Current status of OUYA development - Ouya Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a sticky or a centralized location which shows the current status of development? e.g. Root, bootloader, recovery, apps, sideloading, and so on?
I have my OUYA on the way and wanted to see how far it has come in the forums.
This is what I found
-Recovery/Root/ROMs
[RECOVERY] Ouya CWM Recovery
The CWM for Ouya project
[HOWTO] Installing Superuser/busybox for Mac
OUYA ROM and other question
[WIP] Building CM 10.1
-Sideloading/Apps/ADB
[HOWTO] adb / sideloading / superuser access
[APP] Google Play Store fix
Sideloaded working apps for OUYA
This is just a quick rundown of what I found that seemed most useful for starting. Anyone else have anything they would like to add?

Nope, but this should be stickied. Thanks for makign it easy.

I suggest also creating a list of introductory resources about adb, superuser, clockwork mod and custom rooms. Since OUYA is so inexpensive, a lot of noobs (myself included) are messing around with this stuff for the first time. Unfortunately some people can't be bothered to find this stuff on their own. I have some bookmarked and will post them tomorrow from my PC.

+1 Great idea.

Before anyone asks any questions about rooting their OUYA, reading these is mandatory. The burning questions that aren't answered there are. Yes, the OUYA is already rooted, and no installing superuser will not keep you from accessing the OUYA store.

Noob Question regarding root

I am totally new to smartphones, rooting, android, etc.
I have a new EVO. I would like to root in order to access free tethering. Nothing more, nothing less. I like my phone exactly the way it is. I don't want to flash custom roms, manipulate apps, etc. etc.
Can anyone suggest a SIMPLE root method that would JUST accomplish free tethering?
Thanks!
Lots of tutorials there.
First I enabled installing apps from APK in Settings > Applications. Then I just went to http://www.unrevoked.com/m and downloaded the APK and installed it, ran it, clicked the button. Then I got this APK: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre2.apk&can=2&q=

[Q] Deploying Samsung Note

Hi, I soon will be purchasing several Samsung note 2s for my company. I would like to set up one with what apps I want permitted, appearance and security restrictions on one phone. Would it be possible then to install this on every subsequent phone? I don't want to remove any of the Samsung software or anything, simply customise the phone and easily apply those changes to many phones. I've searched about custom ROM's, would that be the best route to go down?
Not to rain on your parade, but how would you prevent them from hitting XDA, connecting to Odin or whatever, and going on their merry way?

Hahaha. Sorry that was just too funny. But he is right, you might need to brainwash your employees into using their top of the line device to only use your apps that you predefine.
Here's another way to go about it: check each employees phone before work everyday to make sure everything is how you want it.
I'm not sure how to set it up, but I think it is safe to say that if you do, it won't be changed through the owner flashing custom ROM's.
I don't think an average person knows about that stuff and wouldn't look into it too much.
Good luck
Thanks for the replies

I can already enforce the security policies via Google Apps Enterprise. So if they did wipe the phone and flash it, they'd need me to reactivate their phone to allow them to access company emails and documents e.t.c
What part in particular wasn't a smart question?

Indeed my employees are social workers I really doubt flashing their phone will be top of the list.
So I need to create a custom rom and flash it to the other phones?

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I can enforce a few things when I enroll the phone to google apps and will probably end up using an app.
I just need a way now to do this all on one phone and copy all the settings, display customisations e.t.c easily to all other phones rather than go through the process every time. Can anybody help??
Hi. ..
M not expert. But I think this could be a solution.
Root all with exynos abuse. Install recovery of choice.
Modify the device. Create backup .and restore on all devices.
And .restore stock recovery. Use triangle away if binary count is increased. And unroot.
Others Pls correct if am wrong.

You could use titanium backup to backup the original phone and restore it to all the other phones. If stock, this would only backup apps + data. If rooted, you could also add the root addon so you could backup settings + data and again restoring the data from the original phone backup

Hi, this looks interesting. I've had a look and it says that it does not backup all possible settings, does anyone know what settings are not backed up? And are home screen customisations backed up?
The comment about a recovery backup is akin to making a ghost image on a pc. This route would likely be easier than trying to roll your own rom first time out of the gate.
So, build out a phone the way you want it, use recovery mode to make a nandroid/backup/ghost, and then push that to the other phones via recovery mode on them.
Recovery mode is an alternate booting area where you can run backups and restore, and the mode you use to "flash" new roms, updates, and scripts.

