[WORKAROUND] [AOKP/CM10.1/AOSP] In call Low Volume Fix - Galaxy Grand Duos i9082 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

This is a workaround for the annoying volume bug in AOKP and CM10.1 ROM for Galaxy Grand.
This workaround will work on any ROM and any phone that has a similar bug.
Bug - The in call volume is really low and as of now we need to press 'volume down' and then 'volume up' to get the max volume in call.
Workaround - Use an automation software to do this work for you everytime you receive/dial a call.
I use 'Automagic Automation' for my needs. (I like it's user interface better than Tasker's). This will work with Tasker too.
Automagic Automation - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.gridvision.ppam.androidautomagic&hl=en
Tasker - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm&hl=en
Below is a screenshot of what happens. (The Flow)
Explanation - As soon as I pick/dial a call, my Flow first decreases the volume and then increases it with a gap of few milliseconds automatically without the need to press the hardware keys to do so. (I tested it only for the calls received on the phone, not when I dial a number, was out of balance to test for outgoing calls )
EDIT: Works perfectly for outgoing calls too. Tested.
Note - It only works this way and not if I directly increase the volume to max. The time gap is also important. Otherwise it fails.

Not sure mate. It runs as a service in the background.
Being on CM10.1, I don't really care about battery usage too much. CM10.1 has a very lasting battery life. Moreover I have automated almost everything on my phone. So automagic automation is a necessity for me.
This method will work with Tasker too, if you wanna try.

There isn't any APK file to directly install to fix incall volume mate.
You have to make either a "flow" in Automagic Automation (u can use the above screenshot as a guide).
Or make a "profile" in Tasker to do what i have explained above.
I have updated the links to the apps in OP. These two apps are Automation apps for androids. You can use Google to read more about them. Tasker is more famous among the two.

Sorry, I tried searching through the app to find a trigger that entertains this event, but was unable to find it in Automation Automagic. Maybe Tasker has some trigger event that might be helpful. I don't have it installed so can't help with Tasker.

No need for Tasker. I don't like tasker either.
Yes there are alot of things that I have automated on my phone using Automagic Automation.
Anything and everything that I do everyday on Phone, I have automated them.
Example - My Wifi is switched on as soon as I get inside my house (location based).
As soon as I leave the house, Wifi is switched off and mobile data is switched on. Brightness is set to max too.
Etc etc.

U should update ur op with some useful tweaks....

This thread is just for fixing this particular bug in CM10.1.
My automation flows are for another thread some other time!

hi
do you do that?
During a call, press the handsfree function, you can take it off and volume up!
I would be happy!

Look a few posts up. I have posted a screenshot of a trigger that "might" work. After the trigger, put actions just like in the OP. I haven't tried it beacuse i rarely use Speaker Mode.

Profile for tasker:

If someone would test it and confirm if its working as in the description of OP, I'll add it to the OP. I don't use tasker so i can't confirm it.

Volume+ does NOT work with Jelly Bean for the external speaker. Do a search on google for volume+ and it will bring up the website, where the dev states JB does not let you modify the system sounds to the external speaker...
"Sort of, but it's not good news I'm afraid.
It seems Google have completely removed the ability to attach the Audio Effects to the system output. I knew they were removing it but I assumed they would replace it with something better but it seems they removed it without offering an alternative. This means Volume+ no longer works for boosting Ringtones/Messages/E-mails, etc.
Will it ever work? No idea. Depends if there's any way around it."
Which sucks, I wanted JB, oh well, maybe google/samsung will eventually fix this stupid problem
But custom kernels/roms will.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I don;t know if this problem is exclusive to Galaxy Nexus. it was quite low in ICS aswell but Volume+ was a big boon.
Now according to developer of Volume+ and others like the developer of Awesome Beats it might be difficult to address the issue due to the implementation of JB by google,
If so, then JB is useless as the primary purpose of a phone is its phone features of which a reasonably audible ringtone is a basic need.

