Does Qi charger work if there's a case on the phone? - Nexus 5 Accessories

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this but I've been trying to find out if I have a case, will Qi charger still work? I bought a Spigen Slim Armor case and would like to buy a Qi charger as well.

Should be fine. I have a case on my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 and it works on the wireless charger just fine.

I want to mount a wireless charger inside my bedside table so I don't have to see it. I hope I can do that plus have a case on it. Here is what I'm talking about.

That's pretty cool but you would be limited to having your phone on that one spot forever.

I just tried my Nexus 5 on a LG WCP-300 wireless QI charger and it seems to work up to 10 or 12mm of paper.
Not sure what the different cases are made of but I had a Ringke slim case for the past year on my old Nexus 4 with no problems at all. (again tried it with 10mm of paper for a test and it works fine).
Distance away from the charger might affect how fast it can charge, and different chargers might perform differently, YMMV.

nevermind on my post

I just got Spigen Slim Case [Ultra Fit] and (Upgraded) RAVPower Qi-Enabled Wireless Charger and my N5 has no problems charging through the case (actually I can hold the phone almost 1/2 inch above the charging pad and it still chargers).

Does the wireless charging door fit in the otterbox?

Yes, it does fit. That being said it is a very tight fit, one poster here removed the foam from the back of the Otterbox case, I did not and the case still fit.
I have also purchased the PT defender case from Bestbuy and it fits as well, again a very tight fit.
I was really worried about it charging through the cases, but it does without any issues.
Awesome! Thanks for your response!

There any other good cases that will fit with the wireless charging door?
I have the case/holster combo from Verizon and the wireless charger and battery cover. The case I have does not work with the wireless charger back. It sucks I have to change the back cover everytime I want to charge the phone.

Doubt it. Wouldn't a case on that door affect how well it works?

The wireless charging door seems like a extended battery size? Is their a different case that bestbuy sells besides the PT Platinum? I can't find the defender you are referring too

The charging door is bigger than the stock door, but is still smaller than the extended battery door.
Here is the SKU 2299396 for the platinum Best Buy case.
I had to do my first battery pull since using the BB case and I don't recommend using this case with the wireless battery door. Like I said it was a tight fit putting the case on, out was almost impossible taking the case off!.
The Otterbox Defender is a tight fit, but can be removed fairly easily.
The Best Buy Platinum case is much to difficult to remove to recommend it for use with the wireless charging door.
So the Otterbox's plastic and rubber doesn't affect the wireless charging at all? Any idea what the range on the wireless charger is? Also, what wireless charging system are you using?

When using the Otterbox case I had no issues when charging. I didn't remove the foam, but like I said previously it was a very tight fit.
I have no idea on range of the charger, and i'm using the LG Verizon pad.
my black silicon verizon case fit fine over the wireless charging door, it created some gaps and such around the kickstand, but it worked and charged fine

So are the wireless battery doors and mats interchangeable or do you have to be sure you use the correct brand mat for your door? Just wondering because if the doors/backs are mat specific then I probably won't do it as you won't be able to use the LG Verizon pad with anything other than a phone.

Don't think it's specific to the LG Verizon charger, I just purchased it as I got the wireless battery door free (Aug. Verizon promotion)
Pretty sure that I read here (XDA Forums) that the powermat would work as well, I would search the forums before going and buying the powermat charger.

Powermat won't work as it uses a different charging technology. You can use the energizer QI charging matt though, that will work.

Add to the list:
RAVPower Qi Charger (Works Pretty good, Sometimes I have to unplug and replug the charger) <$40
RAVPOWER AMAZON LINK
MOCREO(TM) 10000mAh High Capacity Portable Power Bank Qi-Enabled Single-Position Wireless Charger Charging Pad TX-5600 (DoCooler, Choe, and Skyrocket are all the same as this one) (Works really good and it's completely wireless!!!! << About $50-$70 too!
SOLD OUT BUT LOOK UP THE OTHER ONES I NAMED
Just about any case will work with the current wireless chargers so this thread is pretty redundant to the other wireless charging threads.
However, I might as well contribute.
LG WCP-700 (Works well with the Neo Hybrid case)

AWESOME. I just ordered a wireless charger yesterday and I have that case, good to know
btw the gold is an awesome color
Anyone tried if:
1. The official nexus Charger works with the neo hybrid
2. Are the magnets strong enough to be used as a car mount with the case?
Unfortunately the Spigen Neo Hybrid doesn't works with the Nokia DT910, it makes the Nexus 5 being a little more up on the stand, and the recoil for the wireless isn't aligned anymore and don't want to charge ... Now I have a case to sell if anyone is interested (Neo Hybrid Champagne Gold)...

