Crazy lack of performance - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

I went into the Apple store the other day to play with the new iPad mini and tested out a game called raven sword. I remember thinking the graphics were pretty good so I bought the same game for my new note 10.1 when I got home. Immediately I noticed the graphics were no where near as good. Do I restarted the tablet and made sure all other apps were closed. I remember a thread here about asphalt also not allowing high performance for some people on this tablet. Sure enough I tried that game too and the high performance aren't even options. Making sure it wasn't just android in general I installed ravensword on my note 2 phone which has been on for days and has a ton of other apps open including two browsers with a ton of tabs.. the game ran flawlessly and looked the same as it did on the iPad. What the hell is going on here.. someone please let me know what might be throttling my note 10.1 2014 so much. I really like it and nothing can match the pen input but this really isn't okay.

Most likely the games arent optimized. It is a new device so it could take some time
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Hey thanks for the quick response.. I thought the same myself so I waited a couple weeks then I saw this post where someone shows theirs with the high graphics performance options. Now I'm thinking it must be something wrong with mine. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47889956
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk

Yeah thats true. He owns the LTE variant with the snapdragon SoC (p605). I'm running the wifi only model (p600) and I am not able to choose high graphics in asphalt 8. I dont think there is something wrong with our devices. Developers didnt know how good the performance of the new exynos processor woud be... so they just prevented problems by making the graphics worse and the gameplay fluid
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Ahh ok, I see what you're saying. So is it safe to assume the note 3 with the exynos is having the same issues? Crazy considering its been out for months. If this is the case I guess I feel better at least knowing it's not the actual device.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk

I cant guarantee it but i guess things will become better in 1 or 2 month when the device gets more attention or a few custom roms. My S4 wasnt perfect at the start but now it is a beast

We don't have to blame Samsung but the App developers which still live (a) in a Apple world or (b) in the 80ies because they still didn't learn how to write Apps for Android in a proper way.
And because I also buy this game and write a mail to the developers, you maybe also should do it.
And in general this seems still to be normal that we have to wait until some Apps are "fixed" for this device. I have this also with my first Android tablet which was by most Apps recognized as a phone and later with the HTC One X where many games didn't work at the beginning. But I didn't expect that this "problem" still exists.
So, we have to wait and inform in-between the developers when a App didn't work correct.

That may be the better solution so devs can see that there are people who would like to use their apps/games but are not satisfied with the fact that it looks not good on a hig end device

Just bought it to support the development. Definitely a lot of updates have been occurring. I think not before long we'll have a stable version. (fps is like 10 or lower on many games.)
Developer is also very supportive. He answers emails fast.
It looks wonky
They have buttons on top of much of the lower screen which screws with the touch screen
Also the horrible fps
We are not ready for a new emulator yet
Maybe with the next gen of phones but not this one

There's a toggle at the top that hides the bottom of the screen if you need the touchscreen. The phones can handle it, once it's optimized. I'm holding out, the s4 krait is a monster.
But what if you need both buttons and screen
Also there was another Ds emu back in the GS1 days I believe

I don't think there's many games that have that.
There's very active development for another NDS emulator.
http://jeffq.com/blog/nds4droid/
Also the one in the title has been updated a few times too. It's getting much smoother and it'll only take a few more updates to finally be playable.

I am disappointed in nds4droid. Now it's release 11, but speed remains as release 1. The developer just worked on UI, which is great, but the real issue is speed. It appears the guy did even try to improve speed. Without speed improvement, who really cares about UI. I am sure XDA developers know what is critical, and UI should be left for average developers.

Same, but they're both off different emulation cores. One of them will have a breakthrough in which emulation speeds will greatly increase. The free one appears to get more updates but I have hope in Dsoid.
update 1.9.9 is pretty good ..
I cant play pokemon pearl (or even SS and HG) on full speed,
but it actualy goes much faster then nds4droid on my xperia P.(1ghz dual)
The speed is good enough if you have a little bit of patience.
and the battles in both pokemon games are even faster! I guess on 45-50F/s.
I think if the developer spends some time on it he might could get this emulator at "almost" full speed.
Nds4droid is getting a lot more support in. Kind of wish I didn't purchase dsoid.

