ZL's fate - Sony Xperia ZL

Is ZL's fate going to be ended up like xperia ion? I see similar patterns in sony's way of working, Xperia S and Xperia ion, ion gets neglected. Now Z and ZL, ZL gets updates slower the Z. I thought both of them got .307 firmware certified together? Btw, xperia ion's screen contast is better the xperia S, similarity ZL's screen is better then Z!! Wth..

This is not the end of ZL yet...
mybe because Z is more popular than ZL..
thats why sony gives more to Z than ZL..

Hopefully, how i hope the .307 upgrade will give me the colours of Xperia ion. lol

Damn what a bunch of crying babies around!!!!!! Jesuschrist!!
Everyday I see a new post about Sony updates and ****.. Why didn't you buy a SG4 an HTC or something different? For real. The past years I have been rolling Samsung and it was the same story... Now since I've got my ZL I've received 2 updates in less than 2 months... What else you want.? Seriously guys stop this trolling and get yourself a nexus if you are looking for constant updates... No hard feelings for real..

While I agree with your message, I would have posted it in a slightly nicer tone. Sony has been great with updates, so far. They're fixing issues and improving upon current features. What else can you ask for? These updates are FREE, we paid for the phone as is and that is for any phone you buy.

we probably have here one type of firmware update addiction by some of the participants of forum Seriously, I think Xperia ZL is one hell of a phone out of a box and we are already getting updates. I am also not totally satisfied with everything, but who/what is perfect ? In such cases I always remember the movie Some Like It Hot and last sentence: "Nobody's Perfect" and then is everything easier for me
Sry for offtopic

chill bro, its just a casual remark that i merely hope for only, because a saw a major screen contrast improvement in the Z after the update and hope that ZL would get it too. No body is complaining, Btw, Singapore has Speech freedom . Ofcos i do like ZL, if not i would not sell my Z away for a ZL !! Perheps as someone said, Z is more Popular thats why its getting updates faster, i just do really hope ZL would not be neglected. You see, SONY phones are real slow here in Singapore, i cant even find a decent case/ pouch here! Worst of all, the sales person at SONY CENTER told me that they will not be bringing in any ZLs any more due to the low demand. So chill bro, i would appreciate a nicer tone. No heart feelings.

Less updates means less things need fixing! I have a Nexus 4 and the ZL and even though the Nexus 4 gets the latest and greatest Google software, I still like the ZL more. I would have probably liked the Z too, but there's still no T-Mobile US compatible model out yet, and the ZL is cheaper.
I get a lot of compliments on it, it's very unique.

The reason ZL recieved less updates is that it has less things to be fixed. The first update which was .434 was released on Z and ZL at same time as both devices suffered from sudden death issue. ZL also has the white balance setting from start which Z got in .253 update. Even ZL has slightly better display than Z. ZL's .253 update was just for colour correction and some camera improvement. And for .307 update, it only has speed dial setting and not even all variants of Z have got this update. So now that Z and ZL are equal in stability and fixes sony will release the later updates at same time for both of these devices
And most important!! You wont get any other 5inch device in such small frame

Havnt I told you! ZL got 4.2.2 update before Z

Regretting Switching to ZL

Although i have posed PLEASED TO UPGRADE TO ZL from Z, now i somehow start to regret.. day by day. The limelight is totally focused on the Z, more phones out, the ZR, the Xperia M... If you to to the Xperia Facebook you can't even find a single trace of ZL. The latest .307 also not arrived yet.
Just take a look at the ZL's XDA forum vs the Z's. It real quiet here. ****... More crazy, Singapore SONY shop STOPPED SELLING ZL !!!
ZL is a good phone! Just no glass backing and Water proof. Let me know your thoughts..
Can't you just return it? I got the ZL because I am on AT&T and wanting the LTE but agreed that ZL is not a very popular phone.
I blame sony for their bad marketing.:-/

