[Q] Battery and Internal Storage Question - Sony Xperia M

Hi all,
I'm considering purchasing a Xperia M, and before I do, I would like some questions answered about it.
1. How is the battery life in your opinion?
2. Are the 'poor' viewing angles that are constantly mentioned in the reviews a problem to you?
3. If I got a microSD card, can I store music, photos and videos on there, but all application data on the phone? This might sound like a silly question, but I have had no experience in having a microSD card in an Android phone before, so I don't know how it works.
4. Does this phone work with SDXC cards? i.e. 64Gb and above cards?
Thanks in advance :good:

The battery life of this phone is excellent in its class. It gives me 2 days of usage, and i keep 3G internet always ON.
Viewing angles are quite fine. I didnt have any personal problems.
Yeah, you can store all your music, photos, videos on SD, but application Data will be on Internal SD card. To move it to SD card, you'll have to root your phone.
It only supports upto 32GB Acc to GSM arena, I am using a 32GB Class 10 Ultra card from Sony, and i should say it gives me speeds close to 40MBps..
Hope this answers your question..

1.Battery life is quite good than many other phone...
2.Viewing angles is ok anyway it shouldn't be a problem at all..
3.you can store a lot of music and photos in it i guess it supports around 32 gb of external card
but applications will be installed in internal card.If you need some basic apps then its fine but if for heavy hd game purpose then it will have a problems..:crying:
4No
5.Camera is main drawback in this device. It gives a lots of blue color. If you love blue its for you :laugh::laugh: Maybe it will get fixed soon

3. If you want APP2SD there's a good guide on the forums to swap the memory.
This message was brought to you by my Sony Xperia M (C1905), using the XDA app.

1. Battery good for me, wifi all day, can live more than 1 day
4. Someone on this forum told could use with 64GB SDHX

@Antrikos48 is correct.
The Sony white paper states there is only support for up to 32GB cards.
The 32GB cards are normally formatted as FAT32 by default and fall into the usable range with the default cluster size.
64GB cards are formatted as exFAT and could NOT be used in an XPERIA M without being reformatted.
However, if you format a 64GB microSD card to FAT32 with a cluster size of 64KB I have shown that it does work (in my case) on a XPERIA M.
The caveat is that if it doesn't work in your phone, you only have yourself to blame as it is NOT supported as designed my Sony.
My XPERIA M has root access with a LOCKED bootloader.
• Viewing angle is fine for 99% of the time.
• Haven't tested battery life with XPERIA M root access and SetCPU screen-off profiles, but wouldn't expect anything less than two to three days under light use.
[see battery test]
REMOVABLE/replaceable battery, battery life shouldn't be a problem.
• My first reaction is that the camera is a disappointment, but haven't really used it extensively to get an informed option.
• External MicroUSB USB flash and SD card readers are supported directly attached to phone.
• Adreno 305 is a VERY good GPU for an entry level phone and will be interesting when/if it gets Android v4.3 to see what OpenGL ES 3.0 support provides.
• Dual core S4 chipset CPU is good and only slightly slower than my over-clocked dual-core S3 chipset XPERIA S 1.7GHz
• The bottom of the screen is taken up with the 'soft' navigation buttons, instead of being outside the screen. (personal preference)
• Phone is very light and a pleasure to handle.
• Assume MHL external connection is a no go until shown otherwise. MicroUSB port can't do power and data at the same time, which is a bad indicator.
• Sony DK10 Media Dock ONLY provides power. It can not provide USB data and power at the same time. Really means it doesn't work.
• Aten 4 port USB switch is supported †
• Targus 7 port USB powered hub is supported
• WD 320GB HDD is supported via a power USB hub
• Logitech USB Unifying mouse supported (sans back key and context menu on mouse) M950,M325 and M905 tested
• Logitech USB Unifying keyboard supported (Esc - Back and Alt-Menu - context menu) K800 and K400 keyboards tested
• The supplied microUSB power is greater than an XPERIA S as I can mounted USB flashdrives on the XPERIA M which give a power consumption error on the XPERIA S. Still can't mount a USB powered WD USB HDD directly to the phone. You need a powered hub for that.
† - With the XPERIA M connected to an Aten 4 port USB switch it becomes one of four devices that can selectively use all supported USB devices connected in a desktop environment. For me this feeds a Targus 7 port powered USB hub and a U2410 24" monitor with additional USB ports AND the SD/MMC card reader in the U2410 monitor is available too.
WiFi 2.4GHz and 5GHz are both supported.
iPerf test follows
------------------------------------------------------------
Server listening on TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 85.3 KByte (default)
------------------------------------------------------------
[ 4] local 172.16.nnn.nnn port 5001 connected with 172.16.nnn.nnn port 43645