Hi,
Here are detailed steps with links.
1. Root all phones using Exynos Abuse apk by Chainfire.
get it from below Link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297#
Install SuperSU from Google Play after rooting, (if it is not installed by rooting process itself) *.Thanks to Chainfire.
Note : there are other methods to root which needs to use Odin . Try out below guide. Very useful it is.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1930418
2. Now Install Recovery of choice . There are two recoveries most used. Both equally good
a. CWM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901196
b. Teamwin - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1956939
btw I use Teamwin, as easier for first timer with touch controls
3. Now you can modify the device(only one), Search this forum and google for your requirements.
4. Once done with all the changes. You need to use recovery to get a backup. It will be Images of various partitions of the phone memory including system, boot, etc. ( note - Do not take back-up of EFS, Only Data and System will work for your requirement)
5. Copy Back-up folder on a memory card. Insert in other phones and restore back-up using recovery.
6. Now You will have all the modifications you need, but your phones are rooted and hence no warranty, You need to unroot to claim warranty
7. before unrooting use Triangle away to reset binary count. You get it from below link (again Thanks to Chainfire)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
8. Unroot using SuperSU (option available in settling). Also check Google more about unroot process. ( There is reason I claim myself as NO EXPERT)
You will need ODIN.exe on your PC .
get ODIN 3.07 zip from http://samsung-updates.com/Odin307.zip.
Do follow all the instructions on each of the links I have provided.
Bye TC

turn off updates

is there a way to turn off updates (i know its stupid ,most devices ask, but some just move the update) I want to be able to stop any further updates , is there a command line or script that stops this?
You can Google "Kindle Fire disable OTA", but something tells me we won't be seeing anymore updates from Amazon for this tablet. I think the best thing for you to do is install a custom ROM. If you like the stock OS, MoDaCo is the best way to go. It is rooted with OTA disabled and a host of other various mods and tweaks, but still keeps the user interface relatively untouched.
Thanks and thanks for helping everyone in here

[Q] Nexus 7 for Xmas now rooted (noob) but help needed

Hi all,
I got a nexus 7 for Xmas. It's my first Android device but I did have a Dell axim a number of years ago and played around with roms.
I am a happy iOS user but wanted to have a look at Android as it is quite mature now.
So I have rooted my nexus and I wanted ask a few questions
1 I have created a backup using rom manager. Is this a nandoid backup?
2 is it necessary to get rom manager pro? What does the paid version do extra?
3 are any roms available that are based on 4.4 or is it too early?
4 what is the best network media streamer? I have xbmc on my apple TV and I know I can install on my nexus. But should I or are there better options?
5 how do you transfer movies to the nexus? Via USB to the movie folder?
Thanks for any tips. Apologies for the noob questions!
I never used Rom manager so I cannot help you with those questions.
Regarding the other ones, there are many Roms based on 4.4 to 4.4.2 KitKat and for 4.4.2 I would recommend Clean ROM 2.6. Boosts performance and leaves the Tablet almost stock.
The only media streamer I know is XBMC so I cannot recomend anything else.
Once rooted you can drag and drop videos to anywhere you like I believe.
I use Archos Video Player to stream smb shares from my pc. It makes thumbnails for you and has a nice ui.

Just found that sky go doesn't work on rooted devices. I thought this was a iOS jailbreak issue!
Any workarounds for this problem for Android?
In superSu hide the root, some apps then work, others remain disabled as is probably a DRM issue which os mire likely because of the unlock

Thanks. I'll take a look at rom toolbox.
I have a more general question about whether I really need to root my device. I think I can still install roms without being rooted. Correct?
I find it annoying that apps such as sky go detect rooted devices and you end up in a battle to get these apps working!
when do you need to root? What is the use case (apart from side loading pirated apps that I am not interested in)
Thanks

