December 2nd...Official Update. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

T-Mobile should be delivering the official 4.3 update within the next 24 hours...
Unless its held up to address the slow data speeds problem that T-Mobile has promised to fix today.

Just decided to jump from 4.1.2 stock to 4.4 with Omnirom, so far so good. Happy they're still pushing out updates but they take to long..

Yeah, I was just going to post up and see if anyone got the update yet. Here's another release date publication that says today is the day: http://cdn.gottabemobile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/bbandroid4.3-620x2037.png :good:

Samsung hasn't been real good on the update game for a while now, T-Mobile... ehh. The fact that it's finally is in the pipeline surprises me tbh. If it wasn't for my love for my note 2 I would be back on nexus devices... the battery on these phones, SD slot and screen size are just to nice to turn away from, been looking hard at the nexus 5 but still haven't been able to pull the trigger.

The microsd card is the only thing keeping me away from the Nexus line. If I could get a 64GB phone I would loose the microsd. Also love the large screen. Guess I will have to stick with the Note series.

POS compared to the note 2 in every way. it was smooth as butter, other then that it sucked.

the screen was small, the camera sucked, the speaker was soooo low which was probably the worst part. lack of multiwindow was killing me and i missed my spen. AOSP is just too boring IMO.
also the front camera was a POS as well.
the only nice thing on the hardware side was the screen and the snapdragon 800 chip

Trade GS3 for Note II

Do you think it will be worth it to upgrade from my GS3 to the NOTE II?
I have read in the other gnote 2 forum there is a lot of other gs3 users who made the switch and are far happier with the note 2. U might want to take a look over there and see what they say

I returned my GS3 in order to get this phone. With all the quad cores coming out I felt that staying with a dual core would be a bad choice for my first android device. In reality it is all a matter of preference, I plan to use the s-pen in my college classes.
im doing it!
someone will buy my GS3 for $400 or so on craigslist. So i'm buying the $650 no commitment price and i have $100 gift card at best buy. so itll be $150 to me.. no biggie

is there any disadvantage to not having the att model or are they alike in every way? I preordered my phone off contract from att. i suppose if the tmobile version is the same i could skip the wait..
Any of you guys having regrets now that the nexus 4 was announced. I'm still in love with the not but the debate is still stuck in my head lol.

I've got the same debate going on in my head and it's compounded by my sons (both CompE grads) urging me to get the Nexus 4. I've been enamored with the Note, since the original came out. I'll get the N2 on the 9th and use it for 3-4 days. I'll know at that time, whether it's the right one for me. If not, I'll return it and get the Nexus.
didnt they leave LTE off the nexus 4? That's a dealbreaker for me

I sell phones. I play with both and own a note 2. It's a personal thing, but if you are a power user, which I think you are because you are on XDA then you will LOVE the Note II. Once you use it you can't go back.
* The screen is so much better and brighter than SG3.
* jellybean and 1.6GHz Quad Core processor makes everything buttery smooth
* watching youtube videos are stunning in HD
* extra large screen is great for gaming! especally on emulators.
* Using it as a E-Reader for my Kindle App Books work superbly well as the screen is the size of a small paperback book page

And no removeable battery or micro sd card slot. Now thats just crazy google. This note 2 should be a monster. It includes all of the above and then some. The at&t version does have rgb led notifications right? I havent seen any videos showing it. And I definitely want to use light flow.

imo I like having 2 devices. cuz I'm always paranoid Ill accidentally drop the note2 and ill be ****ed if the screen cracks. If I can do a redo ill get a s3 and save another $100 for a n7.
OP. I suggest to wait for the S4. But gotta admit, that's a long ass wait till it drops.
Note II is all about the pen for me. I personally wouldn't wait for the S4. Note3 maybe =P
S3 to Note 2, I will only stick with Note series
Maybe I'll bring back that ipad mini I picked up and upgrade my s3. Oh the pressure!

If it's in your budget, get the note 2 now and wait a month or two after the S4 comes out to see if it's worth getting and not plagued with issues. Then sell the note 2 and pay the extra 150 dollars or so to get the S4.
The note 2 is an extremely solid device. You might end up waiting 6 months for a device that isn't worth waiting for

I went from S3 to the Note 2.
Rooted and flashed Jelly Thunder the first day, haven't looked back.
The multi-view is amazing for multi-tasking. The phone is ridiculously fast stock, I can't imagine over clocking, and the battery has lasted me close to two days on normal use.
The S pen is also pretty fun to use
Yeah so wait for the S4 to come out oh but it doesn't have S-Pen functions oops now you find out the Note 3 is about to come out then you wait for it but oh the processor is not as fast as you'd like it to be so then the Note 3 is out but the S5 is announced oh but it doesn't do my chores for me then oops the Note 4 is announced so let's wait for that oh but it doesn't make me look thinner... then the S6 is announced...
Unless you have an unlimited pit of money, you shouldn't worry about new tech or getting the latest and greatest (because the latest and greatest gets unseated tomorrow). Pull the trigger, experience what ever pulls you towards it, then wait for another upgrade price to come around since the tech will always be newer, better, and more expensive.