I have the Neo Hybrid and the DT910 - works fine. Occasionally it won't start charging if I set it on the stand mis-aligned, but if I'm a little careful it works...use it for every overnight charge as a night clock, too. My DT-900 plate on my desk also works perfectly with the Neo Hybrid case.

I wouldn't rely on the magnets for this in the car if I was using a case. I wouldn't have any problem relying on the magnets when the phone is not in a case (I don't use one myself) as the official nexus magnets are very stable, provided you practice with it to get really used to getting it in the sweet spot...it's kinda funny, for me it feels almost like it notches into place if I give it just the right amount of force on the phone) but through the thickness of the case, I'm sure it would be very prone to falling off.
Not to mention when you hit a bump in the road. Come to think of it, maybe even without a case it would be capable of popping off. Don't know, I don't drive.
( I do use the official charger at home, mounted in the similar way as what you would have in a car though, it's attached to the side of my dresser which is next to my bed so I can just turn over and look at it if needed, and so it works well with voice commands if I'm taking a nap or whatever. )
I've been using the Nokia DT-900 and the Spigen Neo Hybrid Case with no problems

Can you explain, please: did you use official Samsung wireless back cover & Spigen cover + wireless charger?
Or some Qi receiver and standart back cover?
I just bought samsung wireless back and it's work fine, but I afraid that spigen cover didn't fit.
If you use standart back cover and Qi receiver, did it fit well in spigen case in result?
Thank you!

Car dock with wireless charger

Has anyone seen and\or used car dock with built-in QI charger?

Check out this IndieGoGo project for a wireless (QI) car charger, Air Dock. Sounds like that's what you are looking for. Funding ends in 29 days...
I used an old Samsung qi pad, a cheap universal mount, and a standard micro usb charging cable and made my own.

I found out the hard way that this will NOT work with our devices, for some reason. The new Nexus wireless charger seems to only work with Nexus devices. My Nexus 7 works fine with it, but my Maxx doesn't respond to it at all.
I use the LG Smart Fit 2, it works awesome waiting for iBolt to release theirs to try it out.

I pledged a couple days ago. Hopefully it works with the Maxx. I'm a little concerned that it might not be a free-positioning Qi charger. My Maxx is pretty fussy about how it is placed on cheap Qi chargers.

I don't think that's a free-positioning Qi-charger, so that's largely to be expected. I have a couple TYLT Vu chargers. They work pretty well, although I need to center it on the charging dock within about a centimeter. That's not hard to hit, but that's supposed to be one of the most forgiving Qi chargers in terms of positioning.
I'm an early bird on Air Dock. I'll let you know how it works as soon as I get in February.
It said the Air Dock requires a glossy back to work, not sure how the Maxx's kevlar backing will go, but thats the only thing stopping me from ordering one right now.
There is a Nexus 5 version with magnetic field for better grip. I hope it will work all together.

I'm 99.(9)% sure that it has metal body/tray for components inside. So it should stick to magnets in the dock.

I have the Mountek nGroove Snap car mount that was used in the DIY charger linked in this thread. The mount comes with metal plates to attach to your phone so that they can be attached to the mount magnetically. The Droid Maxx attaches to the mount without the need of the plates. So yes, either a metal frame or its own set of internal magnets.
Interesting...I might spring for the Air Dock then.
Although it looks like it exploded in popularity and now the price is $63 and delivery a month later.
Good news, Air Dock has raised 60000!
http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-air-dock
I can't wait when I get my early bird. I'll share my experience here once I get it.
yeah I do agree Air Dock is a faboulous item, but according to their timetable the first shipping will be on April...
Anyway do you guys think Air Dock will stick to TPU Gel skin cover?
The 'S' shaped one
I`m not quite sure about it..
I'm an early bird and I should get mine in February.
I think it should work with you case just fine. From my point of view it should grip even better comparing to Kevlar.