For trinity, you have to also install TKT, the app that lets you control settings. There is a High Performance Audio that you can enable, and move it all the way up to 3 from 0...however I have not noticed any increase in volume by doing that. Also played around with volume+ paid version, and awesome beats, with intermittent success.
I am currently using liquid JB beta 1. The volume seems to be right on par without modifying it. Pretty good battery life compared to cm10, and runs much smoother.

Here is a simple solution that actually works for increasing the Ringtone Volume part of the Problem facing the Jelly bean GNex.
Since it's fairly clear, none of the apps increase the dismal Ringtone volume on Jelly Bean or ICS for that matter, I took a simpler more direct route. Using the RingTone maker app, I opened the Ringtone I wanted, Increased the Volume by +3 (They let you go to 5 but it is to distorted for my tastes) and Viola! A ringtone, easily twice as loud and one that I can hear when the phone is in my pants pocket, even on the City streets. Problem Solved!
This will also work on Notifications and Alarms too!

Well that's a good idea. The volume complaints I've heard fall into several categories.
1. Music volume through the speaker: There are umpty-zillion mods to "fix" this, none of which are necessary. All you have to do is open whatever equalizer you're using and push all of the sliders up about 6dB.
2. Audio volume through headphones: There are several good kernels with volume enhancements that fix this.
3. Ringer volume: This is the one that seems to never get addressed by any of the sound patches. I'm glad you have found a solution.
4. In-call voice volume: Personally I have to turn mine down or it's far too loud.
The speaker-volume problem is reportedly due to an inferior speaker amplifier component. Maybe it would be possible to get more apparent volume if someone came up with a good software compressor with attack of zero to limit the dynamic range of the audio signal before being fed to the amp. But it might add to the latency problem.
My volume issues is with media through speaker. YouTube videos for example are impossible. I do not wish to use any "Beats Equalizers" and have been wondering if anyone has found a tweak within the stock ROM itself to increase speaker media volume. Everything else is a perfectly fine volume for me.

If you don't want to mangle your system with audio patches and mods (and I don't blame you), you could try Audio FX Widget by namakerorin in the Playstore. It works system-wide as a controller for the built-in Android audio engine, so it should affect any media player that uses the standard audio stream. Just install the widget and push all of the eq sliders up about 6dB and voila, instant volume boost for media. If you don't like it you can just uninstall it, no harm done.

Do you always refer to yourself in the third party?
Anyway, I am talking about a Stock Gnex with factory Jelly Bean, you are talking about a Rooted, "mangled system" as you put it.
You shouldn't have to root your phone, apply a patch, install third party software and even boost the volume of Ring Tones, just to hear the ringer. Especially on what is their Flag Ship device.

[APP][ROOT][BETA] ButtonLED

New thread with updated ButtonLED.
Everything below this point is outdated.
Hey guys,
I've been fiddling around Tasker for the last few weeks and finally decided to create a fully functional app using it.
At this point, some of you will be thinking "Another useless, ugly, cluttered Tasker created app that does something nobody needs".
Well, then, I'll try to prove you wrong
Note: You do not need Tasker to use the app.
App Description:
ButtonLED is similar to NoLED: it allows you to have LED like notifications without actually having the LED light. However, NoLED uses uses your screen; ButtonLED only uses the hardware buttons' backlight (your screen stays off). It's customizable to an extent, with more to come depending on feedback and suggestions.
Features:
Pause for some user defined time on proximity (e.g. if phone is turned down, or is in your pocket);
Turn button backlight for X seconds, then off for Y seconds;
Should work on all devices since the user can locate the brightness file;
Notification exceptions (e.g. to ignore all notification that contain "Hello", add *Hello* to the exception list)
Logs
Compatibility:
It should work on all rooted devices. It will work out of the box (once you open it) for Samsung Galaxy Ace i devices (Galaxy Ace users will probably need to locate the brightness file), which is why I'm choosing to offer it for testing here. I'll release it in the Android Apps and Games section if the reviews are favorable. If not, I'll take their content into consideration and improve it before release it there.
Running the app:
Install, open, enable in accessibility. Done. You may need to select a different brightness file.
You may also want to customize the options.
On the Galaxy Ace i, the brightness file is located at:
/sys/devices/platform/bcm21553-leds/leds/button-backlight/brightness

Other minor modifications and fixes.

