Fun things to do now that we have Root!

Hey everyone, most people might already know this, but I think it would be nice to compile everything we can do with our Glide's now that we have root, feel free to add to the list!
1. Install Root Explorer or similar file explorer:
This program will allow you to access areas of the Android file system that weren't accessible before having root.
2. Install Titanium Backup:
This program allows you to backup all of your apps, app data, and settings. great if you are messing around with the phone and run into trouble, just remember to save the backup to another source in case you can't access your phone at all.
3. Supercharge your phone!! (by zeppelinrox)
go and read this thread, follow the steps and see the results! I did this and it worked. Also an interesting read.
What other cool things are you guys doing with root? post it here!
I'm on the same boat with you as root explorer and titanium backup , but never heard of supercharger till now.. I had an HTC Desire HD (still do but never use it anymore) but it wasn't my regular use phone, it was more of a "HTC Player." And I tried the supercharger, but it kept coming up as "[[: not found" which was out of the ordinary. Don't think I'll be sticking with it sadly.
Still have to do that update in an hour, really hate how AT&T doesn't allow you to "update" more than once a day.
I'm still trying to learn the in-out of modding. Not that experienced yet

Hey, did you install BusyBox? I had trouble at first as well, then I installed a different version of BusyBox from the BusyBox installer and I installed it to a different location, Supercharger worked after that

There are two busybox installer programs I use, one is from Stericson, and from JRummy16. JRummy's busybox worked for my SGS Glide, but stericson does not even install. A complete opposite to my Captivate and Infuse, I have stericson's busybox on them but jrummy's doesn't work.
If you don't like to get Root Explorer, try File Expert, it also has root access which can be activated in settings, it also has file sharing like web, ftp(s), http(s). I have both, but prefer Root explorer for it's very basic and easy to use.

Just curious, which supercharge setting are you using?
I tried to get the update first, but "Update is Failed" yet again, and when I tried to do script manager, it said I didn't have root access, so i was confused. Checked titanium backup, no root access either. Then I had to re-root the phone, delete bloatware. I checked titanium backup again but it said I didn't have root access, but everything else did (Script Manager, SetCPU, Busybox Installer). Supercharger is working now though.

Hey, I think the same thing happened to me as well, after successfully getting the supercharger script to work, I went and tried to run the BusyBox installer again to find out the version I installed, and it said "Error Root access not detected"
It appeared I had root in all other apps, so I uninstalled Super User and BusyBox installer, and re installed them, now Root isn't working for any program.

You have to re-root again, sorry Do you still have titanium backup? Because the busybox version for that is 1.18.4, not the recommended 1.18.2. Uninstall titanium before or after re-rooting, and get busybox installer from jRummy16. Then run the script and you should be okay.
But if you have a backup folder for titanium backup, move the folder onto the computer where it'll stay there forever.
My list:
- Static the phone's IP on your DHCP server
- Install Samba. Then create a link on your desktop to \\yourphone\sdcard or smbmount on your *nix box. Great way to transfer media.
- Install QuickSSHd, and bind on :22 (yay)
- Install your choice of full VPN services (ie. openvpn) so you don't have to constantly redial with the built-in client
- Bring up a chroot()'d Debian environment, and apt-get install build-essential; full GNU toolchain on your phone!
- Install ROM Toolbox and remove all the carrier-bundled crapware
- Overclock (running stable @ 1.2ghz, currently)
- Install Better Terminal Emulator Pro (though this doesn't require root, you can also dump a lot of useful binaries in /system/xbin; be careful!)
After all of this, you'll have a nice portable linux workstation that you can access directly via CIFS & SSH/SFTP.

nice....i'm not surprise to see these specially from an N900 user.
Oh.....so you overclock? Is the kernel from the I9103 be used? or it's gonna screw up coz glide has keyboard?
EDIT: ooops....i just knew that there is a stock glide kernel posted, I'll test myself, thanks...
EDIT 2: thread says "for Samsung Galaxy R (I9103) only" LOL! nvm
"status indicator"
is there a way to clear out the status indicator in the pull-down notification bar? For awhile I used super status bar, but got tired of it refusing to withdraw. The "indicators" use up half the screen, and are totally unneeded.