[ 5] local 172.16.nnn.nnn port 5001 connected with 172.16.nnn.nnn port 43646
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[ 5] 0.0-10.0 sec 130 MBytes 108 Mbits/sec
The 5GHz WiFi shown above goes way beyond anything I was expecting.
I observe a connect speed of 150Mbits and a throughput of ~108Mbits/sec..
That's impressive considering the link speed is measured at full-duplex and the WiFi throughput only operates at half-duplex.
Well done Sony, I think this deserves an enthusiastic golf clap.

One day of no real use, just carried around and shown to a few people and reading a few txt and emails.
Screen was on 23mins during the 24hr period.
Google Play Service is up to it's usual tricks of holding the system awake, but does fade away when other processes are used more extensively.
The phone signal seems to be pretty good as other XPERIA phones I own struggle to hold a 100% 'good' signal which uses less power.
See other attached pics for detailed break down of battery/system use.

Just took a few quick pics on three Sony Ericsson phones.
12MP Sony XPERIA S [JB 4.1.2]
5MP Sony XPERIA C1905 [JB 4.1.2]
2MP Sony Ericsson K610i
The settings are the same on all cameras
Not the best photos(wont be winning any awards), but you can see the slight blue tint in the C1905 picture.
Worryingly the SE K610i takes a pretty good photo for a 2MP camera

Anyone using a Class 10 or Ultra SD?

I'm serious about my portable music and am trying to find the best combination of Xperia phone and SD to match an iPod Classic in file transfer speed and audio quality but I'm mostly concerned with data transfer for now.
I'm using a class 4 32GB Sandisk and want to shoot myself :crying:
My iPod Classic laughs at the speed. :crying:
Anyone using a Class 10 or any kind of Ultra SD? How's that going? Do you own/owned any portable music devices like an iPod to compare with? All I know is my Classic can transfer at least 1 song per second, usually more, with over 32GBs of music that's great or if just transferring my newest 30 songs. With my class 4 SD in my Xperia it takes about 4-5 seconds per song and I would prefer to bounce it off the wall :fingers-crossed: :good:
I'm planning to get the Xperia Sola and upgrading my SD, (upgrading headphones after that) but I'm just looking for feedback?

Use a microSD USB adapter or SDcard adapter to get 10Mb/s, if I do use the usb cable the speed is like 2mb/s
I use a Samsung Class 10 32GB SD and the speeds are very Good.

I don't get it. What's so bad about class 4 microSD cards? I use Sandisk 16GB Class 4 aswell, I don't cry about lag, because I don't have it. Transferring songs isn't that slow, I don't do it often either so no problems with it.
Or is it just that people keep wanting more and more?

Is it just that people don't read entire posts?
As I posted above already, the issue is that I've been using various dedicated media devices for years which have consistently performed at far higher data transfer speeds. I'll say it again:
I have 32GB of music, if I transfer with an Apple device it transfers at least 1 song per second. For a large music collection, it does this very quickly as you can see. If I'm transferring the newest 20 or 30 songs in my collection, it does that in about 30 35 seconds.
If I asked my last phone or my current Android phone to do this, it takes about 4-5 seconds to transfer ONE song (or podcast). Whether it's a few minutes for just a few songs, or a few hours to transfer my whole collection, it's terrible performance and tedious.
Which brings me to my question about data speeds. I'm sure someone suggested before that it could be partly Apple cables being designed for optimum transfer speeds. I completely forgot about SD classes though, and I found the Sandisk Class 10 Ultra transfer up to 30mbps. I checked on eBay and they are not that expensive - about €30 for for 32GB. I'll get that soon and report back!
p.s. I just asked Sony about this and they said they've tested classes 2 and 4 with their phones and said that a class 10 will likely not work with their phones so not to purchase! Hmm. Mind you, many people here have bought 64GB SD cards when Sony said 32GB is the highest that you should use. I'll find someone here using a class 10!

