[Q] Will I receive t-mobile 4.1.2 update? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I am curious if I will receive the new S3 update, as I am rooted on stock rom. I have not received any update notifications yet, but I know other people that have. Pressing "software update" in settings just waits saying "Checking for software updates". What do I need to do to get the update?

If you are rooted, my guess is that you most likely tripped the modified counter. By default if you are not using a work around, Samsung has certain methods in place that detect when you modifiy your phone or boot loader. Once tripped, you will most likely not get any ota updates. To check, first ensure that you dont have a yellow exclamation mark while your phone is booting, second, go to settings about phone and there is a string that she either read normal or modified. If you are rooted though, why dont you just flash one of the new roms with android 4.1.2? That is the update.

Forget waiting for the OTA update, why not download the full Samsung T999 S3 stock-rooted
deoxidized firmware and flash your phone with it. Since your phone is already rooted, it's easy.
Good Luck!

Yes, it appears I am modified. I used triangle away in the past. I havn't done any phone mods in a long time, and I basically have root for apps requiring SU. I did not want to have to break out the USB cable and download a 700MB file if I could just run the update tool (call me lazy).

Right, I went ahead and updated using cwm and the stock rom and am now on 4.1.2. Flashing was just scary to me when I havnt done it in a very long time

If you wish to do it the easy way I'd say TWRP it. But another way is Odin back to complete stock UVDLJC so that your status is normal and not modified. I'm pretty sure TriangleAway doesn't need to be used to reset your binary for an OTA. Just the ROM itself can't be detected as modified for the OTA to work.

If you don't mind me asking, how exactly did you go about that? I was on CM, tried changing the rom, messed up, ended going to my backup of touchwiz 4.1.1 and don't mind it but I'd like to go to 4.1.2. I'm a noob at this so if you can help me out that would be awesome. Thank you.

Go to my firmware thread stickied in development. You will find firmware and instruction there.

ROOTED - Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available.?

[Have seen this in other forums but wasn't sure if the solutions there applied to the S4]
Anyways, the only thing I've done on my S4 is 1) sim-unlock the device via (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2282683) and 2) root the device via KIES.
I have not installed any custom firmware or whatnot, I've only done the above 2. When I try to hit System Update, I get the message "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available."
I even ran Triangle Away to bring my counter back down to 0 (even if I didn't install any custom firmware) and I'm still getting this error. Does anyone have any solutions?
Should I unroot the device and will that bring it back to normal?
Thanks in advance!
It's because you rooted your phone

Just flash a new ROM. As software updates become available the devs will base ROMs off of the latest update.

I got the same message. I removed root and tried to update and got the same thing. I was wondering if a factory reset would restore my updates.

Try using Triangle-Away.
In triangle away there is an option to disable root for a minute or so when booting, this will have the stock rom think its not rooted, enabling software updates.
same issue
I had the same issue. I had rooted my phone and got that message when trying to update OTA.
I really wanted the ability to put apps on the sd card from the phone itself and not have to use some fancy app to do it for me and make symbolic links (Linux stuff)
What I did was goto settings-accounts-backup and reset- and selected factory data reset.
This completely returns your phone to stock like it came out of the box. afterward I didn't get the message but I kept getting server communication errors so I connected my phone through usb to kies and it is doing the firmware upgrade as I type and OMFG is it the slowest ****ing thing I have ever had the misfortune to do. Its been on for about 3 hours and its only at 42%
And strangely my phone is still completely usable while this is going on.
Wait, is the update available for the T-Mobile devices now?

I've just rooted my phone a few days ago, and removed some Sumsang and t-mobile bloatware, and that message appeared.
Thanks in advance.
Anyone of us will be answer. Soon as an update is released. But in order to get an update, you MUST be completely stock, down to the bloatware.

Hello brother, I guess there is some misunderstanding regarding device model. My question is for my samsung note 10.1 GT-N8000 . Should I follow the same steps to get back my original system ? Please suggest. Thanks.
Seems like you should be asking this question in right forum then.
Im having the same issue after using triangle away. Everything says official and flash count is at 0. Any ideas? Also, with flash count set at 0 and everything listed as official, does this mean i will be ok for warranty? Im having an issue with my touchscreen working and the Tmobile place had to send me a new phone
Edit: Done a factory reset after using triangle away and i got the "Your device is up to date." Message. Still somewhat worried about warranty though.

- Upgrades the camera firmware.