Root is an essential part of the Android experience, especially if you want to use everything Android has to offer. You will not be able to flash custom ROMs without having Root. Now I have Rom Manager Pro and I can tell you that when I first started out with Android that app what a lifesaver for me. However, now that I have a bit more experience with ROMs and Recovery Manager I would urge you start learning how to use your recovery manager. Did you install a custom recovery manager when you rooted your Nexus device? If you did not look into installing TWRP Recovery Manager. You can do everything from that Recovery Manager that you can pretty much do with Rom Manager such as make backups. The one great thing about Rom Manager is that it will identify your device and list some Nice ROM's that are available for your specific device. As for root again, some of the best apps available for Android require Root access. Apps like "complete linux installer" which allows you to put Linux on your tablet. Another great app is "titanium backup" this is an app that you will definitely want to buy the pro version. Support your developers! Titanium backup allows you to make a nice backup of all your apps and your user data. Gotten to level 40 on dead trigger 2? An update breaks your favorite app...with Titanium Backup you could restore an older version of an app and even restore your status within a game such as bringing you back to level 40 in the example of dead trigger 2 that i used...which has cloud but it was an example!
Oh one app you should seriously get for your stock Nexus 7 ROM is "quickboot". Quickboot which needs ROOT allows your to reboot your tablet, reboot into recovery mode, and reboot into the bootloader with just one click of a button. This app will truly come in handy on a regular basis...
Now you asked about ROMs...
Of course we have to mention Cyanogenmod! This is being considered the "Cadillac" of ROM's and seems to be a very favorite choice among people starting out with Android to among the most advanced "power users" of Android.
I have tried "Ice Cold Rom Project" and i like that ROM very much...
Another ROM that I can't wait to try out is the "unofficial" OmniROM Project for the Nexus 7. Now this ROM is supposed to support Multi-Windows. Have you seen the Multi-Windows commercials for the Galaxy S4? Supposedly the "unofficial" OmniROM project has made that available for the Nexus 7 and i can't wait to try it out! I will be flashing this Monday...
Here is a link for that ROM on XDA -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2533936
Lastly...
You mentioned that one of your apps is not working correctly because your device is rooted? While this has never happened to me personally I don't doubt that it could happen but not exactly sure why root access would cause an app to stop working. Here is something you could try...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amphoras.hidemyrootadfree
That link above is to an app called "hide my root" that one is the paid version but there is a free one just do a search on the Google Play Store. What it does is hides root or blocks root for taking place for a given period of time. If root really is the problem for that app then this might help as you can block root and then try starting the app...
Well congrats on coming over to Android! I think once you get the hang of things you will never go back to the iOS (maybe!). Android is such an amazing project and operating system but it would not be a quarter of what it is without all of these people here on XDA. The people here are what make Android great and what make the open source community great!. Keep playing with Android and don't worry about taking risks with your tablet. If you make a backup of your ROM you can always flash back your stock ROM as long as you can boot into your Recovery Manager. If you can't there is a way to push a stock ROM to your tablet with ADB. It is almost impossible to brick your Nexus device but still don't make ridiculous mistakes such as not making your backups!
Oh...
Yes you can transfer data from your tablet to your PC in a number of ways. One way is with a USB cable but you need to have the correct drivers installed. Do a google search for USB drivers for your Nexus device and you will find the correct ones you need. Another option that you could use is FTP. The Google Play Store has some great "FTP SERVER" apps which allow you to turn your tablet into an FTP Server. You could then download an FTP client on your PC such as "FileZilla" and log into your Android Tablet and start transferring or downloading files.
I hope this has been helpful for you...

I actually find CWM better than TWRP, though I will admit I like the TWRP layout and design better. TWRP asked me for a password when I tried to restore after a softbrick on my N7, I couldn't access my TWRP backup even though I could get into the relevant directory.
After some research I found that this was due to how the boot-loader had been unlocked, however I did it correctly (actually followed an XDA tutorial just to be sure), so I have been a bit put off TWRP because when I really needed it, it didn't work.

Maybe give it another try. You can make a CWM backup first, just in case.
I used CWM, RM, and TB on my N1 from the beginning, without problems. Then, a couple of years ago, they all started to wonk out from time to time, so I switched to TWRP and Rom Toolbox. Never have a problem. But maybe I should give the others another try, too.

I've decided to stick to CWM on my N7, mainly because I know it and I wanted a recovery I was familiar with while playing around with stuff like Xposed modules. I did like TWRP, I'll probably flash that on my phone over CWM and see how that goes.
I swear by Rom Toolbox, major props to the Dev(s) for that bad boy.

