Hi guys, anyone could recommend a good car charger for this HTC One. I am running an app called Autoguard which records my trip. I manually activate car mode and this app but I realised my current car charger is not able to charge the phone quick enough despite a 2A rating with BT and this app running. It drains about 10% on a half hour journey! I have also did a little mod on my USB cable to short pin 2 & 3 but don't seems to work. I also read about charging modes (AC or USB) which the latter charged slowing whereas AC gives the full charging potential. I confirmed my current charger charged in USB mode. Any thoughts?

It works for me and does a great job.. I've had it for quite some time. My Galaxy Nexus on Verizon while using LTE was using more output than input while I was charging with a no name charger before so I decided to give this a shot and it worked. It charged and the percentage went up instead of trickling slowly with the no name charger..

But what would make the difference between charging the One ore not while navigating?
I have a mini charger with an output of 1A, but still the phone in draining while navigating. Could this be the same issue as with the Galaxy S2, that it depends on the usb pin layout whether the phone charges with 500mA or 1A? And if so, isn't there a usb cable which already has the correct pin layout to charge to phone with 1A?

The One doesn't seem to change charging rates based on the USB pin layout-- I have several chargers and cables with shorted data cables and none of them seem to charge the device at higher than 500ma. It's definitely the phone itself that's not drawing more. I think that, either via software or hardware, the phone is checking the wattage available and if it is below 5Vdc/2A, it only draws 500ma. I just ordered a DC adapter that claims to be rated at 5Vdc/2A, and it should be delivered tomorrow.
Well in my car the charger is a 2.1A charger so that should not be the problem.
Not shure what the voltage output is.
I shortened the middle pins, but indeed, without succes.
Where did you order your charger? Can you let me know if it's working? If the phone sees it as a AC charger?

If this one doesn't work, I'm just going to permanently mount a 150W inverter and start using AC adapters. All of the 2.1a adapters show as charging via AC, but it still tops out at 500ma.

I really think it's just down to output wattage, and nothing more. I have plenty of chargers with the middle pins shorted, and even though the phone says it's charging on AC, it only draws 500ma. That charger I linked my last post has been actually charging my phone while it's in use, pretty nearly 100% of the time. It does dip from time to time, but I've noticed that the AC adapter does too.
Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I've seen some conflicting posts. Should I be getting a 2a car charger? I'm not sure what my current one is rated at as I haven't checked, but today in car mode and with bluetooth connected it was draining instead of charging and I'd like to fix that. I need a 2 usb port charger and I know most of those are not actually 2a per port, any suggestions? Is 2a what I need?

Unless you're using custom kernels, I believe the htc one is limited to 1a charging

I've used this exact same charger for some time now w/o issue on several phone types. I bought it based off it's many positive reviews and it has lived up to it's reputation.
I got my HTC One car kit,by HTC,its just perfect ,its made just like htc one- awesome build quality .Brings on car mode automatically just by sliding in the One.:good:

I'd bet the Captivate will only see it as USB port and never draw more than 500mA from it. You can check which mode your phone is charging in the settings.

Settings->About Phone->Battery status (first one on the list... when plugged in to the AC adapter that came with the phone it will say Charing (AC) under it)
I got a $3 AC car charger ("For blackberry" but thy're both just microusb) off dealextreme. The connector is a little tight but it works great and charges fast
I've found that my Zune HD FM Transmitter charges well too. Has a USB port on it. Not a cheap alternative, but it's multi-functional and it works. Think the Captivate recognizes anything to charge as long as it gives power...
I'm sure it will charge, but at only 500mA, will be pretty slow (especially if you're using while charging).
I use an old crackberry charger (has usb port on it). 500mA output. Charges phone fine. Just not as fast as the samsung 700ma charger.

