[Q] Screen Won't Unlock - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I am running the stock ROM, only rooted.
Sometimes when I try to unlock my phone, it acts as if I'm not even trying to unlock it in the sense that it doesn't even respond when I drag my finger across the screen. The only way to unlock it when this happens is to touch and drag an icon and unlock the screen that way (IE - open an app from the lock screen). I can then re-lock the screen and it will behave the same way again by not unlocking as if I'm not even touching the screen. The only way I have found to solve this where the lock screen reacts normally again is to reboot the phone.
The strange part about this is that in the developer options I enabled the show touches option thinking the digitizer just wasn't responding for some reason, yet I can see that touching the screen IS in fact working because it sees all the touch inputs. It just won't unlock. I can press the back arrow so it highlights the box I'm supposed to unlock inside and it still doesn't work. I just don't get it. It has done this since new as far as I can remember.
Anyone else?

I've got a similar issue, except mine is intermittent. Twice I've had the lock screen freeze on me. The only way to unlock it was to pull down my notification screen, set up a pattern for unlock, and then use that. Then I switched it back to swipe to unlock and it worked fine. I'm watching it carefully. If it starts happening more often, I'm going to request a warranty replacement.

Well, mine is intermittent as well. It doesn't happen every time by any means, just sometimes. As I said, I can pull it out of my pocket every once in a while and it does it. Do you have icons to launch apps from the lock screen? You should try that and see if it unlocks for you like it does for me.

I'm having the same issue. What ROM are you guys on?

This is still occurring and very annoying. I just got a second S4 as a work phone and it has not had this issue yet. As I said, it happened with the stock ROM, but currently I am using THIS rom. Happened again twice today.

Yea that happened to me to but since I rooted it and installed wicked v5 it's never done it again

This has to be an issue with the T-Mobile ROM, I am surprised I haven't seen other posts about it. I wonder if it's because most people have some kind of security on them and I only have the swipe to unlock with no effect? In any case, my work Verizon S4 has yet to do this, whereas my T-Mobile S4 does it at least once every couple of days.

The same thing happens to me as well. I got really frustrated, so instead to swipe to unlock I now have pattern.

Tilt 2 freezing when locking phone...

Has anyone else had the problem with the Tilt 2 freezing when locking the phone? It doesn't happen all the time; but every so often, it freezes on me and I have to reset the phone to get it to work again. I haven't come across a solid answer for why it does this, so in the meantime I've reverted the locking mechanism to the Windows classic version, not the Windows default version that comes set on the phone. I do like the idea of the sliding unlocking mechanism, but I don't want to deal with the freezing. Is there a fix for this problem?
You are not the only one. I was wondering if it was S2U2.
I have been leaving my phone unplugged over night the past two nights to get a feel for the battery life. When I go to wake the phone in the morning it was either a blank screen or just the title bar before it froze. I had to reset to get the phone to work again.

I've had bad experiences with S2U2. I had installed S2U2 on my 8525, and I ended up having to do a hard reset. One day, after having to power down and restart the phone, it just wouldn't load. It got stuck in start-up mode. I don't plan to use S2U2 again. I'm not sure if the slide mechanism that comes standard with the Tilt 2 is related to S2U2 or not...
I am wondering if it is a conflict between the NEW WM lock slider and S2U2. I have a corporate exchange, so I have to use the PIN access.
I have the PIN set to appear in one hour if not in use. However, when using the WM slide locker, it ALWAYS reveals the PIN pad. If the PIN access did not appear after every WM slide locker, I would use it.
I changed the settings in for the WM lock to use the classic - thus eliminating the WM slide to unlock.
I will leave it OFF the charger tonight and let you know the results tomorrow.
Switching to WM Classic for the lock screen seems to work.
The screen did not freeze when I went to turn off the alarm this morning.
So the solution to use S2U2 is to change the Lock screen on your device from Default to Classic.

Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, I've done the same thing: switched from default to classic. Thanks again.
Screen Unlock Freezes on Tilt 2
I too had this problem right out of the box. I switched to the Windows Classic as prescribed. However, this prompted me to get out the hand held drill and put a small hole right in the side of the back cover. I found myself having to battle the back cover every time I needed to soft reset, plus I noted the stylus needed to be removed to properly seat the back cover upon reinstall. Now I simply pull out my stylus and stick it in my hole. STOP IT!

Screen Unlock Freezes on Tilt 2
I just recently purchased the HTC Tilt 2 from AT&T on 02/15/2010 and for a few times I can successfully use the screen lock and unlock feature but then it stops working and I have to go press the soft reset button. This is constantly a problem now. When I try to go and unlock my phone it allows me to move the little lock icon to the left or right but the screen remains locked.
I appreciate the suggestions to dumb down to the Classic mode but this is not acceptable for a brand new device. I hope HTC comes out with a hotfix for this soon! We need to make this issue known to HTC so they can begin debugging immediately. Or do I have a defective phone and I need to return my phone?

