Linux on dex - Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Questions & Answers

Hi everyone, I've just downloaded linux on dex and it seems to work fine but does anyone know how to shut it down? Thanks!

Really? It doesn't launch at all for me. Says I need to update, and then shuts down.

Works kinda well for me. I can't type the "@" and can't shut down but everything else seems pretty decent. You need to update what? Maybe try redownloading and unzipping again. I've had problems unzipping with myfiles so I've used another app for that. It could be the unzipped file is corrupted?

I have same issue, it says it needs an update and then shuts down. From what I've heard, It seems that there is an Android update needed for it to run and some devices have not yet received the update.

Yeah, I have the T-Mobile model, so I assume that it’s behind with the updates.

I don't know if this can help you guys when you'll be able to install it but it would appear that a safe shutdown won't work. I found a way to get a shutdown icon but nothing happens when I click on it and I can't shutdown through terminal command either.

Verizon here, same issue with linux on dex with s4, says i need an update., however my note 9 works fine.

What is weird is that our T-Mobile S4's have ARJ3 which is the latest available update on Sammobile for any Tab S4. But our firmware version has a U1 in it for the bootloader and the bootloader in ARJ3 for the rest of the Tab S4's is U2.
BTW I think the latest Verizon Firmware is ARI4 which would be a month before ARJ3.

Hi, buddy, same issue with my Tab S4, need update. But, you guys got update?

Tab S4 Verzion Linux On Dex Issue
I am having the same issue with a tab s4 on verizon network. Linux On Dex complains about needing a software update, I sent an email to the email on file with the google play listing for this issue and will see if they reply.
IMO: It's kind of misleading for Samsung to say this works on a Tab S4 when clearly it does not work on all models. Seems people with carrier versions are getting the shaft.

May i ask what app you used to unzip? I am having the same problem with my files.

I've used es file explorer.... Then once unzipped I moved the folder into the proper location. Es file explorer would appear to be able to unzip it with no problem

Hello,
Folks who were able to get Linux on Dex to work, does it work on Tablet mode as well or do you need to attach the external keyboard? I am thinking about buying the Tab S4 if I can run Linux without the external monitor setup (with a bluetooth keyboard). Thanks for your help!

You just need dex, which you can enable even without a keyboard but if you wanna use Linux then yeah you need an external keyboard of some sort

Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting us and we appreciate your interest in Linux on DeX service.
Currently, the Linux on DeX(beta) requires latest SW for Galaxy Note9 and Galaxy Tab S4.
SW update schedule may vary depends on the region and carrier.
We will continue notify latest updates and news via our official web site and email.
Please report errors that occur while you're using Linux on DeX(Beta) through the "Send error reports" feature on the Linux on DeX app.
The log file will be attached automatically and we will only use to analyze the problem.
And please understand that we may not reply immediately during a beta trial.
Kind regards,

I don't know, I kind of blame the carriers for this one. T-Mobiles handed off the relevant bits so the torch has been passed.

This will work in Dex Mode on the tablet itself. You do not need any accessories although a mouse and keyboard are recommended as it is a desktop OS. You can use the on screen keyboard and touch in DeX mode with Linux.
In Tablet mode only you can get to a command prompt. But be aware that that the command prompt will not allow sudo. I was hoping to do an update and could not from the tablet mode command prompt.
For those with Carrier versions (i.e. Verizon, T-Mobile):
I had to be on the October Security Patch and firmware version U2ARJ3 as the last 6 characters. Note the U2 for the bootloader version. T-Mobile's Tablet ships with U1ARJ3 and would not work. You will need to wait for the carrier to do the updates.
Hope this helps!

Same "update required" problem here, but my tablet is a WiFi version, not attached to a carrier. So I guess is more related on how awful the rollup of the updates is managed in general by Samsung, based on region specific requirements.

