Where is Telnet in Windows RT 8 or 8.1 - Windows RT General

How do we enable Telnet in Windows 8 or 8.1
I looked in the normal add remove windows components. Not there.

Missing from the base install, apparently. On 8.0 you can use PuTTY. On either one, you can remote desktop to an OS that supports it, or you can use Powershell remote commands, or you can use one of the several apps in the store that support Telnet.
The server is also missing, which doesn't surprise me in the least (and is mildly reassuring; there's no good reason to use it that I'm aware of since more secure alternatives exist for both 'nix and Windows).

PuTTY is available on all x86 systems. Its also available for jailbroken RT systems (which means no 8.1 as of yet).
Otherwise, I didnt think anyone really used Telnet. Thought SSH had largely displaced it.
From what I've been told PuTTY was a better telnet client than the built in windows one anyway. And I am sure you can probably install a telnet server.

I did use it on 8, but was stupid and did not backup, thinking it would allow me to revert back to 8.0
Now I am stuck with 8.1 and no way to go back to 8.0
Tried to restore to factory version but still keeps 8.1 as the base version.
Anyone care to share a 8.0 version to me, so I can revert back.

Just checked the store, simple search for "telnet", 7 results, a few of which seemed to be SSH rather than telnet. Might be worth looking at them briefly.

PC Software –How to Run on Win Mobile?

I was wondering, tht when buying a new smartphone if I go with windows based OS on mobile, will I be able to run any software tht can run on windows based desktop computer? If not, such functionality is expected to come with forthcoming Windows 8 mobile?
PS: I wana run my live stock market terminal on mobile phone.
Since ver 7, the os is no longer called windows mobile; its now called windows phone. but to answer your question, no you can't run desktop applications on windows phone (or windows mobile for that matter) and this is unlikely to change.
That said I'm sure you can find another application to achieve whatever it is that you're after on the marketplace...
:-( my all needs are getting completed with an smartphone, but i guess eventually i will have to buy a laptop as well... just to run my stockmarket software.... Damn and they are telling smartphones (Like SGS2 etc.) are quickly replacing laptops...
PS: Wht is the latest ver. of windows phone called and, what is the windows phone marketplace url (Kind of new to smartphones)
Well for a lot of people smartphones or tablets can replace computers, most people aren't stockbrokers!
The latest version of Windows Phone is 7.5 Mango, which is currently at RTM stage - i.e. released to OEMs pending approval for new devices and upgrades to existing devices.
The Windows Phone Marketplace can only be accessed via the phone or via the Zune desktop software. The Zune software comes highly recommended from me, it's a very, very good media management software and I can't live without the wireless sync function anymore!
You can browse the marketplace through Zune without owning a Windows Phone device.
Perhaps you could let the community know what it is exactly that you need to do and someone might be able to suggest something?
EDIT: As you're new to smartphones, from a usability perspective Windows Phone 7 would be an excellent choice for you - it is simply brilliant to use, the interface is understated and elegant and the lack of pointless graphics makes it both simple and quick. Microsoft have clearly put massive effort into making Windows Phone highly usable and have surpassed pretty much all expectations, especially with the 7.5 update, which brings in a huge amount of functionality. A lot of people try and put Windows Phone down having never used it, because it's one of those things that needs you to spend 10 minutes with it to understand - but once you've spent 9 minutes with it, everything else just seems ridiculously complicated.

Silverlight in Windows
Hi
Silverlight apps are currently available in Windows and I think that the concept being put out there at the moment is that Windows 8 will run the same apps as Windows Mobile 8.
Nobody knows if this will become a reality or not.
Cheers

The best thing for you to do would be to find a mobile version of the software you are trying to run. Then get the device that runs that particular software.
The closest you'll come to running your "exact" software on a mobile device is to get a Windows based tablet or laptop. But to run your stock software on a smartphone, you will need the "mobile" version of that software, if it exists.
Also, check to see if your stock-terminal application is web-based. If it is, you may be able to access what you need with ANY smartphone through the smartphone's web browser. That means your "stock terminal" would work on Windows Phone, iPhone, Android, etc.

[Q] X11 forwarding to Windows RT

Hi guys.
I've a Rasperry PI and I would like to have the X11 display on my Windows RT screen via SSH or something else.
It's already possible if you have Windows (not RT version), using Putty and Xming but Xming is not available as far as I know under RT.
Anyone has an idea?
In my experience the X11 performance on the pi is just terrible for my liking, I run the pi without it (or did, damaged the SD card socket and am yet to attempt repair although I have several methods for how to do so). To be fair, I didnt need X11 on the pi anyway, only graphical thing I ran at all was open arena.
Something which may work (although not as well as Putty+XMing) is VNC. The pi is capable of acting as both VNC server or client with X11 running. TightVNC has been ported to jailbroken windows RT devices, both server and client modes functioning.
I'm not aware of any X11 servers for RT right now, sadly. Xming, as its name suggests, is compiled using MinGW GCC; currently we can't use that to target RT.
That's what I thought
I tried VNC and indeed it's working but kind of slow.
Thanks guys :good:

There is a RDP relay server available for linux, called xrdp (can't post links yet, but it's a first hit on google for 'xrdp')
xrdp lets you connect to your linux machine via RDP and allows you to define different profiles, to relay your RDP connection to services hosted on you linux machine like vnc or x11.