Removing T-Mobile CRAPPS from Huawei U8730

Hello fellow XDAers,
My wife replaced her Samsung Gravity Smart with the T-Mobile MyTouch Q, AKA the Huawei U8730 (not the older LG C800 model w/ the same name). She gave me the task of cleaning the junk APKs off of it to de-clutter it.
Rooting the phone was the first task. This method worked perfectly for me without any fuss (the app will return error 64, but after installing Superuser and rebooting, I had root access). I was able to use Titanium to remove much of the crap ware, but the most annoying bits gave the error "cannot find APK." Weird.
After digging around, I took an inventory of the apps in /data and /system.
The T-Mobile junk wasn't there.
I threw busybox on the phone and used the 'find' command, and I found where the apps were hiding: /cust/t-mobile/us/apps, which is a loopback-mounted ext3 partition. I tried to remount it read/write, but got 'permission denied' error. I figured something had the filesystem locked, so I ended all the apps that were running and tried again, but no luck.
However, I was able to remount the volume that held the ext3 image file read/write. It mounts to the /.cust_backup directory.
IMPORTANT NOTE: For those who will be following these steps themselves, at this point you will want to make sure to go into the Applications manager and uninstall any updates downloaded for the crapware you are going to remove. I will explain why below. It's not absolutely critical, but it will save you some head-scratching.
I remounted the partition read/write, grabbed the image file (located in /.cust_backup/image/cust.img), and uploaded the image file to a linux server.
On the linux server, I mounted the image, nuked the unwanted APKs, and unmounted the filesystem.
I created a backup of the original cust.img file, then overwrote the one in /.cust_backup/image
Last step was to reboot the phone, and most of the junkware was gone.
Here's where the head-scratching came in. A couple of the apps were still there, and I didn't know why. I double-checked the phone, and the APKs were in fact deleted. Then I realized: the app had received an update and I was seeing the update. When I uninstalled the update, the uninstall "failed" but the icon still disappeared. However, I had to reboot the phone again to fully remove it.
So, here's the process in a nutshell:
1. Uninstall all app updates for the crapware you plan to remove
2. Root the phone using This method .
3. copy down /.cust_backup/images/cust.img
4. Using a linux system, mount cust.img as a loopback device, then delete the unwanted APKs (they will be in t-mobile/us/apps)
5. Unmount the image (this writes your changes back into the cust.img you mounted in step #3)
6. On the phone, remount /.cust_backup r/w
7. overwrite /.cust_backup/images/cust.img with the modified version
8. Reboot the phone
That's it! Enjoy your uncluttered phone!
I know it's been a while since the original post, but I was wondering if OP has had any problems with the phone since then, or if anyone else has tried this with the Huawei u8730 and had success. My wife also wants all this crap removed from her phone, but she would probably murder me if I bricked it in the process.
Thanks!
Just on a side note here as I'm still using this device. How did you get around the non-working tethering on this device? Both the USB and Wifi hotspot won't work unless you've subscribed to the T-Mobile Smartphone Mobile HotSpot app option on your account? Mine is unlocked and being used with another carrier, but only recently wanted to tether to it so I can't figure out how to correct this one. Also still looking around for any working custom ROM for this. Thx.

[Q] advice for newbie oldie

Hello , sorry for the cryptic title to my first post , My name is Graham , I am in my mid 50s and have had little or no need for mobile phones let alone modern 3rd or 4th generation ones .but I have a Problem that i will put in 3 parts .
first , My partner has learning difficulties and has poor motor skills , up until now she has been getting by with "doro" push button phones . we are due to upgrade her pay monthly package and the Doro,s dont cut it anymore , so i am looking for a phone with dead simple menu system .
thats the first part "a reccomendation for a simple modern 3 or 4g phone" touchscreen would be nice.
second part is that i dont want her running up huge bills as "apps" update themselves etc , and she is happy with her PC for anything internet related anyway , so whatever phone I have for her ,will i be able to remove all apps including the ones that come with it "embedded ?" and disable or password lock internet access to prevent bandwidth being used .
and finally assuming i purchase such a reccommended phone ,and it is possible "without bricking it" to be able to disable and remove apps/internet etc.
has anyone ever done this on a contract phone , ie, would it be legal .
please be gentle ,I have the greatest respect for the techies here , who could not think as slow as me , if they tried . its just i need to sort a phone for her and although i would like a modern phone "leaning towards a sammy" for her ,I dont want to end up with a contract that sucks me in to a system that will be costing me even when the phones idle . (updates/downloads etc.)
thanks for your patients ,
Graham
sorry ,I could not find an icon with a zimmer frame .

