Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition Review - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I was able to flash a full Google Edition ROM into my phone which is 100% working with no problems . you will need to be rooted and have an custom recover to get this also you will have to factory reset so a back up will be recommended. I will post on how to do this tomorrow as well as upload the file cause its 1.58gb
Here's my review showing it off:
Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition.

This is confirmed working for T-Mobile and at&t only at the moment. There are alit of people working to get this on spring and Verizon.
Everything works , Voice calls, Text, MMS, Camera ,IR Blaster , LTE, Everything. I have no ran into any problems and I'm even rooted.

Hey sounds great. But you should have put this under the General forum. Just a heads up.

Your post at AF and your Youtube link are misleading. Someone who didn't read this post would think that you're reviewing the actual Google Edition and not a different version running the GPE ROM.
Your question about storage is related to this. The GPE has 12.65GB visible to the user. A non-GPE with the GPE ROM has 9.72GB visible to the user due to partitioning. Until we can get the GPE PIT file to work on a non GPE, this will always be an issue.
Please update your Youtube Video title/description to reference that this is not a GPE, but just a GPE ROM. The storage information is misleading.

Warning about this - original poster is a scammer. He's trolling for hits/likes to his various social media accounts. Video is not of a Google Edition S4 (as he states in his AF and Youtube posts). It's a carrier-branded model with a GPE ROM, and yes, there are differences. The key difference is that of storage. A real GPE has 12.65GB visible to the user. A GPE ROM on a carrier-branded model has 9.72GB visible to the user. Author wasn't wise enough to catch this (in his video, he wonders why it's different). When I first notified the author of this discrepancy, he had the opportunity to come clean about this being a fake review (it's a ROM review, not a phone review, has he has the wrong phone). His response was to block me on Youtube.
In the author's post on XDA he at least admits that this is a custom ROM.

Very misleading... This is a ROM review not a Phone review...

Correct. And at first I figured it was a typo or harmless mistake. Since I first notified him, he edited a post on another board, kept the Youtube title the same, and blocked me on youtube. It's obvious now he's trolling for social media hits.

Noticed that it wasn't an actual Google Edition device and he's just doing a ROM review, looking through the comments though it's obvious he's fooled a ton of people. Started looking at his other vids.
6/22 he does a vid on "Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie Concept Art Design & Wishlist"
The video is basically him reading this article from 6/21 verbatim:
http://beatstechnology.blogspot.com/2013/06/appears-concept-android-50-interface.html
Oh Well.

I just find it odd that the video is using exact sentences that the article includes.
Also the issue isn't in regards to your post it's the YouTube video that people are taking issue with. Nowhere does it include that it's a flashed ROM, it's being passed off as an actual SGS4 Google Edition Phone.
You can see the confusion in your comments section of the video.

No you're right I seen why people would get confused but its also stated in the video , Also mentioned that you could flash it for yourself as well. In all both phones are the same except for the Memory capacity difference.

You're still faking. First off, the video doesn't state this. You claim that it's an actual GPE. Second of all, you've banned people from posting (and deleted their comments) on Youtube for pointing out that this is a ROM review. Also, there are some minor differences between the GPE and ROM aside from storage. We've seen people complain about lag in the ROM that isn't there with the real GPE. We've seen USB connection issues, wifi connection issues, and other things that need to be fixed in the ROM.
You're aware of this, but you shut down anyone that points it out to you. You're trolling for hits/likes.
EDIT: And let's not forget about this juvenile response;
http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...35120-my-galaxy-s4-google-edition-review.html
You're aware of what you're doing, and you're still doing it at AF and on Youtube, where the masses either don't notice or aren't aware enough to realize. You're taking a different tone here because you've been busted by multiple people. If this really was a "mistake" as you seem to allude, you would have corrected the title and description on the Youtube video to indicate that this is a GEP ROM loaded onto an S4.
In the video, you clearly state: "doing a quick review and a first look at the Google edition for the Samsung Galaxy S4." You never imply that this is a ROM on the phone.

