Confused -- AT&T Ion - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

Hi
I picked up a newn AT&T Ion on Craigslist for $75. A real nice device. I am pleasantly surprised. Perfect size and very smooth with ICS.
I've looked around and initially thought it couldn't be rooted; however I've seen a couple of threads contradicting that.
Can someone tell me if I can root?
Thanks

You can root with Eroot (search) but you cannot unlock the bootloader.

Unlocking is needed to load custom kernels then?

Exactly.
Therefore, you can only flash custom ROMs that is based on stock ROM.

Is that any rom in the ion section? If not then how do i tell which custom roms based on stock i can flash? Thanks

1. No custom kernel for locked bl.
2. Usually the ROM thread will tell you if this ROM is based on stock ROM or CM or AOSP or whatever.
Most stock-based ROMs are locked bl friendly unless otherwise stated.

[Q] R800X Update

I have an Xperia Play R800X Locked bootloader. I saw on wotanserver that there was another firmware version available for my R800x that ends in .88. My current firmware ends in .89 and is 2.3.2 Is .88 2.3.3? What do I get by updating to 2.3.3 if that is what is is (PSN?)? Do i need to unlock bootloader to use wotan. I also have removed much of the bloatware, and added CWM recovery.
P.S.: To all developers; Any word on 4.0 ICS for the CDMA R800X? I (and many other R800X users) am willing to make a nice donation to the first developer to crack it.
Thanks, Zach
Yes, I think .88 is the latest R800x firmware (2.3.3). No, you don't need to be unlocked to use Wotanserver and you can update with it regardless of deleted apps (it re-installs them when it updates). I think it's mainly a bugfix/stability update or something. Pretty sure you'll have to re-install CWM too

I thought miui was scrapped and ics was only for GSM at the moment. I have a r800x cdma. If I am wrong, could you throw me links for these? Thanks

However, the MIUI version does not yet support CDMA, so far as I can tell.

not yet, so far my guess is that the Phone.apk for MIUI doesn't like the build.prop, I need to look into it more...

Unlock

Is anyone working on no code or nv read unlock on the sim?
Yeah, I'm not sure about that but I have a related question. I unlocked my phone today on the stock rooted ICS rom. I'm wondering if the unlock will persist if I flash darkside v7 or if I will have any issues using my phone in europe after flashing a custom rom
EDIT: I actually also remember seeing a dev only unlock thread in the android development section so you might wanna check that out.

[Q] Bootloader unlocked?

I can't find any statements about the bootloader being locked or unlocked on Sprint, only that Verizon's is locked. Does anyone know for sure? I don't want to get stuck on a phone I can't modify.

Well sprint hasn't done it, and for sure Samsung doesn't do it, so I'm gonna go ahead and say no its not locked. Verizon is a **** that way.
There is already root for this device. Check the original development thread
Sent from my SPH-L900
Root and bootloader unlock are two different things. I havn't check the dev section but from what I heard the root was for the pre-release ROM, since then Sprint have change the firmware and the current root method doesn't work.
As far as the bootlocker concern, getting bootloader unlock means you can install custom ROM which have different kernel. Say you want a custom rom with Android 4.2 earlier than Sprint release or stuff like cifs module or overclock and etc, then you would need bootloader to be unlocked on the phone.
boot load is unlocked and root is for todays release. chain and i worked on it all night for yas.

Exynos source?
Does the Note 2 have the Exynos source out? Aka do developers have full access to the Exynos processor?
Or will there be problems for custom roms? (I heard without the source custom roms would be buggy or not full featured)

Why aren't there many r800x gaming roms?

All I've seen are jellybean and ics roms that I really don't want. I want service on my phone but don't want jellybean/ics because of it's performance compared to gb. Any good r800x gaming roms?
To answer your question. I have tried several roms both on the Verizon model and my current GSM model. Stock debliated with no v6 supercharger or scripts gains you the best performance. Especially on Verizon's as it was stock based firmware. I believe I still have my old nandroid backup laying around. Stock debloated 2.3.3. Do not get 2.3.4. VZ broke the Google sync and it was never fixed
Because 99% of the devs didn't have an r800x. And as Sony only released ICS as a beta for GSM it was never successfully ported to Verizon's model.
I owned an R800x before getting a GSM model.

Edit - This should be a stock debloated 2.3.3 for VZ with root.

It's a nandroid backup. Put it on your phone and boot into cwm and restore it like its a back up. You have to be on 2.3.3 first.

[Q] Which version of kernel to use?

Im running Slim Bean for the Tmobile S3 version 4.3.1 - version Slim-4.3.build.2-OFFICIAL-1349 and I wanted to know what version of Lean Kernel I should use, along with what Governor/IO. I did a search and found the Slimbean thread to be closed.
Search for the ASOP 4.3 version of that kernel in their thread for ur model

I honestly have not seen it in our forums, search for it and if its not here then it does not support it, do NOT try to flash it in this case.. It could have been a T-Mobile S3 for another country, not the U.S. variant

Each kernel is different so I don't know. Personally I just used stock on demand and runs great for me. A balance between performance and battery life.. I don't like to sacrifice performance
