Is the tab pro right for me? - Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, 10.1, 8.4 Q&A, Help & Trouble

I've been in the market for a new tablet, as my old one (tegra 2 iconia a500) is struggling to hold more than a couple hours' charge. I'm on the fence between the galaxy tabs S and Pro (8.4'')
I'll explain my usage, and what I'm hoping are not-too-high expectations. I am a gamer, first and foremost. (More on that in a bit) I haven't been on twitter for ~2 years or Facebook for almost one. I use hangouts all the time, and spend a lot of my time away from a charger. I had an s5 for awhile which made moving my PSP library from discs to data very fun. That sort of fun got me something like 6 hours of screen on time, playing PSP on 80% brightness. I hope to get AT LEAST that on my tab, without any lag of course (I do NOT use frameskip.) I already know real racing 3, shadowgun, dead trigger 2, and n.o.v.a. 3 run JUST FINE. Heck, my dual core phone can run those just as well as the s5, so I'm not even considering that those games will give either tablet a hard time.
What I'm seeing are tradeoffs back and forth across the board. I'll try to avoid mentioning what everyone knows they have in common.
Tab S- heart stopping screen, better battery life, great speaker placement, BUT... A "select few" get far too hot, and those few have warped back panels. That one makes me cringe. I had one of the "select few" s5's whose camera completely ****** itself. Unfixable. Samsung blames me.
Tab Pro- more stable development, practically same SOC as s5 (800 vs 801, I did some research) so plenty fast compared to the tab S. But worse battery life, I'm told the screen is dull, samsung seems to have dropped this like a hot potato so future support is grim (not that it matters much if you have CM) and bad speaker placement
I got to hold a tab s 8.4 and the screen blew me away. Until I found out about the exynos 5420, I thought I'd just held the replacement to my phone AND tablet. I've never seen a tab pro, but that's the direction I'm leaning in right now. I would have ended this essay at "I'm a gamer, and real racing 3 is child's play" but I think that others like me can benefit from the points I've made and what I ultimately choose.
I apologize for even having to ask you guys this question. I don't make much so it takes a long time to save for something like this. I just want to make sure I make the right choice. Please, feel free to say why/why not for the tab pro 8.4
Thanks in advance, xda.
Final note: I guess the shield is a contender also, but a "warm, faded screen", bad camera, and 4-ish hour screen time is a turnoff.

I am an Tab S owner and I own the 10.5 one. What I can tell you is that yeah it does get hot right around the camera during gaming. As far as development, the Tab S 8.4 WiFi version is getting official cm12 from what I heard. The unofficial works fine on it too with little problems. As for the warp issue, that was only affect ed on the ones made before launch. The issue has been fixed I guess since there hasn't been any reports of it since last year. Um if you keep the brightness at 50% and you play games, you'd probably get 4-5 screen on time since you said you play games. I'd suggest you look at the battery results in the tab s threads. The screen is amazing but may kill a lot of battery in your case. As for the tab pro, other users will need to report on that since I don't own it. The tab s is gonna definitely gonna have lag out of the box unless you install a custom ROM then it won't. If you have any questions about the tab s ask me. Since I own the bigger model, the 8.4 has a similar experience in lag and all that

Hey, I read alot of stuff in the forums from you, and you're pretty well-informed, I'm glad you found this! The peak of what I need from this device that a person might have laying around is metal gear solid peacewalker for psp. If you (or anyone) could rip a copy of it, and run it on ppsspp with 2x PSP resolution and no frameskip, I'll be able to purchase a tab s mostly without worry. Also, as a personal favor, could you see if a conductive metal key or something gets the touchscreen to react in gloves/high sensitivity mode? I used a crochet needle as a DS stylus on my s5, and got attached

Sorry too for double posting, but "touchwiz lag" is no problem to me. I fully plan on debloating

Doing and downloading now. Just give me some time since my internet is slow. I'm running cm11 so yeah. As for a stylus, I don't think it works. Glove mode works well though

Well, the game is weird. I must have gotten a bad iso or something? I might try another game. This is what it looks like for me

Yeah. I've actually been playing for the past 3 hours! Getting addicted xD Here's a gameplay I recorded. Fps is shown as well. There only seems to be a slight micro lag in loading screens. Other than that its all smooth. There was audio cuts in the video as I was recording. But without recording its all smooth. I also shown the ram usage and switching in between apps. Even though I own the 10.5 inch model, it should still be the same on the 8.4 since the chipsets are the same. You should check out some gaming on the Tab pro BTW. Tab S gameplay https://youtu.be/ZA0zTRWRoIM

I think that sells it for me. And while you were recording? Those a15's can really deliver! When I looked up gaming on the pro, all I ever get is the usual. Dead trigger, rr3, etc.
If you're into rpg's, ppsspp can deliver more than Google play ever could. Jeanne d'arc is a fire emblem-esque game with a great story. FF crisis core is fun too. And persona 3 portable. Ah, I can hardly wait now!

