Phone shuts off after about 10 seconds, can't restore - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I am not new to rooting, but I have a pretty serious problem it seems. No matter what mode I boot into (download, recovery, OS), the phone just shuts off after about 10 seconds. Obviously this makes restoring anything impossible.
This is my brothers phone, and at first I thought it might be the battery, so I tried mine (i have the same phone), but it does the same thing. Also does it if plugged in. The phone is rooted, on a recent CM10.1.2 build, but this just happened out of the blue, not after a flash or anything.
Any ideas? Or is the phone toast?

Could it be the power button getting stuck down? A Few others have had that happen.

I'm not 100% sure that's what it was, but slamming in on the table a few times seemed to fix it (at least temporarily). Also, it was turning itself on after a battery pull and reinsert, so that makes a lot of sense.
Thanks a ton for your help!

Lol! I've fixed VCRs, CD players and all sorts of things with that method! Glad it worked for you!

I have the same exact problem for my galaxy s3. I opened up mine and took the button out and it is still doing the 10 second shutdown. I think it's the power switch on the motherboard. Does that sound correct anyone ?????

Could be...
I think s good test for this is to remove/replace the battery and if it turns on on its own after putting the battery back in, its likely a power button related issue.

Samsung epic won't boot past b/w samsung screen

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the correct place as this is my first time, so I apologize in advance if not. As my the title states I currently have a samsung epic 4g that will not boot past the samsung screen. The phone is not rooted and was running stock software. This phone also will not load a recovery menu as it will not boot past the samsung screen (and yes I'm aware of the redundancy). I have tried flashing older stock files using odin and I get a successful read with no errors, however when the phone resets post flash it will still not boot past the samsung screen.......PLEASE HELP I am at my wits end and open to suggestions. Thanks

Best I can say to you both is get a stronger cable if your not already using one and if you do have a cable other than the oem one then try leaving the battery out of the phone and hold the power button for about a minute to let the capacitors discharge then let it sit with the battery still out for about an hour :/ if you don't mind me asking, what happened to the phone before the issue started?
Try to Odin with the battery out.

Thanks for the replies. I am trying "the duce's" advice first, no luck yet. She had went to take a picture of the "beautiful sky" last night in the hot tub and dropped it. I immediately took the battery out and when we got to our apartment took the hair dryer (on medium heat of course) to it. I then put the battery in and turned it on and it worked! Until she decided it needed a restart and it hasn't came on since...

Must have been some kind of failure mode for hardware check then. I had the same thing with my airbag switch in my truck. Airbag light came on because the stupid bulb in the switch was blown. Almost cost me $35 for a switch instead of $1.50 at Radio Shack.

You can try a reflash, restore your previous nand backup and try again, or Odin in a prerooted ROM and start from there. But if it goes more than a minute on SAMSUNG you are done. After flashing the S will take a few minutes (or whatever boot screen the ROM has) while it rewrites Dalvik cache.
My epic is doing the same thing. It was stuck in recovery menu when I pulled it out of my pocket. Rebooted and stuck on sanding screen.

You may not have known.

ICS !! LMAO, only kidding.
I see many of you saying in many instances you needed to do a battery pull for whatever reason.
You guys know that holding the power button down for about 30 seconds is the same as a battery pull right?
This works even when your phone is totally frozen and unresponsive. I personally have known this since I had my vibrant, and have used this method several times on my GS2. I think its most Sammy phones..
anyways,, hope this helps you guys,
Its amazing how many people don't know this. Always saying how they hate having to do battery pulls and it sucks having to take out your case...yadda yadda.
But more realistically it is only 10 seconds of holding down power button: )

Just FYI guys..Its true for any modern device, phones, laptops, computers, GPS, etc all power off forcefully if you keep holding the power switch for some seconds. Its basically fail safe switch since many devices don't have removable battery anymore..
Lol. Yep I though I was the only one who didn't know I figured it out the day I rooted my GS2 back in November when I was in download mode. Got cold feet couldn't pull the battery do I hold the power button and wala. This is my fist Samsung smart phone coming from Hd2 and maybe my last until GS4 LOL.

I didn't know this tech either, pretty cool. I haven't really had to do a battery pull anyhow, phone has been running smooth on juggs since day 1 (which isn't that long ago).
This is useful for people who has a case that takes time to remove it, especially 2-step ones (like me). It saves me time by using this force shutdown method.

[Q] Permanent Reboot Bug?

