[Q] Wi-Fi 802.11n doesn't work with a Russian sim card, is there a fix? - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

Hello. I've poked, googled and searched around trying to find a way to fix this annoying issue.
Long story short: till 2004-2005 Wi-Fi N bands weren't legalized for civilian use in Russia. Now they are and we here still sometimes receive such devices which block usage of those bands. I've faced the same idiocy with Xperia S.
GB worked with channels 1-11 of Wi-Fi N (yet 12-13 should have been available too since Russia != US). Still it was bearable. ICS was the same (I've inquired about this issue a couple of times on the official forum to no avail).
Here the long-awaited JB update comes up (hooray) and bam - Wi-Fi N is blocked. Now if I pull out the sim card and turn on my phone - it will successfully connect to Wi-Fi N network. If I put it in and reboot the phone - the phone will connect to the N network for the first few seconds and then - as soon as it initializes the sim card - it will drop the connection. If I don't enable 'G/N mixed mode' on my home router, it will be sitting with no connection and showing me that N network but it would not connect to it.
Now as I told before I've been searching around internetz and was able to find some lose ends and few possible fixes to this issue.
1. Region code change. Doesn't work. It did before when the phone wasn't able to connect to channels 12-13. But now when N doesn't work at all this fix doesn't help. It looks like the problem lies deeper now.
2. Messing with wpa_supplicant. Works... sorta. I've replaced stock wpa_supplicant file with this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2399391 . It kinda works after that but starts acting up further down the line. E.g. it connects to a N network and everything's cool and dandy BUT when I leave my home and wake up the phone somewhere else I see that it still thinks it's being connected to my home network. It sees the other networks around it at the moment but it doesn't want to choose them as it kinda connected to my home one. Which is nowhere near. And if I get back to my home with the phone in such state - it won't continue to exchange data over my Wi-Fi network. So to fix that I have to turn wi-fi off and then on again but I don't like such a behavior since in my town there are a lot of free wi-fi hot spots around (in public transport, at bus stations, in cafes, etc) and I'd like my phone to choose and connect to open hot spots automatically.
So could someone please shed some light on how all this restricting thing works, what mechanism is responsible for available Wi-Fi modes except region code field in the databases and how do I fix that? (or break it?). I mean the second fix is almost works but it looks like wpa_supplicant wasn't hacked properly. Maybe there are other wpa_supplicant files available?
Thank you!
Edit: forgot to mention that I'm talking here about Xperia S, firmware versions are: JB .200, .211, .96

The same problem with my xperia ION from Syria , i try many APPS to change region code but no luck , and then change wpa_supplicant file but i face same your problem and i am suffering of about this problem , and i already change my rom from 211 to 96 and the problem still .

Yea, I saw few people here from Syria and from some other African countries also and they all had similar problem. Although I didn't know anything about legal status of Wi-Fi N bands in Syria so I've decided to create a new topic.
It looks like this problem is quite wide-spread and before Sony officially acknowledges it, I hope we'll get some help from devs around here. I wonder if the devs actually look through troubleshooting branch of forum. Something tells me they don't.
I mean if there are fixes available it shouldn't be too hard to modify something in the system to get that damn thing working. This wpa_supplicant fix is especially interesting but I can't find any tutorial on how to edit it. Google keeps silence.

Did you find any solution for this problem , because I try many article but no luck .

hi,
did u find other providers or is the list completely empty ?
try the following 3 points of success
1)just try whether you can make a emergency call
2)hold your diamond to a speaker in your near and listen whether there is a strange noise(turn on the speaker loud)
3) if you had another pda try the sim in the device
post the results....

thanks for the reply bro
in my area, t mobile and AT&T show up as networks but my phone will just not connect to them, its just says "searching" and stays that way
1) is 911 the only emergency call you can make cuz i really dont wanna get in trouble with the law you know haha
2) i do hear a strange noise when i turn the volume up
3) i put my sim in my old n95 and it works just fine
its like my diamond is not even detecting my SIM card, i put my friends AT&T SIM in it and it doesnt detect that either

just read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=434950
i've also got such a strange problem but now all works fine...
and btw at this crazy time i put my sim in a old nokia 3310 and he found
a network immediately then i put it back in 3 different pda's (all of them are working up to 100 percent) and all 3 devices found NO network...
at this time iam also going really crazy and desperate
i dont know the reason for my success, i just let the simcard over the night in a other pda and on the next morning magicaly all works fine...
can u choose between gsm and wcdma?
just do this
select the automatic provider pickup and the wait over 10 minutes...
when he found a network after a long waiting time try connect to gprs.
if gsm will work and you can call someone and gprs will not works simultaniously u know you have the same fun like me