One of the problems - the chip. Phone's motherboard and it's transfer speed. It takes a longer 'distance' for the data to travel - from the computer, through the cable, through the chip, onto the SD.
Apple devices don't use SD cards, they have built-in memory chips, which have a lot faster r/w speeds, also they use the full max speed of USB 2.0(35 megabytes per second), microUSB has a bit lower rate of speed, and certain compression to transfer faster, which doesn't happen on other devices.
On the internet, there are sometimes written only maximum speeds(like you said - up to). The Class shows only minimum speed, Class 10 having minimum of 10 MB/s for write operation.
Android devices are not the same as Apple. Everything can't be the same, because it has been built different.
And FYI, I did read the whole post.
Thank you very much for explaining that :fingers-crossed: - that was exactly the extra kind of detail I wanted to understand the technology better - which in turn allows me to make better purchases.
What is roughly speaking, the best performance you can achieve with Android using an SD? What is the best performance a micro-USB can provide? On my new laptop, I made sure to get a USB 3.0 port but I'm guessing I won't be able to use that with Android until compatible devices are released. Devices with on-board storage as large as I'd like are uncommon and very expensive, so SD it is. Would a class 10 SD be the best you could get? I would be happy with a slight decrease in Apple-type performance, but 1 song every 4-5 seconds is too bad. Essentially, what I'm trying to do is to integrate my phone and media player in one device, without paying a fortune for an iPhone.
I just found this thread with some of the same intention: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674373
Perhaps, better micro USB cable such as: http://www.monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=4989 + class 10 SD = mission kind of accomplished?

A 32GB Class 10 SDHC is the largest and fastest kind of SD card compatible with Arc/Arc S. Some people have had luck with larger cards, but officially SDXC isn't supported on 2011 Xperia phones.
Phones currently don't support USB 3.0 as they don't have the processing power or data bandwidth to support USB 3.0 transfer speeds. You're hard pressed to find anything that maxes out USB 2.0 apart from dedicated storage - the two devices that exceed USB 2.0 speeds that I own are an external hard drive and a card reader that I use with high-speed CompactFlash. I usually get 10MB/s writes using this with my Class 10 MicroSD.
To be honest, trying to write at high speeds through the phone's system is an exercise in futility - just get a good card reader, it doesn't have to be a USB 3.0 model (which are usually rather expensive and aimed at photographers) as SDHC maxes out around 10-12MB/s writes anyway.
I got a 32 GB class 10 card with my phone when I got it. I move all apps to SD as much as possible, and also listen to a lot of music. I also take a lot of pictures and videos. So for me it was just calculated in as part of the cost of the phone when I bought it - it was a no-brainer.

You lucky thing, a 32GB class 10 SD with the phone? Hah that's great. Well how do you like the performance?
My plan is: new phone with excellent audio tech+class 10 SD+great earphones=very happy me. I'll have the phone next week, finally.
So I have a 32 GB Class 6 and runs well
YEs i used 32GB class 10 in my neo v, but you always to fomrat it when you put it in your device

Well I have the same card, and I never managed to cross 7MB/s, with large files, music or videos. Not on my old system, not on my new system. Not on Windows XP, not on Ubuntu, not on Windows 7. Not on 6 different USB ports on my old system, and not on 8 USB ports on my new system. Two different USB cables are tested also.
So I'm really curious to know how could anyone manage to get 15MB/s with this phone.
Do you mind to post screenshot while transferring data at 15MB/s?

[Review] Samsung 64GB Pro UHS-1 card

I got myself a Samsung 64GB Pro UHS-1 card directly from Korea. It's one of the newer 20nm cards rated at 20mB/s write and 70mB/s read speeds.
I got it from this seller on eBay for $91. I got it within a week from ordering it, which is quite good considering I'm on the other side of the world.
Compared to the SanDisk 64GB UHS-1 card, on the phone itself I'm getting:
With SD Card Tester app:
SanDisk: 9.25mB/s write, 12.95mB/s read
Samsung: 13.71mB/s write, 12.78mB/s read
Edit: I increased the readahead to 1024K and I'm getting 18mB/s read on the Samsung.
The SanDisk card shows up as 59.47GB, the Samsung one as 58.53GB on the phone.
Seems disappointing considering the advertised speeds. However this is caused by the host controller on the phone seemingly limited to 100mbit/s on both cards, so for people who want to expect a big boost here, don't. I guess we won't see better scores until Exynos 5 devices come out.
Tested on my laptop reader with an adapter:

It looks like the reader itself is the bottleneck here too, however the SanDisk card is clearly outmatched by almost a factor of two by the Samsung card, especially in the write tests.