This is how smooth the Hero SHOULD be!

http://android.modaco.com/content/h...291737/this-is-how-smooth-the-hero-should-be/
That looks super smooth! It greatly improves the overall experience and will probably lure me back to Rosie in favor of the default home screen
I cant see any difference between that and my hero. I get no lag and switching between screens is just as smooth and fast.

yeah, i agree with you. my hero Runs just as fast with no lag And i have the Flipping Clock!
Wait a minute! Now, How do we know thats an actual update coming up?? The video was made by modaco and posted at his website... You can clearly see it contains the superuser app and the market enabler app on the phone. An OFFICIAL VIDEO with the update would never have such apps installed!
Like i said before my hero runs just as fast and i could make a video to prove it.... But this is NO UPDATE PREVIEW OF WHATS COMING UP!
and now im thinking, everytime modaco makes a post in these forums, he links to his website where the actual posts are made... this is not the first time...

Hah, it is a video of the upcoming update!
I do say on the video that i've installed a few apps, and it is rooted (I said that on the first video take (that I corrupted by pulling the SD from the camera!)), not sure about the one I posted.
There are definitely considerable performance improvements in the new ROM, particularly when i've got all my usual stuff installed and running - Rosie remains smooth as butter (which it didn't before!)
Of course I link to my forum where the posts are made, i'm posting here for information!

I have a pink Hero at the moment, maybe i'll boot them with the same setup and do a comparison vid.

Hopefully it comes out soon, however i have made very little to no modifications to my hero to get it running as fast as i have, so im guessing that once i do my own modifications with the newer build ill be able to have things running better and faster than ever!
What is the build no?

HTC One X's horrific video bitrate - why isn't it talked about? [FIXED?]

EDIT: This guy just made my day!! I just made a 47kbit video with this mod to stock camera.
NOW we can close this thread if mods so desire =) Thank you everyone!
So the bitrate on HTC One X's camera is hilariously low.
Videos that it spits out terrible when compared to SGSII which I gave to my wife. Video is just strobbing and wobbling due to it.
I understand that some people have very low quality standards and are satisfied with it, and there were some threads about it here.. but everything kinda died out.
I think hardware is capable of "normal" bitrate, since some market camera apps allow for it.. But can we make a hack to our camera to allow for high bitrates?
I mean, I love the phone.. but what's the point of 1080p video capability if it spits out 10k bitrate? None.

Maybe that should tell you something. Do you think starting a new thread when others are open is going to change anything? It's been acknowledged and is for now a fact of life. What are you expecting to happen? More ranting? A petition perhaps? For those that are desperately miserable with all or parts of the One X, why don't you sell it and get an SGS3? Repetitive ranting here isn't going to change anything no matter how many threads are opened.
Duplicate threads, especially those that are stated as duplicate threads, get closed.
I agree, 720p goes ok, but 1080p stutters a lil bit.. the bitrate should be higher..
tried it with some other apps, like lgCamcorder.. you can select the bitrate and you'll get smoother video (20mbps is enough)
---------- Post added at 10:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:57 PM ----------
maybe HTC will eventually bring out an update, wich increases the bitrate of the camera app (hope so)

Look at you all puffing and pissed off, lol. Angry little creature.
I opened this thread because it's a legitimate question about why aren't those threads getting an attention they deserve. Perhaps people are satisfied with choppy wobbly video that One X produces, perhaps a solution has been found that I'm not aware of. Hence, the thread.
And a related question - What are you expecting to happen by yelling at me for opening this thread? More ranting? For you, desperately miserable and super angry about this thread, why don't you see a shrink - perhaps they can fix you up.
Now unless you got something relevant to contribute to the problem at hand, go rant somewhere else.

I remember seeing someone who developed a higher bitrate camera for Sensation trying to make one for HOX.. but not sure what happened there - did he lose interest?
It just surprises me that this isn't discussed much more.
Search for the sense HQcamera mod - when i was running sense i got 29fps at 11-12,000kbps and uncompressed/4-5mb pics BIG difference compared to stock camera. CM9 - im getting 18-19,000kbps with 22fps indoors, will test outdoors later.
It's been talked about A LOT, especially by me in this thread.

