Oppo N1 CM version ordered - Oppo N1

So I just ordered the limited CM edition of the Oppo N1, to replace this Xperia Z(with its busted camera) It comes with a really cool CM cyan colored case, and some CM stickers.
Only thing is that the CM version is only available in the 16gb flavor, which i kind of regret ordering cause i prefer to have at least 32gb of space.
Also there doesnt seem to be too much activity in these fourms yet. (The phone is still really new so its to be expected) But do you guys think there will be a lot of custom ROM development for this phone? installing custom roms is another reason i bought this phone, since my current android has a locked bootloader.

If any of the major carriers picks up the N1, I'm sure that we'll see a lot of attention here because of having official CM.
This should being a lot of devs to the phone though, just because of how open to development the phone is. I hope to see it really take off and be made into something really great.
I don't really know about custom roms though. We already have official CM and Omnirom. Then there's Oppo's ColorOS which is pretty good already. I think all that we'll really see is modifications to those environments, but nothing really unique (I hope I'm wrong about that). Only time will tell though.

Chance of any major carrier in the US picking up the N1 are slim to none - just because US carriers SUCK.
Thanks to Oppo's cooperation with the community, there's going to be much better support from custom firmwares than with most other devices.
A lot of the activity is over on oppoforums - While I usually prefer to keep all of my work on XDA and don't bother with any other sites, oppoforums is the exception as they are the official forums of the manufacturer (they are not just random fan forums) and as Oppo has been so supportive of many of us, quite a few developers spend lots of time there. (Maxwen himself only maintains threads there these days.)

I would at least like to think that the US carriers would take an example from oppo and embrace what a lot of the devs here are doing. It would also be nice to see some of the phone makers keep their boot loaders un locked as well. But wish in one hand....

Yeah that's not going to happen. Out of the major carriers Verizon has been the ballsy one to release a developer phone with unlocked bootlooaders. They don't release devices because they don't want to have to send out warranty replacements for people who brick devices.

You forget that they only did that because they were forcing devices from OEMs that previously had never locked their devices to lock them down.
AT&T also is now forcing bootloader locking - and as a result HTC now offers the GPe and Dev Edition One units. T-Mobile is forcing Sony to lock down the T-Mobile Xperia Z (not very "uncarrier" of them...). Unlike VZW, HTC can do it directly for people on AT&T and T-Mo since both carriers are GSM - stick your SIM into an unlocked device and go, as opposed to Verizon who make it a nightmare to activate non-VZW devices.
People on GSM providers are lucky in that they can purchase unlocked devices and use them. (N1 plus Straight Talk would be a great combo.)

That's exactly what I'm using. AT&T Sim on Straight Talk. I just had to refill my monthly payment last week. I think I got it like November 18th and haven't had any problems so far. :highfive:

Cool thx for the info. Ive been checking out the oppo fourms now. Has anyone adjusted their dpi settings yet to make it more tablet like? this is what id like to do once i get my order.

That is the ONLY thing that has kept me from ordering a CM edition right now-- a 32GB version paid and on the way to me.
Alas, should have haunted CM and bought when it came out.

Yah i probably should have cancelled it and got the 32gb one. DHL says my cm edition will be here tomorrow though, i cant wait

I have scaled mine on color os. It's really easy to do but I had to add the build.prop line in cause it wasn't in there to begin with. Might be on cm though. I did notice 480 changed nothing, but going down to 400 looks great.

I haven't noticed anything from the DPI change. I switched to omni to try it out just after though, but no weird graphic issues I had noticed.

I just got my CM N1 yesterday and so far I'm loving it. It came with two cases surprisingly, the foldover type and the CM one. I kind of want to change the dpi settings but ive never altered the build prop file before, I'll try figuring it out.
Best thing about this phone that no one really mentioned yet is that the phone doesnt get hot the way my other phones have duribg extensive gaming sessions. Love the battery life so far.

[Q] how come there are no custom roms for this phone?

Just checked the development forums and they are basically empty.
Is it just that the phone is new? Or has there been no way to root it yet? I'm thinking of getting this phone but I'd like to know if I'll have the option of rooting/loading a custom ROM.
One last question - is this phone any different then the nexus? it seems to have the same hardware other then a better camera and have LTE.
Thanks
Nexus 4 is optimus G with no amplifiers/filters for LTE, less storage, different camera, wireless charger, RGB led.
No roms cause thats the international version section, its still kinda rare and the boot still locked.

I'm in Canada so I'm not entirely sure, but if Sprint is like any other carrier they will push an update to 4.2 loooooonnnnnggggg after the devs here have cooked about a dozen customs Rom's for it. They are working on AOSP now. Shouldn't be too long.

From the looks of it, there are a few devs that have this device (judging from the "root-testing" discussion). I'm sure that it won't be too long before we see some work. Still a relatively new device here in the US.
I'm getting my hands on it tonight, so I'll give her a looksie. If I can do something with what I find, then I will. It's my first LG (primary body of work on Moto devices), so it might be slow...