I haven't tried the car charger, but the AC outlet->USB works great
I purchased the $1.16 car charger from Monoprice.com, and it works great. Unfortunately, board rules don't allow me to post a link. Just search for "car charger" on Monoprice, and it's the first one that comes up. Or, search for the product ID: 3523.
The only problem is that, while the label lists a maximum output of 1A, the Captivate only draws 500 mA from it (USB mode), as is the case with the other chargers listed in this thread. I have not found the lower charging current to be a problem.
For $1.16... It's a steal.
I also purchased two micro USB cables from the same site, the ones with ferrites, but I had to mod the plastic heads with a Dremel to get them to fit the angled port opening. They fit and work perfectly now, though.
Even with the stock 700ma wall charger, it takes almost 4 hours to completely charge the battery. A 500ma charger (most iPhone ones and generic USB ones) will take even longer. This of course assumes you're not using the phone for anything. If you're using the phone for navigation, for example, your 500ma charger will not have enough juice for the phone and the battery level will continue to drop. So, it is important to have the car charger that can supply more than 500ma to the phone.
Currently, I know the Zune HD premium car charger can be recognizd as AC charger and seems supply more than 700ma of juice. And I read some Moto mini-USB car charger (no USB port on the charger) can be used as rapid charger as well.
I've tried two different cheap USB port car charger, one labeled 2.1a and the other is 700ma. Both are designed for iPhone/iPod and hence can only be recognized as USB charger.
If anyone found any small USB port car charger that can be recognized by the phone as AC charger, please post here.
I've heard good things about the Scosche Revive charger. I saw it in a car charger thread on the Android Forums. A guy bought it for his Evo and said it charged nicely with everything running (GPS, 4G, Navigation, et cetera). Here's a link to his post reviewing it. There's also the Revive II which has a 2.1A port and a 1A port.

Thanks for the link. The big question is: Can Captivate regconize it as rapid charger instead of USB? Just because it works with Evo (HTC phone) doesn't mean it will work the same for Captivate. And I suspect the Revive II won't work well for Captivate at all because it is designed for iPhone/iPad.

I can't say how it'll work with the Captivate, but they were having the same problem with their phones (700mA chargers only outputting 500mA). So, I'd have to say there is a good chance it would work. I'd test it out myself, but I really don't need a car charger. My work commute is 10 minutes round trip, school is 20 minutes.
Anyone come across a good combination charger/mp3 adapter?

This post will show you how to MOD an un-official Samsung USB wall charger into one that will enable full speed charging on Samsung Galaxy S phones.

Samsung wall USB charger is only 750mA! AND it will set AC mode.
The theory behind it is with samsung galaxy phones and "official chargers":
if the middle 2 data pins on the usb, while getting 5v to the outer 2 pins it tells the phone that it is an *official samsung* charger and enables full speed charging.
without the middle 2 pins connected (with or without data flow) will not charge at full speed. even if you supply 800mA it will only charge around 350mA
well there have been posts of cable hacks to do this or adapters... ha! tape and tinfoil... or hack the cable apart! And you cant use the cable with the PC anymore!
heres my mod... bend 2 pins.. DONE! solder if you know how for better connection!
***only use this charger for samsung phones, not all USB devices will like this, -may dammage some- as the samsung phone is PROGRAMMED to know what to do if the 2 data pins are shorted out***

update on this mod..
was able to charge my extended battery from 8% to 100% in about 2 hours 45 min over USB with the screen off never timed before the mod but it was slower. In the official samsung charger it was a little over 3 hours. just in the battery cradle it takes around 5-6 hours. Very much improved!

my old iPhone USB cable is capable of supplying up to 1A. it may be worth it to modify a cable, glue it in so it's no longer repurposable, and use the old iPhone wall adapter.
When I plug my old Blackberry charger into the phone, it shows "Charging (AC)" under the Status menu, is this saying that the Blackberry charger is putting the Cappy into full charge mode? Unfortunatly the charger does only say only 700mA output anyway.

More accurately, it means the phone will try to charge at full speed. I have an external battery that has the pins shorted, phone says AC, but it can only output 500ma, so it doesn't charge any faster.

MORE accurately (as said before) it WILL charge at full speed, OF THE CHARGER.. not the phone. UPTO the full speed of the phone.
thats why i said my charger upped it to 800 not 1100ish in the first post. and why i told the other guy his is working at 700. it depends on the chargers output, that has been explained thank you.
and your charger that is putting out 500ma IS FASTER. without the mod your phone is only charging at "usb speed" or around 375ma ish... just barely faster...
+1 on the BB charger, my Cappy didn't come with a charger and I always had it plugged to that BB charger, I'm used to measure the battery charging time of my old Dell Streak on a "desktop charger" and took about 4 hours, this cappy charges in 2 hours and something, maybe 3 haven't measured accurately but I know it is waay quicker than 4 hours.

yes the blue light is normal. the pins you connect inside dont connect to anything in the charger, they are just connected to themselves.