I really don't understand you, you regret because ZL is a good phone but not so popular as Z Just the opposite for me, I am glad that I have a phone which is not so mainstream ...
I must say these recent threads are really strange and left me head scratching. Couldn't you just make you mind?
What is most important - is it a good phone? Does it do job well for you?
Why do you care about bull**** like facebook pages and amount of people on some forum?
I think he like the phone but because of lack of support by developer he just feel ZL owner has been neglected.
I agree with you that ZL forum is very quiet, that thing nothing much we can do but hopefully all Z developers will come to ZL too.
Sometime i feel that too but in the positive way, ZL is a very good device with small size compare to other 5" phone, just enjoy the device, when it come to change just change, think positively, no need to burden urself with the regretting feel, it will eat you from inside.
Chill up
Butarx really speaks what I am thinking, ofcos I love the phone, but it's the support from Sony, without that, our developers is difficult to do any mods or any good Roman.
i like my XZL as is not more
@OP, i think there many mod thread on XZ where can implement to our XZL, just find it mate.
I like the ZL more than the Z, another thing about the Z I hear people after using the phone for while it the wear and tear will likely to get water into the phone so it no longer waterproof ending up damage, yes the more development on the Z forum than ZL forum at the moment as the Z as been release a few months earlier.
I like the feel off the back of the ZL phone rather than Z when holding it as well plus smaller in size with same screen size plus as I said the water resistant will not last long on the Z.
ZL doesn't need as much attention of developers as Z, ZL is simply better phone than Z
I think at the best way to treat this problem is to work on something that will unify both Z and ZL and things will work on both devices...
How? Have no idea.
But it's the same specs, made in the same time, so probably 90% of the HW is exactly the same. Why not include this 10% of drivers in the ROM and input a choice option on instalation between Z and ZL?

[Q] Android 4.4 kitkat any chance for S/SL,acro S?

Well maybe a lot of us we now that today Google anunced the next Android and noo its not 5.0 Key lime pie it's Kit kat 4.4....
since qualcomm does not release drivers an we are for that screwed up to be on 4.1.2 (and not andorid 4.3 or at least 4.2) ans that sony it's a sh*t in updates
You think that we are going to recive it?
the great "slogan" of kitkat "It's our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody."
wat you do you think or expecta abour that?
Personally i think that will remplace the old 2.3 to 4.4 and the JB to 4.4 will add a lot more of features andd the fragmentation will be "gone" and all in 4.4, but then i think so twice and F*ck if sony cant give us 4.2 and 4.3 because of qualcom we will stay in 4.1 :S
OFFICIALLY, I don't think so. But i believe the developer in XDA will sort it out, somehow. Oh by the way, i'm fine with 4.1.2.
The Xperia S is getting older by the day, so I don't think that there will be any chance of an official 4.4 update for our phone. I do think that developers will create some 4.4 ROMs for it, though. I wish I could try out the selection of ROMs out there, but my bootloader can not be unlocked.
We can only count for Rayman and letama in this situation
In my view it is not going to happen. When will they release kitkat? 2014?
These phones just get too old...
i dont see any point about "the phone is old".
so what? yes it's getting older, but it doesn't mean lost all capability for running new OS.
in my opinion, it just marketing strategy from manufacturer, they want our money. so they stop support for "old" hardware. Of course, they can create new software for our old xperia with additional budget if they want to do so, but they raise nothing.
i didn't blame qualcomm or sony. this is very logic marketing strategy from manufacturer, i will doing the same if i'm the CEO.

Never said it lost capability, and I agree, it is most likely a marketing strategy to end support for old products and push for people to fork out money for their newer product range.

Well I still partly blame Qualcomm, and Sony shouldn't have used such an old SoC. But if I really cared, I wouldn't have bought this phone, it's still miles ahead of the armv6 thing I had before. Anyway, you're right it's partly marketing, they want to sell new phones. And it's still a management problem. You can't just conjure up firmware, some developer needs to make it. Sony has a lot of models to support so developers have to be reassigned to newer models.
But that's part of the problem, I don't get why Sony makes such an abundant amount of models. Instead of making something like the Xperia L or M, they could still make the Xperia S and sell that for about the same price (and XS is way better specced than XL). Something like Samsung does with their Galaxy S (insert number) Advance/Plus/Whatever phones. I thought Sony was going to concentrate on the high-end market, but they keep on making those BS cheap phones that make Android look bad. I'm sure Sony could manufacture and sell an Xperia S or T for about €200 right now.

Don't blame Sony on that one. It's your provider demanding a locked bootloader and you bought it through them (probably sponsored with your subscription plan). I don't usually tell people to get a Samsung, but next time you get a phone with your subscription, get one with a bootloader that's less secure. I know the 2011 Xperia's were easier to unlock, but that was no excuse to just blindly assume the 2012 line is (if you even researched that). I heard that some Samsung phones have secure bootloaders in the US though, so even that party might be over. In general though I'd advise you to get a SIM-only subscription and be the boss over your own phone (and yeah that could mean paying €400 instead of €100 for your phone, you want an unlockable bootloader or not? At least you save on the cheaper subscription)

Good idea but I like more to a refined campaign give my Xperia S for a discount for Xperia SP, or Z o ZL, but the bootloader it's not a bad idea
But it was supposed that key lime pie will be able do fit on a 512 ram phone if really its the case then 2.3 will jump to 5.0(and Xperia of 2011 should have to) but it's not 5.0 it's 4.4 and referring to the slogan "It's our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody." I hope that in October give us a good idea of what means