Speeds may be twice as much but so is Samsungs price. I got my Sandisk for $46. I think I can wait for the Samsung price to come down.

Yes and is the Note 2 or any other available device really in need of that extra speed? I doubt it does. When the price comes down then it will be a good buy for phones.
no phone supports uhs 1, so you won't get the advertised speed.
try to get a uhs 1 reader and try again.

I don't know what the hardware differentiation is between normal and UHS speed modes, but the host device driver in the phone does support and uses UHS.

That's an up to advertisement, it doesn't guarantee anything. It also doesn't explain why the Samsung one is twice as fast as my SanDisk, because they would be both be limited at the same speed of the host controller if that's the main cause.
The host controller driver in the phone runs at SDHCI spec v2 while v3 is the new version, however the speed is determined by the host controller bus width and speeds and are independent of the spec beyond the minimum requirements. The SDHCI on this SoC is also the HSMMC which controls the internal memory and that one is capable of 62-65mB/s read speeds. If anything, the USB 2.0 bandwidth limit is more of a problem.

it's upto you to use compatible and supported hardware, it doesn't matter if you pc has the supported driver, do you have a uhs 1 card reader, if not , the speed is not reachable.
for the sandisk ultra it state upto 30, i have a 32 and 64, both reach 38mb/s.
you cannot test full speed on the phone, it a card reader to pc that you need, as i said, no phone supports uhs 1.
if you want faster card, and you do need a uhs 1 card reader, try the sandisk extreme pro at 95mb/s.

I'm talking about the phone's host controller and that's the spec it is running at extracted from the hardware, and on that the Samsung is still faster, it's an apples to apples comparison regardless if the top speeds are limited or not.
Those extreme pro's are nice, but come only in maximum of 16GB and are outlandishly unavailable or expensive, they're the same price as the 64GB ones.

thats why i'm waiting to see if a ep 64 will arrive, as stated, no phone will allow you to reach near the stated speed, unless one i made to support uhs 1 or the new uhs 2 which isn't released yet..

If so then why buy the expensive SD cards to put on the phones that not yet have the needed support in order to have the max. speeds?
In fact you put the card into the fone most of the time, not to the reader into the PC - so the card's speed when plugged into the fone is the thing that is most important, not the speed when you test in ur PC.
=> Wait until the prices of the new SD drop & the new support for them come out for the fones

I have just got myself a Transcend microSDHC Ultimate 32GB to try out; have been using the SD Ultra 16GB (both Class-10)
The seller has both cards for the same money but he points out the TS as he told the speed was more stable when copying big files (like HD Movies).
Have checked the serial in: http://vn.transcend-info.com/Support/SerialCheck_tw.asp?Func1No=3&Func2No=207
Initial impression, not tested yet.
- Sandisk: the outer box and also the card itself to me was better, also the adapter was printed with characters, numbers and Made in Taiwan; the box of the Trans printed Made in TW; while in the microSD itself: Made in Korea; the adapter was not printed with anything.
The performance and stability is to be tested when I get back home The SD has served me well for like a year.

Of all the card trandscend, adata and sandisk tend to be the most reliable and stable cards available, whiles toshiba and kingston has the speed, but the speed do fluctuate alot.
sandisk cards are made by themselves, whiles transcend are usually rebadged from sandisk and other manufacture.
adata also has cards made from sandisk and themselves.
kingston is really really bad, stay away from it. SanDisk might be slower but it is solid and yes Transent is very very good, stable and fast.
Transcend Class 10 MicroSD (not the UHS I version)
Quite impressive

thanks for the review! but just an fyi for anyone out there thats thinking of buying a samsung card. average at the time of this post is that the cards are for 90 online. I found on another thread that someone bought the card off frys.com for 70. its the us brand model too
Here's the SanDisk card as measured on my MacBook Air (mid-2012), the card reader is PCIe based so there shouldn't be any bottlenecks.
Instinctively I'm thinking I have a bad card because I reckon it should go faster than this. But meh, I'm pretty happy with those results.

I get 13/38
AndreiLux said:
Tested on my laptop reader with an adapter:
...
It looks like the reader itself is the bottleneck here too, however the SanDisk card is clearly outmatched by almost a factor of two by the Samsung card, especially in the write tests.