Should be fixed in v1.1. Actually, it shouldn't be happening in v1.0 since I've already included a quick check that resets the brightness to 0, but I altered a few things in v1.1 that should make it fail proof.

About the camera LED, just to make sure:
Open ButtonLED;
Select "Use flashlight ...";
Press the "✓" button;
Select "Test ButtonLED". Your flashlight should turn on and off.
If it doesn't work, and if you have Tasker (or if you can install the trial version), can you try creating a simple task that will turn the "Torch" on then off? Just to make sure that Tasker feature is compatible with your phone (the documentation says it's not compatible with all phones).
Regarding the battery, I don't see why that would happen, unless you left your phone with ButtonLED active for those five hours (when I say active, I mean turning your LED on and off), especially that nothing, battery wise, has changed from v1.0 to v1.1.
Did you flash a new ROM lately? If so, try recalibrating your battery.
For the logs, what exactly do you mean when you say they don't work?
Are they inaccurate? In that case, I fixed it in v1.2. It was a slight issue causing skipped notifications to be displayed as "processed" in the logs (e.g. if your screen is on, ButtonLED will skip a notification; v1.1 will mark it as processed in the logs, tho).
If it's something else (e.g. logs not showing up, some other issue), please specify.
Thanks for the reports
Ok..thank you so much ..

I just remembered that pushing the app using adb should give you more information about why the installation failed, so please try that.
Hi, I found this app on Tasker groups (thanks to the author)
However on my device (galaxy s2 with cyanogen10) I have no /sys/devices/platform/*-leds/leds/ and on tasker Set Light says it's not available on my device...
It's a ROM problem I suppose, because keys backlight are present (as hardware) and supported by the ROM (they turn on and there is an option to use or not use them!). Should I ask to cyanogen developers?
again thanks

Yeah, it's probably hidden somewhere else.
Did some googling and found that for the One X (running CM10), it's /sys/devices/platform/msm_ssbi.0/pm8921-core/pm8xxx-led/leds/button-backlight/currents
Other users say that /sys/class/leds/button-backlight/brightness works instead.
So you could also try looking for something similar.

[GUIDE] Getting the most out of your HOX (Inc Battery/Speed)

Over the last few weeks, I've been looking into the most productive ways of saving battery on my HOX. Please note you don't have to follow this guide Step-by-Step, you can simply pick and choose which tweaks/tips you want to use to try and improve your battery.
Some of the tricks I used, were extremely effective, others have little effect but which ever ones you choose, is up to you:
Optional (BUT MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE):
Click to collapse
Before I went about getting the most out of my battery, I made a complete factory reset, to make sure anything left from previously used rogue apps etc, were gone and werent causing issues.
First (Optional) - Get a new launcher:
Click to collapse
The first thing I did was get Nova Launcer, as I think Nova is clean, smooth and looks very similar to stock Android, which makes it easier to go from my HOX, to my Nexus 7 without getting confused. This is also great if your one of the many out there that aren't a fan of Sense. There are other launchers to choose from, so make your choice:
Nova
Apex
GoLauncher
LightningLauncher
I can only comment about Nova, which uses next to no battery.
Second - Creating some useful toggles:
Click to collapse
For this, I used HD Widgets. Create toggles for your brightness and then use this toggle to set your brightness to a point where you find it nice. I left it at 50%. Also create a toggle to FORCE SYNC.

