need an OTG cable. Post confirmed working cables - Nexus 7 (2013) Accessories

I have an OTG cable that I have been using for the past few years on my tablet, but it appears it doesn't work with this generation of the Nexus 7.
Using USB device info app, it looks like it is finding my jump drive on the Linux side of things, but Android appears blank, so this isn't a hardware issue with the tablet.
Have you used Nexus Media Importer and have it working? Please post a link to your OTG cable.

I'm using this one on my nexus with no issues whatsoever.

I have this one too and it works on my 2012 Nexus 7. I'll plug it in my new 2013 Nexus 7 get home. I see no reason why it won't work though.

Wow only $1.50 shipped. I'm not even sure I have a need for an OTG cable, but for $1.50 I just ordered one.

Yep, I bought the one in that very link, I took it from my order history. I think I bought three of them, back when I bought my galaxy s3. Works great. I actually like that the micro usb makes a 90º turn, because you can flip the n7 over and have it naturally hang downwards, rather than straight out to the side.

What format thumb drive would it work with? I know NTFS is no good, maybe exfat?

This one works for me: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00932N46S/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i03?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Used it to mount 2 NTFS drives (one flash & one external hard drive). Need to use USB OTG Helper to mount NTFS drives.

Hi:
I use the OTG Cable from Amazon, shipping from Hong Kong on my Nexus 7 2012 and 2013--I just can't say Nexus Flo, it makes my teeth hurt. Both my units are stock and I use Nexus Media importer on each unit. I have a 64gb microsd in a microusb adapter formatted with NTFS which I use for streaming and copying files to my tablet on the run. Nexus Media Importer only supports write on Fat32 and I have small 32gb flash drives for that. You don't have to be rooted to use OTG.
As others have pointed out, Nexus Media Importer is working flawlessly on the Nexus 7 2013.

Sorry, what would I need in addition to this cable to use it with the nexus 2013?

Is there any USB OTG cable with charging that works for the Nexus 7? Trying to have the Neuxs 7 set up in my car so it can be charged and access a portable hard drive at the same time.

Not any that I'm aware of that also charge the device. I did skim this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822653 as it looked somewhat promising. I wonder if you could do OTG while wireless charging? That'd be the way to go if so.
As I wrote this post I decided to test it. Using my xbox360 controller, wireless charging stops as soon as I plug in my OTG cable. I repeat, wireless charging does NOT work while you are using an OTG cable. At least, the one I linked early on in the thread.
Kinda sucks, but I'm sure there's a good reason for it.

You will need a program, this is what I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount

Is there an accessory that can charge, connect to an external USB Hard drive, and output to HDMI at the same time?
i posted in other forum to hope for a Dock that:
1. Wireless Charge
2. Expand a TV HDMI out
3. USB port for Hard drive access
I really want the Nexus & FHD to be a Home entertainment player...maybe the dock should include a remote/ Or Kinect like gesture control app built in with the dock
Hope this comes true...it will be the best Combo for a home unit!

If you're just taking the USB cable that came with the tablet, changing it's gender and plugging something into the end, it won't work. The tablet would need to have USB Host support which this tablet does not. I believe that the Samsung USB Adapter that converts directly from the Samsung Connector to USB Female will add USB Host support (USB OTG).
Here is the USB Adapter. http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/EPL-1PL0BEGSTA

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Honeycomb 3.1 adds SOFTWARE support for USB Host funtionality. The device has to have HARDWARE support as well. This tablet does not. That is the reason that you need a special adapter that provides USB Host HARDWARE funtionality, such as the one I listed above.

Yes. There's a lot of misinformation in this thread. The tablet DOES have USB Host capability, but it will only enable it when it sees a specific resistor on a particular pin in the dock connector.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155065 for more details.
To get USB Host, there are two approaches:
1) Make your own cable with the correct resistors
2) Purchase the Samsung USB Host adapter which is now available for around $20.
Note that there are some limitations:
1) Xbox360 controllers and PS3 controllers are not standard HID devices and require kernel support not present in stock kernels. Pershoot's kernel has the necessary modules.
2) PS3 controllers must be fully charged before trying to use them. If not they will try to charge their battery from the tab and cause an overcurrent trip, disabling the port until the USB dongle is disconnected.
Also, Samsung didn't mangle the Bluetooth stack like they do with their phones, so wiimotes work.
Not working for me
Not sure if there's a specific USB setting, but I bought the adapted and it works with Chainfire's DSLR Controller no problem. I plugged in the playstation 3 remote and had no luck, nor any detection of the device. Tried running an n64 emulator to try to map the keys, no luck there either.
All of the guides seem to be using a Xoom, I'm on the brand new OTA on the GT10.1
Anyone else?

