[Q] advice for newbie oldie - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello , sorry for the cryptic title to my first post , My name is Graham , I am in my mid 50s and have had little or no need for mobile phones let alone modern 3rd or 4th generation ones .but I have a Problem that i will put in 3 parts .
first , My partner has learning difficulties and has poor motor skills , up until now she has been getting by with "doro" push button phones . we are due to upgrade her pay monthly package and the Doro,s dont cut it anymore , so i am looking for a phone with dead simple menu system .
thats the first part "a reccomendation for a simple modern 3 or 4g phone" touchscreen would be nice.
second part is that i dont want her running up huge bills as "apps" update themselves etc , and she is happy with her PC for anything internet related anyway , so whatever phone I have for her ,will i be able to remove all apps including the ones that come with it "embedded ?" and disable or password lock internet access to prevent bandwidth being used .
and finally assuming i purchase such a reccommended phone ,and it is possible "without bricking it" to be able to disable and remove apps/internet etc.
has anyone ever done this on a contract phone , ie, would it be legal .
please be gentle ,I have the greatest respect for the techies here , who could not think as slow as me , if they tried . its just i need to sort a phone for her and although i would like a modern phone "leaning towards a sammy" for her ,I dont want to end up with a contract that sucks me in to a system that will be costing me even when the phones idle . (updates/downloads etc.)
thanks for your patients ,
Graham
sorry ,I could not find an icon with a zimmer frame .

First of all welcome to our forum Graham.
S4 mini is a very good phone to start as it has also a menu that turns the main screen simple with few large button for your contacts and applications. The main problem with all those phones is that you can't uninstall all the applications that comes with them unless you have root access. (like administrator) That means you must have some knowledge for that but we can help you also. There are many good guys here who will be glad to help you.
Also you can disable the internet connection so she won't cost you extra money on that. Btw I don't know if it's legal with a contract phone but wth....what's legal or illegal to this world!!
Hope I helped a little.
Best regards

thanks , you say you can help with knowledge regarding "root" access. .is there any risk associated with this process .
also can this phone perform "voice typing " for text. (dictation) it would be great for her if it could .
thanks once again for your help and advice .

There is always a risk in modifying phones.
Voice typing is available in several android phones including the S4 Mini. Unfortunately, it is not always accurate.
You can disable automatic updating of apps and manually disable individual apps from using your Data plan, but still allow those apps to use the Internet when connected to a WiFi network. All without needing root (administrator) access.

thanks for the advice ,I have ordered the phone , and will be back soon for some Advice on settings .
thanks Graham

got the phone , on the box it says Samsung Galaxy S4 mini I9195 , on the back of the box it says GT-I9195 , and on the side of the box next to one of the bar codes it says I9195 PM.
Will i need to access any more info via the phone itself to find out if its compatable to be rooted .
i want to be able to completely uninstall all apps(stock) or at least permanently disable them and completely and permanently disable any internet access too . the phone is for my partner who has asperger syndrome ,and will only be using it for calls and texts , she has been having a bad time using older push button type phones as she has poor motor skills ,she does operate a touchscreen tablet ok though .
I just want to be able to guarantee that she cannot run up a large bill because of software and apps updating without our knowledge .
any help would be appreciated . thanks .

Just go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2364980 and follow the steps 1-9. That should be enough to root the phone and then you can download from Google play Titanium Backup. With that program you can uninstall any application you want. But be careful what to uninstall. You should take a backup first with Titanium Backup before you'll proceed.
To disable any Internet access through your operator, go to Settings- More Networks-Mobile Networks-Access Point Names and tap on your Operator Internet settings and with the left touch button choose Delete APN
Btw if you don't want to root the phone there is another solution to disable the applications you don't want. Just go to Settings-More-Application Manager scroll left to see ALL and then choose any application you don't want to have , and tap Disable. That way you won't loose your warranty. (I recommend it, if you are not experienced with rooting)

thanks , phone now rooted (congratulations your warranty is now void etc, etc.) and i seem to have a new icon "superuser" , though I have had a quick look and cannot see how to delete apps yet ,but i guess disabling them is as good ,and easier to recover from . have already disabled almost all google related stuff (cos I hate it) can i download titanium backup and install it via SD card , as i did with the rootkit ? .
thanks again ,you have been a great help , Graham

Titanium Backup is an application and you can download it from Google play. If you have already disable google play you can enable it again and download it from there. Of course you can search in google for it, to download from a different site, send it to your phone and install it like any application from the phone's file explorer. (not from cwm)
Superuser is for giving permission to applications to have root access.