Amazon Fire HD 8" & 10" - remove firelauncher (no root)

I am ecstatic to announce that I have found a solution as of 2016! Please visit my thread describing the tutorial on how to remove firelauncher and use any launcher you choose without rooting your Fire HD device!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/general/tut-remove-default-launcher-amazon-fire-t3288192
I have been reading a lot of forum posts and decided to make an account here in order to communicate with you guys. I see you are all interested in possible modifications to the Kindle Fire, and as you must know the HD 8 & 10 models do not have a root currently.
I am relatively new to Android but I am really enjoying working with it. The only thing I do not like about the FireOS is the firelauncher (com.amazon.firelauncher), and I have been looking for a working way to remove, replace, or modify it without rooting (unless there is a way).
I found two methods to accomplish this, however it needs some tweaking. I think someone as experienced as you might be able to perfect it.
Method 1:
I noticed that the stock APK file, ("/system/priv-app/com.amazon.firelauncher/com.amazon.firelauncher.apk") cannot be touched as it is a read-only filesystem, but I can reinstall it. (I was able to reinstall a slightly older version of firelauncher successfully using "adb install -r -d firelauncher.apk" successfully by the way). During the installation there is a brief moment where it is deleted, and the prompt to select a different default launcher is presented, and works. Sadly I have no clue on how to prevent firelauncher from finishing its installation. I tried "reboot -p" to kill the device in the middle of an installation and various other things but nothing worked.
Method 2:
Like I mentioned previously, I was able to reinstall any version or a modified version of the APK. This allowed me to edit the contents of the APK and delete some important resources, causing the launcher to crash and switch over to the last opened window, I think there is potential in here if classes.dex could be modified somehow.
Method 3:
I was able to take a different launcher and decompile it, edit the package name from net.example.testlauncher to com.amazon.firelauncher, however I don't know how to sign it properly and the mismatch caused the tablet to reject the apk. This has REAL potential as a method, but it may be impossible to forge a certificate signature.
Edit: It may be possible to disable the certificate checking,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698352
If anyone is able to collaborate with me on this, we may be able to finally get rid of the horrendous firelauncher. Additionally, anyone who would like to remotely test things on my Fire HD 8 let me know and I'll setup a console or something for you.
I am attatching a previous version of firelauncher.apk, to install it (which there is no real reason to do so) type adb install -r -d firelauncher.apk
I have been experimenting with modified backup and restore files, no luck there. I have also worked with sideloading certain files, and of course no luck there either. There might be some potential in the fastboot screen, but I am not sure which command to use to unlock the kernal. I will post a list of all the getvars if anyone will find them useful. I remember unlock_status: false but that is about it. fastboot oem unlock does nothing as it is an invalid command.
I am ecstatic to announce that a temporary fix for this has been found! Please visit my thread describing the tutorial on how to remove firelauncher and use any launcher you choose without rooting your Fire HD device!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/general/tut-remove-default-launcher-amazon-fire-t3288192
Either deal with the quick delay of the fire launcher, or just don't use a different launcher.
Launcher Hijack works flawlessly if you delete the firelauncher. The home button will still work, but there are other side affects.
If you don't delete firelauncher, and I sincerely hope you haven't, then you still get the occasional delay like normal.
Provided said:
I GOT IT TO WORK!
After my latest failures, I got the bright idea to try something that has never worked for me before: LauncherHijack
I downloaded LauncherHijackV3 from GitHub(mod please help with the link ) and sideloaded it onto my kindle and installed.
I opened it and selected ADW Launcher (the only one on the list), and now the home button works beautifully, with no lag at all.
I'm so happy im gonna make a new thread!  :victory: :good: :victory:

Well... but there is the problem that whenever you go home, sometimes, you see for a brief period the amazon launcher, making it confusing and weird. That thing made me return to the amazon launcher due to the trouble it gave me.
So.. lag or no lag? Do you still see the fire launcher when using adw?

Have you tried to read FAQ first, before "inventing a bicycle"? This is well known trick for a loooong time, and discussed here, in Fire HD 8/10 forums many-many times...

Yes I am aware of that now. At first I had deleted firelauncher and then installed LauncherHijack. This completely erased any lag or glitches with the main fire launcher, but had some other side effects not related to the launcher or the home button.
So my statement is now outdated and i will be editing it now.

Yes. I believe there is no way around this as of now without root.
