Verizon G2 - LG Optimus G (International)

Looks like most major carriers will get the G2. It is at the top of my list right now so i thought i would pick the previous generations brain on the Updates and Source release's for the phone. Anyone mind sharing some input on how often and fast Updates for this phone roll out and the delay time for source code. I come from HTC and with their poor attempts to fix my Thunderbolt and the fact they canceled any future updates for the One S just a few weeks ago i have decided it will be a long time before i choose another HTC device. (Although i would LOVE a phone with front facing speakers.)
If you know anything about Updates / Source please post your idea of speed development and source releases and your carrier.
Thanks in advance!

They suck... for short. 9 months this phone is out same as Android 4.2 and they still can't update. Go for Sony or wait for the the next Nexus 5. Better the Nexus 5. As good as the G2 will be... updates suck...... i don't know if i.will keep the G much longer, i rather choose the good updates and custom Ron of the Z or the ONE. Samsung sucks as well... they only update the good phones which are 2-3 of 100 they out every year. The S4 the S3 and the Note 2 and there are/will be far better phones in a couple of months. The next Sony, the next Nexus even the Note 3 will be better except for the Exynos which sucks in support for custom Roms.

Sony good with updates? Pffft good luck with that.
If you want updates go for a Nexus. I wouldn't go for another phone if updates bothered me that much.
Luckily the Gs stock ROM is blazing fast, so I don't see the need for a big update. But that's just me.

Yes. I know last year's Sony phone were not that updated but that's more because Qualcomm does not support the S3 chipset anymore and won't give drivers. But they made steps in the right direction in 2013. The level of custom ROMS is healthy, and they are stable (compared to other), they have their own AOSP project.... i don't see why he shouldn't choose the future Sony Honami with the 800 Snadragon and 20 MP camera, over the LG G2.
I know the Nexus will always be the best choice but sometimes you want a little more storage or better camera, or... so you should at least look at others.

I didn't even talk about the G2, I just said Sony updates suck. That's a fact. I know that since muy last two phones were Sony...
Sure, Honami will be a beast. But if I were concerned about updates I wouldn't consider it.
That's just my opinion based on my experience.

I'm one of these fan boys but from now on only nexus because it will always be the best supported device, on the software part at least!

I hope one day we will see a Sony nexus, this will be awesome!

No. I'll still buy a Sony as long as it's the best looking phone. I don't need updates right away for a device that I use for sms, email and phone calls.
But it needs to look good, I don't want to think 'ew this thing is ugly but at least it runs the latest android version' every time I pull out my phone.
If updates are so important to you, why didn't you buy a nexus in the first place?
It has nothing do with 'fanboys'.
Some people have different priorities in a phone than you.
My boyfriend is still satisfied with his sola even if won't get jb.
My little sister hasn't even updated her ray to ics because she doesn't even know what it is.
Some people just want their phone to work the way it did when they brought it. Which is why they bought it in the first way.

The new Nexus looks ok (it is LG but what the hell) as for the previous which was Samsung..... ewww!
It probably wouldn't put me off too much.
I've had an Arc S and the Xperia S, and loved them both. I'm also capable of flashing ROMS, so as long as theres dev support, I wouldn't be bothered if Sony are waaay behind release schedules.
The new Yuga looks awesome, although I'm not due an upgrade till October next year.
Although, after buying a Nexus 7, and getting the 4.2 update about 10 hours after Google released it, I definately consider a Nexus device as my next handset.
Not really. i like sony devices somehow and i'm inclined towards buying them always. i had couple sony devices and loved them all. i like arc s but due to half gb of ram i moved to sxs. i'm not on cm10 by fxp and loving it. though it has few bugs i really do not miss official updates. one thing i like about sony is they support open source projects. i'm waiting for xperia yuga and thinking of waiting till xperia nexus. :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:

Same here, if Sony had pushed a fixed ics, especially for UK generic then I would have happily sat back, waited for jelly bean and probably bought another Sony next summer, I don't need the latest update straight away, but I do need a phone that works. So after the way Sony treated me, not now.

I don't care about the updates.
Well... Right now I'm testing a JB ROM and it's great and everything, but I prefer stock Sony ROMs. When official JB gets released I'm going to flash it over the CM10 based ROM I have now. And also I'm thinking that my next phone will be a Sony Xperia Odin xD
Maybe Sony is going to fix all its mistakes next year, or maybe they're going to make the same bad decisions about updating their phones but the hell with that, I'm happy with my XS right now!

