knox and custom roms - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Just want to clear a few things, with knox we can root our phones now via 2 methods. One knox free and the other triggers it. Does it even matter really if I don't use knox? Sorry for the question been searching and searching for a solid answer before rooting my note 3. What would cause knox to trigger I want to flash a custom recovery and also custom rom and I bet many users are also confused

Flashing a custom recovery triggers knox. Basically your warranty will be void with no way to reset the knox counter.

would a insurance claim work just in case of anything? Will this mess up my phone?

u mean back to tmo? Or replacement? No way to tell, I've sent back rooted phones and nothing happened but I have heard storys.
Sent from my SM-N900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I returned one of my two note 3's to TMO for a replacement due to a cosmetic flaw. It was Knox tripped. I had no problems at all. I did unroot and factory reset before sending it in though. replacement shipped same day and arrived the next.
I left my second line Note 3 on top of my car and drove off. It had a Spigen Slim case on it and stayed on top of my car till I had to brake for a yellow light. The phone landed 5-6 feet in front of my car and the screen cracked. This one was Knox tripped also, and I didn't bother unrooting or resetting it. I sent it in on an insurance claim once I received my replacement. They received it already and everything was fine with that one also.
175.00 deductible via Assurant (TMO Jump insurance)
I filed claim in the morning and they processed my claim and shipped same day. Phone was brand new and arrived the following day. I was impressed with the turnaround.

Yes, insurance claim it doesn't matter if it's rooted. Just like how you can take the phone all broken. Insurance and warranty are two different things.

T-Mobile Warranty and how to not void it

I called T-Mobile asking what voids a warranty and the lady told me that I can do anything I want to my phone and it doesn't void the warranty! As long as it isn't physical or liquid damage.
I think that's pretty cool because from what I've read, doing anything like that to your phone voids your warranty.

Well, she may had not been aware, but rooting your phone and installing custom roms also voids your warranty
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
yeah, probably.
too good to be true hehe
Custom ROMs.. rooting voids warranty... physical damage, lost, stolen, water damage is all covered
Under warranty.. I believe $130.. since assurion handles those this now.

Warranty covers only things that are defective, like screen dieing or speakers going out things like that...
Damage and water damage cracked screen and things like that are covered ONLY if you pay for insurance .. and its a 130$
Rooting will VOID your warranty but won't affect insurance ..
Also, don't listen to T-Mobile reps... they don't know much and will steer you wrong.

I thought there was something on XDA TV about how these big companies wanna act like rooting voids your warranty but if call them and know what your talking about then they would have to complete a warranty repair. It's a episode from a few months back. Look it up. Good stuff.

This is true. I bricked my phone because of a custom ROM that was not built correctly. I luckily had warranty still on it and they sent me a brand new one FREE OF CHARGE!!
if you get the 8 dollar plan, physical damage and water damage is eh. I think it's an amazing deal, does anyone not agree?
If you have that plan and do mess something up, you could always run it over with your car (or something a little more civil)

Same here. I flashed a custom ROM. Don't know how I bricked it. Can't get into download mode with the three button methods. The phone just started and then get into boot loop right away. Brought it to T-mobile store and play dump a little bit. The guy at the store order my replacement for $20 processing fee. Got my new phone last week. They received my return this Monday. Have not hear from them so I asummed it is okay. I got lucky because my phone will be out of warranty on October 24th.

When you do a warranty on the Black Galaxy S II right now, they give you the option of another Black S II or an HTC One S. It's been that way for a week or two. The reason they are doing that is because of low replacement inventory for the Black S II. If you choose the S II, your replacement will be on back order instead of the usual next day delivery. The HTC One S can be sent next day. The White S II does not have this option. Not sure why they are not offering the White S II as a replacement for the Black S II, except that they may be trying to conserve inventory on it, as it outsold the One S.