Will we really need another phone for the next three years?

I was running system monitor this morning while I played real racing 3 and I noticed the cpu usage was extremely low at only 30% of the phone's processing power was being used. I guess it depends on how much gpu power we will need for games in the near future but I'm sure the cpu we have will be good enough for years to come.
While racing this usage remained the same.

Guess that we will have to wait and see how the phone handles the next android version to say for sure. But this is good to know that even higher end games are not coming close to bogging this phone down.

I could see myself with this phone over the next 3 years. the original Galaxy S Captivate I bought was slow from the get go. The Note 2 so far has met/exceeded my expectations in terms of performance. But who knows, only time will tell.
Well, now that we know that the Note 8's stylus works on the capacitive buttons that alone will make me switch to the Note 3 (For sure it'll also support that).
I guess some software improvement would useful. It will take more than that to get me to switch tho. .. I live in Toronto so the glove mode would interest me. But if the improvements on the note 3 are mostly on processing power etc I won't be moved.

I've been thinking the same thing. This device is so powerful that I believe in two years time when I'm due for an upgrade I may pass for another year or so. Samsung really knocked it out of the park with this one.
We will also have dual boot at some point... This phone (Note 2) in my opinion is the Next HTC HD2... Hard to kill for years to come... And the success of the Note 2 is pretty much due to the fact that virtually every carrier has it... Same thing happened to the HD2 years ago...and both are "revolutionary" phones a bit ahead of its time...

No real reason to upgrade from this device for 2 years. At least for me.
This phone/tablet combo is powerful and well running.

The GPU in this device is however extremely weak and outdated, it is tech from the Galaxy S II.
Yeah, the GPU is probably where it's going to lag behind... though that might not really be an issue within three years. A lot of mobile games barely push what these chips can do.
With that said... we'll see. I'd honestly prefer an A15 processor with a beefier GPU, but at the end of the day my Note 2 runs like a champ. So long as it continues to do so I'm not so sure I'd want to upgrade quickly.
Expecting the note3 to follow in the footsteps of Apple and HTC with what appears to be a better external appearance. Otherwise I am jumping ship probably to HTC unless the HTC One turns out to be a flop. I am already tired of my phone creaking every time it gets twisted or pressure is applied almost anywhere. Off of that alone I will be looking for a new one in the next year. The internals I probably would be content with for probably 2 more years till I feel I would need to replace it due to new software.
Picked mine up day one and likely will be the first device I keep more than a year. I usually change phones every 6 months but I'm in no rush to upgrade. Might make it two years might not but this device has been the first to exceed my expectations.
There's always going to be something new we didn't knew we wanted until it was shown. That said, while our phone runs some high end games, those Tegra 4 titles look promising...
Prolly won't need one but I will upgrade anyhow because I am paying for postpaid plan anyhow.
For games maybe not. But for some new features maybe yes.
real driving force to push phone hardware level right now is android system itself. The better the sleeker, the higher the more functionality, noticed right now we have multiwin supported, based on the fact we don't have the same calculation power in par with x86 counterparts so more cores also means more parallel running powers which providing possible to get your phone into a real working machine.
So I think we might really need one if big G really push the way this direction.
I'm not switching until the next Note is a lot slimmer, with bigger battery and edge to edge screen.
I'm definitely holding to my note 2 until my contract expires in 1.7 years. Specs are still great (other than gpu which is only ok), and expected lime pie will breathe some new life when the time comes. But I do admit that if money was no obstacle, I would get note 3 on day 1 not because I need it, but because my geeky side calls for it

[Q] Is your Nexus 7 little bit slow?

Hi, I bought my device recently from local store. I do have some multitouch issues (even single touch) so I'll probably be swapping for new one, hoping for good luck. But before that I have another concern, overall opening apps, switching in between and going to homescreen feels quite.. slow. Especially default youtube app takes almost 2 sec to open.
Is this normal for all devices?
Sounds like you may have a faulty device. I've never noticed my Nexus 7 to be slow in comparison to my Note 8, iPad 3 and other devices. (the iPad 3 IS slow though!) However YouTube does open slower than any other app I tried. Seems like a full second before it opens.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yeah YouTube does take a second or two to open. But other apps are fine for me. If it's slow for other apps you have than that's not normal.