Okay ill take a look at that, and yes I can choose between Auto, GSM, and WCDMA. I usually leave it on auto, but even when I switch to GSM it does not pick anything up.

holy potatoes i dont know what i just did but it worked!!! i put the SIM in my old N95 and it found the t mobile network. i sent some messages, made some phones calls, then put the SIM back in my diamond and it found the network!! wow thanks a bunch for your help bro, i cant thank you enough
okay scratch that it worked for a little bit, until I started installing some apps and had to restart my phone, now it cant find a network again when it booted back up. Is it the apps that im installing that might be causing this?
no man i dont think so...
i think that was a mistake by the sim or by tmobile self (i think if they have any problems, they didnt say anything to their costumers )
if you have the possibility to go a little bit away from your home, for example into downtown then do this and test if u get there a signal.
i live in vienna - austria. vienna has 23 districts - when i had this terrible problem - at least in 7 disctricts i became immediately a signal and in my own district i became to no time a gsm signal (or more accurately described - i became a gsm sigal after 5-10 minutes waiting time (every time i turn off and turn on the phone, always i had to wait about 5-10 minutes) then i could make calls but no internet connection was possible. but in the other 7 disctricts where ive been, all works fine

thx - i do what i can
but i dont think that the problem is gone - you will see - it wont work long. i signal must be there - it should does make no matter whether the battery is - not load - half load or full loaded. it must always work! at 1% of battery it works on my device - it is impossible that that is the problem of you. go to the next tmobile store and let change your sim card - or make it like me - just wait 4 days - hope tmobile have fixed their problems - and be happy if it works.
otherwise it was a hardware issue and you have to send it back to tmobile for repair. but if you do this you must restore the stock software... otherwise you lose your guaranty!!

oh i forgot to say in the first post that my diamond is unlocked, im just using t mobile as my carrier on it but my phone is not locked to any network. so im not sure if its t mobiles fault but just my phone. My SIM card worked fine right away when i put it in my N95 8GB, but my diamond did not pick it up right away when i put it in. I had to plug in my charger first then a few seconds later it found a signal. Not sure why it did that, maybe just needed a little boost to grab that signal or something. Could it be the ROM or Radio I am using?

ok, then send it back to htc, or bring it to the store back where you bought it.
but do this only if you really see no more chance to fix it...
remember what i write, i try my sim in a nokia 3310 and it works, a few seconds later in diamond and 2 other pda's i got no network - back in nokia and it works i dont know how this could be possible!!!
i also try 5 different roms and all radios that exists too - and with all was the same - just nothing.
its your choice my friend - be patient and hope for better times or send it back to repair. but then also upload the original htc rom, radio and spl
i go now sleep - at vienna its 23 o'clock iam verrrrrrry tired from a hard working day...
but post further results, i read it tomorrow...

same here
i have a very similar problem.
i can only make and receive calls on the wcdma network, but not on gsm.
in both, it says that i have reception, but when i try to make a call it just goes silent and after a while the call is ended.
if i dial *102# which is the number to access your mobile credit status, on wcdma it opens a little bubble coming from the network icon and says the correct values, on gsm it simply waits and says connection interrupted.
i have tried several roms and radios, and the problem persists...
you can view my current setup in my signature.
any ideas, what could be the problem? is it the hardware? does this have to do something with hungary?
the sim works just fine, since 1997 (i have no idea how can 3g work on this little baby, but it does) =D
any help appreciated! tx

hi,
i was really wondering why this strange problem happens now on more and more users... thats really interessting....
did you try the sim in a other phone?
if it there also not work -> go to a store from your provider and told them that u have a old sim card which not works with your current phone.
normaly they should give you immediately a free new sim card.
and please tell me whether you have tmobile as your provider.
just for info because you write, that u can use 3g.... when i recieved my diamond i also had an old sim card which doesnt support UMTS or 3G but HSDPA was working, that cause because the sim is not responsible for this communication mode - only your phone!
the problem the guy has in this thread is almost exactly what i am experiencing right now
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=409733&highlight=network+problem
except mine used to just keep restarting an wouldnt boot up so i just let it do that for about 10 min and it eventually loaded up. Is there a specific number I can dial that will reset my SIM card settings or something? My phone has been like this for a couple days now and it sucks not being able to call or text anybody.
I thought I solved this problem when I plugged in my charger to my phone, then it started finding the EDGE network but my signal was still being dropped when I made calls, only some text would go through and thats it. Please guys, somebody save me from this misery!