The light is the indicator for if you charge the battery in the battery bay.
Am I right?
the light indicates power:
Blue for plugged in empty, or fully charged (battery or USB)
Pink if anything is drawing power (charging through battery or USB)
Purple if you have a battery and USB drawing power (over-drawing power!! disconnect one)

Nice mod. I bought of these with two after market batteries for $10. What do you think about wiring the battery contacts to a switch to the usb port to use the backup battery/charger as a portable charger? That way, you can go from charging the battery to using the battery aa portable charger?

i barely understand what you are trying to say, however, the battery contacts on the charger are only 350mah , the usb port on the CHARGER is 800, so wiring the battery contacts on the charger (with or without a switch) would be a bad choice.

What is the effect of using different rated charging on the Epic. Would the .85 Amp charger charge faster? Or too fast and cause damage?

USB operates at 5V, and any charger with a USB "type A" receptacle will output at 5V. Furthermore, it's safe to use the Epic with any USB-based charger.
Now, the problem is that the Epic will not draw more than 0.5 A from a USB port that isn't wired to the USB Battery Charging specification, so using a charger with a higher current rating will not charge faster if it doesn't meet that specification. Many chargers do, however, Apple uses an incompatible specification, so any iPhone/iPod-compatible, high current charger is of limited use on the Epic.
I've found that when you plug the Epic in, if the LED turns red and there's no "Select USB mode" menu, then the charger is properly compatible. If you do get a "Select USB mode" menu, then current draw is limited to 0.5 A and it will charge more slowly.

The Epic itself appears to max out around 0.7 A, so the 0.85 A charger is unlikely to charge appreciably faster than the Samsung OEM charger. Assuming it follows the USB Battery Charging spec, it shouldn't be any slower either.

The charge current is actually phone dependent--the phone itself will never draw too much current and cause damage to the phone. Furthermore, the USB Battery Charging spec requires that phones (and other USB devices) implement sensing circuity to avoid overloading a charger.
In short, one of the design goals of USB is that, if you can physically plug a device into a receptacle, then it should do something reasonble, if not optimal, and never cause damage.
Yeah I've used my 1A chargers from my old Hero and they don't seem to charge any faster, nor overheat the battery than any extra than the standard charger.
Charging off USB sucks though (from a computer) 500mA is noticably slower than 700mA. I wish there was an app or mod to allow it to draw 700mA from a computer's USB port. I know USB 3.0 is safely able to supply 900mA so I'm curious if the device is configured to allow this. (unfortunately I do not currently have any computer with USB 3.0 but it's still something I'm interested in)
My old HTC TouchPro had a mod to allow full speed (I guess 1A charging) from the 5V port on my laptop and desktop. It never hurt my usb controller on either of them and they still work fine to this day. I swear I heard that USB 2.0 can unofficially support 900mA as well, which explains why my ports never burnt out from my TouchPro's added load

No problems here using the 2A nook charger, 1A iphone charger or 700mA blackberry charger. As long as the charger is 700mA or better it'll fast charge. No such thing as too much amperage, the device will only draw what it needs. In the case of 500 mA, it'll slow charge. Any less than that and it's hit and miss, but probably won't charge at all.

Interesting.... tried the nook color charger and it doesn't fit. Looks kinda the same, but it's not. NC people said that device would not charge from computer USB.

If you have a device that only pulls .8 amps and you hook it up to a 2 amp charger....guess how many amps it is going to pull? You guessed .8 amps. Woohoo!

I use the nook power brick with a standard microusb cable - like the stock epic one or a crackberry cable. The nook cable is different, but the USB port on the charger itself is standard.
And yes, the nook won't charge off of a PC. PC USB ports only deliver 500mA and the nook wants more.
Can the GT 10.1 plug into any USB car charger?