Yeah it's bit slow for other apps too, but what I care about the most is going to home screen and switching between apps, the lag there is pretty annoying and I didnt see it in reviews I checked. Considering the hardware I thought this stuff should be immediate.

If you upload a video of what you are experiencing we could compare speed to our devices. That way you can decide to return it or exchange it. You should not keep it if you find it annoying. The only question is whether you should exchange it for a correctly working tablet or return it because you need a different device altogether. (Though I've tried many tablets and haven't had one that feels faster to me.)
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Mine was definitely a little sluggish too, my points of comparison were a Tab 3 8.0 and an HTC One phone. I was frustrated with the device between that and the multitouch bugs made it unusable in landscape mode. I ultimately rooted it, updated to the Q release, and put CleanROM on it and it's significantly faster and runs like I expected it to stock. Not everyone wants to root, but if you're up for it that should fix your issues I bet.

been away from Android a while, question note 2

Got the opportunity to swap my Iphone 5 for a galaxy Note 2, have owned a note 2 briefly before, but been using iphones for so long I thought id pop into PCworld and have a play on a note 2 again...alas it was terribly laggy, love the screen, a bit lower res than some of the new beasts out there, but still looks fine, quite fancy doing the trade, only the lag on the tester device was awful, could there have been something wrong with it, im not compare Ios with android, so lets not start that game, just would like to know if the device suffers like some of the older android devices
No man note 2 is ligtning fast its not old device lol.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Shouldn't be laggy at all. Do a factory reset and see if that helps. I am over 90% sure that t will.
the Note 2 is lightning fast in my experience IF the software is up-to-date (the original firmware was a bit laggy for me but that lag disappeared with 4.1.2.
Could also be a device on display with people playing around and no reboot in weeks of course....
Depends on when you experience lag. In general, there shouldn't be any. There is however a slight input lag, and some of the touchwiz apps aren't well optimised at all, ie s note.
Actions like opening the dialer, gallery or contacts might not be instant (about the only thing that was actually better with gingerbread...), these also depend on the size of your database, meaning amount of contacts and pictures for instance.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
No lag on mine either, just got it back from Samsung after a screen repair.
Of course, if you go back to your iphone and update to iOS 7 it'll feel a lot more android-y than ever before. My wife has an iPhone 5, I have a Note 2. I can't even read her screen it's so tiny but my phone is certainly not slow or laggy compared to hers.

That it lags is not surprising, it's amazing that it runs at all.
OP - store demo units tend to get interfered with by all the potential customers who start all the programs and then walk off. You cannot judge a unit based on an in-store one.
Agreed and lije the op asked.

Is the tab pro right for me?