Which kernel are you running? Did you read my notes in the post prior to yours at all?
So, if i get the official USB adapter my regular wireless keyboard (Logitech Wave) should work seamlessly. Right?
I've just been using the "SixAxis Controller" app from Dancing Pixel (you can find it on the Android Market) to connect my PS3 controller to my tablet over Bluetooth. It's worked great for me (note: I use yongzh's emulators)
Hope that helps with the PS3 issues...I don't really know much about the USB adapter as I don't use it.

Most likely not. I have personally tested all combinations of MHL adapter, OTG cable, USB hubs (powered and non), splitters and adapters.
As of right now all signs point to the Micro USB port being a one job at a time thing.

Awesome! Please let us know if usb host and mhl be used simultaneously. a video review would be great!
I bought one. I ended up with a defective unit (detailed below), but the defect only seems to be mechanical with the button and not with the electronics. The seller is sending me another so I will let you know how that goes.
Anyway, my initial impression is "meh". Here is the "executive summary":
1. USB host cannot be used at the same time as MHL.
2. In fact, USB host cannot be used at all when the power is plugged in.
My experience with the unit:
1. There is a button on the front that lights up based on what "mode" the unit is in. Blue for USB host and green for MHL. There is a red mode, too, but I only saw it once and haven't been able to get back to it yet.
2. Like I said, the plastic part of the button broke the first time I pushed it. Since the seller said he would send me another, I tore the unit apart and discovered that there wasn't enough glue keeping the button in place.
3. I can't really tell exactly what the button is supposed to do. When I first plug it in to my phone without the power plugged in, I have to press the button to get my phone to recognize it. Once the unit is recognized then it goes into USB host mode and the button starts glowing blue. Nothing seems to happen if I press the button again.
4. As soon as I plug in the power (or I plugged in the unit with the power already plugged in) then the unit automatically goes to MHL mode and the button glows green. If I had an sd card plugged in and mounted when I plugged in the power, then the card is forcibly unmounted when the unit goes into MHL mode.
5. I assume #4 goes for any other USB-connected peripherials as I didn't try a micro sd or a memory stick.
I will be posting this to Amazon once I get time....

yes there is
this is the micro usb port
this micro usb port is for bringing power to the guest devices
I have a similar one without MHL and this is what it does
one regret on the one I have is that it doesn't act has a HUB, so you can't plug a sd and a micro sd at the same time and transfer data between them
is it the same with this device ?
I was thinking buying this unit. (Right now it's 37 USD)
But, does this product works with other phones? Like Nexus 4, Galaxy SII and SIII or Galaxy Note I or II?
I want to keep it when I sell my Galaxy Nexus...!
Or is it better to buy two cables, one MHL and other USB OTG? (Both will make around 16 USD)

USB OTG Cable [UK]

Now that JB is out for the One X I want to get a USB OTG cable.
Can anyone who has one tested and working for plugging into an external hard drive (a 1tb externally powered Toshiba drive) post a link in the UK of where to get one? This will enable me to transfer files, photos and videos etc from the hard drive quickly / easily.
Ideally from amazon or someone like that - I don't fancy guessing which ones will work etc, it would be great to only buy one!
Many thanks in advance
i couldn't connect it external hard drive ( i think hard drive needs more Electricity ) but it works with flash memories fine
I think an OTG cable is an OTG cable... I just tried the one that came with my USB keyboard folio case I use with my Nexus 7, which works fine with the HOX now its updated to the new HBoot/kernel.

I have a Bytestor 4gb FAT32 stick that works fine with no extra power etc, but I tried my 1TB external powered hard drive and it failed
I only just realised it is NTFS to avoid the 4gb limit for files for videos etc.
So if I install USB OTG Helper I can use NTFS? Nice - that needs Root though - how can you use NTFS drives if you are not-rooted and stock JB?

[Q] What Portable HDD works with your Note II?