at this bad time i also restore to stock rom 1.37 and he found in 1 second a signal BUT then it was also impossible to make an internet connection...
ya i was starting to think it was tmobiles problem until I put my friends AT&T SIM in and it was doing the same thing. It would just say "searching" and thats it, and well I just charged up my phone to almost full battery and it located a signal again. But it still drops calls almost immediately and I can only send text. Does the 1.93 ROM do anything to the Radio or antenna because it has been like this even when I flash back to earlier ROMS and radios. I am almost sure that flashing or changing radios will not solve the problem because I have done that countless times already.

[Problem] No network/signal

Hi
Just got my new Samsung Galaxy Nexus today, but it cant find a network and have no signal.
I have tried to search for network in settings, but it comes up empty.
In the "about phone" page under signal it says -113db and 0 asu (varies a little bit, but not much)
I'm in Norway using OneCall, on the Telenor network, but the phone cant find any network.
The simcard works fine in other android devices.
The phone was sold as unlocked/simfree.
It says "onecall" on the bottom of the notification bar when I pull it down.
There are also apn settings for my simcard (looks like they are read from the simcard)
Wifi works great, and I can't see any other problems than that it cant find a network, but that is kind of a big problem since it is a phone!
I have rebooted multiple times, three factory resets, and tried with another simcard, but no luck.
Anyone have a idea what to try? should I try a custom rom? or do you think its a hardware problem?
I just saw "Telenor" when I searched for networks, but when I tried to connect it said it couldn't connect, and now I cant find it again.
Seems like I just have the worst possible antenna! (or radio?)
What type of phone did you have previously? Maybe you need an updated SIM card?
A new SIM card has solved this type of issue for quite a few people so give it a shot!

But it works in other phones like the HTC Desire and the old Hero.
I just drove into town, and I got a few bars, could make phone calls and so on.
But back home it still cant find a network.
Which leaves me to believe that the antenna (or the radio) is bad.
Do I have to root it and install a custom recovery to install the stock rom again?
Or is there a "rescue" solution? like on HTC devices.
Works fine here. Test a custom rom or another radio or something.. If it not works go back to stock and return it. I bought a HTC once with a bad antenna.
same problem
what did you end up doing kjetil84? I have the same problem. at home I have like no signal, but other places I have a litle. I use Talkmore witch also uses telenor.
an update would be great
That happened to me once before, try doing a factory reset.
still a problem
Just tried a factory reset, and it did not help
I love the phone, but at this time its not usable for me

[Q] T-989 - No data network. Mobile Network State: Disconnected

Hi there. I own an unlocked, rooted t 989 Samsung Galaxy SII which I bought in the US. I recently moved to the Netherlands, and got a new simcard with Vodafone. The problem: I can't get my data to work.
I have tried (almost) everything, so prepare for a read. Here's the list:
- Sim card is fine, I tried it in a old phone and 3G pops up instantly
- Rebooted, pulled battery, turned mobile connections on/off, handpicked network, etc, etc, all the basics.
- Got the APN settings from Vodafone. Tried them manually, resetted them, automatically, turned it on, turned it off.
- Going online through Wifi works.
- Under settings-Status it reads under Mobile Network State: Disconnected. But I know that the phone detects the network correctly. It can distinguish between UMTS and GPRS here.
- So there seems to be no trouble with the phone being incompatible with the network. I read online that other people had NO trouble using their T989 in Europe.
- I tried inserting my old American pre paid T mobile sim card and turn roaming on. No luck.
- A lot of other people with the same problem tried to link it to Easy Battery Saver. I tried updating, uninstalling and going into its settings to find out what it could be, but nothing.
The last thing I can still try is to factory reset, unroot and try to get the phone to its most original state and see what it does. But before I triple wipe all my contacts, pictures, apps, etc, I want to make sure I did absolutely everything to try and fix this beforehand. Being a noob here, I can't post any links but I trust you I tried.
The people at Vodafone are of no help whatsoever. I hope you geniuses could help me any further.
[Edit] And sorry for posting this in General Chat. If a mod could move my question to Q&A I'd be most thankful..!
I am having the exact same damn problem! it started with being unable to send a simple text message yet having data. now it says it is searching forever

Try flashing a different radio/modem then an american one?
@decko5 Nice to see I'm not the only one, but that doesn't help us yet .
@doug36 Besides the fact that I'm running a stock ROM that should be compatible with no issues, I'm not sure how I'd do that. I can flash a separate part of the kernel? That sounds like a very tricky thing to do.