Yes, I remember that one. Unfortunately, development of it for HOX was stopped, and existing beta mod freeezes up and FCs a lot. I just tried latest 1.3beta for Sense4 - that is indeed the case.
I contacted that developer with a PM, asking him what does he need to fully port that mod for HOX, with 25+mbits for 1080p. If he needs a financial incentive to compensate for his time and effort, I'll get a bounty going here.
So far, only Camera ICS works decently well, without crashing.
LGCamera is on and off kind of thing. About half the time it doesn't record anything - just black video feed.

one thing to open a new thread to "talk about the problem" over and over, another with the purpose of actually solving / improving the issue.
imho i'm tired of discussing the "problem", it has been discussed already to death, that's why the search function is for.
as far as the "solution" goes, there's couple of threads/developments around which (WOW) are linked in the respective "problem" threads....
@OP: there's other alternatives to LgCamera that work well...care to search for them?

And your ranting adds what to the thread?
LGCamera doesn't work very well with HOX. Many times it can't get the feed from camera and won't work until reboot.
Camera ICS is a bad alternative as it's ugly, has adds and has resolution problems.
HDCamera mod doesn't work with HOX.
I did read those threads, that's why I opened this one.
Now, can we stop acting like a new thread costs millions of dollars and move on with the discussion? If you don't want to participate - don't participate. If all you want to do is complain - please avoid this thread kkthnx.

Just bought a paid version of Camera ICS - tested it out - stretched videos. Had to get a refund immediately.
So Camera ICS isn't a viable option, so is LGCamera that can't even connect to the camera about 80% of the time (tested on several ROMs).

but bitrate still @ 10-12mbps

[Q] Best AOSP rom (most stable and everything working)? What about stock based?

Hi guys,
Just wondering if there's a general consensus on the most stable AOSP rom? Preferably one that doesn't have anything (major) broken - e.g I can live without voice search, I must have a fully working camera, etc. Also built to be stable as a rock. Are the AOSP roms vulnerable to the SDS?
Or are they not quite there yet?
For those of you not on AOSP, what stock-based roms do you like? I don't really understand the difference between stock and things like ARHD for example? How stable is it compared to stock, and what about battery life? My 4.1.1 battery was incredible but 4.1.2 isn't so good.
Cheers!
Hi guys,
Just wondering if there's a general consensus on the most stable "What's the best ROM" thread? Preferably one that doesn't have anything (major) broken - e.g I can live without newbies opinions, I must have a fully detailed answers, etc. Also built to be the most stable as a rock thread, one that even the mods won't delete for being the 500th repeat thread. Are the AOSP roms threads vulnerable to the SDS (Sudden Deletion Syndrome)?
Or are the threads not quite there yet? Do we need another one?
For those of you not on XDA regularly, what stock-based roms threads do you like? I don't really understand the difference between searching and posting yet another thread for example? How silly is it compared to other threads, and what about sarcasm life, how quickly will my threads be mocked? My first thread was incredible but this "What's the best ROM" isn't so good.
Cheers!
Android Revolution HD (14.0 for the Galaxy Note 2) is probably the closest you're going to come to what you want. It's based on the stock ROM, but lordy! is it fast. And rock solid. Has a built-in installer that allows you to remove (or not) the Samsung cruft. Been using it since version 9, and I am quite happy with it. Check the thread in the developer forum.

Hilarious! No seriously, thanks for taking the time to satirise the thread without taking note of some of the questions I'd asked.
I've searched long and hard about SDS and not getting anything at all concrete about the implications of using AOSP. We don't all have the £500 to throw around and just risk bricking our device because somebody is to pretentious to actually help out someone that has taken the time to look but still needs some guidance.

Hi mate, thanks for the response. ARHD was great on my desire HD when I used it almost 2 years ago on that, and it looks to be the best stock rom for my needs - I appreciate the first hand review though! Still trying to get my head around aosp roms, many of which without buglists and uncertainties regarding SDS :/

SDS Thread
What - is - the - best - ROM
The sad truth of SDS is that no one really knows (sure, there's a LOT of speculation) anything about it. I know 3 people with S3's who have had their phone die after they upgraded to the latest Sammy Official "patched for SDS" ROM. It's sadly a gamble we all take.
Anyway, if you're really done some research then I apologise. You didn't mention that at all in your original post, it looked like another "I'm too lazy to research this, bring it to me on a platter" thread.

