Looking for Root SM-T217s - Galaxy Tab 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Picked up sprint Galaxy tab 3 7inch SM-T217s I have searched but unable to find root instructions for it. Anything out yet?

Nothing has been found yet, I have a T217a from AT&T. Im not ready to brick my tablet just yet so I have not attrmpted anything unproven. I was told by another member that the bootloader has not been unlocked and we are stuck until then. I have not been able to find a stock firmware file to try the prerooted odin method yet either.

I am having the same problem. There is an app called How to root your device, but SM - T217 is not there in that. But 3.7.0 is there can I use that to root my Tab.

Is this the Sprint one for $50 that you're asking about? I have been searching for the same thing...
On a slightly different note, isn't it awesome that the specs are a little better than the wifi version??
Let me know if you find anything..

Yep it's the sprint one. Maybe someone can help us out

Any Linux Love?
Fortunately, I don't have Windoze installed on my system. Unfortunately, the only rooting methods I've stumbled across involve using a program that does not have a Linux port. Anyone know of any methods to root Sprint's Galaxy Tab 3 from a Linux OS? Odd that this isn't the standard, what with Android being Linux-based, and all.

How about a virtual windows? Ypou probably dont need more than VMware or something.

I was looking to avoid virtualization when it comes to modifying the firmware of external devices. I've had mixed results pushing things to an old android phone from a virtual machine and would really much prefer a native solution. Though if that's all that's available, I guess I'll have to plug it in, cross my fingers, and hope that those bits are able to make it through the virtualization layer in one piece.
Thanks for your input, N00BY0815!

Running the app through a virtualized Windoze installation, the process is a bit trickier than that, but yes, once the virtual machine recognizes the device, the app should be able to root it. Like I said, I was just hoping for a native Linux method to avoid virtualization.

[Root/Unlock] LG Optimus F6 T-Mobile

Hello users I have recently bought a new T-Mobile LG Optimus F6.
For those of you who may have just purchased one or need one rooted and or unlocked here is how to do it.
Root:
Download MotoChopper.zip that is attatched at the bottom.
Then place your phone in Debugging mode. Also check unknown sources in security.
Unzip the MotoChopper and look for "run.bat"
Once that is all done you should have root access.
Unlock:
I use Blowfish Unlocks. You can use who ever you prefer.
Dial *#06# and that will be your IMEI number.
Next submit for the code and wait.
When it comes back use: SIM_UNLOCK=00000000000000
Now to enter the code you have to put in a non supported sim and dial 2945#*500#
Then choose Network Unlock and enter your code. If the first code doesnt work do not panic.
You have 10 attempts and you usually get back 5 different codes. Try them until one works. But to be sure double check that you submitted the right IMEI to begin with.
Enjoy
works

Question about the rooting
Is the rooting all that is needed to enable tethering without the paying of an additional fee to T-Mobile? Basically being held hostage....... and will the phone be capable of OS updating in the future?

what's the difference T-mobile v MetroPCS
Metro sold me the F6 based on the fact it works on the T-mobile networks LTE. However, I am having a hard time living with an unrooted phone so I'm hoping to use motochopper to root. But someone said it will not work. Is there really that much difference between those sold by T-mobile and those from Metro?
I "upgraded" from a Motion to have bigger screen, and now I find out that may have actually been a step down? WTF!?
All I want to do is unbloat and get rid of "insufficient storage" errors. Shouldn't be so tedious!

You can root with the vroot method.
There's some questions about what it does exactly but it does work. I should point out that the program and its cousin program are under community investigation due to possibly shady dealings with pulling and pushing files. Its cousin program (kango or something) Has been shown to pull imeid off phones and apparently send them, unencrypted, to a Chinese server.... but it's the only thing I've found to be a proven working root.
Can't unlock boot loader so no custom roms but you can debloat.
I've discovered that both my l9 and my f6 hold onto the storage allotment for moved downloads...
Not sure if you get my drift...
If you download a file to internal and move it to sd it still shows up in "downloads" when you check the storage in your settings.
To solve it open settings/storage/unmount sd and then open downloads under internal storage and delete files you know you moved.