I tend to buy all of my phones brand new, sometimes lightly used and unsubsidized. TMo is great since they charge a decent price if you don't want the phone subsidy. I usually stick with the manufacturers warranty.
All I will say is if you brick your phone, make sure you hard brick it if you are going to a T-Mobile and getting it replaced. I hard bricked mine the first time I tried installing a I-9100 rom on my T989 because I thought "Galaxy S2" meant all of them on the CyanogenMod website (yes, my first time flashing a rom). They replaced it since it was under the 20 day complete return (if its under 20 days they will replace it with a BRAND NEW one instead of a refurbished) and it came overnighted (unfortunately I bricked it friday and talked with them so I had to wait til monday because they were closed on weekends. If not under the 20 days they will give you a 20$ processing fee and a refurbished phone that may look new but it certainly isnt.

I sent in my phone for warranty after i got repeated bootloops didnt lknow about knox

I am freaking out now. What if they deny my warranty? They have already sent me a new phone. What do i do? Is it a way to reset knox? I have shipped it out already. Should i call UPS and have them send it back to my house so i can reset knox then reship it? I used this method to root.

I also installed twrp. What do i do?
If you send it to samsung they won't fix anything since the warranty is already voided but if u send it to tmobile you are fine they I'll exchange the device no problem.

I sent it to Tmobile under buyers remorse since i only had it for 4 days and they sent me a new one.

I just wanna set the record straight! (warrenty u.s.)

Ok i know if my Knox counter changes to anything higher than 0x0 it gets voided right... Ok cool but voided/rejected by who? Samsung? Or tmobile's warrenty exchange? Because from what i read everyones talking this repair this n that "i sent out for repair.." Ok but im not sending anything for repair its a WARRENTY EXCHANGE due to usb port problems... Does it get voided by tmobile? Please and thank you
Btw: i search all throught the forums and threads of knox for this and havent found anyone talking about the "WARRANTY EXCHANGE" like i said before ive read about ppl getting their device sent to repair rejected... But what about when they send u the front piece (no battery no back plated **refurbished**) and u send it back in a white box... Thats what i dont see anyone talking about...
Once again thanks in advance i just wanted to get that straightened out...

We are not positive if KNOX is used for warranty purposes. Warranty exchange can be done in person at a Tmobile store or having it shipped out. It is best to go to a store and try and get it replaced. A lot of the clerks are clueless about warranty and you shouldn't have any problems with an exchange.

As long as you Odin the stock ROM you should be fine.
They don't seem to really care. They just want us to know they have the upper hand.
I've warranty exchanged a s3 and an s4 recently and just odin'd to stock.
No problems.

I never do the exchange thru a T-mobile store. I asked once about it to one of the reps at the store and they said i have to call (mytouch days lol) so ever since then I've always used the one year warrenty with Tmobile.. Not insurance or asurion... Simply..One year warrenty.. So they first serve the white box with the device then i send mine back in the same box within 7 days but i wanna know will they care about knox? Since its not a repair?..
Thanks in advance!

I haven't exchanged any with the knox counter triggered, But I can tell you this much, a T-mobile rep is more concerned about water damage than anything else. that's why the 1st thing they do is to take ur battery out and check little white sticker it turns red/pinkish when exposed to water.
other than that u shouldn't have a problem, just odin back full stock and and take it back .. I would try it but I just replaced my old S4 a couple days ago and its working fine.
just go in there like a boss and demand an exchange... LOL JK

Just got my replacement phone and....

It unfortunatly came with knox... now what if i dont care to trip knox... will having knox effect the way i glash roms... or can i even flash roms? [Ive searched everywhere for my answer and all i get is mixed answers...] some say i cant flash with knox... others are talking in threads like they tripped knox and flashing roms... HELP PLEASE... thanks in advanceee!
btw from all the reading i ha e done it seems that a "Tripped knox counter" only affects the ppl sending it thru repair and not warrenty... please if someone can shed light on this... again... thanks in advance!

