brightness is contrast? its weird - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

Something odd iv noticed , when i turn up the brightness.. it does not feel like the brightness is being turned up it feels like extreme contrast the colors get deeper and the whites are just painfull to see(too bright).. sure the colors look great but it seems wrong while playing games as if im lacking gamma.
Iv tried changing screen mode it doesnt help too much, everything seems too dark in games (compared too xpeira z ultra and ipad mini retina)with glaring white contrast and unnaturally deep colors. (iv used amoled on the s4 so its not the saturation thats bothering me)

This sounds very weird, mine has much better brightness than the ipad. Sounds faulty to me, my one all the colours just get brighter as you would expect.

Its bright just that black looks tinted whith shades of white as in blacks look gray if turn up the brightness, cant change it i bought it in bangkok.. still a great screen.

Might be light bleed around the edges of your screen

im experenceing the same, if i turn up the brightness it starts look look washed out. it is as you said, its like its playing with the contrast. its more noticable when playing a video that has dark scenes in it, blacks start to look dark grey

more users on a thread in the general section have noticed this, as some have pointed its an issue with the gamma not being calibrated properly and samsung using a non traditional method of back lighting as per anandtechs review.

I read that the screen has a white pixel next to the rgb pixels. Could it be be the white pixel is used for brightness and now results in a black screen looking grey? Haven't noticed it being a problem as I set it on auto.

yes that could be it, i only notice it in a dark environment, however its not an ideal way to do brightness. Auto does not work for me at all its always too dim.

Blue-green tint

Hey xda forum!
I just bought the awesome phone, desire, but i noticed that my screen is blue-greenish tint, compared to my friends Desire. I think i can live with it, but is there anything to do? i've searched for this problem and found that the samsung vibrant also has this problem.
what can i do, is there any way u can change the setting of ur display? turning brightness up helps, but outside, my friends desire is easier to see/read compared to mine.
You may have it set so that brightness is Auto,
Settings > Display > Brightness
It was set to auto but that really look awful
So it is on full brightness now

the amoled screen does have a blue tint, from what i beleve blue led's die out really quickly, Samsung on purpose made the screen to over display blue, and as time goes on, the blue will die to a yellow. So if your phone is more blue today, it will last longer tomorrow. also Samsung tunes all of their displays (TVs and all) towards the bluer end of the spectrum because it gives the display a higher apparent brightness because our eyes perceive bluish white as being brighter than yellowish white even with no actual brightness difference.

thanks for the info, that actually good news followed up on ur info and read about it on wiki.
i guess thats the only way they can expand the life time of old amoled displays.
back to auto brightness
I just bought my desire and have same problem ad u guys. I accepted the fact that blue had a low lifespan, but was still trying to hunt for a solution. After dl many brightness apps I found, Brightness profiles. I started playing around to change the brightness and notice some weird flickness. Example at 74 % it was more "yellow" than on 75%. At 96 % had less blue tint than 100 %. I could see it clear under no light before I went to sleep. So I guess they are defect but Ye, that's my workaround cuz I'm too lazy to return the phone and I like the cool tint now, or well it got better

Can you explain to me how i can do the adjustment?
Do i need to root the tablet or from the menu? (The only tweak i found from menu is the color profiles : amoled basic, amoled cinema, etc) I have a sony xperia phone and it has an option to adjust the white balance with a slider!
Thanks..

Today I got two 8.4 Tabs, both wifi only versions in my hands and I was impressed, that the white color was different. Sadly, the whites on mine were a little bit more yellowish, warmer, and a little bit dirtier. Is this normal for samoled?

my experiences tell not all screens produce the same color, some are yellowish, while others are slightly blue, which can make white color a bit grey, etc
once i wanted to buy a note2 but i found its so bluish and therefore no deal
so each time I buy a phone, esp amoled, I will check the screen (and other things of coz) before I pay
I currently have 2 Galaxy Tab has 10.5 inch at home and deciding which one to keep. The main difference between the two is that one has a newer build date and love one screen seems to be a little more orange brown tint to the white versus the other tablet seems to be a little more blue yellow intent. Other than that perform identically however I did notice that when I run the CPU temperature app that the one with the yellow blue tinted screen seems to run a few degrees cooler most of the time except when using Chrome when where the other tablet seems to run several degrees cooler but only when JavaScript is activated.
One little trick in addition to adjusting the temperature using the adaptive display were changing from AMOLED basic to Evelyn cinema to make it cooler, is to go into the accessibility settings and then go into divisions section and then go into the area where one can do a test of their color as if they needed adjustments because of their own visual impairment. If you run that test and intentionally miss order the color tiles, and then will activate the option to allow you to adjust a slider which can further give you A white screen that seems to be somewhere in between the really blue display and the really warm AMOLED basic

Old thread i know but i just wanted to thank you for that tip Canadoc. I've been struggling with the excessively warm image from my Tab S for a year now and while putting it into "Cinema" mode fixes the white balance it also destroys the contrast by making all subtle dark detail just disappear. This accessibility method has given me much nicer whites without affecting the contrast other than removing the orange haze. I assume the colours are going to be slightly different now but i can't say i've noticed anything there. I wish the Tab S had the same display options as the Galaxy S5 has where you can choose the cooler white level without hammering the contrast too. Maybe it's something Samsung do in order to protect the lifespan of the blue sub-pixel?
So thanks again
When the tab s 8.4 came out the screen quality was a bit variable, but it's been months since I have have read of anybody having a problem, see if you cab get a replacement.