OK , I have found titanium backup as an "APK" file , so I can send it to the external SD from my PC and use the phones own explorer to find and install it from there ?
I assume i need some additional system file explorer to work with super user . to be able to completely stock apps.
thanks ,and sorry for being so slow on the uptake .

Yes, that's right. You can install it through phone's file explorer. With Titanium you can uninstall all the stock apps. No need for file explorer with root privileges. But if you want one, a very good file explorer with root privilege is ES File Explorer. You can find it as you did with Titanium Backup.

Oh something I didn't mention is to enable USB debugging....go to Settings-More-About Device and tap about 8 times at Build number. This will enable the developer Options menu at Settings-More-Developer options
Go there and check USB debugging.....I think that's the reason Titanium gives you some errors.:fingers-crossed:
Glad I helped you!!! :victory:

[Q] how to install apps ?

hi i am new to the htc hd mini and i am finding very hard to find good info on what to do with it maybe its still new, but how do i install apps i have downloaded a few themes/apps and not having any joy of putting them on the the phone sure i have put them on the memory card but can't install them from there i have downloaded the activesync (running win xp) and that don't install apps. so i am stuck it was quicker and easy to jailbreak the ipod touch and put apps on there. where am i going wrong ?
many thanks a confused hd mini owner.
p.s
now i know there is no compass on it (one of the things i was looking forward to using)
also while looking on youtube there was a clip where someone is doing street view or somethink like and moving the phone about and the street image moved too, also i was told that using google maps with the layers i could find a shop with it..i think this must be for another phone.
apart from this its still a nice little phone would be much better if i could get some of the above working.
App extensions are CAB it's like seeing zip or rar file on PC.
to check the file extension in your PC go to Folder Option > View Tab > Remove tick from Hide Extension...
move cab files in your Storage card then in file explorer from your phone click on them and if prompt Microsoft security choose Yes and finally choose where to install applications.
in case your application is EXE: connect your phone to your PC via Active Sync and then run the file from PC... Follow the on screen instructions.
thanks emrause i shall try this when the phone wants to connect to the pc this morning for some unknown reason it don't want to connect to the pc i have tryed a data drive and getting no luck and only once did i did it will activesync but nothink happend...almost pulling my hair out here...wish they would have made the phone a bit more user friendly

its not about phone...check your firewall settings(disable it while phone is connected to pc,this is what i do)..also make sure u have activesync installed
well i have finaly put the apps on my card after deleting activesync, but 1 out of 3 i could install and this was richessegps but did not work after install, but skype and where is i couldn't even install they are but i click on the setup and takes me to a webpage full of writing so i am giving it up as a bad job today..maybe try it in a few weeks
install net framework 3.5 .many apps requires it
also not all apps will work on mini cuz of its resolution...

Trio 4.3 Root and Google Play Store

Hi,
Like everyone else I have to say"Follow these instructions at your own risk" I do not take any responsibility for any thing that happens. It worked for me so it may work for you!
Trio 4.3 Internet Tablet M4302 Model Trio 4.3MID 4.0C by Mach Speed Technologies
I just picked this tablet up. I have successfully rooted it and have installed a working Play Store. I now have access to all my apps that I use on my Galaxy Note 10.1.
To root I used the instructions from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
Once I had root I wanted to get Google Play Store on the tab. I found a couple of places that had information concerning adding Play Store to other devices and kind of pieced the info together to come up with this solution.
1. Download gapps for ICS. http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
2. Unzip file
3. Navigate to the " System/app " folder and find "phonesky.apk and setupwizard.apk"
(You will need to copy these two files to your tablet)
4. Once files are on tablet use something like "Root Explorer" to copy both to the "system/app" folder of the tablet.
(The folders will need to be mounted as "R/W" so they can be written to )
5. After the files are copied to the proper folder, you need to edit the permissions for both.
6. In "Root Explorer" long press on each file and choose "permissions"
7. Edit permissions to read "Owner: Read, Write" "Group: Read" "Others: Read"
8. Reboot and launch Play Store
Frys has this for $49...thinking I might need to order it as a music player for my 2 month old!
I used this method to get Google Play Store to work, But its not rooted. At least you can download the files.
http://nwteche.com/red7_blog/instal...-or-most-other-tablets-running-android-2-3-3/
works great thanks successfully rooted and installed google play on my trio stealth lite 4.3" internet tablet m4302 runing android 4.0.4 :victory:
Mine came rooted
Thank you for this post!
Just wanted to give a heads up for anyone who finds this thread through Google or whatever, like I did, that it's possible your device is already rooted.
I bought mine today from Big Lots - branded as a: Trio 4.3" Touch Screen Media Player for Android by Mach Speed Technologies - on the box (well blister plastic wrap thing that is Hades to open...). The instruction user's manual, however just calls it a Trio 4.3" Internet Tablet.
(Specs from the box.)
Android OS 4.0
4.3" Capacitive Touch Screen
4GB Internal Memory with Micro SD Slt (Up to 32GB)
Built-in WiFi
Speaker
Auto Rotate for Portrait & Landscape Viewing
1.2GHz Processor
Rechargable Li-on Battery
Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you, and let everyone know to check your device first. There may be better ways to check, but there are a couple of apps in the Amazon App Store called "Root Checker" - don't get the "My Root Checker" - it has crazy pop-up ads - I deleted it in seconds. But just check to see if your device is rooted. It could save you some time, and potential headaches.
Well, jsut confirming that this guide works. In the root post, I used the stadard root method...if you are like me and got this for a little one, they wanted apps. Of course I couldnt open until today...but it really works. I just dowloaded the root explorer apk (a quick google search worked) and installed it...i can upload a screen shot if necessary