Yes I was recording internally. You may need to turn on a few speedhacks to make it smooth but it works fine. Going into another app then switching back works well too since it has 3gb of ram. Of course I couldn't test any other game since it would take forever to download. So its up to you to decide! I didn't get heat because I was running cm11. I'm not sure if the tab pro is better than the tab s so yeah

I've really got a lot to think about. I'll deliberate carefully until the day comes to finally decide. I don't get new devices often so I've got to make it count

There's no development for those... And att tab s models have locked bootloaders unless you get an international one. I couldn't find a snapdragon model either. I forgot to mention that the build quality is OK on the tab s but the tab pro has a better build quality.

Well, I thought I should let everyone know, I've decided. A week from today, I'll own a shield tablet. O decided to pull the trigger on one, and I'll come back and tell you all how I like it. Thanks for all your help

Just bought it to support the development. Definitely a lot of updates have been occurring. I think not before long we'll have a stable version. (fps is like 10 or lower on many games.)
Developer is also very supportive. He answers emails fast.
It looks wonky
They have buttons on top of much of the lower screen which screws with the touch screen
Also the horrible fps
We are not ready for a new emulator yet
Maybe with the next gen of phones but not this one

There's a toggle at the top that hides the bottom of the screen if you need the touchscreen. The phones can handle it, once it's optimized. I'm holding out, the s4 krait is a monster.
But what if you need both buttons and screen
Also there was another Ds emu back in the GS1 days I believe

I don't think there's many games that have that.
There's very active development for another NDS emulator.
http://jeffq.com/blog/nds4droid/
Also the one in the title has been updated a few times too. It's getting much smoother and it'll only take a few more updates to finally be playable.

I am disappointed in nds4droid. Now it's release 11, but speed remains as release 1. The developer just worked on UI, which is great, but the real issue is speed. It appears the guy did even try to improve speed. Without speed improvement, who really cares about UI. I am sure XDA developers know what is critical, and UI should be left for average developers.

Same, but they're both off different emulation cores. One of them will have a breakthrough in which emulation speeds will greatly increase. The free one appears to get more updates but I have hope in Dsoid.
update 1.9.9 is pretty good ..
I cant play pokemon pearl (or even SS and HG) on full speed,
but it actualy goes much faster then nds4droid on my xperia P.(1ghz dual)
The speed is good enough if you have a little bit of patience.
and the battles in both pokemon games are even faster! I guess on 45-50F/s.
I think if the developer spends some time on it he might could get this emulator at "almost" full speed.
Nds4droid is getting a lot more support in. Kind of wish I didn't purchase dsoid.

The only problem I got is that I can't leave it alone
The screen is very bright and colorful
The battery life is good
The performance is great
it charges in a few hours so you can go back to use it
In terms of experience ruining, game breaking, regret inducing, where-is-my-receipt sorta problems, nothing as of yet. I've only managed to come up with a tiny list of minor annoyances (like the position of the speakers and accidentally hitting the back button while in landscape), but nothing that's pushed me over the edge. In fact, of all the Android tablets I've owned (Xoom, Nook Color, Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, Nexus 7, Transformer TF300T), this is hands down the most useful and practical I've owned.
So how is the battery life? I.e. how long of continuous use before needing to charge?

I really like tee tablet and it is a considerable upgrade to my N7 in every way, even without considering the s-pen functionality.
But since you asked for quibbles, here are two....
In my experience, the IR blaster weak enough that to call it a "blaster"us misleading. More of an "IR crawler".
If you are a really big fan of Hulu (I've met one person), the Hulu app has a framerate stutter at the moment (but the ads are silky smooth).

After nearly a week of use I have no real quibbles. The biggest one is I hate the stock lockscreen but that... that is changed easily enough. So far the device is very responsive and snappy, has less lag with pen input than my note 10.1, and the screen while not the highest resolution by any means looks very, very nice!

How is the gaming performance of Note 8? Can you play all latest games with out any lag with good frame rates?
Also how is the battery life?
The mali400 is the only thing i'm not so happy about. (Oh, and the lack of camera flash).
I was hoping that the note 8 would be a complete upgrade in every area over my HTC Sensation.... But from what I've been able to gather - the Adreno220 in my Sensation is superior to the mali400...
I haven't been able to find any real world evidence of superior performance online though... I guess I'll just have to wait till I actually have a Note 8.0 and do the tests myself.
Would love to hear some feedback regarding the Mali 400.
My feeling is that with current software it's not really an issue. But I fear the note 8.0 / Note 2 will start showing the age of their gpu in the next couple of years.

