[Q] What will I miss by not getting the G Pad Google Play Edition - G Pad 8.3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The G Pad isn't available in India just yet.. but it's coming. The Google Play Edition isn't.
Just wanted an idea of what all I'll be missing.
The ones I can think of:
1. Stock Android ( or close to it)
2. Quicker updates (already has 4.4.. and wont be as quick as Nexus, but faster than the non GPE)
3. Better dev support.
the G Pad (non GPE) on the other hand will have the Knock on and the IR blaster which the GPE won't.
Am I missing anything?
Will there be a huge difference in battery life? I usually disable OEM features that I'm not using.. so Q Slide, Slide aside and some animations will be disabled.

GPE has NFC. Edit: the Play Store page originally said that it had NFC, but that has now been removed. Must have been a typo.
I imagine the dev support will be more or less cross-platform given that they're on the same hardware, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

GPE doesn't have NFC. Its absolutely identical hardware. Dev support will be the same because they'll run the same software. We plan on making unified builds.

That's what I thought, but the page in the play store lists NFC as one of the features. Of course, it also doesn't list GPS, so it could just be a typo.
Edit: It was a typo. The page did originally say that it had NFC, but that's been removed now.

Just started #lg-gpad on freenode

Can we say that the only difference is the android stock version (and its quicker upgrade)?
So if someone want to install a custom rom, the GPE and the non-GPE version are absolutly the same?

Buy gpad oem and wait for some time someone will definitely port g pad ge rom to oem gpad

Yes but Bootloader unlock and rooting may differ

So is the GPE going to have the blue line on the display that I've been reading about? If it is the exact same hardware. Or would they get all the kinks out before releasing the GPE.

My non-GPE doesn't have a noticeable blue line (or bad yellow tint, or strong light bleed), so it's not guaranteed that the GPE will have the same issue. Could have been a bad batch of screens.

How good is developer support on LG devices?

Hey everyone I'm thinking of getting the LG Optimus G when it releases but the reason I'm not 100% sure yet due to their lack of updates.
So I was wondering how good is the developer community at rooting, creating ROMs, etc for past LG devices? Does LG give enough documentation to help developers or have developers been doing a pretty decent job in general?
I know this is a vague question, was just hoping someone with past LG experiences could shed some light. Thanks.

Based on how they treated my g2x... I wouldnt buy any phone by them ever again.
And even though they got a nexus line coming out at the end of the month... Im just gonna wait for one of the other 4 before I bite. LG can bite me.
If its like the 4xhd bad, 4xhd had locked boot loader and has never been unlocked
So if you want a device for development this will probably be a no go.

How big was the development community for the 4xhd?
I know there have been a number of "challenging" bootloaders that have been defeated.
In the off chance the Optimus G is a big enough hit, there is a good chance locked bootloaders will be overcome.
This seems like it will be a popular device, so a lot of dev support. If I get one in December I will do some custom romsfor the phone.

4xhd doesn't have one rom, its rooted and has cwm but no kernels or roms. Its sad really hopefully this isn't like it or it'll be a bummer
I'm hoping for some good news on the bootloader and rooting for this phone.
I'm going to wait a while and see what happens before I upgrade. If it's locked up tight, I'll be disappointed, and buy something else.
If CWM and CM10 are "quickly" in the works...
Hmm... The Korean model has been rooted. I'm crossing my fingers.
I already pre ordered mine with sprint. I'm hoping to run aosp asap
I have my fingers crossed as well.
I think the LG Optimus G has the specs and pricing to warrant a big community, although I do have to say that LG could have made more hype about it. With the SGs3 and the HOX, people are extremely interested in it, even though the US versions bring very little new to the table. Developers flocked to the devices and now you've got a humongous community.
Also, I think this is a flagship phone for the US, until the HOX+ and the new nexus devices are released, and even then it'll still be a great contender (to the HOX+ at least, not sure what the new Nexus' will bring). It's got a lot of things going it's way for a large community...
Maybe contact LG Mobile to make it unlockable for the phone to sell more and become developer friendly...

I have feeling that the LG Optimus G will be plagued with a locked bootloader. Part of LG's strategies. "If you want a more dev friendly phone, then buy our new LG Nexus 4!"

I don't think I would consider that very good, the One X+ or the GS3 are much better options to be honest. The Note 2 would be the best, but it also looks like the new nexus is coming as well.
Personally I would go with a one X or GS3 and save some cash.
Cyanogen mod doesn't support htc devices so I wouldn't go there.
*if* the optimus g gets unlocked bootloaders then we may see amazing dev support.

That has happened partially for the Exynos Galaxy S III devices. They have broken source code for the HW acceleration driver, so codeworkx and entropy512 may abandon it.