This. I picked up two of these devices and both were already rooted.
Dude, does anybody have the factory rom? I don't even have custom recovery but, I fukt up and tried to install cm9 and it says to reset the phone but, the touchscreen wont work. I dunno if I'm gonna be able to fix this or not. I've hard bricked a lot of android phones and still fixed em somehow so maybe I can. Any help?
C
Sent from my MB886 using xda premium
My Trio also had root access right out of the box. Followed the instructions right down to obtaining the "root explorer" apk. Worked like a charm, no issues at all. Now I just need to find a custom rom that will perform better than stock. Thanks for all the info.
Hulu Plus
Since this is the best thread for this tablet I've found. I wanted to ask if anyone has gotten Hulu to work? I have installed many different versions including the latest and all of them will play the ads just fine, but once it gets the episode it just sits there and buffers and buffers and buffers. Devices on the same WIFI have no issues. I am even talking with Hulu suppor about it and of course they are playing dumb about it and just giving me standard troubleshooting. Is this tablet blocked by Hulu somehow because it's chinese made? I don't get a region error, which I can force with proxies and such. I just get buffering and buffering and buffering. Any help would be much appreciated.
I need firmware or update.zip im stuck on boot screen.

[Q]new to android abt m8 and rooting

hello
well i'm new on android system i was an apple user until now
and i just got the m8 from few weeks , some stuff still confus me
so here are few qsuestion if u can help me with
1 - on the iphone i can backup everything threw itunes ( contact , app , photo )
-on my htc m8 im using htc backup , does it backup all those stuff like apple devices ?
especially the photo part cause like i see there is google photo it does backup everything by itself
so if i wanna restore from backup i need to restore my files alone then the photo alone ?
2 - i load all my photo , app , music on the sd card , each time i save a pic from the net like fb as example i need to move it to the sd , is there a way that it go to the sd automatically ?
3 - i have 9gags application and some games , each time i open them , they save all the loaded image and gif , and they are saved automatically on the phone storage
how can i disable that they are really annoying , and they even backup on google photo so i need to delete them from the phone storage and google
4 - if u can link me for any guide step by step to root my htc ill be thankful ( cause i know **** abt android )

1 - I use google to back up most of my stuff, esp. contacts. There are also backup apps, though they are more functional if you are rooted.
2 - I would say non-rooted then no. Android 4.4 made it difficult for apps to use the ext sd properly. After rooting, it would depend on the apps capability, and weather or not you have done something to add ext sd functionality.
3 - I don't use that app, but check in the settings for an option to not automatically save.
4 - There are all-in-one tools in the development sub-forum. Be very careful, and do your research before deciding to root. It is alot of fun, but you can mess up and cause yourself a headache, or brick your device.
5 - ES File explorer, in the Play Store, is free and should do anything you need. That said, you will have trouble with the ext sd card if you're not rooted.
6 - Check the play store for the most popular apps. My personal favorite right now is the Clash of Clans game. Also, I use Dolphin as my web browser. There is lots of good stuff, too much to list really.
Also, welcome to XDA!

is it possible to root s4 mini when phone and exsd card are encoded (crypted)