Every game I've thrown at this thing has done just fine. I'm not sure what a good benchmark game is, but I've not noticed any issues, lag, or performance issues in any title.
In regards to battery life, I've honestly not been paying attention. It's been good enough that I've not had to think about it with extremely heavy use throughout the day.

Oh! That is helpful thank you.
Have you tried putting it up to 800?
Is it me or does the note 8.0 feel warm on the back (bottom left)? I downloaded system tuner and it is reaching 50-55° C ON CPU by simply browsing the internet or just having the screen on. Also, if I put my ear close to where it feels warm I hear this hissing sound (very faint but noticeable). I dont get this same effect on my note 2. Otherwise, I love this tablet!

That very much sounds like your tablet is defective. Hissing is usually a failing componentof some sort. I would take that unit in for an exchange.

Crazy lack of performance

I went into the Apple store the other day to play with the new iPad mini and tested out a game called raven sword. I remember thinking the graphics were pretty good so I bought the same game for my new note 10.1 when I got home. Immediately I noticed the graphics were no where near as good. Do I restarted the tablet and made sure all other apps were closed. I remember a thread here about asphalt also not allowing high performance for some people on this tablet. Sure enough I tried that game too and the high performance aren't even options. Making sure it wasn't just android in general I installed ravensword on my note 2 phone which has been on for days and has a ton of other apps open including two browsers with a ton of tabs.. the game ran flawlessly and looked the same as it did on the iPad. What the hell is going on here.. someone please let me know what might be throttling my note 10.1 2014 so much. I really like it and nothing can match the pen input but this really isn't okay.

Yeah thats true. He owns the LTE variant with the snapdragon SoC (p605). I'm running the wifi only model (p600) and I am not able to choose high graphics in asphalt 8. We don't have to blame Samsung but the App developers which still live (a) in a Apple world or (b) in the 80ies because they still didn't learn how to write Apps for Android in a proper way.
And because I also buy this game and write a mail to the developers, you maybe also should do it.
And in general this seems still to be normal that we have to wait until some Apps are "fixed" for this device. I have this also with my first Android tablet which was by most Apps recognized as a phone and later with the HTC One X where many games didn't work at the beginning. But I didn't expect that this "problem" still exists.
So, we have to wait and inform in-between the developers when a App didn't work correct.

What to buy?

Ok my poor tab pro 8.4 lte t325 got destroyed ( you know dog and kids= dead tablet) Wrong time to have left my tablet on the floor so I guess its really my fault.
Anyways I am in the market for a new tablet. I LOVED the tab pro 8.4 but don't want to buy another one as it is going to be left behind as it was replaced by the tab s. I want another tablet with cell connectivity and don't know if I should by the tab s or wait for a version 2 of it. I was hoping for a tab s with a snapdragon in it but I only get Verizon and at&t where I live. (Well at&t if I have the tablet in one part of my house)
I see that sprint is the only 8.4 with a snapdragon processor where the at&t has the samsung processor.
The snapdragon in my t325 was much more responsive than the samsung processor in the wifi tab s when i tested both side by side.
I had a at&t sim in my tab pro. Will say the Sprint version run on at&t? Does it have the antenna for it?
Now if a version 2 of the tab s is going to be out soon should I wait to see what its going to offer?
I am using my sons tab 3 10.1 for my tablet purposes (its painfully slow and doesn't connect to my samsung dongle for my tv) my daughter won't let me use her note 8
Any insite or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Matt

I don't know why people keep going on about the Exynos versions of the device compared to the snapdragon. I have the Lte Exynos version and it performs admirably. No perceivable lag, nothing that I wouldn't expect on any device.
I have an HTC M8 with Snapdragon 801, which in my mind is well overspec'd anyway, and it performs well against it it in my tests and isn't far behind it.
In any of the benchmark tests I've done (yes I know benchmarks aren't the be all and end all ) the cpu still ranks high up with the best cpu's.
The other thing is that the Snapdragon version has virtually no 3rd party support, no roms, no root, etc. Whereas the Exynos tab has plenty.
Hi. The tab s is more fragile than the tab pro. Um not sure about the sim part as i never owned an lte device. Just a heads up
What's more fragile about it?
Normally my tablets are very well taken care of. My last one was more of a freak accident. Just really bad timing and judgment on my part.