Anything evidently new / better? My existing Kies setup is working fine finally and don't want to disturb it unless there is something interesting in the new release.
Will the Kies hack software still work with this? BTW not only is 2.3 out but Gingerbread 2.4 has also now been seen in the wild so it would be fun to still be able to access the Test Mode

Looking for Root SM-T217s

Picked up sprint Galaxy tab 3 7inch SM-T217s I have searched but unable to find root instructions for it. Anything out yet?
Nothing has been found yet, I have a T217a from AT&T. Im not ready to brick my tablet just yet so I have not attrmpted anything unproven. I was told by another member that the bootloader has not been unlocked and we are stuck until then. I have not been able to find a stock firmware file to try the prerooted odin method yet either.

Any Linux Love?
Fortunately, I don't have Windoze installed on my system. Unfortunately, the only rooting methods I've stumbled across involve using a program that does not have a Linux port. Anyone know of any methods to root Sprint's Galaxy Tab 3 from a Linux OS? Odd that this isn't the standard, what with Android being Linux-based, and all.

I was looking to avoid virtualization when it comes to modifying the firmware of external devices. I've had mixed results pushing things to an old android phone from a virtual machine and would really much prefer a native solution. Though if that's all that's available, I guess I'll have to plug it in, cross my fingers, and hope that those bits are able to make it through the virtualization layer in one piece.
Thanks for your input, N00BY0815!

Running the app through a virtualized Windoze installation, the process is a bit trickier than that, but yes, once the virtual machine recognizes the device, the app should be able to root it. Like I said, I was just hoping for a native Linux method to avoid virtualization.

Head into http://sammobile.com or http://samsung-updates.com and look for your phone's model name. They have firmware for pretty much any device so hopefully they have some for yours.

I have the exact same phone and the exact same problem. Kies (via USB) recognizes there is a SPH-L520 connected but won't actually connect to it. I asked Samsung for the appropriate drivers (none are listed on the webpage for the device) but Samsung says there aren't any drivers for the SPH-L520. Kies does connect my SPH-L520 and my PC via WiFi, though. And, despite having enabled Developer Mode and USB Debugging, Kingo fails every time. Any ideas?
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
It is also where Kingo originally got their method from, I wouldn't trust them too much if I were you. The best thing about the above method is, if it can't root the phone, it won't touch anything. If it can - it won't trigger the Knox. I tried on my JB 9190 and works. Unless you have a locked bootloader... that would complicate things.

The stinkers! I thought I read that Sprint was coming out with an upgrade to JB4.3 for us S4 Mini users, but it hasn't been pushed to my phone yet like the WiFi calling upgrade was. Think that might alleviate the Knox-blocks problem if/when it occurs?

Why would that alleviate it? Knox is here to stay. Very doubtful any update is going to remove it. Lately it's all about locking things down.

im in the USA, i needed to get it via firmware finder, im guessing we would have been one of the last regions to get the update
Emui 10 beta
Emui 10beta in Germany
Got it OTA this week on my Canadian ELE-L04. I had to reboot afterward because gesture navigation was glitched, but it's been working fine since then.

Mine is the ELE-L09, no idea what these model numbers mean yet though, coming from Samsung I have no knowledge of Huawei phones yet
Don't even know how to flash new firmware yet, or where to find it, seems a lot more complicated than using Odin on Samsung

If it came as an OTA update, there should be an icon in the notification area allowing you to install it now. Otherwise, you can launch Software Update from the apps drawer.

Thanks yea I already got it, I am the OP of this thread
Was just saying with my S9 there was one tool to download the firmware and one tool to flash it, just had to put the phone in download mode, from what I've read so far it doesn't seem to be that simple with the P30
For example some regions for the S9 would receive the update before others, but they were compatible with each other, so we could download that region and flash it until our own arrived, then flash back, with the P30 I'm reading things about editing config files and changing DNS and all sorts of weird stuff to just get the firmware in the first place, and flashing wipes the phone clean, where the S9 you could flash and not lose anything
Lots of reading to do

very good thread for that here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/tools/general/huawei-firmware-finder-team-mt-t3469146
the 3 different ways i have done it were 1) temporarily updating dns temporarily in my router and installing the download from erecovery
2) downloading the update file and installing it from my sdcard
3) downloading a hacked hisuite, adding dns to the host file for on my laptop, and then installing it through the hacked hisuite. this method seemed to be the easiest and most reliable, instructions in this post:

Thanks I`ll have a read through those threads, appreciate it :good:
EDIT - Bit stuck on this part
4. Open FF (any, I like the smartphone to register - less action)
Looking for a permitted Android 9 for your device on the principle: device_model-LGRP2
Don't really understand what they mean by that, just search for a firmware version for my model device? But how to register?

are you using the android app or the windows app?
if you are using the windows version open it, click on the "common base"near the top right, then you need to type your model type in (which you can find in your phones settings) mine is ELE-L29, click the search icon and you will see the firmware upgrades available for your model.
then right click the firmware you want to test (you always want to chose the FullOTA-MF
firmware options) and click check firmware access. if you get the result firmware is approved, click ok and then right click again on the firmware you just tested and chose copy.
then click the icon above named DNS update (the name of the icons show up when you put your mouse over it)
in the popup right click in the editable field and it paste, then right below it click register, once this is done the Team MT server will have registered your IP address and will know to send it the firmware that you just registered.
after you have done this you will be able to use either option 1 or 3 that i posted above
it may actually be easier to register on the phone but i found step 3 the easiest which you will need your pc for anyway. i left my phone in the car and cant remember the steps exactly enuf to try to explain them for the phone app
it doesn't matter how you register the firmware, via phone app or pc app, except that on the phone you will need to be using wifi to register your ip address

Hello!. I have a P30 from Claro operator (I'm from Colombia) and I would like to know if you can flash to a global firmware without having to unlock the bootloader. The operator firmware bothers me a lot because it doesn't update often.

S20 ultra Live Demo Unit fully operational... permanently?

Hi everyone.
I've just bought this LDU device to a guy, and it seems to be fully functional (excepting some minor things, I can make phone calls and use 4g/5g data connection, etc).
Anyway, I'm a little bit scared that something stops working suddenly, mainly because of the patches that have been applied to make it work, specially for the IMEI (these devices originally don't have one, so it's "patched").
Another thing is that it comes with Android 10, and I'm not sure if I can install another ROM with Android 11 without breaking the patching that makes it work so far.
Anyone with experience with LDU devices could please share some information about it?
Thanks in advance!
Edit1: After some days of testing, I've found the following issue:
-Cannot update via OTA, CSC is WWA which I haven't found anywhere.
-Samsung apps like Pass and Secure Folder don't work, probably due to Admin mode (despite no root app is installed), or it may be related to the CSC too.
The rest keeps working fine so far.
This sounds like a stolen phone i'm afraid. Patching an IMEI is considered illegal.
Any device that has a cellular modem in it (for calls and data), MUST have an IMEI.
If the seller said it didn't have an IMEI, he's lying and you are potentially dealing with a stolen phone.
Thanks for your reply. I thought it was a stolen one at first also (although he told me it was part of a payment from the phone store he works on), but then he had the white box of the LDU devices, so I don't think you can get one of those easily.
Anyway, this device obviously came with a cellular modem because it's working, but I guess the IMEI was patched somehow after reading it in some forums, but not sure. In fact, if you have a way to confirm it, I would be more than happy yo test it and publish the results.

Hi I'm using a Note 20 ultra that was previously an LDU. It came on android 10 like yours, I've currently upgraded it to android 12 via odin and everything still works fine. LDU are fully functional phones put in a demonstration mode and void of imeis, aside that nothing wrong with them. You might wanna install a new battery tho since they're batteries are quite overused because they were Live demo units....
Hello, i have An Galaxy s21 ldu and im wondering how to get it to work. I tried getting it an imei but all of those apps dont work. How to get it to work?