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
HD Widgets
Beautiful Widgets
PowerToggles (Free Alternative)
Third - Disabling all / Un-used Syncs:
Click to collapse
Auto syncing in my eyes, is pretty useless, as everything re-syncs/updates when you enter it, including mail and calendars etc. So I turned most of them off, leaving a couple such as Play Updates. Then, if needsby, use the toggle widget you created earlier and force-sync when you need to.
THE BIGGEST SYNC DRAINER IS FACEBOOK, COMPLETELY DISABLE FACEBOOK's SYNCS, Unless this is important to you !
Goto:
Settings -> Accounts and Sync -> Choose each profile and un-tick any Sync's that you don't use.
Fourth - Using Tasker to its potential ! (MOST EFFECTIVE):
Click to collapse
For those of you who don't know, Tasker is an EXTREMELY powerful automation tool for your phone, which you can program to do almost anything you wish. Tasker is known to have a learning curve, but I find if you look at it logically you can figure your way around it quite simply. It works like this:
What do I want to happen
What is going to cause it
What I want Tasker to do once that has happened.
YOU CAN FIND TASKER HERE
Tasker Profile 1 - This has got to be one of the best Tasker profiles I've done yet, as it saved me pretty much 20% battery, A DAY.
Profile One:
Set the Context to - Display State ON
Set a wait period of 10 seconds
Set the Task to - Enable Wifi
Profile Two:
Set the Conext to - Display State OFF
Set a Wait period of 10 seconds
Set the task to - Disable Wifi
The wait is so that when you flick the screen on and off, to check time/date, it doesn't enable/disable Wifi straight away.
Another method of this, to save even more battery, would be to disable WiFi altogether, and then set tasker to enable WiFi by App per App basis (Such as Facebook/Browser/Youtube) etc
Bedtime Ritual?
Some Android Phones/Versions support tools to allow you to disable almost anything between certain times. This is often called "night-mode". This can save rucks of battery, but isnt useful to many as lots of people charge during the night. If your one that doesn't, either use the in-built funtions, or again use Tasker, to disable all features and functions you see fit between the times you sleep and wake up. Such as 12PM to 6AM.
Fifth - Changing to GSM Only (When no Data needed):
Click to collapse
Although I don't use this one much myself, it can make almost a 20% different in battery between GSM and GSM/WCDMA Auto. If possible, changing it to GSM only can save alot of battery:
Step 1: Tap on settings in the notification panel.
Step 2: Then tap on Mobile network and the network mode.
Step 3: Tap on GSM only.
Sixth - Monitor your battery, to check whats unique to you:
Click to collapse
Monitoring your battery, to see whats draining your battery in particular can be a very good method of highlighting, and remove rogue battery eaters etc.
The abolute best tool for this, bar non is BBS (BetterBatteryStats) which monitors Wakelocks etc to see whats eating the battery.
You can find BetterBatteryStats here.
If you like his work and would consider donating find it on the PlayStore.
Seventh - Use Push Notifications where possible:
Click to collapse
Alot of people have mail clients on their device, this can range from Exchange servers for work, to personal E-Mails such as GoogleMail and HotMail. These often "poll" for updates every so often (usually 15 minutes) this is an absolute killer for battery, luckily, alot of them now support "Push" notifications. If this is an option for you USE IT.
Eighth - Ditch Un-used widgets:
Click to collapse
Widgets are very useful for most users, and alot of people use them. It is also one of Androids main differences to its competitors.
Ditch the Widgets you rarely use, or those that don't make much difference and could be removed in exchange for simply opening the app.
For example FaceBook's widget in my eye's is useless, its just as easy to go to the Website/App and check their. Lets be honest here, people are on FaceBook multiple times a day, whats the use in the widget?
Also, if your like me, everything is kept on the one page, remove all other Widgets from other pages if possible.
Nineth - Disable Haptic Feedback:
Click to collapse
Haptic feedback can be an absolute killer to your battery, and is also pretty useless. Haptic feedback basically plays a tone/vibrates each time you press something, so typing "Hello" would cause it to vibrate 5 times. Whats the use? Surely you know when you've pressed it, and also LOOK AT THE SCREEN? to see if you've pressed it.
To Disable haptic feedback:
Haptic Feedback, along with sound feedback, is located under the "Sound" options, at the very bottom. Disable one or both and you will see an improvement.
IF THERES ANYTHING ANYONE CAN ADD TO THIS. LET ME KNOW.