I have the exact same phone and the exact same problem. Kies (via USB) recognizes there is a SPH-L520 connected but won't actually connect to it. I asked Samsung for the appropriate drivers (none are listed on the webpage for the device) but Samsung says there aren't any drivers for the SPH-L520. Kies does connect my SPH-L520 and my PC via WiFi, though. And, despite having enabled Developer Mode and USB Debugging, Kingo fails every time. Any ideas?
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
It is also where Kingo originally got their method from, I wouldn't trust them too much if I were you. The best thing about the above method is, if it can't root the phone, it won't touch anything. If it can - it won't trigger the Knox. I tried on my JB 9190 and works. Unless you have a locked bootloader... that would complicate things.

Is there any way for me to root my Galaxy Note 4?

Hello,
I recently ran into a problem where I did an accidental factory reset on my phone. I have many important work and school documents on my phone. In the past, I just used GT Recovery or Wondershare and recovered all of my data. Now, I am faced with a problem. I cannot root the phone!
I have a Galaxy Note 4 SM-N910V (not the developer edition) running on OS 5.0.1. Because of the locked bootloader (yeah, fu** you Verizon), I cannot seem to find any root method that works. Any firmware I try to install is denied every single time. I tried going back to 4.4 (Kit Kat), I tried CF-Auto root, I tried Kingroot, nothing is working.
Is there any root method available, anywhere. Even if it is just temporary (I would be able to use king root if I was on 4.4). Or, is there any recovery software that has been noted to work without a root? Any help is appreciated.
If data is on sd card possibly remove it and use a pc to recover lost files.
What tbparkey said is your best shot. You could try an app called Kingroot which has had success for some people. If you have lost your stuff, I'm pretty sure there is a root method for the Note 4 on 4.4.4. You have to flash back with the correct stock ROM and use ODIN to do it. Good luck.
You can't go back to 4.4.4 if you updated to 5.0.1 via OTA. Temp root with Kingroot only works on 4.4.4. So you are up **** creek without a paddle.

Google towelroot. The first result should be a link to a webpage with a lambda symbol in the middle. Click the symbol and the apk should download. Install the app, open it, and click on the "welcome to towelroot" text at the top 3 times fast. A white box with a number code in it should appear underneath the "make it ra1n" button. Erase the code and type this number code into the box instead: 1337 0 1 7380 4 0
Click "make it ra1n", and you should have root, no reboot required.

This code, and every other code did not work. For the record I have a Samsung Galaxy note 4 SM-N910V (not the developer edition) running on OS 5.0.1. After every possible root method known to man, I still have not rooted my phone

I'm in the same boat, I have the same phone...
Samsung Galaxy note 4 SM-N910V
Hardware Version: N910V.05
Build Number: LRX22C.N910VVRU2BOG5
... I also somehow accidentally did a factory reset on my phone.
I booted it up from battery running out, charge, and power up and then I'm presented with the initial phone setup dialogues.
Through a Google search I also found this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/help/verizon-n4-sm-n910v-root-method-t3032252
... which tells me we're on a wait for someone to make some sort of breakthrough or something has to give at Verizon or Samsung and they release a way for us to bypass the locked bootloader.
Before I found that thread, with the end goal of trying to recover my data loss from the factory reset, I had also gone through attempting to use; Jihosoft Android Phone Recovery, Wondershare, and EaseUS Mobisaver to recovery my data.
The issue I'm having with all of these programs is that they all require the phone be rooted. This had me attempt King ROOT and a few others before I Googled enough to find that we're stuck until further notice.
That is, unless there is another way to get the internal data storage of our phone mounted to disk manager in Windows without having to root.
My next step was to look into the Android SDK to figure out a way for internal storage access, but I imagine that I would have already found something on it by now.
Here's hoping something comes about for our lost data.
There will never be a root for this phone....give up now.

