Korean Note 2 is similar in many aspect to N7105 and also there are devs who can read and maybe come up with something.
I have a question for you. Has anyone tried an Android 4.3 custom ROM on e250s (Korean Note 2) ? I am currently on 4.1.2, a combination of Milan 3.0 and Milan 4.0 (I think this ROMs are also for N7105 because in About device section my phone appears to be a N7105 after flashing), with some stock kernel and cwm. I have tried a few 4.3 ROMs for N7105 (CM 10.2, Beanstalk, Illusion) but all get stuck at the boot logo (Samsung Galaxy Note 2). I even tried different kernels, compatible with 4.3 (SJKernel and NeKo) but again, with no luck.
Do you have a solution, link, idea?
Thanks in advance guys!
Any links?

Yes. My actual ROM is 4.1.2. I have tried Jedi X19 (4.1.2) and also BeanStalk, Illusion, CM 10.2 (4.3), with the same result. Stuck at boot screen logo.

Vibration issue
Hi guys!
Is anyone else having issues with vibrations when using a N7105 ROM (with Android 4.2.2 or 4.3)? I mean the phone does not vibrate at all.
Do you know a fix or something?
Thanks!

Hi. This is the link to the boot converter.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36885456
All you have to do is flash this zip file from cwm after you first flash the ROM.
I have tried Illusion and PAC-MAN ROMs (N7105, Android 4.3) and also MIUI v5 for N7105 (Android 4.2.2) and all work fine.
There may be some ROMs (PAC-MAN) that give you "error 7" when flashing. You have to change the first line from META-INF/com/google/android/update script.
How I do that. I prefer to change the ROMs extension from zip to apk, then unzip it using APK Tool and go to the file, change extention to .txt and delete the first line (the one that starts with assert), thus the first line becoming the one with "show progress" or "mount". After that I zip it again with APK Tool and sign the ROM with ApkSign. I do not know why, I cannot sign it with APK Tool. After that, the flashing process should go fine. You have to install the right GApps for the ROM you are being flashing and then the boot converter from the link.
The only issue I have found was the absence of vibrations, but I managed to get it back by flashing Thor Kernel for Note 2, like cbeta1111 and eggymustdie told me. So huge thanks to them.
Good luck! Hope you will manage to install the desired ROM. In my opinion, PAC-MAN ROM is the best so far, with many, many options from CM, AOKP and Paranoid Android ROMs.

I am using TWRP touch custom recovery. would this process work for TWRP?
I did not get second part about changing first line from META-INF/com/google/android/update script. where is that? You mean first line of custom 4.3/4.2 ROMs we are going to install?
and also do call recoding work in 4.3/4.2 PAC ROMS because i actually use this function and multi windows ?
This is dev forum, not Q&A. All questions should go in questions forum.

Hi. It should definitely work with TWRP recovery as it installs like a normal zip file ROM.
The update script file is located in the ROM. You have to unzip it and go to that location as I have said in the anterior post.
Call recording works but I did not figured yet how to play the file after it is saved. It saves the file as a .3gpp but I think the problem is with Android 4.3 codecs.
EDIT: It works if you try to play it from the built in file manager. Not with Root Explorer. Do not know why.
Multiwindows work great in PAC-MAN ROM:

Errr I did! and they have!!!!!
Doesn't mean I cant voice my opinion (Same as you did) as well as report post!

[Q] N7100 MI6 4.3 Touchwiz Port to N7105(and others) impossible? Insane?

Ok, so I downloaded Dr. Katan's MI6 ROM for the 7100 and with a touch of insanity installed it to my AT&T phone. IT BOOTED RIGHT UP!
All while using the stock 4.3 Kernel that came with it!
Whole ROM runs perfectly, I have WiFi and GPS and everything's great EXCEPT, no cell signal :crying: When I try to look at the APNs it says No Sim Card.
I flashed the AT&T modem again. That changed nothing.
So, I figured I'd follow a port guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40575946
It didn't work. Installs fine, but the phone just won't boot with it. Just sits there and vibrates occasionally with a black screen.
I figured since it's a 4.3 ROM, I should use a 4.3 base, so I used Beanstalk for AT&T (my daily driver, NOT a Touchwiz Rom).
Should I try it with the stock 4.1 Touchwiz ROM as the base? It seems counter-intuitive, but I could be wrong, as this is my first stab at this.
Since just the modem is the issue, is there one part of the porting that I should be paying extra attention to?
Unfortunately while typing this, I just discovered that the S-Pen isn't working either... It detects it's being removed/inserted, but it doesn't work on the screen.
I'm not seeing anything else on this topic other than "WHEN", "WHY NOT ME", and "THIS IS N7100 ONLY, IT'LL BRICK YOUR PHONE DON'T TOUCH IT GET AWAY FROM IT GO BACK TO AT&T"
Obviously it doesn't brick your phone and I don't want to until December if I can help it.
I'm no dev. I'm what could be considered a Script Kiddy at best, but I'll do all I can to make this work.
Any help would be appreciated!!
Strange that there's no actual developers on this... My attempts thus far have failed.

You can stop trying to port and start flashing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2496292, it's officially leaked... That is if you have a AT&T Note 2, which I take it that you do after reading your post.

Any one??? Would there be any other rom I could use for this device? Please help me out.
To my knowledge there are no ROMS because the 10.1 does not share the same architecture with the 8.4 (I am not a developer). That being said, there are multiple devices out there that use the Exynos architecture (http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/Exynos/showcase.html) so I believe it is only a matter of time.

