So this is it? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

No more updates from Samsung for our Note 2. Yes I am rooted yes I know how to flash roms been doing it for years. It's just really getting on my nerves how this phone is still a beast and it's pretty much abandoned by Samsung on purpose to herd us to a new phone.
I didn't do a nexus because I was with sprint at the time but since I am gsm now all I need is a nexus with a 5 inch screen.
Sorry about the rant, but it got to me today while lurking the note 2 forums.

Where did you see that? I thought the update was going straight to 4.3 and dropping late this year?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Hope you are right, my hopes are not really that high. Guess it will be all good when I actually see the update.

Samsung sent updates or for GSII earlier this year even as the GS4 was coming out. I see no reason to fret over loss of support at this point. We should be Ok. The limiting factor frankly is T-Mobile...
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement

I think maybe one more major update, then 1 or 2 security updates.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 4

Isn't that Samsung's standard mo. I had a behold 2, then a vibrant, same update empty promises. If you want current software get a nexus. I vowed never to buy another non nexus android ever, until I picked up this note 2. I bought this phone knowing that it would never get an update. It's in Samsung's best interest to sell new phones, not update old ones

I'd be willing to bet the Note 2 gets at least android 4.4. Eventually.

Once the Note 3 drops then it will get updated,I mean hell the s2 got Jellybean but it is frustrating waiting though

According to sammobile back in March it was supposed to get 5.0 as we thought it would be called that at the time.
I doubt they would change that but who knows.

No offense but why are you saying stuff like this with no sources? It's just ridiculous... I could understand this a few years ago but not these days. Like another said, it all falls on tmobile and their addition of bloatware, testing, and then its release. And you won't see a major update until the Note 3's drops.

Nah...didn't the S2 just finally get Jellybean a few months back. They may put them on a back burner while they put their efforts into big projects like the Note 3 and Android 4.4 but they come back to these other phones after those releases. Technology is moving so fast they must be scrambling to keep up.

Android 4.3 coming to Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4 in October, no word on Note 2.
I guess we'll wait a little longer...

Have you seen the Unpack event for Note 3 today?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaBP1zLZBzY
Pranav mistry mentioned that an update is coming in October for GS3 and Note2 for Galaxy Gear. Hopefully it will be 4.3

They did indeed say October however I will believe it when I get it. I have a feeling there will be a while a whole bunch of shenanigans with "delays".

October for the international right? Dont then the carriers gotta get their hands on it?? And kit kat is right around the corner? Love this phone but I can't be 2 android version behind..thats 2 years.. google edition note 3 would be nice or im waiting to see what the nexus 5 has in store..

Yup... Very true. But at least when Sammy does release an update... We can be sure ptmr3 (and others) will do a JediX version. The only thing we'll be missing until T-Mobile drops theirs is the WiFi calling. Still with the press releases today... Everything is very exciting lol!
Did everyone see the back? Looks like a leatherish material which means nice grip. That's awesome news alone

Dude be patient! We'll all be very happy soon enough whether people jump to the Note 3 or those who keep their 2 for a while. Updates will come sooner than you think since the 3 will be released. We'll have a international ROM first then us carrier's a couple months later. Good things with happen! Be cool people! Lol

Common sense tells me if the S3 is getting it... We'll be getting it around the same time. I doubt Sammy's promoting it due to the Note 3's close launch. Yeah its rather sneaky but it makes sense, right? Good find though!

One chance.. Gs3 or galaxy nexus??

Hi.. Just got my replacment galaxy nexus maybe 2 weeks ago and im thinking "should i get the galaxy s 3.. It will cost me and extra 50euro if i want to bring my galaxy nexus back to the shop and swap for the gs3. So if you were in my shoes would you do it or? Please leave your comment on what you think

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
For only 50 eurons on top? Yeah, I'd personally go for it.
Hell of an upgrade for that money.
The only reason I would do that - for the better battery time. S3 has a bigger battery and specs are promising a long battery time.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
I can only give you the same advice I would give anyone when it comes to choosing a personal device, ROM, kernel, or just about anything for that matter.
Try both, see what fits you best. If you personally like the GS3 better, go for it. If you don't, don't. Do what makes you happy and not what makes others happy.

Galaxy Nexus (GSM) = Android updates as soon as they're available. These updates include new stock Android features, security updates, kernel updates, driver updates, radio updates, etc. Essentially, updates to everything that runs the phone.
Everything else = anywhere from 2-18 months, or never.
Wikipedia, I know: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history#Ice_Cream_Sandwich_4.0.x
Otherwise, to the OP, my previous recommendation still stands. Which device is best for you is something only you can decide, not someone else.