Your warrenty (The phone no longer powers on, send me a new one) is voided by tripping Knox.
Your insurance (The $9 a month you may or may not pay for damage or loss) is not voided.
Please search next time. There are literally 30 threads asking this exact question. Searching avoids filling up the forum with repeated questions, which makes finding unique questions more difficult.

Let me rephrase that...
Tripping knox is SUPPOSED to void your warrenty. Many people are finding that Samsung/T Mobile aren't properly checking the Knox status with a warrenty claim and are honoring the warrenties anyway. But it's not a guarentee.

T Mobile is going to care once Samsung stops saying Knox tripped phones back from T Mobile. Remember, it's not T Mobile that is repairing the borken devices are reselling them as refurbished. Samsung is still doing that. T Mobile just asks as a middle man in that process. The warrenty is still Samsung's. And when Samsung tells T Mobile they won't accept any more knox tripped phones, T Mobile is going to start checking more closely.
That said, the warrenty is still invalid per the user agreement with Knox tripped. T Mobile could decide tomorrow or 6 months from now to start checking. If they do they are well within the law to deny a warrenty claim on a knox tripped phone. Just because they are ignoring it now doesn't mean they have to.

You're very welcome! If I were you though, I would wait and see that it is a confirmed "working" method. So many variables involved, like KNOX, better to be safe than sorry.
I have a friend that manages tmobile. He said that mobile CANNOT refuse an issured costumer. Because there is signed documents before Knox was even in the picture... If someone tries to refuse it. Tell them to show you some type of paper work that you have signed that says so. Or ask them to pull up your original. Contract/ or the insurance rules from day one.

And if that doesn't work, you can call the Insurance Commission in your state. Every state has one. They regulate ALL insurance matters.
The T Mobile insurance is just a normal property and casualty policy. Insurance commissions do not play around and they have absolute authority in a state to force an insurance company to pay a claim if you can prove they have no valid reason to deny it.
I am a licensed insurance rep in several states and I have dealt with insurance commissions all over the country. So I am absolutely positive about this. Every state has a process to dispute a denial for any policy, no matter how small.
All that said, I doubt you would ever have to fake it that far. Especially since the policy covers loss as much as damage. If they did deny the claim, just lose it and file the claim as a loss.
Now the warrenty is a whole different animal that is covered very differently. All different rules and hardly any governmental protections.
Sent from your phone. You should be more careful where you leave that thing.

[Q] best thing to tell t mobile to get warranty exchange

I have a note 3 and the screen is scrached and the internal screen is broken but still working and I cant really use the spen n just want a new one but I'm not sure if t mobile will replace it I still have insurance and it's under warranty but it's Knox 0x1
Sent from my SM-N900T using xda app-developers app
I'm pretty sure they don't check Knox. They just look at the condition of your device.
Yea but what should I say to cash in the insurance will they do it if I say the screen is broke?
Sent from my SM-N900T using xda app-developers app
If it's a manufacturer defect, then you pay for shipping of the new device, that's it. If you physically broke the screen, then you're paying the deductible. Scratches, Knox, Tmobile could care less about.
The screen is scratched. Just pay for insurance and say it broke.
TWEAKED N3
I had a rooted Galaxy S3 that was having horrible connection issues so I called and asked for a new phone and sent in my rooted one and they didn't ever even notice...if they did they must of not cared because it never got mentioned to me. You could I called T-Mobile the other day telling them that after the kit kat update my phone wouldn't turn on and they said to bring it in and would overnight me a new phone. I ended up not having to do that, but you could maybe get away with purposely bricking it or whatever you gotta do to get it to not power on....
I sent in my rooted note 3 to tmobile and they replaced it no problem. Although it didnt have any physical damage. I think only samsung checks knox counter. If you still have insurance on it they should allow you to exchange it.
Sent from my SM-N900T using xda app-developers app
Say it was stolen and then throw it in the trash.