The OTA will fail to update if you're rooted.
I had to Odin back to stock and then apply the OTA update.
So yes, the update will break root.
I haven't tried to root it since, so I can't report any progress there.

It failed because it said your device is modified and prevent you from updating or it failed in the middle of updating?
tmobile needs to speed up this apps to sd update.....
I love how they are trying to hide the space the system uses under miscellaneous. This might trick people into not complaining about having more available disk space. I've heard good things about this update... Just want it already.
Still lovin' Tmo more than Sprint!!! 15-26mb beats 100k all day long. And I enjoy being able turn the camera sound off without rooting.

T-Mobile is usually quick to send out updates, I wonder why it's taking them long to release this one? The S3 got the JB update pretty quick if I'm not mistaken.

you can blame me for the update not being released and it wont be released for months, according to my sources. I talked to t mobile about all the bugs they have, so they said fine, we will do everything never to give bugs again, hence a long update period...It was probably my phone calls that lead to this wait

You son of a ..... ;__; :crying:
I realize it's always an agonizing wait to get your hands on the newest firmware. However, there's a bright side to it. You all are still able to root and tinker with your devices.
I haven't been able to root the newest firmware using motochopper and am hesitant to try CF-Autoroot because in the case it does trip the flash counter and I loose root, I won't be able to reset it.
So, by the time tmobile sends out the update, there hopefully is a way to root.

Thanks for that tip. However, I doubt it would've worked because since I was rooted, the update failed to complete installing around 25%. So, I had to odin back to stock and then apply the OTA. Probably something to do with a locked bootloader.

Yeah, the phone status was 'Official'. You'd have to be in order to get OTA updates/notifications.
Initially upon rooting, the status changed to 'Custom', But I followed the guide below to revert it to 'Official' while retaining root.

[Q] Cannot update my i747

Hello all,
I had my s3 rooted, and unlocked with stock ROM. And I think I've also freeze my "AT&T Software Update" a while ago, so it was stuck on 4.1.1. Now, I would like to update my firmware to 4.3 or newer, and stay stock. I tried to go to the setting and select Software update, but nothing happen. I've also tried to find that "AT&T Software Update" in Titanium Pro, but have no result. Can anyone point me to the right direction on how I can do it?
Thanks
You can't update if you're rooted
So in order to update you need to unroot or just download the 4.3 firmware and flash thru Odin

Thanks Larry. That's a really helpful information. One question though, if I do these manual update, am I expecting all data will be gone? Or will it simply update the firmware, and leave everything alone?
Thanks again
Updating to a stock 4.3 ROM will install Knox too. Rooting will trip the Knox counter. If you have no warranty on your phone, this will not be a problem.
lo
You should also know that Knox can sometimes interfere with obtaining root. Once you're on a 4.3 bootloader, you cannot downgrade the bootloader.

I should have mentioned that earlier. Yes, updating can affect all your data so I would advise you first back up your data. You can install Samsung Kies on your phone and use this to back up your data, apps and everything else you want and restore afterwards. Please see also Audit's post. Updating to the latest firmware which is 4.3 could be a one-way trip and will install Knox security on your phone. The update will unroot your phone, restore to factory settings and install stock recovery. If you decide to re-root afterwards, however, there are several ways of doing this.

4.4.2 OTA trouble?

Hey all,
I caught wind of the 4.4.2 update, so I decided to see how it is. I had used saferoot to gain root access to it, but all I did was use Xposed to modify my phone. No recoveries or anything, and the warranty bit is 0 on the download mode screen. Just to be safe, I wiped data/factory reset to make sure everything was gone, then I started the OTA download. All goes as it should until it reboots to install it, where it gets stuck at 25%, then says "update failed". Phone reboots, and then a window pops up saying the update was interrupted. Anyone else having this issue? Anyone know any workarounds? Because if this phone just won't update, there it no reason for my to keep my warranty bit, since I have less than a week on the warranty left anyhow.

It's kinda odd that it still fails after so many downloads (and so close to being complete).
If there's only a week left to your warranty, you can start looking at custom ROM you might like (AOSP or TW). By the time you find one you really like and understand how to flash it (without any issue), you will have time to give the OTA another shot. Will be some good knowledge reading in the meantime
Little advice: Don't flash a custom ROM while annoyed/mad. That's how 80% of bricks happen.