No need for official updates, when you've got great teams like FXP and KXP
You get CM, AOKP, MIUI plus a bunch of stock- and custom-based ROMs with even better features than the official ROMs...
That's what you get if your device gets an unlockable bootloader and gets featured on the xda portal
Tha only bad thing, though, is no CM7...

I'm waiting for someone to port S4 camera and everything to Note. I can wait for the rest of the gimmicks
Yeah Samsung aren't too bad with updates especially considering just how much stuff they add to the aosp Android base. They add an awful lot of features and the updates may take time but they do come.

It's better to wait. Android 4.2.2 on the GS4 is very, very laggy in some situations (browser, gallery)
Lag is no big deal, custom ROMs should take care of the lag if not just the launcher - if that's the typical touchwiz lag we're talking about. Happy with 4.1.2 itself though, no rush.

It seems that lagg is one of the features of android
Note II doesn't lag for me at all, it's extremely fluid (on Nova launcher).
CM 10.1, with android 4.2.2, runs absolutely fine on my Note 2. The rom is good enough for daily use. I don't think the SG4 is the right reference at this moment.

Unfortunately, seems that samsung is more interested to develop a system full of useless things (air view, s-health, smart stay and soooooo on) than a system that performs like pure google experience roms. I used a Nexus 4 for a couple of days and the smoothness was excellent, like iOS or WP. On Touchwiz roms even the messages app is laggy.
It's a shame that AOSP roms on the note 2 aren't so good (no s-pen support and, more important, worse battery life)
According few twitter friends (note the rumour tone) samsung must release a beta 4.2.2 in few weeks, and a full release soon before next Google IO (where we will saw Android 5 just to keep us dreaming again)

Keep calm and read.
Beyond the "having the latest" there isn't a lot to add from 4.2. I mean, phones don't have the multi user (WTF Google!) and for the user it basically adds the notification buttons, which we already have, only now in a different page of notifications.
Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but the only thing to hope for the 4.2 in the Note is whatever Samsung adds to make it "suite".
Samsung fares much better than my previous phone manufacturer motorola in terms of updates.
When I bought the razr which supposedly is promised to be upgradable to ics... It was on gb out of the box. Took them 2 years to push out ics.
And even then it was so laggy even with a clean reboot with cache and everything wiped.
And the razr was their flagship phone.
Reason I left Motorola is its slow updates.

Galaxy Nexus Gets Updated GPU Binaries, To Breath Life into the Two-Year Old Phone

As always, XDA is up to some good stuff with a new release of Android now available. Some developers are finding what appears to be updated binaries for the GPU that’s inside the Galaxy Nexus. KitKat was announced last week, and surprisingly, Google decided to drop support for the Galaxy Nexus. It’s surprising because KitKat can run on devices with 256MB of RAM, which the Galaxy Nexus has a full gigabyte of RAM available. We’ve already seen numerous custom ROMs flowing out for KitKat on the Galaxy Nexus. And it’s not just for the GSM Galaxy Nexus, but also the Verizon (Toro) and Sprint (Toroplus) versions.
It appears that Texas Instruments have updated the GPU binaries for the Galaxy Nexus. Now, Google may not have known that TI was going to update it or Google may not have told TI that they had given up on the two-year old device. But either way, developers are hard at work building an updated kernel that might help solve some of the graphical issues with KitKat on the Galaxy Nexus.
If you’re one of those many people out there still rocking the Galaxy Nexus, and not wanting to give it up just yet. It looks like you might get Christmas a bit early. As the new GPU binaries should definitely help out the Galaxy Nexus. Although, if you’ve held onto it this long, you’re probably due for an upgrade, since the device was released in November 2011. Hopefully this will help people get a long a bit more until the device finally chokes.
This is another reason why we love the developer community around Android. You won’t find a developer community like this behind the iPhone or anything iOS related. Back before I started here at AH, I had a couple of devices in which the manufacturer had given up on the device, but developers had continued to support it for years. Which was quite nice.
Is it real? It would be a big deal !
Do any ROM developers confirm it yet?