I have seen a post similar to this pop up multiple times in the past month. This guy was specifically having problems with his mail client.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=634213
Personally I have only experienced this issue when the phone was next to my engine getting 400° temps blasted on it. Its hard to say the actual cause of the problem, but it seems in ideal situations (no 2000 e-mails or excessive heat) my phone is free of any freezing or strange behavior.
*edit*
also at the end of that post another user posted a work around that seems to be helping.

After returning my first HTC Tilt 2 phone and I got a second one, I got the same problem again.
I think I found the screen lock bug for the HTC Tilt 2 that I am able to reproduce. The problem is when I enable the Owner Information [Identification information or Notes] to display when the device is turned on and then try to slide the lock icon it will not unlock the phone.
HTC, please look into fixing this bug. Thanks!
Here are the steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Press the Windows logo start key (the second key on the bottom of your phone).
2. Choose Settings.
3. Choose Personal.
4. Choose Owner Information.
5. I populated everything on the Identification tab as well as a note to contact me on the Notes tab.
6. Choose the Options tab.
7. Check mark either the Identification information box or the Notes box.
8. Click OK
9. Now lock your phone by holding down the end call button.
10. Power off your phone.
11. Power on your phone.
12. Try to unlock your phone right away by sliding the lock all the way left or right.
13. You can slide the lock icon all you want but you will never get to unlock your phone.
14. You now need to soft reset your phone by taking the back cover off and using the stylus to press the side reset button. :-(
I hope this makes it into a downloadable bug fix. In the meantime, I have disabled (unchecked) any Owner Info notifications on device power up. I really miss having this on device power up as my old 7 year old Nokia phone was able to do that without a problem.

What's the point of the lockscreen?

"Locking" the keypad on my old candy bar phone made sense - if you didn't, buttons were always pressed and people were sometimes dialed from your pocket. I can also see the case for a lockscreen on the iPhone, for example, since maybe its home button can be pressed accidentally as well. However, for the EVO and for the Pre I had before it, the only way to turn on the device is via the power button up top, which is surely not going to be pressed on accident (especially with the EVO where it's only slightly raised and must be pressed deliberately). Because of this, the lockscreen serves practically no purpose, except to add an extra redundant step before using your phone. It might be more useful if it showed all recent notifications on it webOS-style, but since it only shows the most recent one, it's not very good for that either, and it isn't a big deal to pull down the shade once you're in the phone.
So, unless you actually secure your phone with a password/gesture/PIN, is there really any point to the lockscreen?
Im going to go on a guess here but the purpose of the lock screen is , in the event that the phone is in your pocket "Granted highly unlikely" the button does get pushed another process of slidding your finger down the screen to unlock would also be needed . I believe the phone sitting in a pocket or a purse or case it would be even more difficult for the sliding motion on the screen to happen . Just an extra safe guard more or less .
You can use SwitchPro Widget to disable the lockscreen if you want.
Because its part of Android and the Evo isn't the only Android phone.
...yep.

Is there an app or a way to just use the pattern lock as opposed to the slide down lock? I'd rather just have the pattern lock when unlocking rather than the swipe screen lock and then a pattern lock.
Also no lock works like a charm.

This is one reason. The other is simply because iPhone has it and it is Android competition, there is no denying that the development tries to outdo each other.
I do understand the OP's reasoning, with the build of HTC EVO 4G, lockscreen is not necessary. On the other hand, it is advised to lock your screen with either PIN or pattern just in case you lose your device. It is part of personal security responsibility.

I'm using the latest CM6 nightly ( so i have the Vanilla lockscreen ) & if i have a pattern set, that is what i see when i press the power button, & after entering the pattern, my phone is unlocked. No need to swipe before or after.
Not sure what ROM you're using, but if it possible to use the Vanilla Lockscreen, you can probably get the same result.

Stock Sense, unrooted. If you put the pattern on you first have to unlock the screen before you can do the pattern. It is pretty retarded.
My phone's screen turns on occasionally for certain notifications and alerts, and if it isn't for the lockscreen, in the 30 seconds it takes for the screen to turn off again, i can easily butt-dial someone or do something else stupid.

It doesn't do this anymore with froyo, you can change the settings so it doesn't do the swipe only the unlock pattern or vice versa.

I too was unable to get this to work. I saw no setting to disable the slick to unlock.
you would really think it would be near impossible to butt-dial someone on the EVO, but leave it to me to prove to be the exception to the rule, I had the lock screen enabled even!!! and somehow in my pocket I called the same guy like 3 times over on the drive home one day... lucky it was a good friend of mine.
Come on, we all know why: Because the iPhone had one. If every other phone didn't have a lock screen, imagine the kind of elitist harassment we'd get from the Apple camp.
"Oh, your screen just comes on? Strange. My iPhone has a lock screen. I just swipe my finger and it unlocks, it's way cool. I can even put a lock code on it. But, no, your phone is cute. I like the little robot guy."
And so forth.

wait, what the hell...? You keep your phone in your back pocket? sitting on it?
May the Evo gods have pity on your soul... don't you know it gets its own front pocket, no keys, no coins, no lint, no nothing!