Whilst the title is generic the inside of the thread was a bit more particular - with the SDS focus - and so given that nothing was out there I'm not really sure of the point of putting "honestly I've searched please don't kill me" because this is my 3rd device I've played with and used xda for and I know how petty a lot of forum members can be, it simply wouldn't make a difference.
The SDS thread is naturally where I started but has extremely limited info for aosp rom. The what is the best rom threads you posted are largely redundant given the lack of information or type of experience they're looking for is provided. Most are a waste of everyone's time and given how quickly development rakes place even if they were relevant they could still quickly be outdated.
Your tone in your first reply suggested that the answers were blindingly obvious and even a moron like me could find them with the most primitive of searches. Instead you've just admitted that no one really knows and it therefore was a valid question - a bit more thought before posting could go a long way.

The point of telling people you've done some research is so that they don't assume you're lazy. Sadly, most people ARE lazy. SDS focus? You mention it once, in passing.

And you were hoping to create the "What is the best ROM" thread that wasn't a waste of everyone's time?

Right, for your generic "Which is the best ROM" question. There's heaps of them out there already and none of them answer it because it's such a subjective question.

I like how you're trying to pretend your whole first post was all about SDS. Sure, it totally was. My bad.
Liquid Smooth ROM, no doubt! It's perfect! I haven't had any crashes and glitches yet!
I would prefer the Slim Bean JB ROM but, the camera doesn't work (build 5). Once the camera issue is fixed, I am going to revert back to Slim Bean JB
Hi all, I'm the OP for the Grand ROM Survey (TW and AOSP) for the N7100.
57 ROMs and 160 versions selectable.
I'm requesting your participation so that there is enough data to objectively answer the question "popular" and "best" as there is a scoring feature that allows ROMs to be ranked.
Please submit as many entries as you wish based on the ROMs and versions you've tried.

Thanks !!!!

ART Runtime - good or gimmick?

I know most people are probably still using either 4.3 or maybe even 4.1.2 but for any of you who are using KitKat, have you tried using ART runtime for any length of time? If you have, have you seen any benefits and/or negatives? I know there are going to be apps that don't work well with it but haven't been brave enough to try it for myself yet.
Over on the Nexus 7 forums there are people who are claiming using ART is getting them a few extra hours worth of use, I wonder if that will translate to our S3?
I also don't know enough about it yet to know if there are any potential negatives to trying it?
You don't really need a new thread for this. There is tons of information out there, much on these forums that will tell you everything you want to know about ART.
^^^^^^ +1
Crespo,
OK. Let me rephrase, I'm not asking about art in general. I know there are a lot of sources explaining it but I've searched and haven't found anything specific to my t999 tmo s3. In reading threads of specific devices it seems like the results are device specific, that's the reason I made the thread. If the only thing you have to say is 'why did you make this thread' then why bother responding at all?
I've tried it with my s3 and I felt it was more responsive and smooth in doing specific tasks comparing it to dalvik, but I never run aosp/cm too long to test the battery usage between the two

If you want to see performance of ART on T999, Flash a 4.4.x rom and see for yourself.
Personally, what @ktoonsez said is good enough for me.

Alright I'll admit, you're right.
Thus, in that case. What I have to say now is: why don't you just try ART for yourself and see if you like it. How hard is that?
Also, to be 100% honest, the main reason I posted here is because I'm finally sick of not being able to post in the dev forums - this is my 10th post. Hallelujah.
I hear what you're saying about the low post count, not great to only read and not respond.
As for trying it myself, I did after posting this and I don't know if its my phone or the rom I'm using but when I selected art and it rebooted it went through the boot animation and then stayed on a black screen. I don't know if I didn't wait long enough or what happened. On my nexus it reboots and then takes a long time to optimize the apps but it never rebooted to a blank screen. I'm not trying it again so I guess in the end this really was a pointless thread. Maybe when google gets to android 5.0 it'll be working.

With all the searching you claimed to have done, how'd you not come across any literature that states you need the correct version of gapps for ART to work?
I am sorry you had issues. I use SlimKat with KT747 Kernel. I had no issues switching back and forth until cows come home. (Yeah gotta reboot each time.)