First of all welcome to our forum Graham.
S4 mini is a very good phone to start as it has also a menu that turns the main screen simple with few large button for your contacts and applications. The main problem with all those phones is that you can't uninstall all the applications that comes with them unless you have root access. (like administrator) That means you must have some knowledge for that but we can help you also. There are many good guys here who will be glad to help you.
Also you can disable the internet connection so she won't cost you extra money on that. Btw I don't know if it's legal with a contract phone but wth....what's legal or illegal to this world!!
Hope I helped a little.
Best regards
thanks , you say you can help with knowledge regarding "root" access. .is there any risk associated with this process .
also can this phone perform "voice typing " for text. (dictation) it would be great for her if it could .
thanks once again for your help and advice .
There is always a risk in modifying phones.
Voice typing is available in several android phones including the S4 Mini. Unfortunately, it is not always accurate.
You can disable automatic updating of apps and manually disable individual apps from using your Data plan, but still allow those apps to use the Internet when connected to a WiFi network. All without needing root (administrator) access.
thanks for the advice ,I have ordered the phone , and will be back soon for some Advice on settings .
thanks Graham
got the phone , on the box it says Samsung Galaxy S4 mini I9195 , on the back of the box it says GT-I9195 , and on the side of the box next to one of the bar codes it says I9195 PM.
Will i need to access any more info via the phone itself to find out if its compatable to be rooted .
i want to be able to completely uninstall all apps(stock) or at least permanently disable them and completely and permanently disable any internet access too . the phone is for my partner who has asperger syndrome ,and will only be using it for calls and texts , she has been having a bad time using older push button type phones as she has poor motor skills ,she does operate a touchscreen tablet ok though .
I just want to be able to guarantee that she cannot run up a large bill because of software and apps updating without our knowledge .
any help would be appreciated . thanks .

Just go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2364980 and follow the steps 1-9. That should be enough to root the phone and then you can download from Google play Titanium Backup. With that program you can uninstall any application you want. But be careful what to uninstall. You should take a backup first with Titanium Backup before you'll proceed.
To disable any Internet access through your operator, go to Settings- More Networks-Mobile Networks-Access Point Names and tap on your Operator Internet settings and with the left touch button choose Delete APN
Btw if you don't want to root the phone there is another solution to disable the applications you don't want. Just go to Settings-More-Application Manager scroll left to see ALL and then choose any application you don't want to have , and tap Disable. That way you won't loose your warranty. (I recommend it, if you are not experienced with rooting)
thanks , phone now rooted (congratulations your warranty is now void etc, etc.) and i seem to have a new icon "superuser" , though I have had a quick look and cannot see how to delete apps yet ,but i guess disabling them is as good ,and easier to recover from . have already disabled almost all google related stuff (cos I hate it) can i download titanium backup and install it via SD card , as i did with the rootkit ? .
thanks again ,you have been a great help , Graham

Titanium Backup is an application and you can download it from Google play. If you have already disable google play you can enable it again and download it from there. Of course you can search in google for it, to download from a different site, send it to your phone and install it like any application from the phone's file explorer. (not from cwm)
Superuser is for giving permission to applications to have root access.

OK , I have found titanium backup as an "APK" file , so I can send it to the external SD from my PC and use the phones own explorer to find and install it from there ?
I assume i need some additional system file explorer to work with super user . to be able to completely stock apps.
thanks ,and sorry for being so slow on the uptake .

Yes, that's right. You can install it through phone's file explorer. With Titanium you can uninstall all the stock apps. No need for file explorer with root privileges. But if you want one, a very good file explorer with root privilege is ES File Explorer. You can find it as you did with Titanium Backup.

Oh something I didn't mention is to enable USB debugging....go to Settings-More-About Device and tap about 8 times at Build number. This will enable the developer Options menu at Settings-More-Developer options
Go there and check USB debugging.....I think that's the reason Titanium gives you some errors.:fingers-crossed:
Glad I helped you!!! :victory:

Help! Cannot write or delete from internal memory!

Here is my issue I cannot create folders or delete anything on the internal sdcard.
Background info: I just got this gs3 its on boost mobile. I am on NJ3 I used CF-auto-root method to get root. Everything went fine updated Supersu installed a bunch of apps including Titanium Backup and made backups of all apps on the phone. Everything finished fine. I have not deleted any apps yet nor have I installed a custom record very or any ROMs its still!l stock. I have a 64gb sdcard installed which is new and empty so I wanted to put my backups on it but could not. While looking for a fix I noticed that even the default INTERNAL sdcard had a red folder on top with "cannot write to this location" . so now I cannot use TB. It gives an "insufficient storage" message and fails
I then went to ES File Explorer and tried to make a folder on the internal card and could not, also tried to delete and could not !! I have Googled this problem and come up with a number of solutions but most are very old threads. Can anyone give me some help fixing this? The phone seems to otherwise work but I fear it will only get worse with time.
edit I can install apps though even now.
Oh I left out that I did recieve an update for Security policy update. Which I understand has something to do with SElinux. I also found a fix for what appears to be my problem related to this it is;
SU
restorecon -FR /data/media/0
I decided to try it but get a message that -F is invalid
syntax is restorecon (--nRrv-- )
From what I can google the version of restorecon I have on my phone does not include that switch!!! Just my luck, can anyone help me figure out if I can change the binary to an updated one so I can use this?
Well I am disappointed 45 views and not one reply, oh well.
I eventually bit the bullet and did a factory reset from the settings menu, it cleared up the issue and I still had root!! Google reinstalled all my apps and SuperSu disabled Knox for me. I also unchecked auto update for security updates so that Samsung does not send another one to me without my knowledge. also disabled autoupdate for Samsung apps.
know everything is golden again.