Yea when you modify the system at all it trips the modified flag and that's probably where its failing (not the warranty bit flag that's at 0 but the one that's in the system itself) try to Odin to full stock and try it again this should revert it back to official

I never tried it on 4.3, only on 4.1.2. Since you have Knox, rooting and installing SU may trip the knox counter. Did you try uninstalling Xposed and running the update?

Well that's just great. I'm stuck on 4.3. Could I possibly flash something like CM11 to get to kitkat? Of course, I'd like to back up the stock rom in case something goes wrong, but it would be wonderful if I could use CM on my phone again! I used the saferoot method to gain root access in the first place, which disabled KNOX if that means anything.

You will loose Root. After Update Baseband Ver. I747UCFUFNJ1, Kernel 3.4.0-1514807 Wed Oct 1, Build Number KOT49H.I747UCUFNJ1 Still 4.4.2 Android
weird. I wonder what they changed. 69MB is pretty small. security patches? POODLE fix perhaps?
How odd as I'm not getting an update notification, but then again I don't want it. All it is is some more bloat and a new kernel. Probably a kernel that has been patched for towelroot. The update may also lock the bootloader, I wouldn't put it past at&t if it did.
Restore to NE4
Can you restore or downgrade to the NE4? When I got my S3 it came with the new update and towelroot doesn't support it.
I also don't want to take a risk of getting knox tripped if I do try to go to NE4.

Don't install it. I installed on my S3 which is rooted and now it won't boot past the Samsung logo screen. Just goes to a black screen.

Mine fails to install and gets stuck in an update loop. I haven't figured out how to break out of it yet.
EDIT: Managed to get it all sorted out. I was still on i747UCALEM when I got an OTA prompt today. Something happened and it got stuck in an update loop. It was probably failing to install, then failing to rollback. I couldn't get it to flash any of the older roms anymore, when I finally realized I might have partially updated to 4.3+. I was able to install the MJB rom and it booted, but it said "Baseband Unknown". Using adb, I managed to figure out that the OTA had partially installed an I747UCUFNE4 modem. I say partially because I had tried an NE4 rom after the MJB rom and it also failed to identify the baseband. However, getprop ro.bootloader was returning "I747UCUFNE4".
I flashed TWRP back on my device, flashed an NE4 modem properly, and flashed an NE4 rom. This time it found the baseband and everything seems to be working for me. I have no clue if my bootloader is correct, but I'm done for now.
So it's not safe to update with root? I used towelroot and have a clockwork recovery.

No it will put your phone back to Stock, No Root and Stock Recovery.
I updated and my phone is fine, but I don't have root anymore. I used CF-AutoRoot originally, and then I used TowelRoot after the last update. Neither work anymore on the 4.4.2 NJ1 version, so I'm not sure if there is any "easy" way to get root back. I don't really know what the pitfalls involved with TWRP and all the more-involved things.

Dang. Guess I'll have to wait till a new root becomes available
I had 2 that were completely stock, both failed and got stuck
in the att boot logo updating then fail loop. No recovery menu
no options. These has stock bootloaders and were not rooted.
So be warned

Same here. No Root. Was on 4.4.2 from this summer. All I did was accept the update, watched it download the 69MB and then let it do its thing. Reboots, says installing, moves to updating then then fails at 95%. Will do this over and over again until I pull battery. Cannot get to recovery, too. I am pissed, since all I did was respond to AT&T's request to update. Otherwise, the phone was perfectly fine. Now I have no use of my phone.
Please post back with solutions.

Once updated, all attempts to revert back to NE4 result in a brick.

Have any of you tried this to update?

RSI Repair (Samsung authorized service center) Couldnt repair it.
Samsung blamed AT&T and AT&T blamed Samsung. Turned them in as claims to mobile insurance. Galaxy S3 no longer stocked so Mobile insurance gave me 2 Galaxy Alpha's

LOL...typical. Neither one takes responsibility. From my understanding of the way the process works with these updates, it would be AT&T at fault since they have to "test and approve" any updates given by Samsung. Of course they will never admit to being at fault.
How can I disable OTA Update? Also anyone else have play store download a ota security policy?

I have used TiBu in the past to stop updates by freezing the software update function in stock based ROM.

I used an app from the Play Store called "My Backup Root" to freeze the update. You can also freeze the security policy updates which is a part of KNOX and/or SELinux I gander.

My Backup Root is a free app on Google Play Store. Always good to have Titanium Backup Pro though, as it lets you backup all your apps and pretty much anything on the software side of your phone.