Hello all. I am seeking help in trying to rid of a reboot bug that has been plaguing me for almost a month. I am not sure if this is a hardware bug or a software bug, but I had never encountered this problem before. I bought my phone two weeks after launch day.
Ok, first of all, I was on CM9 Alpha 4 for a week when my phone started rebooting itself at random times. Also, if I pressed on the power button to lock my phone, it would instead bring up the power menu. If I pressed the power button again it would reboot or reboot 1 minute later. I was getting more than 5 random reboots a day which affected my battery life drastically. Thinking this was a software issue, I used sfhubs EG30 full restore one click to go back to stock. Unfortunately, the bug still remained and my phone still had these same problems. I flashed Calkulins EL29 rom, and Blazer rom as well but the reboot bug still remains. Has anyone else experienced this or do you think this is a hardware issue? Any help would be appreciated.
By the sounds of if you might have a problem with the hardware power button
That can explain the reboots, your device might be hard rebooting because it thinks the power button is pressed in.
Any warranty on it?

Had the same issue with another phone, stuck power button can be really annoying. Just making sure though...do you have a full body case on the phone? I did that once and my case was actually depressing my power button when I squeezed the sides of it!! Just something to check.
If you decide to get a replacement, consider using the factory warranty vs TEP. I think TEP has a high deductible. Bringing it to the Sprint store so they can do the warranty for you should cost about $35. Ask about turnaround time also.

I think CM 10.1 killed my GS-III

Since December I've been running CM10 on my GS-III with little to no issues. I flash CM 10.1 mid January and even though it was an unstable nightly it was very stable.
Flashing the nightlies as they became available with no issues at all.
Then today my phone starts slowing down and froze up.
Keep in mind that I hadn't flashed a nightly in like a day or 2 do I had been using the past nightly as a daily driver.
When my phone decided to freeze I rebooted it and it booted just fine.
About 2 minutes in the screen goes black. Holding the power button it's unresponsive.
Now my phone is completely unresponsive to all button presses. I've tried the 3 button combos for recovery and download mode with no luck. I've even held the buttons for a full minute but nothing is working.
Is my phone dead or is there a possibility of resurrecting it?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
Are you positive the battery hasn't died. That would be the first thing I would check. Even if it showed it was charging doesn't mean the battery is good. I'm not trying to be insulting either by asking this. I'm a equipment tech at a large semiconductor company and you wouldn't believe the number of times the fix was as simple as turning a breaker back on when another tech wanted to replace something major. #1 rule of troubleshooting: Is there power. #2 rule: Double check rule #1. Sounds silly, but it is the easiest thing to overlook. Good luck and I hope it's as simple as a battery.

No you're not insulting by asking that. I use to record music and when something wasn't wasn't working that's the first thing we asked and re asked.
Unfortunately I do believe I checked that out. When I plug in a charger it doesn't even show me a battery charging logo.
I have noticed that when I pull out the battery and connect the charger the led turns red.
I'll see if i can't swap batteries with one of my friends and see if that helps.

Flash STOCK or different ROM (Don't forget kernel too) think the issue is with the Cyanogenmod, mine did something similar, when screen went dark it took literally 5-10 Power button presses to wake the phone up, sometimes it wouldn't respond, other soft keys only would light up, Make backup, Wipe, install, check everything, that what I would do

I don't know if you have to pay a deductible but Samsung is supposedly replacing galaxy s3 for free because there is a known defect which cause the motherboard to go bad. My friend's was a Verizon model and they just replaced it free.

Try this: plug in the phone, hold power and volume up and down for anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes and see if that works. When I got my One it was completely dead, no charge light, nothing. I was all set to return it when I found this solution in a help discussion thread. Took mine about 2 and a half minutes but it turned on.

Did you do all three at the same time? That and the amount of time that you keep them pressed is the key here. Supposedly it resets the battery. No idea about the TWRP angle.

"Both" generally implies 2. Did you press all *3* buttons at the same time for at least 5 minutes? Power, volume up, and volume down?

phone wont charge or turn on.
Hi,
I am having the same problem with my new HTC ONE. The phone ran out of battery so died, but wouldn't charge again - the charge light didnt come on, and so it won't turn on anymore. I didn't use twrp.
However I sent it to HTC Repair as they said it can be fixed under warranty and they sent it back to me in 10 days but it still didn't work. So I called up and they said send it to them again and now they said its a damage not under warranty. So they want £264 for repair! or £26 to return it. What should I do?
Is there any chance they'll fix it for free or shall I just pay £26 and try get it fixed elsewhere? I read online about how awful the customer service for the repair centre is but now its too late, they may have already purposely damaged my phone :'( I am so sad