Hey! Thanks for checking in! I came up with an idea for an invention that I think will be a huge success! My idea involves developing hardware for specific, ios, Android and WM8 smartphones (Tablets included), to increase storage capacity. From ios to android consumers want more storage for their mobile devices. The potential to have 500GB of storage on-the-fly for your iphone 5 or Galaxy S III is immense.
My invention connects seamlessly to your smartphone for added flexibility and mobility - you can workout or even go jogging without the use of a flimsy otg cable or unnecessary WiFi hard drive. One of my biggest hurdles will be developing this tech in a very small footprint that connects seamlessly with your target device. Files are stored locally via SD or microSD without the use of cloud storage (Cloud storage can be your worst enemy if your not on a unlimited data plan). Alongside having all your media in one place, we also support OTG + Power so get the extra juice you need to run all your devices.
With progressive HD content and smartphones being effective laptop replacements, having more storage has become essential. My biggest concern is making sure this invention is affordable, pricing this tech at around 40 to 50 USD I feel is both reasonable and affordable - so you can enjoy all your media anywhere you go!
Invention details:
- Maximum Storage capacity of 256GB not including your internal storage
(Depending on your device you can can max out your storage capacity to 384GB).
- Change SD or microSD on the fly (SD SDHC SDXC microSD microSDHC microSDXC)
- Unit will allow for flexibility and mobility
- All your data will be stored locally
- Supports OTG + Power
Other supported products in the future:
- Samsung Galaxy nexus
- Nexus 4
- Nexus 7
- Nexus 10
- Droid Razr
- Samsung Galaxy S II
- Samsung Galaxy Note
- Samsung Galaxy Note II
- iphone
- ipad
More Devices to come...
I want to start an open discussion about the future of this invention, please leave your feedback and any insights you have. This invention will be in the market in 3 months time starting with the Samsung Galaxy S III for all carriers.
UPDATE:
Im working on a new tech start up, I need a skilled individual proficient in product viz & 3D Design to help kick-start a large scale Indiegogo & Internet campaign. Due to the nature of this project i can only share very little until i have you sign a Non-disclosure agreement. pm me for more details.
Indiegogo is an amazing platform funded by the people for the people, with the help of this great community here at XDA lets make this campaign a success! All details and specification will be released once product viz & 3D Designs are completed.
Thank you to everyone who's supporting this project. Without the great community here at XDA, I would never have made it this far. Thank you!
Sounds awesome. Do you have pictures? I can always use more storage. How much would something like this cost?
MOD EDIT: Please don't quote the entire OP...
Looking AWESOME!
I though my 32gb sd + 16gb on board was enough but sometimes i need more space...
I can't carry my external disk wherever i go!
Sounds pretty good, but can you give us more details?
What's the shape, is it a multislot case maybe or something like that?
I'm really curious :cyclops:
Thanks!

No pictures yet but I will have the first fully functional prototype ready to go in one month. My biggest concern is to make sure this product is affordable. At launch i will not include a SD or microSD card due to high cost flash memory. The unit will cost around 40 to 50 USD. I will include a built in SD & microSD card reader compatible with these standards: SD SDHC SDXC microSD microSDHC microSDXC

I'm limited in the exact details that i will give until i receive my pending patent. The finished product will be slim, lightweight and connects seamlessly to your device.
The device is also multislot and compatible with these standards: SD SDHC SDXC microSD microSDHC microSDXC
IMO this sounds VERY promising for $40 even if I have to use my own SD or micro SD card. Can't wait to see what it actually looks like.

Not to thread crap, but what advantage will this have l over the $5 SD to micro adapter I bought to put a 128gb SD card in my phone?
if the price is reasonable and the profile is slim it sounds like you've got a winner

My invention will have otg support and allow you to use both SD and microsd cards on the fly. Most importantly you wont have an otg cable or adapter dangling from the bottom of your phone, potential damaging your micro usb port or constantly disconnecting. My invention will work so well you wont even notice its there allowing you effortlessly enjoy all your movies, music and pictures anywhere you go!

$40-$50...that seems reasonable...really interested, any chance of posting a picture of it? Maybe render an image of what you have in mind using a computer? Maybe have it be like a case with slots that connects through the micro USB port, sorta like a rechargeable battery case.

The adapter I have doesn't hook up like that. It plugs directly into the micro SD slot via ribbon cable, and is contained completely under the back cover. But, I can see the value in what you're talking about. If I may make a suggestion, if it is like a phone case, put a kickstand on the back.

