Do you have TWRP or CWM recovery installed? If so a flashable .zip can be found here I have tried it and installed flawlessly. Wipe Cache/Dalvik. Flash update. Reboot. Enjoy.
Edit: All your data will be preserved as well.
Hope that helps.

Are you running stock ROM?
Do you have TWRP/any other custom recovery installed? If so here are the steps:
1)Download the update.zip you want. It will probably go to your downloads folder... you can keep it there or move it to root folder if you like.
2)Reboot to recovery
3)Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache
4)Flash update.zip
5)Wait while it updates
6)Sucess! Reboot and enjoy your update!
I haven't tried the way you linked, I've only done it this way. Someone else can probably confirm your method.
Hope it helps :good:

Just flashed the new update via your method, and it worked like a charm. First time I've ever done it, and it couldn't be easier.

In my understanding, limited as it is, you need to have a stock recovery to install the OTA updates correctly. You would still be able to download them, but they would fail on install. So if you like your custom recovery, someone will usually have a flashable update shortly after release. If I am incorrect on any of this please let me know as I am still learning about all of this.

Flash it from ClockworkMod recovery
Use this guide to root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19465384&posted=1#
Install RomManager from the market then flash ClockworkMod recovery from there and flash the .zip from there
Or just wait for it to come OTA

screenshots showing update size
from all accounts so far, the update has only really made changes to the kernel. so the update would only be small.
I'm stock so I just applied it and it seems fine. No obvious changes. I tried a USB game controller and it still didn't work so I think its just the volume bug fix (although there are alot of patch files in the zip).
I don't know how to apply it manually I'm afraid now we don't have the /sdcard partition accessible via USB mass storage. Could try renaming to update.zip, putting in the root of MTP storage, booting into recovery (hold vol down and power) and see if it can be applied?

[ROM][Factory Image] 4.3 - Rooted - BusyBox

This is the factory image from Google made into a flashable zip with CWM or TWRP.
Clear cache/dalvik cache but no need to clear your user data.
Warning: CWM users have reported that the "Disable Recovery Flash" option is breaking root. Be advised to choose "No." I do not have CWM so I cannot confirm but there is no reason to disable the recovery flash because no recovery is included in the zips.
If flashing from CM10.1 or some other custom roms, you may need to clear the Clock app's data.

You should be able to install without any wipe. Some people like to clear the cache and dalvik cache but even that shouldn't be necessary.
If you get an app or two that force closes after boot then you will just need to clear that app's data in Settings->Apps
Can you still receieve OTAs from any of these?

This is a completely stock version, so I'd assume there's nothing in this ROM that would prevent OTAs from working (I'd use odex to be sure), but your custom recovery might(?) present a problem.... I'm not sure. You would most likely lose root if you install an update via OTA.
still though, why worry about OTAs? just flash one of these rooted ROM versions of the factory image...

Exactly.
Odex would essentially be completely stock, Deodex version allows for more theming options (Google it if you're interested in the difference), but is otherwise stock as well.

[Q] What steps am I missing with my install to kitkat?

To start off the kindle had an older version of twrp and had a version of ice cream sandwich. Those work correctly and it continues to work correctly after a nandroid restore.
Fast forward to now, I installed the latest twrp and flashed the latest FFF v1.5 bootloader.
I flashed this CM11 nightly cm-11-20140702-NIGHTLY-otter.zip
and flashed latest gapps gapps-kk-20140606-signed.zip
After I finish flashing everything I can setup the kindle but once I reboot it goes into a bootloop at the CM logo that results in a colorful screen. If I power off and power on it just bootlopps at the CM logo. Not sure what else I can do. Any help is appreciated.
Forgot to add. I have tried flashing Pacman rom: pac_otter-nightly-20140701.zip and I get same results as above.

U need to inform ur version of bootloader, twrp, and which ROM u r trying to flash. Let us know the name of the file.
Did u wipe before flashing?
Twrp7 can't be use for flashing JB. U ending up using JB by flashing ur old twrp and ROM? Or by flashing via twrp7?

The bootloader gets flashed 1 time and 1 time only. Unless perhaps there is an upgrade you never do this in correlation with flashing a new ROM period.

You should flash back to stock and update. Cannot install OTA over a rooted rom I believe.
However, I came from Paranoid Android and followed the advice here, and it worked perfectly. Was able to keep root and TWRP.

currently on CM13.1 nightly I'm going to follow what you did. Hope it will work
I was rooted I use this post, and the is a link in that thread to the actual zip your will need, and also you must have the updated TWRP as well. All the information is in that thread. but that is literally it.
Download update zip
Download Flashfire
download new TWRP
Back up you crap ( will not wipe SD card unless you tell it to )
Run FlashFire, set setting correctly
run it, you will already be rooted when done
set dev mode
re-flash new TWRP
PROFIT
Did you get the option "Restore boot and recovery images" when setting Flash OTA zip? I just got Auto mount and Mount /system read/write.

If you have Xposed just get Android N-ify and it's just like having 7.0
Anyone updated from DP5 / systemless root / TWRP?
And flashed zip for adaway to work.
What are the steps to update with ota zip?
Yes and everything is ok. Follow the steps carm01 suggests some post above. Its easy and at least for me everything worked. After fisrt boot you can go to TWRP and flash everything else you need.

You can get the same experience without going through the trouble of upgrading and then having to root again etc. I personally like it but we all have opinions

I used it months ago so there could be a lot of changes to it since then?
I don't believe the new notifications are there? Quick pull down? It's also nice that it takes up a GB less for system as well.
What rom are you on?