Spigen Slim Armor Case with QI Charging?

Has anyone tried QI charging through the Spigen Slim Armor case? I got an aftermarket back cover with the Qi sticker on my VZW G3 but I'm concerned that the case's non TPU back will interfere with wireless charging. According to the QI spec it should be okay but who knows.
Anyone have success setting up wireless charging through the Spigen Slim Armor case? If so, what charger did you use?
I read a post that someone said it's working but on slow charge. I'm waiting for my charger to show up then I can confirm.
Just received my charger. It does indeed charge but I did get the "Charging Slowly" message. Doesn't seem much slower than plugging it in though. Just a matter of minutes and it's already gone up two percentage points. So I feel an overnight charge will be plenty to charge a dead battery, which was my main concern.
I bought this charger...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Qi-Wireless...l_Phone_PDA_Chargers&var=&hash=item486b124eff
I'm wondering if brand of charger will make a difference in output or signal strength to the phone. I have it plugged into a 5-port Anker 40W USB charger hub.
Going to test to see if it charges with the screen on as well.
So even though I got the slow charging message it looks like it's charging about 10% every 20 minutes or so.
Seems good to me! That's with my Spigen Slim Armor case installed and screen off.
Tried it with the SLIM ARMOR and the original Charger WCD-100 from LG
Not working at all.
I think the case is much to thick to connect.
Try a different charger. Mine works great.

I order today itian a6. When i try i will tell here how it is. I use slimpack case.
I posted this yesterday in the VZW Accessories thread, but figured it may help some folks here as well.
Figured I'd post my Qi setup in my car for anyone else looking for a similar solution.
I'm using these products:
iOttie Qi Car Mount: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
OEM Qi compatible back cover: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Spigen Slim Armor Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16875934268
Wireless charging works perfectly in the car, and that is with the Slim Armor case on. The mount is well made and has a great design. It's a bit pricey (though currently on sale for under $40) but I'm very satisfied given the quality and functionality. I was a bit wary buying the back cover from a generic merchant in China, but it shipped relatively quickly (about 2 weeks) and works perfectly, NFC included. Hope this helps someone.

Can you wirelessly charge with a case on?

Is it possible to put a case on the Pixel 3 XL and still use wireless charging? Will only certain cases work? None?
Thanks.
Probably depends on the case. Even on the Google website it shows one charging on the stand with a case (fabric on). Looking at Spigen's site some of them say clearly they support wireless charging while it's omitted for others...

Depends on the case. The ones that can will say so. For example some of the Spigens can and it says so. Others say nothing about it and they can't.
Yes you definitely can as long as there isn't anything blocking the connection through the case like a magnet. Even externally using a pop sockets you can't wireless charger. So the answer is yes it'll work through mostly anything and any case unless there is an object in between
During the Google presentation they said you can charge even with a case
Good to know. Thanks for the replies.
I have never had an issue wirelessly charging with a case on. With any phone and even using an external wireless charger adapter
Charging and charging well are two different things. As an example my Note 8 took forever to charge with the leather case on and had to be set on the charger just exactly right to charge at all. Case off and you could just toss it on the pad and it worked. Thick leather has been the worst in my experience, TPU seems to have little effect if any over charging sans case. In the latter case those were all lightweight close fitting cases, might be different with the thicker full protection style cases like a defender. Haven't tried any other materials with wireless charging.
I went with the "all around" protection and go the Otterbox Defender case... it unfortunately doesn't work well with the Pixel Stand.. even with the rubber outter shell off it doesn't charge consistantly. It will charge, then stop... I'm getting a Spigen Neo Hybrid which..is supposed to work with Wireless charging.

Most chargers require the case to be <=4mm to charge wirelessly.