I think you guys are being a bit melodramatic. You have a perfectly functional tablet that doesn't have any outwardly obvious bugs or other problems. I bet you use it with no problems. Sure, it's nice to have the latest update, but it's not like you have significantly outdated software that limits your usage of the tablet. And should 4.4 land on this tab (for the record, I think it will), you guys will be happy for all of about 5 minutes and move on with your day. And of course as soon as a new minor update drops, the *****fest will begin again.
I am running custom build 4.4.2 on my Galaxy S4. Outside of some UI tweaks and ART, it brings nothing significant to the table.
Thats the attitude HTC had just before they started losing tons of money

There are many reasons why HTC is failing, but if this is even a reason, it's an insignificant one. Samsung has never been truly up to date on updates, yet they are second only to Apple in the amount of high-end devices sold. Most people, myself included don't really care whether we are on the latest version. We just care that our devices perform well and do what we need them to do. I only complain if an update screws something up.
And lets be honest here: you are running the latest version of all of the Google Apps. It's not like you are stuck on Gingerbread and being on Jelly Bean does not limit you in any way. KitKat will not boost your battery life, will likely not make your device faster, and does not add any significant features that would make a difference in your usage of the device. So what's the real issue? Because it's not that you are unhappy with your tablet.

I wish that was the case but it's not. I'm on the AT&T variant, and I'm still on 4.1.2. I have screen freezes (real and documented) and battery life isn't great. With that said, I haven't piled on the *****fest. But no matter what, this device really needs to get upgraded. I blame AT&T more than Sammy, but there is no reason why I should still be on 4.1.2 with a device that was announced in June 2013 with absolutely no word on when we'll get an update (either to 4.2, 4.3, or KK). That's pretty shameful. And with no releases of any kinds of source code or device info, we have no unlocked bootloader or custom ROMs. So, I'm basically on 2013 hardware with 2012 code.

I fully understand your concern. I have the Wifi-only tab and am on 4.2. I did not experience your issues with 4.1 but I do know that others have. The thing is, problems have to get fixed, and it's a shame that you are still dealing with them. I don't know if it's AT&T or Samsung in your case that's at fault though. My point was more to the effect that I don't care for software updates just for the sake of having a slight bump in version number.

Agreed. I am on the At&t Note 8.0 variant also and I too have freezes and lag. With that being said I know that At&t and Samsung don't have the best business relationship dye At&t loyalty to Apple. So an update may or may not come. If it does let's hope that At&t don't block or rip it up like they do with all Samsung updates

I got wifi only and I get freezes. The way to unfreeze is to turn the orientation of the note to landscape from horizontal and vice versa. I really wish for an update to fix that. And Yes htc has tons of problems but I believe the slow ass updates were the biggest driver of their customers (at least those who root their devices) to Samsung. Those people are also quite influential with their peers on recommendations

Still, with Sony JB (rooted), the best phone I ever had.
It's getting old as every phone does, so where's the problem. If you like to have more support on firmware you should have bought a Google phone. Didn't know that, I did at the time a bought my Sony.
I didn't expect more from a 2012 phone.. comparing to other phones released that year our Nozomi devices are quite good, we just didn't receive proper support from neither Qualcomm (abandoned our Scorpion CPUs) and Sony (1 year to upgrade to Jelly Bean with more bugs than anything and stoped support using the lack of drivers excuse).. Today we have the same as almost every mid-range phone, but with a good camera.
720p display, 12.1MPx Camera, 1750mAh Battery, dedicated camera button and the best of sony: we can use ports from newer xperia devices. I also have a Samsung Galaxy S II i9100 and I can say that our Xperia S is way superior. In the SGS2 Android Development section there are almost no ports from newer Galaxy devices, only AOSP/CM ROMs. The ROMs that claims to have SGS4/SGS5 features are mostly lies and I can confirm that. I flashed some of those ROMs and the features they "ported" are just copies they made themselfs, not the actual port itself. I don't know if they don't port it because Touchwiz is crap or because they can't do it... but after all a SGS2 won't run SGS5 apks, but a Xperia S easily runs Xperia Z2 apks.

I don't know if they don't port it because Touchwiz is crap or because they can't do it... but after all a SGS2 won't run SGS5 apks, but a Xperia S easily runs Xperia Z2 apks.

can you give me a link for your kernel TX-Core Ultimate Kernel 5.9
If you just buy it recently and with the standar price i bought 2 year ago, then that's a hope to lost
I mean i stick with my Xperia S and still think it one of the best around, and if you buy it couple years ago then why lost hope? Just need a stable rom for calling and play some good game? it's still work perfectly
I's just recently start to using rom cook and the experience is more amazing so why to compare it to the new phone and lost hope ?
Just move on if you want, if you want hard enough you will find a way to get out of the *lost hope* phone :silly:
No I'm not. Try the OpenSEMC-U ROM. It's fast like hell, and stable enough for daily use. But this is the last stable and fast ROM after the offical. Our's phones has got an old SoC (Snapdragon S3). The Qualcomm has stopped developing drivers for this SoC early. I just call this SoC "Blacksheep". It has so much power inside, but without good drivers...