[Q] Is that possible to compile .cpp on RT by TC++ in dosbox?

As we know, we have an arm edtion of dosbox, and there is Turbo C++ for dosbox. So, I wonder if it's possible to compile .cpp files on RT by TC++ in dosbox? I am with 8.1 now. Is there anyone who wants to try?
No jailbreak for 8.1 as far as now. On 8.0 should work if it's working on your desktop.
Just keep in mind whatever you get cannot run on Windows RT natively.

MSVC from visual studio can target win32 on THUMB_2. That does mean you can only cross compile from a full x86 windows machine though.
There is a C# compiler on the device already. There is a signed perl binary somewhere. The C# compiler requires a jailbroken device to run the final application though and I doubt you'll find any students using perl.
I think its obvious that microsoft dont push developer tools too heavily considering you need a jailbreak to run non microsoft desktop software in the first place.
On jailbroken devices you have IKVM (which is a java virtual machine, its slow and nowhere near 100% compatible, there is no java compiler on the device yet), python and ruby. There is also SharpDevelop for C#, otherwise you have to use the compiler from CMD. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2092348

Unfortunately jailbroken device is not an option with the 8.1 (at least for now), well I guess the only thing to do is to wait for one.....

I'm well aware that jailbreak isnt an option on 8.1. Myriachan is working on it

[Q] Android to Windows RT? How?

I have a RCA android tablet. I have been doing some research and found that windows RT will work on ARM based tablets. However I cannot find a download or any information on how to load RT on my tablet. The only think I can find is Windows RT 8.1 ADK kit. Now according to the software the kit is suppose to be for deploying windows OS on any ARM based tablets, but as far as I can tell there is no GUI and I only took electronical engineering at ITT tech, I don't know **** about programing or code. So what I am asking is, is there a download available that you can download onto your desktop, connect a tablet and load windows RT. Also, has anyone seen this changemysoftware.com **** on you tube that claims to change your OS for you in like 15 minutes? Tried to download and all I get is some bull about the version I have is old and I need to download a new version but the mirror sites to download the app just keep you running in circles until you give up or spend all kinds of money. Sorry, had to vent a little there. Anyway, don't really care for android os and don't want to have to go out and buy a tablet with windows pre installed.

Though I am not familiar with Windows RT and its architecture, for your question, all I can say is, just like people build android os from source by using its sources (AOSP and it's derivatives), IMO, you need to do a similar task to make Windows RT only for your device. The os for mobiles are device-specific type. And maybe the same trees- Device Trees, Vendor Trees and Kernel sources (which OEM provides) is used in Windows RT also.
P.S. I can bet my life that Android (or more precisely Linux) is more cooler than Windows!

Thank you for your response, however this really doesn't answer my question. I there a download somewhere for windows rt and how do you load it onto a tablet with arm processor? And as far as my phones are concerned I love android, but for a computer I like to browse actual websites not mobile ones and if I need to create a document I prefer office and all the functionality that I already know how to use.

DOS programs?

Are DOS programs able to run on win RT? I have a Fjölnir compiler I would like to run and it is for DOS. I currently use it on my win98se setup, but I would like to use it on the go.

Are you running Windows RT 8.0 by any chance? If so you can run the "jailbreak", and DosBox is available:

I use it quite a bit and it works great on my Surface RT. If this is a true DOS program it should work.

No, I'm on 8.1 I've tried it on dosbox on my Linux setup and it only sometimes works. I was wondering if it is possible to run them nativrly like on win98se
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Free mobile app
You could always try it and see, but I highly doubt it. Trying to run it natively via the command prompt you will probably run up against the fact that Windows RT devices are ARM not x86. DosBox masks that by providing a software layer to presents a virtual x86 DOS environment, whereas the command prompt will not and will expect compiled programs to be compiled for the ARM cpu architecture (not to mention digitally signed by Microsoft unless you run the jailbreak). Unless it happens to be a batchfile...
That's odd that it only sometimes works in DosBox... I wonder if some tweaking of the DosBox configuration might be needed... I'm really not much of an expert, but I know there are all sorts of settings that can be changed to suit the program (side note, I think it's awesome that one can set it to emulate a Tandy 1000).
There are rumors that a RT 8.1 jailbreak might finally become a possibility...

Just an FYI but I am pretty sure there will never be a Windows 10 RT. The last I heard Win10 was not coming to RT, but there would likely be an update to give some Win10 features to RT.