This invention would be low profile and connect seamlessly to your smartphone or tablet. My invention will allow for flexibility and mobility, you can workout or even go jogging without the use of a flimsy otg cable or an unnecessary WiFi hard drive that has a limited battery capacity. [Review] SanDisk Ultra Dual USB Drive -OTG

Hi XDA friends today bought the SanDisk Ultra Dual USB Drive and was quite impressed with the performance of it and easy to use OTG function no more OTG cable and hassle just plug and play, so sharing my thoughts on the same as was keen to check out the first Sandisk dual usb drives after its announcements Feb. 11, 2014.
BENEFITS
So,the dual USB Drives comes with a usb 2.0 on one end and micro-USB connector on the other, making it easy for file transfer between Android phone (supporting OTG) and PC. For people who are even looking for more space on their phone its a great option for them to grab one as per their need and load in music, videos, app etc.
Another useful thing about the dual usb is you can use it with your custom recovery ex.TWRP or Philz and flash Rom zip and make backup of your current rom on the breeze just by plugging it to your android device no more hassle of connecting OTG cable just need app like StickMount or Nexus Media Importer from Playstore.

PACKAGING
Well the packaging as usual was in a cardboard type pack and easy to open .
AVAILABILITY
16GB, 32GB and 64GB
ORGANIZINZ FILES
Sandisk has come up with an app SanDisk Memory Zone available on Playstore
SanDisk Memory Zone offers you more memory management functionality than any other application available for the Android phone.
SanDisk Memory Zone puts you in complete control. Manage and backup both your local and cloud memory with one free app. Move files back and forth from your memory card to select cloud services, or from the cloud directly to your phone. Cloud services supported: Box, Dropbox, Google Docs, Picasa, SugarSync, SkyDrive and Facebook.
CONS
Well a good light usb drive and easy to use with dual support for pc and android device, but I found the USB cap to be bit messy to use as it comes with slide in functionality and is made of plastic and both the slot cannot be slide in at the same time as the slider gets stuck in between and to add on when in case of sliding back its bit tricky to lock the slider properly need a bit of finger effort to pull it back out.
But I consider this better then losing the cap of the drive as the ones which comes with open cap functionality,I always tend to loose cap somewhere or the other so for me this drawback act as an advantage.
READ WRITE SPEED
Well you can see that in the pic as tested on my lappy, so you can conclude the rest
WARRANTY
It comes with 5 years limited warranty.
WINDUP
All in all a must buy !!!!
Got it from Snapdeal at just Rs 562 (16Gb Model) after ordering from snapdeal App and getting extra 100 off.

If you're running stock, you need an app to mount it. If you don't have/want root, nexus media importer should work. If you have root, stickmount works well.
I had the corsair voyager go (before I lost it, grrrrrr), and it was great. A bit bigger but USB 3.0 and very fast on my laptop with USB 3.0 (140MB/sec reads, 16MB/sec writes).
However, it was slower in TWRP than a cheap verbatim usb 2.0 slider model with otg cable in creating a backup.
Write speeds within Android OS were at 14-16MB/sec, very respectable.
Perfect, thanks! Just downloaded the app and ordered the SanDisk drive.
I bought the Meenova a few months back and I love it. Its similar to your SanDisk, but you can insert any size SD card into the Meenova. I like the fact that you can keep all the Rom backups on it. Also very cool to be able to watch a movie while it's plugged into phone. You can't go wrong with either USB OTG's.

The meenova is interesting for sure. My only real gripe with it is the full USB adapter looks like a complete afterthought and ruins the form factor for me. I wish the meenova was slimmer as well.
I have the Kingston micro duo on order, see if that works for me. I much prefer having both connectors on the drive at all times.

Very nice review helpful I'd really like a direct solution like this without wires, but a question I have tried various cables otg, but through media importer Nexus and Nexus USB OTG File Manager does not recognize me the pen (formatted correctly) are really frustrated because even friends with galaxy S4 recognize it right away ..... any suggestions? I have yet to root maybe that's what?
With this pendrive I could properly read and write files from a pendrive nexus and vice versa? without root or with root only?
Thank you!
p.s. You can also set an option for the decryption of files in pendrive just connected to the nexus?
I've a wireless one. The main benefits is it takes micro SD cards so it's unlimited in size. Just change the card