It may be different depending on which ROM you're running, but I was able to get the pattern unlock without the slide unlock with CM6 RC1 using this method:
- Settings
- Location and Security
- Set up screen lock
- Pattern (add pattern here)

Lock Screen every time I switch apps from notification menu

I did a quick search but didn't find anything on this. For whatever reason, whenever I switch apps from the drop down notification menu, it forces me to input my lock screen pattern, even when I have the lock screen toggled off. I have my settings set to auto lock after 1 min, but this happens whenever I switch apps, even before a minute has passed.
Is this a known issue? Is this happening to anybody else? Is there a fix?
Thanks.
Edit: I'm still on 4.02. It hasn't updated to .04 yet.
No one?
:T
Has this always been happening or did you install/flash something before it started happening?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
I just got my GN yesterday, and it updated by itself to 4.02.
It's been happening ever since I turned on the lock screen. It goes away when the lock screen is turned off. But it's bizarre that it would ask for the lock pattern every time I switch apps from the notification drop down. It doesn't ask for the pattern if I were to switch apps with the App Switcher button.
Really perplexing...
Hate to keep bumping this, but this is just incredibly bizarre.
Can someone test on their GN if the same happens? Turn on a lock screen input, anyone will do. I happen to have the pattern lock. And try to switch between apps or alerts from the pull down notification menu (you can send yourself an email or something, or turn on the music player) and see if you are forced to put in your pattern/passcode/etc before you can switch over.
I have to put in my pattern to unlock the phone every single time I switch apps ONLY from the pull down menu. It's bizarre. If I switch apps from the App Menu, it doesn't do this.
I don't know what's going on. Is this a "feature" of ICS? Seems a bit overkill on security. Or do I actually have a faulty phone (but it seems software related?).
Any help would be great. If need be, I'll make a video to demonstrate what I'm talking about.
I had this problem on CyanogenMod. Change the lock screen to what you want, and then reboot. It should be fixed. If you don't do a reboot for some reason it gets confused.
Yes happens to me sometimes too on both 4.02 and 4.04 stock. I don't use a pattern lock but it just fades out and when I turn screen back on it's lockscreen.
Never had this problem. That is weird. I suggest flashing a stock image and see if it still happens. Make a nandroid first of course but throw it away and make a new nandroid if problem goes away.

Yes, this solved it. Thank you! Oh, Ice Cream Sandwich.
I spoke too soon. It's back. I noticed when I toggle the lock screen off, the problem exists. But if I toggle the lock screen on, the problem goes away.
So it may be an issue with the widget itself. I'm using "No Lock" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.jraf.android.nolock&hl=en)
I'm gonna test other toggle widgets to see if it's app related.

Yes that would have been good info to have, but I am not running anything custom on my lock screen (though I am on CM) and had this same problem.
I had to reboot the phone after every time I changed the lock screen from anything to anything or I'd run into problems. When changing from no lock screen to a lock screen, I would lose notifications when waking the screen up if the notification was for the last app open.
For example, I was in the Messaging app and locked the screen, without going to the home screen first (so if I were to unlock the app would be right there). Then I received a text and notification worked. I pressed the button to wake the phone and the lock screen showed up (pattern unlock) and the notification for my new text message in the notification bar disappeared. But I hadn't even unlocked so I could get to the app yet...

[Q] Swipe unlock screen comes on even when turned off

Hello,
My Galaxy Note 2 has been doing something strange the last few days.
The swipe to unlock screen comes on in addition to any other locking screen lock mode (pattern, pin). Even if I disable "With swipe lock" under settings/Lock Screen.
The swipe screen also ignores any settings under "Lock screen options" and always comes up with the default shortcuts and camera. Which means anyone can get to my email, browser or camera without unlocking the phone.
This seems like a bug. Anyone else encountered this?

i had similar problem... the lockscreen image used to flash often.... on my stock rom...
anyways.... its not happening now on JoelDroid N2 V3
It turned out to be some stupid Homebase app that installed itself along with another app. I'm not sure which app was the offender since I uninstalled a bunch at and haven't reinstalled them all yet to figure out which one it was.

Screen Unresponsive After Unlock

So, I have a G4 for about 3 months and lately I have noticed a bug of shorts. I recently started using pattern as my default unlock method and I notice sometimes (once a day or less) that when I unlock the phone everything is unresponsive, and I mean everything. It's like its frozen. If I press the power button and unlock again everything is functional like it never happened. Anyone has any idea why it's happening? When I didn't have a lock screen I had never seen this happen so I am guessing it has to do something with the lock screen. If so, if someone has any idea how to fix this it would be appreciated. It's not like its a major issue however it is kind of embarrassing for such a high end smartphone to have problems like this one. Now that I think about there was one time that this happened while sending an instant message by facebook messenger but I don't think it is related. Maybe the app did mess the system there somehow.
I know this post is old, but I have the exact same issue on my LG G4 Verizon. Upon unlocking with the pattern, every so often the screen is unresponsive. I can still change the volume with the buttons and the slider pops up to display the change like normal. I too have to re-lock and unlock the phone to get it to be responsive again.