I've been in the market for a new tablet, as my old one (tegra 2 iconia a500) is struggling to hold more than a couple hours' charge. I'm on the fence between the galaxy tabs S and Pro (8.4'')
I'll explain my usage, and what I'm hoping are not-too-high expectations. I am a gamer, first and foremost. (More on that in a bit) I haven't been on twitter for ~2 years or Facebook for almost one. I use hangouts all the time, and spend a lot of my time away from a charger. I had an s5 for awhile which made moving my PSP library from discs to data very fun. That sort of fun got me something like 6 hours of screen on time, playing PSP on 80% brightness. I hope to get AT LEAST that on my tab, without any lag of course (I do NOT use frameskip.) I already know real racing 3, shadowgun, dead trigger 2, and n.o.v.a. 3 run JUST FINE. Heck, my dual core phone can run those just as well as the s5, so I'm not even considering that those games will give either tablet a hard time.
What I'm seeing are tradeoffs back and forth across the board. I'll try to avoid mentioning what everyone knows they have in common.
Tab S- heart stopping screen, better battery life, great speaker placement, BUT... A "select few" get far too hot, and those few have warped back panels. That one makes me cringe. I had one of the "select few" s5's whose camera completely ****** itself. Unfixable. Samsung blames me.
Tab Pro- more stable development, practically same SOC as s5 (800 vs 801, I did some research) so plenty fast compared to the tab S. But worse battery life, I'm told the screen is dull, samsung seems to have dropped this like a hot potato so future support is grim (not that it matters much if you have CM) and bad speaker placement
I got to hold a tab s 8.4 and the screen blew me away. Until I found out about the exynos 5420, I thought I'd just held the replacement to my phone AND tablet. I've never seen a tab pro, but that's the direction I'm leaning in right now. I would have ended this essay at "I'm a gamer, and real racing 3 is child's play" but I think that others like me can benefit from the points I've made and what I ultimately choose.
I apologize for even having to ask you guys this question. I don't make much so it takes a long time to save for something like this. I just want to make sure I make the right choice. Please, feel free to say why/why not for the tab pro 8.4
Thanks in advance, xda.
Final note: I guess the shield is a contender also, but a "warm, faded screen", bad camera, and 4-ish hour screen time is a turnoff.
Sent from my XT830C using XDA Free mobile app
I am an Tab S owner and I own the 10.5 one. What I can tell you is that yeah it does get hot right around the camera during gaming. As far as development, the Tab S 8.4 WiFi version is getting official cm12 from what I heard. The unofficial works fine on it too with little problems. As for the warp issue, that was only affect ed on the ones made before launch. The issue has been fixed I guess since there hasn't been any reports of it since last year. Um if you keep the brightness at 50% and you play games, you'd probably get 4-5 screen on time since you said you play games. I'd suggest you look at the battery results in the tab s threads. The screen is amazing but may kill a lot of battery in your case. As for the tab pro, other users will need to report on that since I don't own it. The tab s is gonna definitely gonna have lag out of the box unless you install a custom ROM then it won't. If you have any questions about the tab s ask me. Since I own the bigger model, the 8.4 has a similar experience in lag and all that
Hey, I read alot of stuff in the forums from you, and you're pretty well-informed, I'm glad you found this! If you (or anyone) could rip a copy of it, and run it on ppsspp with 2x PSP resolution and no frameskip, I'll be able to purchase a tab s mostly without worry. Also, as a personal favor, could you see if a conductive metal key or something gets the touchscreen to react in gloves/high sensitivity mode? Yeah. I've actually been playing for the past 3 hours! Getting addicted xD Here's a gameplay I recorded. Fps is shown as well. There only seems to be a slight micro lag in loading screens. Other than that its all smooth. There was audio cuts in the video as I was recording. But without recording its all smooth. I also shown the ram usage and switching in between apps. Even though I own the 10.5 inch model, it should still be the same on the 8.4 since the chipsets are the same. You should check out some gaming on the Tab pro BTW. Tab S gameplay https://youtu.be/ZA0zTRWRoIM
I think that sells it for me. And while you were recording? Those a15's can really deliver! When I looked up gaming on the pro, all I ever get is the usual. Dead trigger, rr3, etc.
If you're into rpg's, ppsspp can deliver more than Google play ever could. Jeanne d'arc is a fire emblem-esque game with a great story. FF crisis core is fun too. And persona 3 portable. Ah, I can hardly wait now!

Yes I was recording internally. You may need to turn on a few speedhacks to make it smooth but it works fine. Going into another app then switching back works well too since it has 3gb of ram. Of course I couldn't test any other game since it would take forever to download. So its up to you to decide! I didn't get heat because I was running cm11. I'm not sure if the tab pro is better than the tab s so yeah
I've really got a lot to think about. I'll deliberate carefully until the day comes to finally decide. I don't get new devices often so I've got to make it count

Hey! I figured out there is a tab s 8.4 with snapdragon 800, LTE, voice and SMS! Could somebody point me to a model number that gets at least hspa+ speeds on att?

There's no development for those... And att tab s models have locked bootloaders unless you get an international one. I couldn't find a snapdragon model either. I forgot to mention that the build quality is OK on the tab s but the tab pro has a better build quality.
Well, I thought I should let everyone know, I've decided. A week from today, I'll own a shield tablet. O decided to pull the trigger on one, and I'll come back and tell you all how I like it. Thanks for all your help