It's actually pretty easy. You can flash most radios via ClockworkMod Recovery. I couldn't find any threads with a list of Galaxy S-II radios here on XDA, but I found one over at RootzWiki for you. http://rootzwiki.com/topic/2725-radio-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-radios-updatezip-updated-20-aug-2011/
Just find the corresponding one to your geographical location and carrier (Google is your friend) and follow the steps.
Good luck and hope it helps!
(p.s. you should definitely look to see which radio you currently have so that you can download a backup of it before you go flashing radios.)
Thanks for that very helpful post! I've raped and butchered Google, but I'm still having trouble finding out which modem I should download. There seem to be so many and the post on RootzWiki gives no guidance to which is which. Any wisdom on this? I'm in the Netherlands, so Western Europe, on a Vodafone network.
By the way. I fully wiped my phone and installed Team Kang's Juggernaut 5.. No luck, same problem. What I found really, really weird is that it was instantly in Dutch. (Which is ok, I speak Dutch) But I don't remember ever selecting a language. How does it know? Besides, I'd rather have it in English .
What I did find out is that I'm still using a old firmware, UVKID, instead of UVKL1. So I'm restoring back to my previous ROM and trying to update. I'll see what happens. If that doesn't work, I'm going to restore my phone to stockest of the unrooted stocks and try and update.
If that doesn't work, I'll have no option but to send the phone to T-mobile.
I'll try the modem update as soon as I understand what I'm doing . But it does sound promising. Thank you so much for your help, it's greatly appreciated!
Hi guys,
I've updated my firmware to UVKL1, still no luck. Anybody who can tell me which radio I should try on this Vodafone network in the Netherlands?
I am from India and had faced this similer issue with many of my android phones specially with captivate and infuse.......Here what i always did to connect data network.
Just uncheck the use packet data network box in mobile network settings and try to move out from that area (say u are in ur office and going back home) and check the data in settings.
This thing has worked for me always, I don't knw if its related to the OS or to the network provider but this has helped.
Have u tried any other network sim card on ur phone ?
An update for other people that might be looking for a solution in the future. It turns out to be a clear Vodafone problem. I tried a different simcard from a different network (both T-mobile Netherlands and KPN), and they instantly worked without any trouble.
I went back to a different Vodafone store in Amsterdam, and they were much more helpful than the first one. The sales guy told me he had seen the same problem with AT&T iPhones on the Vodafone network.
I called Vodafone, and they have been very nice to me. But they haven't found a solution yet and are looking into it. They see me registering to the network, granting me access, but still my data doesn't work. They've also told me that they will let me cancel my contract for no cost if they don't find a solution.
So problem remains unsolved, but at least there's some light at the end of the tunnel. I was close to buying a new 500 dollar phone... Americans going to Europe: Beware with getting a Vodafone simcard. Sorry to the Vodafone guys, but as for now, that's the status.
So to give closure to this issue (I always hate it when people fix their problem without telling the interwebs..)
IT WORKS!
After an initial terrible experience at the Vodafone counter, the headquarter tech guys have really been great to me. So it is indeed a Vodafone problem. American phones always give them a headache. They don't know what causes the problem exactly, but they do have a fix. It turns out that when logging on to the data network, American phones (AT&T iPhones, my T989 SGsII, and some other Android devices) sent some gibberish along that make the Vodafone server go cuckoo.
The solution was, miraculously, to sign me up (for free!) to the WiFi hotspot service that Vodafone provides, and then logging on to a different APN, being: office.vodafone.nl in my case.
Hope this helps anyone who's having similar issues.

ok the issue here is that some of the t989 are vodafone and some are USA network , now the other solution is that you flash with command prompt which there is a link to that tool im going to upload from the link i got it from . its also a clockrecoverymod , but this 1 asks you for deleting data user on the device and also resets the network includes USA/overseas though if your not customed roms
or any hacked roms , after flashing this device your basically removing any unwanted apps and cache that are hidden during network searching will be fixed bugs , put the simcard in slot but make sure that is a 3G/4G accounts, than its going to reboot the device automatically , it should be searching for service and also will be a circle with a slash on it where the service bar usually is , just wait about 1/2 hour to an hour maximum time let it do its thing , ok whats happening now to the phone is that is thinking with android network with usa and overseas market apps comparing both carriers network also gets the proper address for the custom rom or original kernel, froyo either 1 will get the correct network address and / VPN / and also will be adding both T-mobile/AT&T choose T-mobile dont go for AT&T cause it will research network configuration plus the phone its not unlocked for both its just a network passby to get correct WPN/VPN/clockworkrecoverymod .
Where is an fix?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
@#11 That reads like gibberish to me
@#12 I think I posted a fairly extensive report on how I fixed this...?

