[Q] T-Mobile user agent based tether upsell evasion no longer working - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Hello! I searched literally 6 hours over google last night when my tether conked out and came up with no solutions. Here's a description of the problem:
Tethering to a computer was working fine last night, I use user agent switcher on chrome to get around the tether upsell (insert rant about I pay for my data, I use it how I like) as I usually do, when a page I was loading broke halfway in. I refreshed it and suddenly got redirected to the upsell page. All of my internet based applications began to show connection failures as well, steam, dropbox, skype, and thunderbird all fail to connect (I assume because t-mo is redirecting them to the upsell page as well.)
I've taken these steps to try solving the problem:
Changing my user agent to something else in chrome. No dice.
Clearing cache/restarting computer/changing the device name/MAC address spoofing. No dice.
Rooting my phone following the instructions at tech(dot)gamotech(dot)com/how-to-root-galaxy-note-3-lte-n9005-running-on-android-4-3-jb/ and using apps like WiFi Tether Router, WiFi Tether for Root Users, and a few other apps. None of the programs work, they all give an error of some kind and fail to broadcast a wifi signal despite being granted full SuperSU access.
Abusing T-Mobile tech support. Great stress relief, but they're dumb as rocks.
Does anyone have any other workarounds, advice, or information?

Hot spot shield is both pc and android based and is an open proxy that encrypts data packages as i use the android one and it always works a bit slower, and torrents won't download with it but basic Web browser and streaming games and movies work fine

Doesn't jugs already have tethering option ? Why would you need a third party app to tether?
Does it wirlesslesly with no tmob charge?

Pretty excited about the promotion that starts ont he 25. Reminds me of free wifi calling and how they told no one but if you specifically asked for it that put it on your account.

good luck finding a rep who will add it just like free wifi calling
Back to the original post and the question asked.
I'm running Juggernaut as well. Is there a way to get free wifi tethering? Furthermore, data speeds are terrible through tether, but decent on the phone. That is, I can download a 385mb file from Dropbox in about 10 minutes or less (I didn't waste my data by testing the download of the whole file). However, tethered to my laptop, I cannot even get the main Google web page to load reliably, much less download a file.
Another example. Netflix plays fine on the phone, impossible with a tethered laptop.
Any suggestions? Yes, I've done my searching. I've seen others complaining of the same problem, but no clear solutions. Only possible solution is to use TB to uninstall and re-install Tether Manager (a solution posted for Zombie, BTW, not Juggernaut). However, under Juggernaut I don't see Tether Manager listed under TB in order to uninstall and re-install.
Hope this makes sense. Any help is appreciated.

Okay, I kept looking and found a solution that appears to be working. I downloaded Open Garden Wifi Tether. That fixed the connection and bandwidth problems. Streaming HD Netflix on tethered laptop without a hitch, but I still get these annoying pauses and delays before data transfer starts. After as much as a 1-2 minute delay the video stream begins buffering and the video plays.
I think that is a t-mobile data thing, not a 4g or GS2 problem.
I also noticed that Speedtest routes to a server in D.C. and I'm in Jacksonville, FL. I manually reset to servers here in Jacksonville, but that resulted in abysmal scores.
Ah well, the quest continues. Next thing to sort out is to find someway to make calls without using minutes (Skype? Google Voice?).
Hope this helps someone else. Also, I'm open to any helpful input.

Solved. I think
A tmo Rep told me that it would be free if I was using barnacle. My speeds are great honeslty. You can also go through USB or blutletooth but this seems gayest with barnacle. Barnacle is free also
You can also get no throttle if you replace some things using root explorer but there are whole threads for that

Wifi tethering without root?

Rooting isn't an option because the usb port on the phone is broken. I've tried foxfi and it doesn't work, and I've tried elixir 2 widgets that let me turn on the sprint hotspot. No luck there either. Are there any other options?
Thanks
You will not receive free wifi tether on the Evo without rooting.

In some of the comments they mention an app called FoxFi. I have not tried it, but it seems to work without rooting your phone. Check it out and let us know the results.
Most recent I've heard would be what the previous poster mentioned... Foxfi apparently is a contender however if it matter at all, I understand you want the Wifi but in case you're a curious person you can try Bluetooth thru PdaNet, free on the market
Search clockworkmod tether. ill attach the apk.
If you do not have root and plan to wireless tether; You're out of luck. Many people are so skeptical when it comes to rooting. It usually safe. I always recommend do as much reading as you can so when you root your phone you have a good idea how to do it. As I was saying, you can always use the alternative, which is wire tether such as Easy Tether. In most cases they do not require root but will only work if their software is installed on the computer. If you really want to get creative. If you have an old laptop with WiFi built-in. Download the Easy Tether software on the computer and download the app from the market. Once it is paired and the internet works. Share the internet connection through the computer's WiFi. If you need help, just Google: "How to share wired internet through WiFi". I can guarantee you will 1000s of guides to choose from. Good Luck and hit that thank you button.

sorry I just realized that you root your USB port is broken. That is a common problem with the EVO LOL. I would recommend taking to a Sprint or an alternative repair shop to get that fix. Im sure there are guides that will show you how to fix it yourself with just some tools from RadioShack. Once again, Good Luck.