I'm not complaining with the updates so far. I think they did a good job (although a bit late) with the updates, but if the phone is able to run the new android versions, they could give us a chance. Also, after they drop support the subscription period will be over, so the phone will be 100% ours.
This is just like what people did to apple when the iPod 3 came out. People wanted all the awesome features of 3.1.2 on the iPod touch 2 the multi tasking and what not and apple said it couldn't handle it. Buy samsung s4 ... you will get you OS update soon enough. except apple & sammy , all OEM sucks with update.(tested)
I´m like you. Xperia arc since 2011. I´m going to buy the new nexus 5. Don´t buy sony, as you experienced in xperia arc, after one year no updates (also on my girlfriend xperia s). And the most important clean android (not like samsung)

[DISCUSSION] Anyone Else with the AT&T Ion feel cheated?

I've had the LT28at for almost a year now and I absolutely hate it. After being screwed by both Sony and AT&T it never really lived up to its hype. I find it slow and extremely buggy, and even after manually installing jellybean (.96 at that) it never really got any better, but in fact much worse. I was just wondering if anyone else here felt the same way? Or differently? Please leave your comments below.

It looks okay but no one has been able to fully port the honami camera without bugs. Besides, We shouldn't have to flash on any mods to get a smooth and responsive smartphone from 2012. Especially one that had so much hype. It just goes to show that neither Sony nor AT&T cared much about it. It's not even on their website anymore, which shows Sony didn't follow through with their "18 months of support" policy
Actually Sony did follow through. The Ion has been out for longer than 18 months now. If you want a stable rom on the AT then run the Rogers 211. It is the only firmware I have had no issue with. Even running most the ported ZU and Z1 stuff it works great. The one thing that has bugged me is trying to use Honami framework as the device does not seem to like it much. Even supercharged it seems to have issues.
Do I feel cheated?? No not really seeing as I payed nothing for the thing. At this point I don't really see myself getting rid of it. I would love to have the boot unlocked but oh well. I plan to pick up a Z once they drop down some more and it has so much dev stuff available. I for one am not real happy with where android is heading now and none of the newer devices are getting my attention.

I for one am not real happy with where android is heading now and none of the newer devices are getting my attention.

Don't mean to argue the point but the ion has been out for 17 months (June 2012) and it has been dropped, especially the AT&T variant which is stuck on ICS, the last update being in May. And I've tried all of the jelly bean firmwares including the unofficial 96, (why unofficial when the Xperia S got it officially?) and they all have problems, not to mention all of this voids your warranty. The way I look at it at this day in age when you buy what is advertised to be a "high end" smartphone, it should at least be bug free or close to it out of the box. I shouldnt have to void my warranty

Last I checked rooting does not void your warranty. Unlocking boot loader does but on the AT it cant be done anymore unless something changes. What I have learned at this point is do not buy carrier phones as they are really locking them down at this point. If you want a top notch no bug phone then good luck because there really isn't one. So very few current devices are bug free now with carriers and the oem trying to stuff so much crap in the darn thing. But it is what it is I guess.
I will say it is possible using this great community work to fix the bugs and have a awesome device. You just have to do a little leg work.

I hear you on that, and I know that bug free is of course impossible and probably always will be. Nothing's perfect. But what I'm saying is that there's so many little things, the LED for example. It's barely visible, and Sony didn't fix it for the ICS update or the Jelly bean update and we all know how easy it is to fix, with root. Which does void your warranty because it counts as tampering.
In my opinion, the Ion hasn't gotten "updates", just different firmwares. Each firmware has its own advantages but they come at the expense of something else. I agree that hardware wise it has great potential, but it's the locked bootloader issue that's holding it back
This phone has great potential. It just the fact we cant unlock the bootloader. And because of that, i sim unlocked to phone and dropped at&t. Im now using T-Mobile. My next step is to buy a different phone. And sad to say it but i dont think i will ever buy sony again. My first sony phone and not being able to unlock the bootloader... *Sigh* im going back to htc for good. Buh Bye Sony!