I love my GNEX. But if I had a chance to swap for an S3 and pay $100 on top, I would.
Hardware is better, community will be big, and the phone is much smoother and overall a lot faster in every way that I can think of.
We Canadians will be getting the 2GB RAM version in a couple weeks. I jumping on it as soon as it comes out.
And I will be keeping the GNEX since it is a very good phone still, even by the end of the year, it will still be a very good phone.

Because there hasn't been any yet. You're using a technicality. When Google finishes the next major update, it will be first on nexus phones. Besides nexus isn't about fast updates, its about having fully open kernel and rom code. That's the point. You'll never get code for touchwiz or sense framework.

4.0.1
4.0.2
4.0.3
4.0.4
And every update for the foreseeable future. Just because there haven't been any MAJOR updates (AKA, Jelly Bean or w/e it will end up being) doesn't mean it hasn't gotten every single Android update before every non-Nexus device on the market. It hasn't gotten that update yet because that update doesn't exist yet. Even so, it will get that update at least 2-∞ months before anything else, except perhaps the Nexus S or the next Nexus device(s). Most Android phones that are coming out with 4.0 are coming out with 4.0.2 or 4.0.3; and although the updates since 4.0.1 have been small, there have been several bug fixes and new small features in every update since. Take, for example, 2.3.4 which enabled video chat on Google Voice. If you didn't (or still don't) have 2.3.4 or newer, you couldn't use it. It just didn't exist as far as your phone was concerned. 4.0.3 made several improvements to ICS in general, including but not limited to graphics improvements, new APIs, new and improved camera functions, bug fixes and accessibility improvements. Not to mention that the updates and Android itself are built with this phone as the hardware reference point and more or less designed from the ground up with this phone in mind. Android 4.0.1 was released October 19, 2011 and it still only makes up 7% of Android handsets 8 months later. If Google continues releasing major Android updates in November/December, that means there are only 5-6 months left for ICS to be current, and it's easily possible we'll see more updates until then that will never appear on other phones.
Take the T-Mobile Galaxy S II for example. That phone was released 12 October 2011, a week before 4.0.1 was released. It received an update from 2.3.5 (released July 25, 2011) to 2.3.6 (released September 2, 2011) just a week or so ago. It will be finally receiving 4.0.x (IIRC the worldwide version currently has 4.0.3, which it received March 13, 3 months after the Nexus) on June 11th according to the press releases the past few days. This is actually one of the better examples of a non-Nexus device getting an update.
This whole 'argument' is ridiculous and is either trolling or an attempt to derail the thread or both. Or not, it's hard to tell sometimes. Either way, it will always be the phone that makes you happiest that is best for you. I'm done.
for another 50 Euro, go for it GS3 is way better than GNexus

Yep...and that keeps right in line with AT&T mentality. The S2 was lucky to get that. Look at the fact that several U.S. carriers (smaller ones) have already updated to JB 4.1.2 on SGS3 models. AT&T being the way they are, will drag their @ss and we will be lucky to see this update. After all, why would they release an update that will break their apps...or make users happy.
I remember my HTC Inspire and the update to DHD to 2.3.5. Took AT&T 6 months or more to release it for the Inspire. It just happened to coincide with HTC's decision not to update the HTC DHD to ICS (after they had promised it).

I agree.. A lot of people think carriers are at fault, well partially they are but they have to make apps and other little bells and whistles be compatible with any firmware updates. But like I said android 5 hasn't been announced yet. At all... Back when ICS and JB we're going to be released they placed Andy and the dessert selection outside Google. Nothing has been brought out yet. Unless they're taking an Apple motive and keeping everything super secret, I'm not going to hold my breath for android 5 or the next Nexus until the end of this year or the beginning of next. Google IO is around the corner and still no announcement of Android 5. They're main focus this year is going to be Google Glass Project since its ready to be sold to the public.

In years past, that only happened a few days before I/O, though. We are over a month out.
And carriers are at fault for having to add those "bells and whistles" to begin with. They should just put their apps in the Play Store and update them as compatibility issues are found.