Well me too was facing the same issue almost tried 4 different otg but it always gave up and never detected in recovery whereas mount on ROM worked fine and I needed it badly on the recovery end it makes flashing and stuff so easier so found later it was an issue with my pen drive as just got hand over my wife's pen drive and tried connecting and yes it worked .
So later ordered the sandisk dual bcoz of the small form factor and easy to use and from then my life become so easy no more connecting wire and stuff as I do test a lot of ROMS via multirom so it works great, even tried to boot from USB and trust me it was quick so all in all a great buy and worth for every android user and the 16gig space is enough for external use like watching movie, listening to songs while on journey

Has anyone here experience with the competitors (Kingston DT MicroDuo or Transcend JetFlash 380S).
I'm not sure whether there is any noteworthy difference between them. I'd like to know your views if you have experience with two or more of those dual USB sticks.
I use the Patriot Stellar. It's the only USB 3.0 otg stick that I know of right now.
Using this one off ebay which also has USB 3.0, waterproof, etc.
My Sandisk Dual USB OTG works fine on my Nexus 5. Only gripe is the fact that the official Sandisk android app doesn't work as expected since the app itself is unable to detect the USB device on the phone.

I have the DT MicroDuo.
It's a small drive, fits pretty well and no issues with the Spigen Slim Armor. The Corsair Voyager Go was a very tight fit with the Spigen, it never sat fully, but enough for the pins to make the connection.
Kingston gets very hot, I'll have to take my temp gun to it soon to see how hot it gets. Hotter than the Voyager Go.
It's not a fast drive, Crystal Diskmark placed it at around 12MB/sec sequential writes, and 21MB/sec sequential reads.
Looking to either get the Silicon Power X20, or the DT MicroDuo USB 3.0 version (70MB/sec reads, 15MB/sec writes). Price is around the same as the DTDuo USB 2.0 version.
Corsair has one too, and it seems to pretty highly rated

Any idea what speed MicroSD cards the HTC 10 will support? It'd be nice to get a high-spec UHS card to use the expandable storage! Coming from a Galaxy S4 and S2, my last HTC device was an HTC Desire - so I'm not sure what the previous generation of HTC devices supported.
I guess it supports U3, because A9 does.
Good to hear, looks like I'll be upgrading my MicroSD card then, thanks!
Great news. I have a U3 card but don't get the full benefit of it at the moment. When I searched for this information on precious phones I could never find anything!
I called HTC today to see if they could tell me if the HTC 10 will support UHS-II but after consulting with the build team they still did not understand what I was asking about so hopefully the full specs on the bus type for the memory card reader will be released soon. If anyone knows if HTC 10 supports UHS-II please comment as I am considering buying the new sandisk card or the samsung pro + U3 card depending on what the bus type is.

If you're getting Samsung Pro+ U3, you don't need UHS-II. Its specs are:
UHS-I / U3 / Class 10
Max. Read Speed: 95 MB/s
Max. Write Speed: 90 MB/s
It's a fast card. I got several 64 GBs when it was on sale for $28. The 128 GB version is available but almost double the price of slower 128GB cards, but still not a bad deal IMO.

Thank you for the response. I was going to get a UHS-II CARD if the HTC 10 used that bus. If they stick with the UHS-I then I was going to go with the samsung pro plus. Glad to here you like your card, I have read nothing but positive remarks on the samsung cards.
So which card (in terms of speed) to get for optimal user experience?
So I was anxiously waiting for HTC's reply about the UHS-I vs UHS-II.
Randomly looked at the SD820 specs five minutes ago. I'm feeling so dumb right now.

UFS 2.0
eMMC 5.1

Well there's our answer.
And since the A9 supported UHS-I U3, the 10 will also support UHS-I U3.
It will NOT "fully" support UHS-II U3 cards, they will work (backwards compatibility) but you will not get the full speed benefit of them!
Maybe we'll get SD 4.0 (UHS-II) with Snapdragon 830 or whatever it will be called..