[Q] Network issues

Hi everybody
I recently purchased a galaxy s2 Tmob but I have network issues
When I insert my SIMPLE MOBILE sim card, everything's fine, I can do phone calls, send sms and go online with data (but internet is slow), after few minutes the internet connection becomes very slow and then drops; followed by the network (the phone doesn't find network anymore)
The network comes back only if I restart the phone and it goes again
When I got the phone it was android 4.0.4
I tried to update with Samsung Kies, but a problem occured and I used "Kies recovery mode" to do the update
Finally the phone was successfully updated to android 4.1.2 but still the same problem. I did a factory reset+data deleting through settings and I still have the network issue
After some researches on the forum, I saw terms like "stock rom" and "radio" always mentionned where people had others network issues but I don't understand all that
Does somebody know how to fix it?
Thank u
hi
I found something to do about that
I saw on certain posts people saying that network problem can be fixed by flashing last radio version
so, that's what I did and by the way I rooted the device to flash SGH-T989_UVMC6_radio.zip
The problem seems to be solved but I'll wait to see if the network won't disappear again
Again, network is gone after 30 mn
pls someone can tell me what to do to solve this problem?
Where did you buy your phone? It sounds like it has a bad radio.
I used craigslist
when I bought it, I tested it with my sim card, there was no problem
U mean by bad radio an hardware problem?
hello, does someone have a tip for me to get my problem solved?

[Q] How to connect to hidden WiFi?

Hello xda community!
I have a strange and serious problem: I can't connect to hidden WiFi's.
I'm with a LG G3 D855 10H (no newer versions available).
At work we use a hidden WiFi without password but with Juniper VPN.
When I type in the network name and save it, it tries one time to connect, then my LG G3 shows "not in range". After a few seconds, the WiFi is on the top again with a very good signal.
When I try to connect again, it shows "not in range" again and so on.
I tried it at home and created a hidden network and it was reproducible.
Anyone else has problem with this?
Many thanks in advance for your help!
Best regards,
Jake

Now that is what you call a 'special' post!
Would you care to explain how it was resolved for the people that have the problem.
My problem still exists, but isn't urgent anymore.
I found out, Android itself have problems (or restrictions?) to hidden WiFi networks.
I also found an app names HiddenSSID Enabler, but it seems it didn't work for me (or G3?).
If someone has a solution it still would be very helpful fo rme and the rest of the community.

I have logs posted in my first post, WIFI DESTROYED TWICE or there abouts.
I've had to resort to DATA and its killing me haha i think i am getting close to fixing it, well i think i may be closer than you two and can one of you kindly take the lead as im reinstalling windows and i haven't gamed in 6 days :|
/system/etc/wifi/WCNSS_qcomcfg.ini
then the problem is complex but i am sure it is something to do with gEnableApProt=1
Offshoot fix, reinstall using googled imei number that doesn't have a flag or some how fix the flag <READ A FEW DAYS BACK>
I think actually the program that stuffed me was Airmon by maxters. It asked me if i was pro and of course, i said yes. Who would simply click no? I know a ninj wouldn't click no. I think there is a manual reinstall to link to it again i find the modem in its own partition having a chill, most likely trojan/backdoor and pwning everything around me.. I had three encrypted vpn backdoors and escalated accounts on my computer I paid the 5$ for the binarys, i think i paid 5$ for the back doors.
Not to sell Airmon out though.. Rooting our phones and accessing countless forums and websites really does leave us rather "xposed" some other cuplrits may be dsploit, ROM manager, linux Deploy/kali, Pamn IP scanner, system app remover pro, busybox pro's (Stephen/JRummy) or CMinstall/accessing the forums and trying to install cynagenmod / twrp recovery. I'm probably going to go with..... Airmon/Linuxdeploy or uninstalltool. But may have just been my IP logged and i hit a booby trap script along the way.
You guys done anything of the sort?
/Thread killller
Neither I understand what you are talking about, nor am I (as not native english speaker) good at "sentence guessing".
I have a rooted phone - of course.
But I'm pretty sure my WiFi is not destroyed...