Petition to LG

We all know now about the up and coming Nexus 5, which LG is again the manufacturer. It will be launch (according to rumor) with the latest Android version 4.4 or was it 5(?) called KitKat.
The G2 is very much here. 4.2 out-of-the-box with all it's niceties.
Now we, GPro user/owner probably wondering what LG's instore for our neglected capable device. We're still on 4.1 and should be on 4.2 by now. And one could even ask if we could still see the light with 4.3, much more with KitKat.
Will a petition be of any help from GPro user to send LG a clear voice demanding support from them? Will they listen thinking that we're just small in number?
The GPro was my first LG (smart)phone and really have no idea how they are with support. Was LG notoriously sucks with updates?
Will a PETITION work?

Don't get your hopes too high, mate. They're making some really good phones, but unfortunately, they've chosen to stick to their "no update" policy. They've abandoned the Optimus G, just like they've abandoned other flagships before. The same's the case with the G Pro. As it's going to be with the G2, too. I've been really tempted by the G Pro (LG, in my opinion, have the best displays of the lot), but seeing their poor record of updates, it makes me think twice.

You didn't do too much research if you have to ask that. Combine LG's propensity to not release updates with AT&T's 6 month vetting process after its released and you can pretty much expect that nothing north of 4.2.2 will ever hit the G Pro. I'd assume once the G2 is out for 60 days there will be a 4.2.2 International G Pro update then maybe 90 days to 6 months later an AT&T update. By then no one will care and the device will have already been EOL'ed.
If you want a newer Android version on a non Nexus phone you're going to have to flash them with a ROM. Its a sad state of affairs for the Android eco-system but at least there's an upgrade path of some sort, even if its manual.
from what I know, LG has always been very very slow with update.
Better sit and wait for it. I don't think we will be forgotten.
Read this:
LG : Just like Samsung, LG hasn't issued any official release regarding updates but since Nexus 4 is getting one, it is safe to assume that others will follow suit. Remember Optimus G is very similar to Nexus 4 on the insides. The following LG devices may get updated soon.

One of my favorite books ever is Harry Browne's How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World. In it, he talks about "direct actions" and "indirect actions." Direct actions involve doing something to get what you want. Indirect actions involve trying to change someone else's mind so they'll give you what you want. Direct actions are usually quicker, easier and more reliable.
This proposed petition is a perfect example of the difference. We can either spend a lot of time and effort putting together a petition hoping to change LG's mind in a month or two, or we can just root and flash on our own and have the newest OS (4.3) today.
5 cents, please.

Sorry if this an obvious question, but I'd really like to know if I'd have to root/unlock it to flash some more recent Android version.

No man not yet. They do have plans to.
It's true that the answer is a simple no. But I had to learn the hard way when I first jumped into this site a few years ago that people do not like to be asked questions that are easy to answer. You don't even have to look on this website. Simply look at the spec sheet on LG's website and you will see that it comes with 4.2 .2. There is already a rootkit out for the device but no roms at this time. I honestly don't think you need a newer version at this time. 4.2 .2 jelly bean does everything you need in my opinion. Otherwise get a Nexus device. I have a Nexus 4 running Kit Kat Paranoid Android and Franco kernel and I couldn't be happier. But when it comes to my tablet I just wanted for basic consumption and a stock Android is perfectly fine. Just my opinion.

[Q] Chances of LG updating the G Pro at all?

What do you guys think, will LG even update this phone anymore? to any version, or even another OTA value pack that will bring the cool updated features of the LG G2. The reason I'm asking is because I'm fine with stock right now, but I would love to have the speed boost of a newer version of android, that's the only thing keeping me from rooting and "Roming"? again if they still plan on updating this awesome phone than I have no reason to root and rom. What do you guys think?

If I'm honest, I'd say we MIGHT, slim chance MIGHT, see an update to 4.2. Or maybe just a Value Pack update to bring over some features of the G2.
The advertising for our device was botched, and LG even admitted to it. So, the popularity of this device, isn't as high as it should. I wouldn't expect another update, but then again, LG has surprised me before.

I don't see Lg updating the gpro specially with the Lg g X soon to be out for sell, which is exactly the same phone as the gpro spec wise. I hope Lg proves me wrong but for now Im planning on rooting my gpro rather soon. It's a shame the phone was only an at&t exclusive here in the states or else it would have been much more popular and had more support from at&t.
Is there good support for CM out there? Because of the missing sources I assume, because LG isn't releasing them, I guess.

There is a leaked version on 4.2.2 China version floating around the forums, but it is way too buggy to try on other variants. We may see an official 4.2.2 update in the near future, but due to US carriers like AT&T who do like like pushing updates to phones that are not their flagship device, we may nit see that update.