Low Development?

Is it me, or has android development been rather low lately?
With the HTC One and Galaxy S4 being the best phones on the market, I was expecting there to be loads of roms and lots of aosp roms.
Is it because the phones just came out?
well people are still receiving units and people are sitting tight for the 32 and 64 gig variants. just be patient and within a few months development will be in full swing.
plus its not like we dont have great roms now, so its not like we are missing anything (accept maybe halo from paranoid android, but thats it)
revolt is basically the P.A.C roms, and cyanogen mod already has nightlys for our phone
Could be. I'm no dev but I can imagine it being impossible to make an awesome, non crappy Rom so soon while having a personal life and a job to balance. Luckily this phone is cool enough stock, minus the bloatware of course

it is indeed time consuming when factoring in life away from a computer and i'm a guy that lives on a computer basically.
when speaking with the dev team i work with, most of them skipped the S4. they're either staying on S3/Note 2 or they went for the Oppo Find 5, Nexus 4 or are waiting on Nexus 5/Note 3. because Samsung is starting to stray away from being dev friendly with their locked bootloaders and not releasing source for Exynos variants, most of us are fed up. this will likely be my last Samsung device because of this.
also, this is the T-Mob section which is pretty much the smallest carrier of the big 4 here in the US. most of the team i'm a part of are on ATT like i once was...
i wouldn't be surprised if not much more comes down the pipeline for us. there will be more, just not a lot more.

ITs not just the locked bootloader but also making unrootable stock kernels, putting the imei info in a spot where it can be erased. You have to understand that we here are less then 1% of the users samsung targets.

Killa has a point. although i haven't witnessed this in full force here in our sections yet, i have been witness to it many many times.
then there's also the fact that other devs seem to think that new devs are their "competition" and that it is a "popularity" contest. this almost caused me to throw in the towel. i am humble. i do what i do because i want to learn and run my own stuff. i then share my creations in case anyone else would like to run it as well. nothing more, nothing less.
the T-Mobile section has certainly left a bad taste in my mouth in comparison to the ATT section where everyone was extremely friendly.
What happened?
I put out a FULLY WORKING stock base to help move development along give it time

I think if the differences between the Nexus 4 and the Optimus G were really as minimal as they seem than it wouldn't have been such a nightmare for the devs to bring AOSP to this phone in the first place. Still, I'm being optimistic.

It will be a while before the hardware on this phone gets outgrown. That's one of the reasons I originally bought this phone instead of the S3 when it was released....because I knew THAT phone's hardware would eventually be outgrown by software updates. But I know as long as the Nexus 4 is able to handle software upgrades, we will too. And we all know the Nexus devices are first in line with the software upgrades.

I'm brand new to the whole development aspect of Android and have never really peaked at the code so please excuse my ignorance on the topic, but why is GSM to CDMA so hard?
I would think the OS would be built in a way that it utilizes drivers/modules to offload a lot of that dirty work. So it would be something like:
(quick pseudo code so don't get nitpicky.. just trying to get the idea across)
Code:
network = new NetworkDriver('LGOG_CDMA'); //swap out CDMA for GSM drivers, etc..
network.init();
network.sendPacket(your_data_stuff);
and then it would be a matter of then at least trying and hacking the drivers from 4.2, assuming system calls don't change drastically with every minor release wouldn't this work?

I can't speak on specifics, but we had a N4 Conversion Rom for 4.2.2 and it quickly became known to brick certain phones. It was discouraged to use it.

How is LG with the dev community?

I am looking to upgrade to the Sprint LG G2, and the deciding factor is how LG handles the root/ROM community. My current phone is the OG Photon, which Motorola permalocked the bootloader, then canceled ICS. Even unlocked, Motorola had terrible driver support, where camcorders, 4G and more would break on custom ROMs. Being on Gingerbread yet sucks, as such I refuse to buy a phone that can't be unlocked(T-Mobile has horrible coverage in my area, or I'd have bought a Nexus 4 long ago). So I'd like to see the opinions of the OG, to see how support is, and to see how easy it is to unlock. I understand how stock Android functions, but I have a Nexus 10. I'm used to 'fastboot oem unlock' and pure AOSP support/factory images and such haha. Does LG release the stock ROMs or bootloaders or anything? Does LG even use stock fastboot? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to not get burned again(Motorola.....).

I came from the DROID RAZR, and this phone feels like a beast compared to that. Granted, Verizons network was better but I left them on principal. I haven't rooted yet, but I will in 10 more days (return period). I don't believe I will flash a custom ROM right off the bat though because the stock ROM is plenty smooth and does what it's supposed to. That's so not like Motoblur. It was almost necessary to root and flash in order to have a decent user experience on the Motorola phones (I've had 3). I'm pleasantly surprised by this phone and its stock ROM though. If you pick this phone it won't be a mistake.