Good luck with HTC. They have some really bad hardware issues these days.
I sold my ion for 100$ seems fair to me, new phones will almost all phones will have their loaders locked for contract phones, I'll just buy them outright and sell my upgrades for the cash

The Evo and Inc 2 had allot of problems. I had two inc 2 that had the ear speaker break. I have also fixed quite a few on Evo's and Thunderbolts as well. Just a little reading on xda and you will see it is very common on all HTC stuff the last few years.
I came from the Xperia X10, which was free with AT&T .
Then I went to the ION, for free also
I have to say that stock Sony ROM's are very stable and fully working.
I have never had any issues, unless I have been adding mods and tweaks.
If you get the phone free then stock with root and recovery is the best you can hope for.
If you had paid full price and were able to use custom kernels and ROM's you could tweak it exactly the way you like.
I have had no issues with the camera, still or video.
To this day I would still recommend this phone to all the people I know for an excellent daily phone. I don't know anyone else into phones & XDA like I am.
My only gripe is that the ION doesn't completely rotate. Like the lock screen & the home launcher. Even with my Sony smart dock it wont rotate without a video connection.
I do use a honami launcher mod as a workaround.
This is not an AT&T issue though.
I do NOT feel cheated at all.
I got exactly what I paid for. Over $800 in Sony phones for a total of $0.02. 1 penny each.

Buying Z1C[Help]

Should I spend my money on Z1 Compact? How good of a phone is it? I am a bit worried because I am not finding enough development in here.

Yes you should, awesome phone, development will be pumping hard like a big orgy.

For what it's worth: I had my Z1C for a few weeks until it literally died for no apparent reason. Treated it like a jewel, always in a case, never dropped etc and one day it turned itself off and couldn't get it to turn on again. No combination of buttons, resets, restores (that I couldn't do, as the phone was dead), recharges or else brought it back to life. Had to send it in for repair, and discovered that Sony uses a 3rd party (SBE in the UK) who, after 7 days, notified me that the required components where out of stock and had to be sourced from outside of the UK.
Not impressed with the support, at all, but yea the handset itself is fantastic.. really miss it.

I also hoped so for development but there are not many dev threads :/
Otherwise its fantastic phone
From what I've seen so far, majority of Dev are from the Z1. As most of the Dev ported ROM/ Kernel towards Z1C and are identical. No doubt is a great phone comparing the Specs and Price to other flagship.

Install the patch available in the dev section and you will be able to use most of the stuff from Z1. it's a great phone except for the vibration (haptic feedback) which is horrible.
---
Sendt fra Z1C
Where's that patch? Is it here on Z1c section? haven't seen it. Is it like a universal patch so that i can use kernel and roms from Z1?
Also u can buy z1, its similar with z1c except display size, resolution and battery size..

Yes, you can install a Z1 rom.
If you ain't a fan of big screens then yes N with same hardware, I guess almost if not all Z1 roms could be ported

Free advice, don't update to kitkat just yet

Great device, if it works and doesn't just die of hardware failure.
Mine literally died for no reason 1m after I bought it. Shut itself off and never turned on again. Any combination of buttons and charging did nothing to revive it. The Sony Companion Software's repair function on Mac doesn't work as it doesnt support Maverick's version of Java.
So I had to send it to repair, but Sony doesn't operate its own repair centre and relies on a 3rd party here in the UK. The repair centre (SBE Ltd) apparently didn't have the required components in stock. As a result it's now been 2 weeks that my z1c is in repair and no idea when I will get it back. Sony could have sent me a replacement unit instead of keeping me waiting, which would have been nice since my damn z1c was almost brand new, but no.. they'd rather not give a damn, and make sure that this is the last Sony product I ever buy.
Very very very disappointed. Apple would have given me a replacement unit immediately, no questions asked.

It's not laggy, in fact in most aspects it's better, but there are still a few bugs, N the battery life kinda goes down in kitkat , the Ui N camera all gets better though

Get an unlocked Z1c from Clove (I've bought two phones from them, and had a good experience with a warranty issue with the last one) and root it ASAP. Battery is awesome on 4.4 with SlimKat (and probably others) in my experience. I am sure we'll have a solid kernel soon if you like to OC/UV and the like, but I honestly don't see the need.
My ONLY gripe was my issue with the flash bleed, which turned out to be an issue with how they designed the back cover. Bad Sony! I fixed it by replacing the plastic back with the glass one.
If you are after a dev popular model, look elsewhere, like z1 or z2.
I know I am posting in the wrong forum for such a comment, and might have rocks thrown at me by devs of xda...but the stock rom is, despite bugs that affect all products, sony or not, this one is pretty decent. You don't need root to accomplish certain performance gains that were needed in phones of the past. I cannot understand why anyone would want a different Rom, and in the very limited and ordinary way I use the phone, I cannot see any features I would like to add on that Sony failed to provide. A humble personal opinion.
Take this with a huge fistfull of salt.. that's coming from a guy who thought so till about 2 months ago, where limitations of KK (not sony) forced me to root my device to gain rightful access to the sd card again. I am grateful to those devs who made this possible