Ta, and gutted
Dno whether to bother with performance tweaks.
Especially all the moaning that goes on when you try and ask/help people.
A few points from me too..
1. Update the apps regularly. The updated apps usually have bug fixes which helps not to drain your battery fast.. It's not so noticeable,,but it works!! :thumbup:
2. Get the maximum signal strength. Battery tends to be more energy sucking while it constantly search for network coverage.. It's not possible for constant travellers,,but try to keep the phone atleast at home where you can get the best coverage..
3. Keep the battery cool. Ofcourse most users love to play games and do much hard usage with their devices,,but remember that a hot battery drains fast.. So keep an eye on the battery temperature..
4. Keep an eye on the autostart apps that unwantedly start up from the boot. Rooted users could disable these apps to minimise battery wastage
(needs suggestions on apps to do so)
5.Last but not the least,, DELETE unwanted apps

check your inbox mate should be roughly 2/3rds the original size now
Would also be good if there's a little warning at the GSM section that selecting it will deny you 3G/HSDPA speeds for the sake of battery
But since this is posted in XDA, and I would assume that anyone here would have been rooted at least, would you want some suggestions for root users? Since performance tweaks mostly can only be done through root access (mostly)

Activator like app on android

You'll have to change your launcher for that sort of functionality.
For example, Nova Launcher Prime (paid version) gives you access to Gestures like swipe up, swipe down, double tap, triple tap, two-finger swipes etc.
You can disable double tapping home button opening s voice in s voice settings. You can use Home2 to choose a new action for double tap.

I will admit, I am a total newbie to Android. I just switch from ios a couple days ago.
Thank you both for your tips on Nova and GMD Gesture Control. Any preference or tips on which ones (if there are others) are your favorites?
Does changing the launcher affect the performance of the phone? In the iOS world, skins have a magical way of slowing this wayyyy down. Sorry if this is already obvious to everyone else. Thanks for your tips.

Thats because sorcery has to be worked and inject around the ios machinery. This is basically turning off one program and turning on another. Any performance problems will be because of the coding of the launcher, and that willl be while you're actively using it (looking at home screens and app drawers) but not while running apps.

Android destroys the competition? Many at certain aspects, but I can't say so for an activator equivalent in android. Activator allowed remapping of hardware buttons to music controls. Where is this? Why can't I hold down both volume buttons to pause? Why can't I long hold volume up to skip to next track even when my phone display is off? Where is this simple functionality that I loved for music on my iPhone? Because... I just love to have to turn on the display to pause or play music. If it exists, and I haven't found it, maybe I'll agree with you.

Because it's likely nobody cares enough to make it happen. Lack of some "features" in comparison, esp when looking at mobilesubstrate hooks, doesn't somehow make one better or worse or "omg how suck it's open so where is it????"

Activator for iOS was so good.
People, we are looking for an app that can perform actions (like toggling airplane mode / bluetooth / wifi /...) when you press / long hold / short hold / double press / tripple press / .. a physical button on android phone, like the home button or sleep button..
That's what activator does on iOS. And also, you can press your button and make your customly chosen action happen from anywhere, so it doesn't matter on which app.. you are while doing it.
It was great on my ipod touch and it surprises me that there ain't such app for android :silly:
So... anyone found anything yet?

Nope.. there's nothing. The closest thing I found was an app called VolumeNext. But, it gives you crap control, only preset remaps that only do what the developer wanted.
I'm going back to iphone soon as my contract is up. I guess android devs don't use their phones to listen to music. Oh well.
Try "gmd control" from playstore or lmt (xda)

It's really a shame that no one has figured this out yet. It's also disappointing to see the ignorance of android users that have obviously never touched a jailbroken iOS device. I'm a seasoned user of both, and currently use a nexus 5, coming from a 4, and 4 iphones before that. With that said, not having a activator equivalent for android just downright sucks. I want to be able to hold my power button and get to voice search or google now, double click to turn on flashlight, hold volume up for next track. Google now is superior to siri, unfortunately having to look down at your phone to unlock and swipe is a crutch.
Can someone please please get this working... will this have to be a modified kernel?