Using pa gapps, same as I'm using with my nexus and they work fine. I'm using cyanfox rom so not sure if its the rom or my specific phone. You're new here but you really aren't helping much .
"You're new here but you're not helping much?" Are new people supposed to be the biggest help? I don't get that one
But hey man don't be mad at me because YOU'RE the one who's been around the block, yet you make a thread that is basically the same as someone making a thread about nightlies just to complain that it's broken.
I guess I should say to you: you've been here a while but YOU aren't helping much.
See that would make sense because someone who's been here a while knows better than to make a thread for a silly question like this. That's all I'm saying.
But anyway. Good luck with all that. Wish I could help but I'm new here guys.

Lollipop Camera Question

Can the M8 shoot Raw in lollipop ?
If yes can someone post a sample of both front and rear camera.
Need Samples to extract data to fix raw for the non GPE m8 still on kit kat
thanks .
Bumping as I have the same question.
I am running CM12 nightly based on Android 5.0.2 and I would love to be able to shoot RAW with my HTC ONE M8.
I'm a photographer, and as far as I know the cameras on phones don't have that... RAW capability because they lack the sensor that RAW uses. However it seems theirs an app that does its best to use the sensors on the camera to get RAW (Just not as good as a standard camera)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flavionet.android.camera.pro
download it and give it a try?

I guess this app won't work. I wont risk my money just to try it.
* Requires Android 5.0+ and a fully compliant Camera2 implementation. Currently only LG Nexus 5 and Motorola Nexus 6.

Thats true, you could always get a refund but... its iffy. I'm currently beating on that HTC hasn't implemented a RAW update.

Raw capability is nothing to do with the sensor! On any camera or phone! It just means the device stores the data created by the sensor as it is captured, rather than post processing the output and compressing it to a jpg file!

"Thanks" for bumping a thread that has been dead for 9 months, so you can not-answer the questions posed by the OP.

You are welcome - Maybe now it will get answered!
This is the problem with forums around the interweb... Threads that are left open with incorrect information in them - Is it any wonder people struggle to find the correct information they require. Or spend hours reading multipage threads that don't help.
I also hate it when forum lurkers jump on people for not using google - It's usually google that brought them their in the first place! If you know the answer already exists, link them to it, if not keep the sarcasm to yourself! Or at least give them a specific search term to use in google!
If someone in the street asked you where the nearest post office was, would you feck them off with a 'go search google', or would you help them out??? If lots of people asked you this question obviously there is a problem with signage. Its way to easy to be flippant when sat behind a keyboard and monitor! Treat people on the net the way you would in person!
If the thread is too old to reply to, it should be closed! If it is solved it should be closed! If not, which it isn't, keep your waste of characters to yourself! My post may well be late, but it was factual and OT if not an answer to the OP, it was correcting a misconception of the OP that RAW capability is something sensor specific, when infact it is software and memory speed/capacity specific!
RAW capture is basically that, your saving the 'raw' data stream as it came from the sensor, and not a compressed and lossy version/interpretation of that data! For that you usually need high speed and fairly large capacity RAM/storage.

"Forum lurker", that's funny. My credentials speak for themselves as a helpful member of this community.
I never said anything about using Google, so you seem to be making up stuff in your head. Or incorrectly transposing your some other previous negative experience onto me.
You're getting far too defensive. I didn't insult you or call you names (which is more than can be said for you - the irony in your "hiding behind the keyboard" statement). I simply pointed out, entirely factually, that you dug up an old obscure thread, and then didn't even answer the main question posed. I tiny bit of sarcasm with the quotes around "Thank you" but that's it.
Its not anything I would shy away from saying to someone's face IRL.
And expecting someone to use some common sense when posting is hardly asking too much.

I did bring up some generic forum fails, and those comments admittedly were never intended to be directed at you personally.
For that sir please accept my apologies.
I had been trying to find something and had spent a few hours trawling threads to no avail. I have been a member of many forums going back almost 20 years, and all too many times have I seen long term members being hostile to 'new' or less knowledgeable people because they can't google - well google is now over run with search results from forum threads that lead nowhere because of this very attitude. Perpetuating the problem!
It was the thing about the thread being old, I've seen it many times before. SO WHAT, its old!
Isaac Newtons theories are old, but if someone today found something that required a correction, do you think they wouldn't bother?
The information I added to this 'old' thread is relevant and may be even educational to anyone else who may stumble upon it.
Maybe admins should automatically lock threads older than 3 months?!?! Would that be a good thing - Probably not!
I will leave it at that now, and be sure not to post on here in anything less than a current thread!