Device is Rooted,Still Cannot Remove Bloatware

My device is rooted.
I've read a few other topics regarding this issue, but I'm still confused. As I understand it, using typical uninstall apps such as Titanium or Root Uninstaller do not remove the manufacturer apps from the phone still because of an S feature? I'm new to this process, so please forgive my naive rhetoric. I tried those programs, and as previously stated in other posts, the bloatware comes back.
I installed AROMA file manager to try and manually find the bloatware and delete the physical files, but I can't find the files that I'm looking to delete. I don't mind taking the time and manually deleting these unnecessary files, but, I need some guidance on where to look (or any other viable solutions.)
Thanks for your time!
Download this patch and edit update-binary file what application need remove then flash via recovery mode .

HTC devices are set "S on" from the manufacture. That means there are certain partitions in the nand storage that you can't access without S off ( boot partition, radio partition). The write permissions to the system partition are also not accessible unless you either obtain S off through the Sunshine app which costs $25 or a another option that is not true S off is a write permission mod called WP.MOD_ko that you flash to your phone and it installs a script and changes your phone's SElinux permissions and enables the system partition write permissions to be able to uninstall system apps or fully use certain root apps like Link2SD that also need the system write permissions at bootup.
1st option " fully" unlocks your phone and all partitions. 2nd option just installs scripts to kind of trick your system partition to allow apps to write to it and you to be able to uninstall system apps. It also changes your SElinux permissions from enforcing to permissive so be aware that's disabling the phone's security system. Not a problem unless you get malware but you should be aware of what any mod does to your phone. They have to do that because the mod can't get the phone to be true S off so this is a workaround for that one partition.

Okay cool, thank you for breaking that down for me. So, if I use what pham posted, then that would be a script change? But, even if it were a script change I could still fully uninstall the bloatware, with the risk of a potential virus. Is that correct?

You're welcome. I'm not familiar with what Pham linked you but I'm sure it's similar to the 2nd option I mentioned. The one I was referring to was written for lollipop versions by CaptainTitti I believe is his handle but if you search XDA for our phone WP_MOD.ko that forum should be for kit Kat and a few pages forward is the link to the lollipop version with instructions from CaptainTitti on how to install it. The malware risk is minimal i just wanted to mention it. You have that as well with just rooting and also full S off it's just those 2 leave your SElinux permissions set to enforcing not permissive. Just giving you the info so your informed because no one but us pays for our devices so we should have as much info as possible I believe but good info .
The only one of these I've actually tried is the full S off one with Sunshine so understand and read the whole forum for the other before flashing so you know all the feedback but it does work. Also be aware that the WP_MOD.ko would have to be fully removed and SElinux reenabled to be able to do stock updates and there's not just an " uninstall" box with them. You have to use a root file explorer and remove what was changed and replace with the stock files I believe. Good idea to do a stock Android backup using your custom recovery before flashing any of these, S off excepted as it doesn't mess with doing stock updates. Not knocking the others but these are the things you don't find out about till after you flash them. Now you know before.
Below is the link to the forum page for the kitkat mod and if you scroll down a bit CaptainTiiti had a link to the one for lollipop.

Can't you just use Root Browser, then go to system/app & system/priv-app to remove the bloat? That's what I do on my phone everytime I install a new ROM [emoji1]

I don't know my friend I've never tried that. Maybe he can try it first and see if it works. To be honest I never tried to just remove system apps before i was S off I just read of all the people here on XDA saying they couldn't without S off so I did it. Turns out I switched to debloated CM roms soon after and never even debloated my stock rom, which definitely needed it ! I used Titanium backup to debloat my Samsung tablet after root to get rid of Knox and Samsung junk but it wasn't nand locked like the HTC's are. Can't hurt for him to try it because S off costs and the other mods have their down sides also.
i have completely deleted their bloatware folder, but bloatware will appear if the device boots without root and there is no app folder in user app or system folder but they can run and update normally, maybe it specially designed. Will the above patch zip help me clear the problem completely? i want to clean up the crap, and my device uses system as root so i need to flash modified binary in boot.img separately after signing.