I know CM is nice in.all but that shouldn't sway you away from a great device especially GS4
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
Let’s start with the simplest form of this: CyanogenMod does not pre-announce support or lack of support for devices. Ever. Even for the Nexus 4, we did not announce support until a nightly build was available. Further, any announcement regarding the ‘dropping’ of device support will be communicated via this Google+ page, Twitter, Facebook, our blog, or a combination of those; it will not be something buried in a forum post.
This morning, a comment from a CM collaborator on XDA was taken to be as an ‘absolute’ in regards to support of the S4. He offered the opinion of four TeamHacksung maintainers, their frustrations and lack of interest in supporting the S4. What’s seemingly lost on those reading this is that his comments as an individual do not speak for CyanogenMod as an organization.
As for the team’s stance on the S4, there isn’t one at this time, and most definitely won’t be one before the device is sold at retail.
-The CyanogenMod Team
I usually jump on the band wagon for the newest and greatest. I just can't help myself. But if I'm smart this time and if experience has taught me anything I'll stick with the s3 for a while. I know myself and whenever i get the newest "best" device, i end up frustrated waiting for new ROMs and strong Dev support. Right now the ROMs for the s3 are smokin' and the hardware is still REALLY good. I'm gonna try to hold off until i see how strong Dev support is for both the s4 and the HTC one. Wherever devs go i follow... Lol. Right now they're on top of the s3 and I'm loving it.

Oh please come on. I never met a CM ROM that was worth keeping. Nothing ever works right, my personal experience. TWiz stock rooted works just fine for me on the S3, from great battery life to performance and stability. I don't live my life by what the CM team does or doesn't do. Geez..
The S4 has nothing worth the hassle of selling this S3 for 200-250 and then having to spend 500-600 retail for a new S4 for me. I strictly text and listen to music and use facebook. The fact that it isn't a quad core alone for the US variant was the last nail on the coffin for me to say no.

Nope, I wait until they drop in price.....I picked up my S3 for $49.99 on Black Friday!!!
Also, by then there are some decent ROMS and accessories for it.

I did the same thing lol. On black Friday I added another line to get the sg3. Sold my cousin the evo 4G lte that I picked up a few months prior. And switched phones on the account and bam. Been happy every since.

I'll be sticking with my SGS3. I'm extremely Happy with it. Plus the SGS3 should be seeing a good portion of the Software from the S4 .

It helps that the S4 won't be too different software-wise from the S3

Galaxy Note 2 to skip Android 4.2, go straight to 'newer version'

Here's the link to it: http://www.androidcentral.com/galax...go-straight-newer-version-says-aussie-carrier
I'm not sure if you guys trust Androidcentral, but what do you guys think about it?

I think the international variants will get updates first. ..and us last...
If at all...
Note 3 is likely to hit before an OS upgrade for this device. ..imho...g

I've been wondering if this would be a possibility. Even though it would probably delay us getting an update, I think I would be ok with it.

We will probably get the update before Verizon and sprint
Maybe around same time as T-Mobile
And Google should be showing 4.3 next week so we might get the update before the note 3

Is there a timeline when they would possibly release this new version?

I agree. I believe the note 3 will launch with the newest version, international note 2 will get updated shortly after (I'd say a few months) then the last update will be us.
Only other option would be to get 4.2 out on the note 2 (all variants) as quickly as possible and launch the note 3 with 4.3 in late October. I can't really see this happening though in my opinion. The less versions Samsung and the providers have to check and test the better it is on everyone.

Is this your first Android phone? Typically it takes 6 months after Google shows an update for it to come to you (at least)

Look at Asus devices
They took like 1 or 2 months after ICS and jellybean to get the updates

The other option will NEVER happen. If they were to release 4.3 for our phones before the note 3 comes out..... they'd be shooting themselves in the foot because then there would be no reason to upgrade. This phone is already on the edge of perfect. New OS is really the only reason I would upgrade when the time comes for me.

One manufacturer out of how many?
Look at the history of android, that happened maybe twice.
6 months at least is typical (I would even say expected)

That would be before the official build hits us
But what about leaked builds
The DNA got leaked builds of sense 5 like 2 months after it was released
And there still isn't the official build for it
We will have it whether it be official or not
But it will hit us real soon
I say 2 months tops before leak

Or the xperia ion and the to and pretty much every other Sony phone
And nexus 4 with 4.3
And Google edition phones with 4.3
And HTC one with 4.2.2 sense

T-Mobile should be delivering the official 4.3 update within the next 24 hours...
Unless its held up to address the slow data speeds problem that T-Mobile has promised to fix today.

Samsung hasn't been real good on the update game for a while now, T-Mobile... ehh. The fact that it's finally is in the pipeline surprises me tbh. If it wasn't for my love for my note 2 I would be back on nexus devices... the battery on these phones, SD slot and screen size are just to nice to turn away from, been looking hard at the nexus 5 but still haven't been able to pull the trigger.

The microsd card is the only thing keeping me away from the Nexus line. If I could get a 64GB phone I would loose the microsd. Also love the large screen. Guess I will have to stick with the Note series.

the screen was small, the camera sucked, the speaker was soooo low which was probably the worst part. lack of multiwindow was killing me and i missed my spen. AOSP is just too boring IMO.
also the front camera was a POS as well.
the only nice thing on the hardware side was the screen and the snapdragon 800 chip