I'm going to assume you mean with Adoptable Storage "enabled".
Well, of course an UHS-I U3 card. Sure you can buy and use an UHS-II U3 card but there is no real benefit to that because the 10 fully supports only UHS-I U3. Also UHS-II U3 cards are really expensive..
For user experience, buy the microSD card with the fastest random 4K read and write speed possible.
Why "random 4K"? Because what we do on our devices is inherently random. Opening an app, updating an app, skipping music files and such. Only things that we do on our devices which are sequential in nature would be recording a video, taking a photo, downloading a large file and so on. (or transferring big files PC<>phone)
Sequential read/write speeds with SD cards (or SSD or HDD) are what's advertised most of the time and those speeds are already waaay more than enough so no need to focus on those aspects!
For example phones record 4K video usually at about 40-65Mbit/s which is 5-8.1MB/s. And that's sequential, not random.
That's about the heaviest sequential write operation we do on our phones. Downloading a large OS update could be "heavier" if you have really fast internet speed.
For random 4K read, I consider 10MB/s or above as really good. 8-9MB/s or below, I personally wouldn't bother.
For random 4K write, at least 1MB/s. 2MB/s is nice and above is excellent. (biggest impact=App install/update, OS update etc)
For speed reference and a reason for the above speed recommendations:
Anandtech's internal NAND random 4K speed tests from Galaxy S7 review part 1.

You can for example google "make model crystaldiskmark" and see the results.
If you don't find CrystalDiskMark results for some specific microSD card
a) don't bother because it's some random card
b) rummage through Newegg or Amazon etc buyer reviews. Occasionally some kind soul will benchmark his/her recent purchase and include the numbers in his/her review.
For example the Sandisk Extreme microSDXC 64GB is really nice

Kingston UHS-I U3 microSDXC 64GB also looks nice at the first glance but look at the random 4K write speed, that's horrendous! (don't even touch it with a ten foot pole)
Lexar 1800x microSDXC 64GB is one of the best I've ever seen. But it's so expensive (100€'s) ;(
Disclaimer: when you are looking at CrystalDiskMark results for 4K speed, do not look at the QD32 or Q32Tx numbers.
Only look at the 4K speed numbers that don't have the QD32 or Q32Tx text next to them, that's the number we are interested in.
QD stands for Queue Depth. Long story short: Queue Depth means how many read and/or write (I/O) operations are queue'd one after the other.
QD32 is a REALLY high and ridiculous number. You do not see that kind of queue depth with I/O operations on a phone, not on a PC, and heck, most of the time not even in servers either.
The speed number which does not have QD32 or Q32Tx text next to it means that the Queue Depth is 1. Only 1 read or write operation is queue'd. That's the normal kind of QD you see in phones or PC's.
so i ordered the 128gb Sandisk Ultra card... i know it is slightly slower than the Extreme range but I wanted more than 64gb to store all my music etc... will I actually notice any issues running this card rather than one of the faster ones?

For music listening I would say no. The difference will be when you want to save large files to and from the card. This is when the differences in speed per second add up over minutes when you are talking about gigabytes of data transfered.
In reality, this shouldn't be a big issue unless you are constantly moving big files. I guess the most relatable for me would be twrp backup to SD card. For a file of that size I would only imagine an extra 30 seconds to 1 minute so its still fine.

great thanks for the info. I thought so but best checking. I occasionally download or copy over the odd movie file over wifi from my NAS but happy with the current read/write speeds i get on my m7 internal storage so im sure the htc10 and ultra card combo will be an improvement anyway!

You will bottleneck in that scenario... But I would imagine it would be the WiFi causing the slow down rather than the card.
It will be most notable when downloading and uploading via a cable. Or saving to the card from the phone (like twrp which is generating data for the card rather than getting it from the USB cable or online).
I don't think you will have anything to worry about here buddy.
I wouldn't think it comes with a UHS-II bus since no phone in existence does.

If all you're doing is storing music and pictures on it, you won't see a problem. If you decide to use a slower card as expanded storage though, it's going to be a bottleneck for your applications.
I'm going to be doing some research into the fastest card the phone will support, methinks!

I am still not sure if it's worth to use it as an expanded storage. I ordered a Samsung extreme pro but I'm undecided about using it externally or not... Anyone has input on this? Any other phones that allow this?

I think this should be possible on any device that has received marshmallow, I used temporally on my oneplus x with cyanogenmod 13, worked fine but I can't speak about performance, I'm not a smartphone gamer and I don't record in 4k

im going from 32gb total storage in my M7 for apps, games, music, photos, videos etc. to 32gb internal for apps + games and 128gb for everything else.... think il be fine!
and i wont use adoptable storage as il want to occasionally plug microsd into PC to transfer files etc.

Looks like the Sandisk Extreme Pro is the best suit for adoptable storage use:

Or is this overkill?

That should be the best one, you want u3. So SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS I - U3 Should be in the 40-50 dollar range for a 64gb. They don't make them any bigger.