Hey Guys,
Ive been meaning to purchase a portable HDD for my Note II ever since i got myself a USB OTG cable. Ive tried working my Imation Apollo 2.5" to my phone but with no luck, its been formatted to FAT32 and its only 120GB with a single partition, the LED lights up and i can hear a spinning sound but its short and runs in loops. Not sure what that means but ive tried hooking up a USB thumb drive and the wireless mouse and they both worked so the issue cant be from the OTG connector and it also works on the PC.
Anyways, im planning on heading out to the IT store in a few days to get my hands on a 500GB portable HDD. I would love to hear from you guys what brands/model/capacity works on your Note 2 so I dont end up with the wrong choice. Any input on this is most welcome.

It seems portable HDD with USB 3.0 capability seems to work with us otg on the note 2 since it uses less power, as I tried one from a friend today. It was a 1TB western digital USB3.0. Also I think by default Sammy rom doesn't support NTFS file system so I had to download a 3rd party app called Paragon NTFS to mount the hard drive with NTFS file system. It worked perfectly.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009YPYORM/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
purchased from seller: Atomic Market for around $10
It has the additional bonus of being able to accept power via its additional USB cable.
I find the Nexus 7 LTE 2013 does not need the additional power for typical USB thumb drives, but it might be needed for other devices like an external disk drive.
I find my Chromecast must have this cable powered in order to use a USB thumb drive to root and replace the android operating system.
You can save a few bucks for a cable that does not provide power if you want.
I also own this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005FUNYSA/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
(purchased from amazon seller: Digital Center(Ships From Hong Kong)
which only costs $1.49 with free shipping. It was $0.83 when I purchased it last year.
It works on the Nexus 7 LTE 2013 with USB thumb drives, but does NOT provide additional power for devices which may need it.
Can you confirm thath this otg power cable charges the nexus 7 2013 while still reading peripheral data from usb port?

I can only confirm that both OTG cables I own work on the Nexus 7 2013.
i am using one that came with my minix x5 and it works on all my android devices, but the connection is loose. i would be surprised if there was one that did not work as the cable itself is such a simple thing.
i would also like to know of a working powered option. i thought the powered cables only supply power to the accessory, not to charge the device itself.

Since you have the USB OTG cable with the additional cable for charging, would you mind testing it by:
1). Connecting a working USB device (mouse, HDD, etc.)
2). Connecting the USB power to the 2nd cable in the OTG cable
I am trying to use a BT keyboard and non-BT wireless mouse and charge the N7, but unfortunately, it drains the battery down heavily.
PS: I CANNOT use both BT keyboard and mouse AND have Wifi ON, as it interferes with the BT radio, making the keyboard and mouse lag heavily. I have created a thread on this also.
What thread is that?

I have connected a USB thumb drive. The thumb drive works with or without power attached, but it will not charge. I suppose it is built to provide the power to the attached USB device and not to the phone / tablet.

Howard
I just got a cable from monoprice and it works great.

Has anyone found an OTG cable that can be used to power a thumb drive and apply power to the Nexus 7? I'm trying to find one for when I'm traveling. I'd like to be able to watch movies and keep the device charging.

Perhaps a small powered USB hub will reduce the power drain on the N7?
Have a look at this.
Some ****ty spam prevention policies don't allow me posting an outside link.
(Seems I haven't posted "enough" to be considered "trustable"
So figure out the url below.

My y-connector from my n4 doesn't charge while using USB otg. The ability to do so is not written in the software. I'll try to locate the source and report. OTOH, the USB otg connectors from my GNex and N4 all work on my N5 and both old and new N7's.
EDIT: I just ran across this. I'm sure it's for the original N7. I wasn't even aware of it so obviously have not tested it. I did use ziddey's kernel on the N4. Still searching.
2nd EDIT: Available for N7 FLO/DEB 4.4.2. I'm running franco but will revert to stock then try this (as soon as I make a nandroid of my device).
3rd EDIT: That kernel does work to charge while on usb otg. It is a setting you choose to activate during the set-up. I just chose stock everything until I got to the power choices. I will say that although the install was successful, I came as close as I've ever come to thinking my device was bricked. After the install, the screen went black and I couldn't do anything. After about a 30 sec power button mash, everything booted back up. This video shows installation on the N5. Some choices are different on the N7 FHD. As I said above, I was NOT returned to TWRP after installation.
There is a note about altering a sys file for OTG peripherals. I only attached a flash drive and the usb_charge_mode was set to Y (I assume for yes). You may have to perform the edit if using a peripheral device.