finally a real solution for the wifi tethering

i dont take credit for this, but i just brought together @gaww @C.Sweat @Crxdc and @Ramone360 work
i know alot have been using the "wifi tethering for root users" and still hitting the 500MB limit and t mobile shutting them down, so after alot of work put by these guys, theres is a solution
theses are the exact words from @Crxdc from another threat http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2360370&page=2
"I rooted my phone then I Installed Wifi tether for root users and Hideman (gives 4 free hours per day of VPN service).
First turn on the Hideman
Second turn on the Wifi tether
third surf the web (do we still say that)
I Verified with the t-mobile data and it all is going toward my unlimited plan instead of the 500mb hotspot they give."
so use any VPN service like he said i use hideman, and hideninja VPN
another solution that @Ramone360 had was this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2361598
and these are his words, "Use chrome browser and download user agent switcher to switch to a browser (I use safari)"
for me android handset and andoird tablet, those seem to work for me!
well thats pretty much it:victory:
The VPN solution has been known for quite a while. Encrypted traffic (all VPNs) will obviously bypass anything sniffing they're doing on traffic, including user agent sniffing.
I used about 2gb of WiFi tethering to play Netflix on my sisters Xbox and T-Mobile didn't cap me or sent me a message, or all went to my regular data

4.3 and VPN Tethering

Has anyone found a way to get tethering to work while you have a VPN active? I tried vyprVPN and ibVPN, and neither of them allow for data to be sent to the phone.
On the Alpha 4.2.2 rom, everything works fine. I cant get it working on any 4.3.
Actually I cant get it to work on any 4.2.2 or 4.3 CM10 rom... Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks!

Go into your APNs and hit your menu button. Press to reset them, and try again. If that doesnt work, you might want to try a stock google CSC and then resetting them again.
I got tethering working on 4.3, but VPN on the phone while using hotspot is a no go.
Does anyone know if it would be better to run the VPN on the client computers rather than the phone anyway? Its a little more of a pain since you have to open a VPN connection on every machine, but..
Hello,
I also worry about this problem.
I am in china and have to use VPN to connect to my mail provider, facebook and so on.
When I tether my notebook by wifi or usb, everything seems fine, but internet ist just not working.
As I read about this problem here and have it with both stock firmware and CM10.1, and also with a Windows 7 and a Linux Notebook, I think it's not my fault.
I think there are 3 ways, where the last is the best:
1) Tethering will always use the internet connection
2) Tethering will use VPN if connected, if not it will use internet
3) You can choose (I guess it should be a setting for the vpn profile "allow tethering").
I guess this can be fixed with one line in iptables? But I guess I can't
David.
I too need this on note 3

[Q] xbmc app using tethering data?!?

I have started using the xbmc android app on my note 2 for a few days, after a few days of use I got a push notification message from tmobile that said to prevent from tethering future mobile hotspot from being block to sign up, but i have not done any tethering at all, and now as of today i just got a message from tmobile again that said my hotspot service was being blocked, now i notice my xbmc app dose not work, why is the xbmc android app using my tethering data how can i make it use my regular mobile data? I am also not rooted and have a stock note 2 if that helps any.
TMO detects "tethering" by detecting user agents and such. There's no real way to know where the traffic comes from. I suspect the XBMC app just uses standard desktop user agents for its HTTP connections, so got caught by it. If you're streaming from a home connection, try connecting an OpenVPN or SSH tunnel first. The encryption should get you past the retarded block.

I Google search and landed on this page. You have the same problem I have for my tmobile note 3. Anyways, I couldn't find any answers to your question yet but I know that either the app 1channel or the icefilm or the dailyflix app causing it. I got the push msg 2nd time saying now my teher has been blocked. I can't get any movies in the 1channel or the icefilm or the dailyflix app to load if I'm on my lte data. But if I turn the wifi on, and go into these apps, it will load just fine. I downloaded the 1channel app from the playstore and that app has 1channel and icefilm in it, it did the same thing. It will not load anything on mobile data but it will load on wifi. So I think its one of those app that causes tmobile to think your tethering. Try different one from Mashup repo. It will work with your data but not the ones that I mentioned.
Edit: I forgot to mention that the 1st push msg text I recieved from tmobile about hostpot tether, those apps still worked fine. As soon as I received the 2nd text about my hotspot tether has been blocked. All those apps stopped loading any videos unless I use wifi.
Did any of you thought to call T-mo customer service?
I am using Sopcast and I received the tethered message, but as soon as I got it, I called them and yelled at them, telling them that I never tether.
That was way back when they first came up with unlimited data.
I don't know what they changed, but never had any problems or any more messages from them and I use A LOT of data watching live TV at least 10 hours a day.
It is worth a try.

I found out what the problem is, it all has to do with the xbmc app for android its using a desktop interface which your android device thinks its using a computer thats how your tethering data is being used, but only the xbmc app is using your tethering data any videos you watch will be using your mobile data, for example when you search for movies or tv shows you'll notice xbmc working evertime xbmc is working and searching for content then its using your tethering data, but once you start streaming, it uses your mobile data, so really its only using a really small amout of tethering data when xbmc is searching or updating its plug ins.