Thanks for the reply! So basically there is no rom because there is a differeynt architecture. Could I possibly flash the Galaxy Tab 2 rom or something like that? See the problem is that many of games lag and the tablet gets warm. Home screen also has lag.

dunno about the 10.1, but I'd donate to have a rom for 12.2 (might be possible to share 10.1 with the 12.2 since they have the same processors?).

You can actually "turn off" some of the pre-installed apps without rooting. Go to Settings --> General --> Application manager.
However, not all of then can be turned off. Most of the "Samsung" apps could be turned off.

I write you here because i have not posting enough to be able to write in the rom section...
I want to thank you, i flash your ROM without problem it was exactly what i need to have a clean install.
I notice 3 points that occurs for me :
1) The google keyboard APK was not in MyFiles folder, so i took it from the net.
2) ROOT was not working, so i root it again by myself
3) When i check i tablet information the kernel seems to be the samsung original one.
Thanks,

I installed the rom after wiping /data /system /dalvik cache /cache. (Selected all except ext-card in Twrp)
Alle went well, but surprise, all my apps were still there.
The system is STATUS SE for Android: Enforcing SFEP-sm-t520-4.4.2_0009. I also have the new kernel which I already had.(cannot check it).
Is this ok?
Thanks for making this rom.

I notice 3 points that occurs for me :
1) The google keyboard APK was not in MyFiles folder, so i took it from the net.
2) ROOT was not working, so i root it again by myself
3) When i check i tablet information the kernel seems to be the samsung original one.
Thanks,

Oh ha ha, looks like I forgot to put the google keyboard apk in there. I'll fix that in an update soon. I'm aware of the root issue (now ). Thanks for reporting the issues. Look for an update soon!
Ok thanks.
And for the kernel is it normal that it does not show cybertronic V5 in information system?

No I don't think that's normal. I'm going to repackage it with the cybertronic kernel. I've got a lot of things to fix so its going to take a bit depending on how much time I get. Thanks for the patience!
ik4evr .... Thanks for all your time and effort to bring a GREAT rom to the SM-T520. We DO appreciate it!

Thanks for your hard work. I will go back to stock with my nandroid backup for the moment because of the permission problems which cause too much inconvenient for me. And I will test your V2 when it will be ready :victory:

[REQUEST] [DEVS] I9195i Port to all S4 Mini Variants

Hi to all the devs.
Sorry to bother and hope its in right section.
Today I learned about the I9195i variant and it is running 4.4.4 android and has a beautiful stock UI.
Will it be able to port to other S4 Mini Variants?
It would be great to know it is possible because it is more or less the same phone
Please see screenshots of phone below.

That would be perfect!! It looks amazing and it is 4.4.4!!
Will try and port it for i9190 today. Lets hope I can get it right!! Wish me good luck!
It would be a great alternative has lollipop with white background
The i9195i is not 'more or less the same' as the i9195/0/2.
The processor is different, if someone does try to port it, it will not be easy.
Good luck to all trying to port it!

I keep getting Status 7 when trying to flash. I have looked at the build prop and all the product ID's look fine. And also there are no "assert" lines in updater script. What can the problem be?

Try another recovery, besides you shouldn't try. You would have to port EVERY singly apk and framework to work with 4.4.2.

Thanks I tried it. Still status 7 error.
"processing symbolic links...."
"symlink: some symlynks failed"
"E:Error in storage/sdcard1/... (status 7)"
"Installation aborted"
Build.prop file is okay, the problem stays in updater script...
Maybe it can help, let's get a try:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2522762
When I was creating(not porting) rom for Galaxy Ace(old times!) the help for me was:
In updater script I marked text from ''assert...'' to first mark(or symbole) '';'' and deleted it. It is possible that there is some lines more, but the text must start from ''mount'' or similiar.
Maybe it can help you, so try and write here in XDA what was the effects!
Good Luck! ''7''
So really, noone is able to crack that little mf open and stuff in a newer, better OS
? Since Samsung so blatantly ignores their own device...

new developer, help please.

Thank you for your time.
First of all I have been rooting and unlocking many android devices and variants for years now. I have had some amazing success at it as I am pretty good at reading and following directions. I have decompiled and made some small mods to different roms, edited build.prop files. I am well versed in adb and fastboot commands as well as using odin and heimdall. i know how to record and read logcats.
That said I have a bootloader unlocked dev edition vzw s5, and would like to try my hand at fully porting a rom. Specifically from a GSM s5 to Verizon CDMA. Once I get it functional on MY device i would then like to mod it to be safestrap flashable for those that dont have dev edition verizon s5's. I should also mention i have the dev's blessing to do this and if i share it i will make sure first and foremost to give the original dev credit.
The problem is all the guides i find, even on here, seem to be outdated and dont quite work all the way. So if someone could point me to a good CURRENT (android 5.0 and up) guide for this or maybe guide me a little through the process, I would be eternally gratefull and would include whoever helps (and there donation links) in the credits if i share the finished rom.
Again thank you in advance for your time and consideration, if it weren't for the community here at xda the entire android world would be a much more different and boring place.
I am looking to bring the maverick s6 v4.5 to the Verizon s5. It is already available for every other variant

Hi there, i was wondering, a re e you gonna release that rom if you got it working? And could you share your process on converting the radio stuff? Ive been looking into doing the same with my sprint galaxy s5 (uses same technology to connect to the cell towers) but have been in the same situation as you. Thanks.

Are familiar with decompiling and rebuilding apks, modding the build.prop, framework-res and rebuilding roms?

Yes to everything ecxpet for the building apks part lol. Yeah feel free to write out a how to guide on doing it, because there are probably people out there who would love that, including me! And i think there might also be someone who will create a script thatll do it automatically, Depending on what the process is.