Its more expensive to replace then an regular tablet. For example one hard drop can cause the screen to break completely. Its because we have an amoled screen which could break easy. But this tablet is great for watching videos in my opinion. Up to you. If you are careful then the tab s should do it for you. Its a big step up from the tab pro. Once you see the screen its just amazing! Ive had mine since july and no problems so far. If you want a better screen and performance then the tab s is a step up from the pro. Keep in mind its really thin also. Hope this helps

I agree, what's fragile, what do you intend to do with it, strap it to the bottom of your shoes? Look after it properly and use it as you should and there will be no problem. No device is meant to be dropped, same as don't crash your car and it won't get smashed up.
Honestly the crap people float about.
If you wanna secure your investment then get a otterbox case paired with a tempered glass screen protector which is what I have and I'm just paranoid that way and still careful then you'll be fine.

I ended up getting the tab s t707 on Verizon. I ordered a glass type screen protector and a book style cover for it. Still need to go to the Verizon store and get it activated. So far I'm loving it.
Only down side is one of my hobbies is photography and the pics from my camera look completely different than what's printed. The look exactly like what they print out like on my daughter's note 8 though. So my raw photo editor on this tablet does me no good.

Buy Nexus 7
I guess it is better to buy Nexus 7. This tabs coming with features Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 12 core GPU, 7-inch 1280 x 800 screen, 16GB or 32GB.
Get a Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and a really nice case

Tab s2 9.7' or Tab s 10.5'

Hello everyone,
I decided on buying my very first tablet... After buying my first Samsung Galaxy phone, I have come to absolutely love Amoled displays.
So I have only 2 choices I guess?
So what do you guys think? I've done loads of research and I just can't decided because:
Tab s is Cheaper, better battery, bigger screen But slower SOC.
Tab S2 is faster and i like the portrait orientation with that 4:3 ratio (these are the only advantages imho since i genuinely don't care about the looks, the camera nor the thinness of it because the tablet is going to be in it's case all the time).
So I cant decide if I should go for the old and save a few bucks (euros actually ) or go for the new one that is like 20% faster.
I forgot to mention that I will mainly be using it for ebooks and reading, and maybe a few movies now and then.
Oh and lastly I will be installing cyanogenmod immediately since I never liked bloatware.
Soo... Do share your thoughts with me guys,
Thanks in advance.

I recommend the Tab S 10.5 based on your statement.
Here's a video comparing both:
Really helpful video.
Thanks mate.
Is the performance of that exynos 5420 decent for viewing large PDF's?
Cause from my research many people tend to complain about the tab S' performance.
Or is that associated with the touchwiz

I have been using the Tab S 10.5 for a while now, and it is terribly slow. The reasons for the slowness are very little RAM which cripples the OS (3GB) and general Android application awkwardness and slugginess (designed for phones not for every day use). Both Galaxy tabs have 3GB RAM so you're out of luck.
Using the tablet to do simple, every day tasks, there is a tremendous difference with the laptop. I know you said you only want to watch movies or read books, but still I think a small laptop running Windows or Apple iOS would beat the pants out of any tablet. The only difference is the price, tablets can be much cheaper than laptops. But I regret having bought the tablet because it cannot really do simple things without extreme awkwardness.
The only major plus is I am using it also as a phone (I have the T805) which is something no laptop can do (that I am aware of).
As you said I also have the tablet in a case/ book cover , complete with keyboard and mouse, so it is like a small laptop anyway.
If you have not bought it yet, try to see if there are 10"-11" laptops that could do everything you need and so much better.
Although I don't have the tab s, yet, I'll have to disagree with you friend.
3gb of RAM should be more than enough.
My galaxy s4 has 2 gb and I'm multitasking like crazy... Never ever felt like I need more RAM. But of course I have cm12.1 on it.
My concern with the tab s is the processor not the RAM.

Wow, 3 GB of RAM is little for you... What simple tasks you want to do, that Galaxy tab s is too slow for you? Mine is really fast, enough to replace laptop. Maybe you are not familiar with Android and don't know how to maintain the device fast.

since you mentioned cyanogenmod.... go with the good old tab s 10.5... tab s 2 got nothing develop yet.... :silly:
You are either an 16:10 or 4:3 person, if you watch more video get the S1 10.5" 16:10 if you browse the internet mostly get the S2 9.7" 4:3 Version, if you don't care, I don't either.

I totally agree the tabs 10.5 fast with stock and even faster when rooted. I own the SM-T807P by Sprint variant. I just wish for a couple of custom Roms .
Guys, thanks for all your help.
I went and got my self a nice bronze t805...
I managed to last about 30 mins with bloatwiz.. So now I'm on PAC man Rom...Who cares about Knox and warranties and what not...
I really recommend this Rom. It completely transformed my tab, and now it's much faster.
Cheers lads