Linux on dex

Hi everyone, I've just downloaded linux on dex and it seems to work fine but does anyone know how to shut it down? Thanks!
Really? It doesn't launch at all for me. Says I need to update, and then shuts down.
Works kinda well for me. I can't type the "@" and can't shut down but everything else seems pretty decent. You need to update what? Maybe try redownloading and unzipping again. I've had problems unzipping with myfiles so I've used another app for that. It could be the unzipped file is corrupted?

I have same issue, it says it needs an update and then shuts down. From what I've heard, It seems that there is an Android update needed for it to run and some devices have not yet received the update.

Yeah, I have the T-Mobile model, so I assume that it’s behind with the updates.

I don't know if this can help you guys when you'll be able to install it but it would appear that a safe shutdown won't work. I found a way to get a shutdown icon but nothing happens when I click on it and I can't shutdown through terminal command either.
Verizon here, same issue with linux on dex with s4, says i need an update., however my note 9 works fine.

What is weird is that our T-Mobile S4's have ARJ3 which is the latest available update on Sammobile for any Tab S4. But our firmware version has a U1 in it for the bootloader and the bootloader in ARJ3 for the rest of the Tab S4's is U2.
BTW I think the latest Verizon Firmware is ARI4 which would be a month before ARJ3.

Hi, buddy, same issue with my Tab S4, need update. But, you guys got update?
Tab S4 Verzion Linux On Dex Issue
I am having the same issue with a tab s4 on verizon network. Linux On Dex complains about needing a software update, I sent an email to the email on file with the google play listing for this issue and will see if they reply.
IMO: It's kind of misleading for Samsung to say this works on a Tab S4 when clearly it does not work on all models. Seems people with carrier versions are getting the shaft.
May i ask what app you used to unzip? I am having the same problem with my files.
I've used es file explorer.... Then once unzipped I moved the folder into the proper location. Es file explorer would appear to be able to unzip it with no problem
Hello,
Folks who were able to get Linux on Dex to work, does it work on Tablet mode as well or do you need to attach the external keyboard? I am thinking about buying the Tab S4 if I can run Linux without the external monitor setup (with a bluetooth keyboard). Thanks for your help!
You just need dex, which you can enable even without a keyboard but if you wanna use Linux then yeah you need an external keyboard of some sort

Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting us and we appreciate your interest in Linux on DeX service.
Currently, the Linux on DeX(beta) requires latest SW for Galaxy Note9 and Galaxy Tab S4.

We will continue notify latest updates and news via our official web site and email.
Please report errors that occur while you're using Linux on DeX(Beta) through the "Send error reports" feature on the Linux on DeX app.
The log file will be attached automatically and we will only use to analyze the problem.
And please understand that we may not reply immediately during a beta trial.
Kind regards,

I don't know, I kind of blame the carriers for this one. T-Mobiles handed off the relevant bits so the torch has been passed.

This will work in Dex Mode on the tablet itself. You do not need any accessories although a mouse and keyboard are recommended as it is a desktop OS. You can use the on screen keyboard and touch in DeX mode with Linux.
In Tablet mode only you can get to a command prompt. But be aware that that the command prompt will not allow sudo. I was hoping to do an update and could not from the tablet mode command prompt.
For those with Carrier versions (i.e. Verizon, T-Mobile):
I had to be on the October Security Patch and firmware version U2ARJ3 as the last 6 characters. Note the U2 for the bootloader version. T-Mobile's Tablet ships with U1ARJ3 and would not work. You will need to wait for the carrier to do the updates.
Hope this helps!
Same "update required" problem here, but my tablet is a WiFi version, not attached to a carrier. So I guess is more related on how awful the rollup of the updates is managed in general by Samsung, based on region specific requirements.

But you are different You are building your own ROM and maintained your bootloader. I have been watching your thread.
I guess my comment is for just stock no root.