Hello i´m brand new here and wonder if my question is too easy or too seldom to be answered but i am stuck with this probleme as i don´t know how things are working.
i rooted my s4 mini gt i 9195 4.4.2, that wasn´t a too big deal.
thereafter i wanted to secure all my data and used the standard 4.4.2 cryption (encoding) tool for both the phone and the exsd card.
since then i do not have anymore root rights.
is it so that root rises everytime a phone is booted but a crypted can´t as the phone can´t acess any memory in the boot mode ?
i´m sorry if this question is too oversimple but i´m fully stuck and can´t find how to root the device and same time have it fully crypted phone and exsd card.
maybe someone there to help me with this problem ?
thank you very much in advance !

it's a very long time ago I thought of stock fimware, but it should be possible to have root and encryption. But I think you might have to unroot, encrypt & then reroot. (but it may also depend on the rooting method and/or the version of the root package you are using).
If you tell us which root method you are using and the version maybe someone else will be able to help who rooted stock ver 4.
Personally I'd say you should update to to a newer custom rom which is more secure and will have more support here on forums (through you will lose the Samsung apps like s-memo etc but there are plenty of apps to replace them). Also I think the open source root addon package from Linage OS (only works on Linage rom) is best as many of the root packages have questions over trust & access by governments from the source country, if not out right malware, in my opinion.
Eg Kingroot, though they are not the only ones,
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/kingroot-malware-adware-root-t3563090
thank you...
... very much for your answer, i will start the process all over, i was thinking that an other, particular a newer then stockrom might become slower, but i have also been thinking already about the linage os, but i haven´t been checking enough yet to be able to make decision. i anyhow wanted to use root also for deleting basically all bloatware and system apps i won´t use or replace them by open source, but my limited knowlegde in general about the android system didn´t let me come to a good and fully useful system yet which fullfills my requirements of fully crypted including sd card and same time having the power of deleting apps and being able if needed to move all apps which i want to the sd card and withdraw rights of apps. i will now investigate linage more, but somehow i had in mind it´s not existing for every phone i.e. my samsung gti9195.
do you know if there is anything what can use truecrypt in opensource for mounting and creating containers under android ?

if you want people to see your answer/repy make sure you use the quote button or @username so hey get a notification.
No Android doesn't get slower and slower like Windows did as out works differently, newer versions have even better memory management.
If you have the normal international I9195 phone (no other letters after it) then there is a linage rom for it, that's what I have.
No you can't use Truecrypt, Veracrypt or similar on Android, as far as I know. There are apps that allow you to open Truecrypt containers but I had my doubts about almost all of them, though I didn't fully research as I don't really need it. Android built in encryption is regarded as good enough, ..... though as the key is stored in memory (on our model, & most Android phones) it could be recovered on our phones by a sophisticated attacker with personal access to a powered up phone using for example direct chip probing, freezing etc. (BTW Truecrypt is also known to have weaknesses now)

(BTW Truecrypt is also known to have weaknesses now)

i downloaded now the linage s4mini lte version, mine is basic gti9195 with no extras, but hadn´t yet the time to give it a try. first i´ll have to decrypt the 200gb sd card i´m using, for that longperiod it´s taking for backdecrytion i´ll have to be home, which is in 3 days.
first i didn´t want to try linage as i understood that google was somehow buying cynagenmod some time ago. of course a stock rom is anyhow by google so it would make no difference if google would be involved in linage by part owning it.
the crypted containers would help to use the sd card flexible also in the case u want to swap it around for the purpose of sharing files with other systems or phones fast, like a portable hdd, with a crypted card you are locked to your phone, and i also don´t know if it would work after it´s removed once from the phone and used after another has been inserted.
i investigated some time ago those apps which were cabable to open true and veracrypt containers, but i didn´t manage to use them, same time i also had doubts about them in general as you did.
i personally still trust true crypt most as it was born as far i understood independently, the slight risks it has concerning those mentioned hack methodes are as i see only if the device is physically out of hand, with this risk i can live as it needs some effort to be hacked.
but it looks like for a phone, which i´m actioally not using as a phone(mine is an old nokia) but as an small perfect mainly offline computer which has all offline to hand, wikipedia, mapsme, general helpful apps and own data without storing it in a cloud etc i will now go the complet cryption for both the phone and the sd card as containers don´t work, and it´s nice to have all privat data like lifetime pictures and videos with you without fearing too loose them. i wonder if the phone can crypt more than one sdcard and use it when changing , so it would be easy to have some tens of terabyte of data behind the cover.
i will tell you when linage works, it might take still some time and new questions from that arise, as i´m still fully novice with this whole android thema as i haven´t been working with linux systems yet in general.