The battery life on the note is why I kept it. I like everything else Berger on the gnex but that is worthless if I can't use it. I hung on to the Nexus to for ubuntu. Can't wait to try that out.

Well the Nexus will be around for a while. The Note 2 probably won't see many more updates. So in a year, the Galaxy Nexus would still be hip and cool and hanging in there with the latest features of Android while the Note 2 was left behind.
While the idea of a Note (10") with pen features sound great, every time I go into a store to play with one, it sucks. The Pen feature is pretty far behind the actual stylus and while it works well, it doesn't work as good as it shows in the commercials (what does though). To me, the PEN is awesome even if just for a quick doodle or note once in a while... but the Note is just too small to really utilize the pen to its full potential and limits it to just small notes.
The 10.1" Note is cool but it feels sluggish and laggy for some reason. Perhaps it is loaded down with junk like all displays... or it is just sluggish. Personally a 5" is too small and a 10" is too big. If they had a 7" at an attractive price point, we'd probably be talking.
Usually threads like this make me smh, but since I am very curious about the Note2 (I want one) I went ahead and decided to see what you have to say..
I am disappoint.
What the hell was the point OP?!
I would have stayed with the note 2 until the next nexus comes out end of 2013, note 2 is clearly a better phone compared to the gnex, that would have been the most logical thing to do but each to their own.

So you're saying that the Note 2 (which ships with 4.1 in case you forgot) won't get any updates? Let's not forget that the GS3 is coming up on a year old in a few months here and got Jelly Bean recently while the Note 2 was released less than 4 months ago. Both the GS3 and Note 2 are their best selling devices by a long shot, I find it hard to believe that they'd abandon updating it within a year, even with newer devices on the horizon.

For most consumers I'm sure it's hardly a thought. There's no question that it's not at it's end of updates but even if it is, such a popular device is going to get community support. I mean, the Verizon GNote2 has been out for less than 2 months and it's already got a slew of roms and a good amount of development behind it.
Yes, it will eventually lose official support from Samsung/Verizon much like the Gnex will, but where would XDA be if Android wasn't the masterpiece it is today?
If the Note 2 was cheaper, I'd have it, as long as ROMs are chugging out for it.

I bought it as a tablet replacement and it is simply too small, so I found myself carrying a tablet and a 5.5in phone which seemed crazy. The battery life will be missed, but a fresh nexus is just as snappy 99% of the time.
I have my Note 2 overclocked to either 1.8 or 1.92 and still get over 48 hours per charge and have had 8 hours screen time more than once even with moderate use over the 48+ hours.
Oh yeah, a little birdie told me Codeworx just ordered his today thanks to some nice people that gave him some healthy donations. Its funny that is the first device where people aren't going crazy waiting for AOKP or a pure AOSP ROM because they don't want to lose features.. that being said, there are some great 3rd party apps to take the place of SPad etc.

I thought the same, but many of us came from the Galaxy Note 1 where it was the same difference, 5.3 to 5.5
Alot of it depends on screen quality difference for me, and it would have to be much better for me to pull the trigger on it

I still have the note 1 too. There was a significant difference in software, battery and performance between 1&2. There is not much on the s4 that I can't do on the note 2. I use my 2 for work and a bigger screen would be a benefit. Not saying I won't get the 3 but if the rumours hold true , in my case, there would be no benefit to upgrade. Will see what Sept 4th reveals.

this is the smart thing to do..
I grabbed a note 8.0 a couple of months ago, and it is fantastic; there was a BIG difference between the note 1 and 2, so it made it a worthwhile upgrade; going from the note 2 to the note 3 appears to be nothing more than bragging rights, about having the newest phone.
Until the Note 3 actually comes out, none of these "leaks" have any relevance to most people anyways, so we will just have to wait and see..
I'm happy with my Note 2. The same as I was with my GS2, thus skipping the 3. However, I'm excited to hear about the new software features - I want to see a photo editor that really takes advantage of the digitizer.

A 6" screen would have been nice but I thought the small jump in screen size going from the s3 to s4 wouldnt be noticeable but it is.
I am really looking fwd to sept 4 because until then we really dont know anything for sure.

I would be surprised if we see 4.3 on our device anytime soon. I bet it will be at least 2014 before we see it.
It makes sense from business standpoint to not upgrade the Note 2 to 4.3 while the Note 3 is out for a bit.
Same reason why the Galaxy S3 was never upgraded to 4.2. They want to heat on the S4 as long as they can.

Ya think? From what I've been reading (rumors) it seems like Samsung will be skipping 4.2 in favor of 4.3 and it sounded like its not far off. Maybe within the next couple of months. It would be nice but what you said makes sense also. I guess time will tell.
Wow that pic really shows how lame an upgrade this is. 6'' would have been the natural progression for note 3. This pic makes me feel even more disappointed.
Let's see what Htc and Sony bring to the table then... After 4 Samsung phones in a row for me they finally disappointed me :/

Well, xperia z ultra is horrendous. Great specs but very unwieldy looking. To much upper and lower bezel. One max looks interesting but buying HTC is as likely for me as buying an iPhone (not in this lifetime). Will wait and see what they show before condemning it for screen size alone.