+1, I have had my phone about 2 months and since then it has gone from a handful of ROMs to 10+, I was even inspired to make my own ROM.
Soon its going to be like the s3 thread.

Lots of development going on! It really is sweet. When I first got here, there were only a few different choices. I had a ton of trouble getting my first builds together(and still do ), but the devs and users here were very knowledgible and helpful. It is one of the best forums I have had the pleasure of being a part of! And we're still rolling out more!.....

Don't play with my heart like that man, lol. I know for a fact that we'll get 4.3 eventually, as well as maybe an official LG update to..... Whatever it is that they're planning on shipping the G2 with (4.2.1 or 4.2.2?). We have a flagship phone with some high end specs. If we don't get an official update for our phones from LG, it'll be because of just outright neglect.
That's what AOSP is for though, I guess.

Considering the Optomus G pro but...

Hey guys thinking of upgrading to this phone and I love the look, feel, and features of this phone, but it doesn't look like you guys have much going on in the way of development? I'd be coming from the Samsung Infuse, so I'm a bit spoiled, when the phone was newer lots of developers were building and porting custom roms, and currently there are about 4 variations of updated (Android 4.1+) roms in development. Currently I'm on Beanstalk for the Infuse (android 4.3) which is a great rom with tons of customization.
I wouldn't mind learning and developing myself but with the apparent shortness of developers this could be slow going. Am I missing something here, is there just not a lot of development because this is a relatively new device, or is it a hard or impossible device to hack?

I came from the note 1 so I know the feeling...but I gotta tell you the stock software is really that good...I don't really miss any of my custom roms I use to run..the only thing I do miss is my theme on the theme engine.
Once cm10 gets closer we may see more since most roms are based off it but who knows.
I wouldn't expect development like what you're use to but like I said I don't miss it at all..
Hopefully the Nexus 5 will have a 5" screen like the rumors suggest and I can finally get a nexus device.
Yeah there a cm10.1 thats almost a daily. Pretty much everything works just a few bugs. There are repositories for a slimbean 4.3 on github but idk how far along that is as there been no release. And over in android forums there a guy working on a stock debloated deodexed rom and the bootloaders only been bypassed for a month or so. It took a while to get it unlocked but development has been goin pretty well since then. Just gonna take time.

So now that the bootloader has been cracked, we should see some more development soon I'd think? I'm just surprised this isn't a more popular device, the specs on it are bad ass.

Well like mrdsl said cm10 is the base for many of the good rom anyway and its almost done so I would expect to see development pick up soon. Especially as att keeps dropping the price makeing this easily the cheapest snapdragon600 device making it very appealing to many more people we should see the community for this phone grow a lot.

Not cracked, just bypassed makes a world of difference and according to what I've been told from LG reps they have no plans on unlocking the bootloader or releasing any source code

My understanding is the source that came from Samsung was leaked so hopefully something similar will happen with LG.

I enjoy mine and it's running stock but rooted. I've been able to do what I want with just root like getting rid of pesky qslides bar. It's cool but I don't use it and the apps are still there so ya. If you get this phone you'll enjoy it. Either way good luck with whatever you choose!
IMHO, a phone that good, stock rom is good enough!
Stock ROM of Gpro is great.....and optimized.
I didnt miss CM or PA at all.
Exactly . Best rom by any android company released

I agree .. it's a good stock rom. I would have to say most people install roms to improve performance but even on the Note2 I had I wasn't installing roms like I did in the past on every device prior.. and in fact this G pro benchmarks about 60 to 100 percent faster than the Note2 in most ... and so far it's been the fastest, slickest device I've used by far. I'm using Apex Launcher for customizing .. and at this point my phone looks like stock Android 4.3 and runs lightning quick.. and battery life has been stellar. And I'm liking and using the quicknote dedicated button! Only thing I miss about my note2 is kinda the S-pen and the inky blacks(contrast)
I have own a lot of Samsung devices...starting from s2 to s4 and I change my s4 for this device because I didn't feel I big upgrade from s3...of course I miss switching rooms but I can tell you that this phone is a lot quicker than many phone out there...the G pro is a lot more responsive than my wife note 2 and what I love about this phone is BATTERY this monster last the whole day

do u kno if theres a black theme where the dialerpad, contact list and system settings are dark?
Stock is good, but modded roms are better. that's my option. Because the stock rom is so perfect, we're hailing the rom, but we better make sure that doesn't offend the developers. Even it is perfect, it is still 4.1, we will need 4.2/4.3 roms very soon, and LG won't catch up with our interest. So, we better appreciate what developers are trying now. Pls don't say we don't want mod roms.
For me, I just have one request to the devs, whatever you do, pls make sure the Quick Remote is in your rom, coz I'm already obsessed with it so much. now I can control everything around me with my phone.