DashClock Sleep Extension for CM/AOSP based ROMs

So, I had an idea this afternoon that it would be convenient, if you are a DashClock Widget user, to be able to put your phone to sleep via a DashClock extension. If possible, this would help reduce wear and tear on the power button, and allow you to put the phone to sleep quicker than other options.
I turn the screen on to check various statuses using dashclock, and frequently just need to put it back to sleep again, so something like this, I thought, would be nice to have, as it allows me to more quickly / conveniently put the phone back to sleep after checking, without having to use the power button.
The problem is, Google does not expose the PowerManger "goToSleep" method to non-system apps for security reasons.
However, if we have root, I can make it a system app by signing it with CM keys, in order to be granted the necessary permissions to pull it off. This is why this is a CM/AOSP specific "system app" extension. I'm not sure if it will work on other non-CM based ROM as a result, but if you'd like to try, please do so and report back. If the extension doesn't appear after flashing, or it force closes upon clicking, this indicates it is not compatible with your ROM.
If interested in using, this is what you will see once installing:

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
Attached is a signed zip to flash via recovery (since it needs to be pushed to /system/app).
Figured others may find it useful as well, so thought I'd share.

Ah, didn't think about that, as I don't use a pattern lock.
This is a limitation of how DashClock extensions work. Since the original "intent" (no pun intended) is to click an extension, for which DashClock unlocks the screen and it takes you to the particular app (email, weather, etc), all you can pass to the DashClock API in an intent to launch a particular app, activity, etc.
I'm assuming the same happens for you when clicking any other DashClock extension when having a pattern / pin unlock in place?
I can't put the phone directly to sleep as a result, but rather, have to instruct DashClock to launch an intent (which then unlocks the screen), and the intent issues the goToSleep method. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a way around it, given DashClock's primary purpose for extensions.

Interesting.
I wanted to hedge my bets and play it safe by assuming only CM. Thanks for the confirmation. I'm guessing in light of this, that perhaps any non-stock ROM (AOSP based) ROM that shares similar keys may work.
If you attempt to install, and you simply don't see the extension listed in DashClock, or it force closes when clicking, this is most likely a result of lack of permissions to execute.
If anyone tries running on any other ROMs, please report back, and I'll update the OP.

For some reason, Nest continues to keep their API private, so that third parties can't easily interface with it, but I found some documentation out there where someone has reversed engineered much of the API calls.
Based on the documentation, I put together a little Nest DashClock extension to display various statuses as reported by my thermostat, which I think is pretty cool.

Wish I could. Given the API is private, I am using a PHP server the extension makes calls to, and the PHP server calls Nest, using my hard coded device ids, username, password, etc., which returns back to the phone some JSON formatted data to parse. So, right now, it's not "portable" in any way.
If I get a chance, I want to try and think of a way to make it more universal, but right now, it is very specific to my environment.

Completely understandable.
Thanks!
If anyone running AOKP and has tried this can let me know if it works, I'd like to compile a running list of known working ROMs.
Thanks!
JsChiSurf, How did you make your dashclock look that AWSOME Jellybean style?
- there is no line under the clock so the extensions becomes right under it.
- the clock is in the middle and not aligned to the left side.
You have to explain me how youve done that!
Thank you!!

Ha, funny thing is, the removed line is a by-product of the mod I did here for conditionally removing the clock when installing DashClock on the homescreen. Since it doesn't make sense to have the line when the clock is gone, I just removed the line all together.
The clock being centered is just an option in the 'Advanced' settings for DashClock directly.
So what should i do to remove the line? ( No contact for the extension you made in this threade) , do i have to still download your mod?
Thanks so much!
Very nice. You should upload it to the play store. You'll get a million downloads.
I wish I didn't have to swipe it to unlock it when the clock is minimized.

Unfortunately, since this has to be a system app, it's not something that can be put on the play store.

Unfortunately, I can't override the behavior of DashClock itself, and since this is what it does for all extensions, I don't have the ability to do anything different for the sleep extension (though I wish I could).