Problem for me is that, screen size is pretty much the main thing I would like to improve over my Note 2. The multi windows or floating windows option would be much better on a slightly bigger screen not to mention other apps making it more productive using other apps that can benefit from the added size.
The Z ultra has horrible bezels but I dont mind that much. If it was not for the stupid battery I would be all over it.
HTC...well I had a Tilt 2 once..that was my only HTC so not a big fan but at least it is 6".
Then again, I probably wont have floating windows with those so is all a tough decision but looks maybe I will just keep my Note 2 for now :/

Me Too...
It depends on the CPU/RAM for me, at the moment.
1080 would be a nice increase in resolution, but if you are happy with the note 2 (as many of us are) so far, the note 3 doesn't seem like a big step up from what we got already.
That said, I've got an upgrade coming up in a couple months, on one of my lines. So I could get the note 3 on upgrade and not spend a dime.
But, we don't know the whole picture yet.
If they frack with the internals like they did on the note 1, I'm probably going to skip the note 3. Unless the north american version is top tier, and not cutting corners on slower memory or a cut back CPU, it's going to be a hard sell for note 2 owners like all of us.

You have to remember people wanting the screen to get much bigger are a minority, they have to go the way business tells them. After the looks I get with the note already I can safely say most people already consider it huge, so it makes sense they wouldn't want to push it to the point where they would lose most of their sales. We definitely represent a small minority here

Yeah, I agree with this. Most of the people that wanted a bigger screen are the ones in the rooting and modding community. Everyone else that I have met or know always say "man that's a big phone" or "that's just too big". How unfortunate.
I would have actually preferred to have the phone size reduced without the loss of the screen size, but a slight increase in the screen size with much higher resolution is not bad either. Any larger than the current size would be uncomfortable to carry around. If so, it would be better to buy the Note 8 instead!

Time to say goodbye to my gnex...

Just bought a note 3 and sold my tried and true gnex.. thanks to all the devs and members who helped with any questions and such.. I will definitely miss the support of this community. Now off to locked bootloaders and safestrap world.

Have fun. Its one laggy device if you put it beside the Nexus 5 so don't bother comparing with the Nexus 5. You are gonna regret if you do so. Compared to the Galaxy Nexus its generations ahead though

I'll be right behind you on Thursday. Switching to T-Mobile and getting a Nexus 5.
Laggy device? I would hardly go that far...I played with a 5 for a day or so and a g2 note 3 and a few others, as much as I love nexus devices the note 3 and the 5 are neck and neck..kitkat does add some fluidity to the 5 but in no way shape or form does it blow the note 3 out of the water..

TouchWiz devices usually start to lag after a new flagship comes out (the old one will be updated with a newer system but the features will quickly bog the phone down), e.g. Galaxy S3 with Android 4.2 and 4.3.

I moved on from my Sprint Galaxy Nexus to a Nexus 5, I'm on T-Mobile now.
By the way, to anyone wondering which phone they should get?
Nothing compares to the Nexus 5.
Switching to T-Mobile and getting a Nexus 5 after work today. I can't wait.
I would love to switch to a Nexus 5 on T-Mobile. But from what I hear from other T-Mobile users in my area is the network coverage sucks. The people I work with have to go outside to make a call.

According to the coverage map, my area is pretty good. But isn't T-mobile going through some stuff to boost their network? I thought there was some news about them buying towers or something from Verizon. I can't remember. It can't be any worse than AT&T was in my area when I was on that.

Not sure where you are. I am on the Jersey Shore, half way between Philly and NYC.
Im right in the center of California.
I just got my Nexus 5 guys. Its an awesome device. I love the galaxy nexus. But if you need to update, the Nexus 5 is the way to go.

Well it depends on your setup and eyes. But simple things like flicking around the home screen, scrolling in widgets lag on the note 3 but not on the nexus 5 if you put them side by side.
Then again the note 3 I seen might be a different variant from yours, which also probably comes with a different regional software too.

I'm still considering this one myself, did it take you a long time to get used to the extra device width? I'm thinking it might put quite a bit of extra strain on your thumb when using it single-handed.

I have no issues with it. I like how it feels. But if that's something you may have an issue with, I'd suggest going into a store where they have it on display and check it out in person.

How is the battery life, in your experience? Since I have the extended battery it's been really difficult to let it go but would it make a super big difference?

Battery life is fine for me. Compared to the galaxy nexus, its a lot better. I can get through a whole day easily with the Nexus 5. Something I couldn't do with the gnex. Everyone's going to have a different experience though.
glad i found this thread - exactly what ive been looking for. i have loved my g-nex but its time to upgrade. was thinking about switching to the nex5 but hadnt really heard much. now i have. ill be swinging by the tmobile store this afternoon...
Smashed mine...
I smashed my screen, replaced it with a Xiaomi Mi3 because it has Gorilla Glass 3.