I've noticed that plugging into various USB wall chargers won't work. The only one that will work is the one that came with the tab. I am pretty sure this is because the Samsung one is a 2amp charger and all of my others are less than 1amp, 850mah specifically. If you can find a 2amp car charger then it should work fine. Otherwise, the charging indicator will show that it's connected to a charger but will have a red x on in it meaning that it's not charging or can't charge. I suppose anything too low can't charge the battery fast enough to make up for the battery drain
i bought a $10 2 port charger from amazon for the ipad/galaxy tab 7". it works fine for both tablets and the gt10.1.

I bought this one from deal extreme. Its less than $3.95 with free shipping. Comes with 2 usb ports. I have been charging my iPad and Dell Streak tablet without any problem. Yes it does charge 2 devices at same time. Its also small, doesn't get hot, doesn't make any noise and looks good. Highly recommended.

it's. still charging. you can get a trickle charge even from standard USB. s3ms that this is one of the only tegra2 tablets that can.
I heard that the trnaformer can but mine doesn't. it should work if I had USB.3.0.

So if l'm using it to watch videos and music while on wifi, do you think that it'll maintain its charge while trickle charging?

i don't think the amount coming in will equal the amount discharged. depends on the brightness of the screen and how much cpu you're using. mine was charging veeeerrry slowly while reading the steps to root and the screen on, other than that it was idle and still slowly charged.

I also bought this. Arrived in 3 weeks from China, but free shipping, or $0.01.
They seem very good. There is some hard to read text (even in English) on the plastic part that tells you the top port is for iPad (2.1A) and the bottom is for others (1A). I've put a photo below of the guts. Seems it's definitely more than just some cheap resistors and a fuse.
I tried it in my vehicle and you still get the red X with a OEM cable with the device powered on, but NOT if you use an adapter plug found on eBay.
Do yourself a favor and order 3-4 of each. =)

Nope - you need a 2A charger, but any old 2A charger won't do. Most are designed for the iPad, which uses resistive voltage dividers in the charger to signal the presence of a dumb charger. Specifically the iPad looks for 2.0 volts on one of the data pins and 2.8 on the other.
The Tab expects D+ and D- to be shorted together and somewhere around 1.2-1.24 volts.
It IS possible to make iPad chargers (confirmed on Scosche reVIVE II) work as follows:
Bridge D+ and D- with a solder blob.
Remove the resistor that was the upper part of the 2.8v voltage divider (i.e. between the data pin and +5v).
At this point the charger should output around 1.2 volts on D+ and D-.
I have tried several car charging adapters that plug into the cigarette lighter port in a car and none of the ones I have charge the Moto X. Really weird, all of them charge an HTC One X, Nexus 7, but for some reason, will not charge the Moto X.
Can anyone recommend car charging adapters that they know work?

Strange. My old charger works fine. But... I just got an a/c adapter for the car... So my phone charges quicker now with the a/c charger rather than the car charger.

Im currently using the 2 year old Car charger I purchased for my Galaxy nexus. Works great, I find it weird that your charger works on all the other devices but not the X, they all use an industry standard port... No reason for it not to work.

Car chargers can put out 500ma to 1500ma depending on the quality and brand. thus the difference between the two you have.

usb 2.0 cables are an industry standard. The usb cable will not improve charging output, just like the usb ports on your computer, if the phone detects its just not charging but also has data capabilities (even though they might not work) it will limit the power output (usually to 500ma)
Hence you see the option on some kernels for USB quick charging

Ok I may have misspoke when I said high speed USB cable but not all USB cables are built the same. USB cables have both data and charging pins; disabling the data pins essentially forces the device and port to charge. This is why I suggested looking into using a charge-only cable with the data pins disabled in the event the moto x and USB port are acting as only a media device for data.

The Verizon car charger without the extra USB port works great. I got 2 - one directly from Verizon for $30 and one from Amazon for less than 1/2 the price. They both work the same.
This is the one I am referring to, it has a coiled cord that is not shown in the picture below:
I also have the Motorola car charger that someone else posted a pic of earlier in the thread. It charges just as fast as the Verizon one, but when I shut my car off, the blue light stays on so I have to pull it out of the cigarette lighter every time I get out of the car for fear of battery drain. The light on the Verizon one goes out when I shut off my car so I can leave it plugged in. For this reason, I prefer the Verizon car charger.

I know what you are saying since it is an LED, but I just can't leave it plugged in with that light on. Too OCD I guess. Even if my brain tells me it will be fine, I just can't do it.