Mine's the 10.5 and this is the second one i got which was exactly the same as the first one in screen tone.
I always wondered if third-world country`s got B-C grade stock, as the consumer protection can be poor or non-existent, maybe it`s cheaper for the re-seller to buy this lower grade stock with screen color problems ect, I dont know?

UK here and bought from John Lewis. I've heard plenty of issues with screen temp on these ones so it's fairly common. Just using it this morning and thinking it perhaps wasn't quite as white as i'd like it and checked the settings to see if it was still in the proper mode and it was, switched it back to the old one and don't know how i ever lived with that brown tone!
Under different light sources it can take a few minutes for your eyes to adapt to the screen, so white can look a little off while this is happening, as the human eye will normally auto white balance anything you look at.
Does you screen when browsing with a white background at night, but not totally dark still not look perfectly white after a few minutes of looking at the screen.
Everybody seems to see colors slightly differently, and some not so slight, did you see the white/gold blue/black dress debate.

No it never looks like clean white to me unless i tilted it slightly back or forward and then i could see the tone shift to a cooler temp. I do keep the brightness down to under 10% most of the time and that doesn't help the white level either.
I can't say i ever understood the dress image, you can factually measure and define the colour on that one so i don't know why people were confused.
Have you had anybody else check your screen, do they see the same problem, though at 10% brightness the screen is never going to look really white, I always keep mine on Auto -5 , I have the RGB sensor set on Auto i cannot even remember what it`s really called as i have never changed it, but in Auto it is supposed to keep the whites looking white, what is yours set too.

Warm colours
My tab s 8,4 screen has a brownish layer, which makes whites mor brown and the colours less sharp. But when I put pressure on my tab, the "layer" goes away.

Anyway, i haven't had anyone else look at mine but i don't need anyone to anyway, it's a very overly warm tone. I've never used the RGB adaptive sensor thingy as it only works in a few apps that i never use anyway.

Do you see a much whiter tone when you choose Cinema mode? If so and you like it then you really should try the method in this thread to keep it without also cranking up the contrast.

Contrast (true blacks)

How well do you know your fifty shades of grey? Rate this thread to express how good the LG G5's display contrast is. A higher rating indicates that black is true black, rather than a very dark gray.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
will never be as good as oled but surprisingly does a pretty good job
Well it gets the job done could be better
Compared to my G3 its miles better. and compared to that over saturated piece of garbage i would say job well done LG.
May not compete with the S7 OLED in terms of black levels but I'm pretty certain the colours are more natural and realistic.
The colors are more natural and the contrast (black levels) is just too damn good compared to my G3. Well done LG!

Do you find the G5's screen cooler?
I tried a side by side comparison with my G3 at full brightness, the G3 screen has a red tint to the white, while the G5 has a turquoise tint... I wonder which one is actually closer to real colours

All I can really say is the black is pretty good for a non amoled screen, if you want to compare it a amoled screen, may be in a few years time, at present nothing comes close to amoled.

Thanks! I guess colour accuracy is very subjective when it is not on paper
I found the white a bit more white at full brightness, but a bit bluish at lower brightness, if only we could correct it! haha, Lg has this strange tendency to make cooler displays since the G4 (the V10 has it too) They go around 7800-8000k instead of the ideal 6700k
If i let a brigth image for ~10 minutes the pixels stuck in this image for ~30 minutes and for that time i can see in grey that image.
Guys, do you have screen bleed on black with your G5s?

I also notice that my screen is a bit yellowish in low brightness..

is it just me or is the display pretty disappointing

i don't know why i seem to be the only one, i always wanted a note because it's been praised as the best display of all time i finally got a note 10+ and the display disappoints me to no end, first off the colors are dull, my xperia xz1 on super vivid mode has more vibrant colors, second off the brightness it's not amazing if i compare my note 10+ to my huawei mate 10 pro the huawei appears more vibrant and bright, the huawei is running a custom rom, my note 10 + has custom white balance settings with green and red turned down to 0 and it's still too yellow for my taste the screen mode is itensive and yes bluelight filter is off, when i use the note 10+ on it's own i get used too it and i see no issues with the display but then i start up my mate 10 pro and get a much whiter better white and overall brighter image, my note 10+ is set to +10 brightness and high performance mode all auto brightness off and max brightness, white still appears dull colors appear dull, why am i the only one who feels this way?
Was gonna ask if your blue light filter thing was on. The white seers into my brain unless I have the filter on. This seems to be the best display I've ever used. And you're saying other phones are brighter? I haven't found a single phone brighter than this one. Maybe a defective screen?

my tweaks are the following
max performance with brightness 10+ enabled and brightness slider to the highest possible settingm, intensive with the temp slider to the far left as in coldest as it gets then advanced white balance both red and green turned down to 0 blue turned to max meaning the screen should have an extreme blue tint it doesn't, i tried the google books method and blue light is always off when i launch the app so it's not that, i even tried calibrating colors under accessability where you have to rearrange colored balls result are almost identical to what i had with a slight yellow tint to the white so worse than before i turned that off again
i had this issue with the original display and now the replacement one when i havenothing to compare to white looks great colors pop screen looks good white feels slightly dull but it's hard to tell, but then i go back to my xperia xz1 or mate 10 pro and feel a huge difference in white and overall color performance, both displays pop a lot more than the note 10+
might i add i am ultra sensitive to warm displays so what looks great to someone else might look like a yellow mess to me i always increase blue on all displays i have my sony af9 is set to cold with all color enhancers to max i need colors that pop with no yellow tint what so ever, i am not a fan of accurate colors at all
Being the most accurate display of colors doesn't mean it'll be your favorite. Maybe you prefer less accurate (seriously, no snark here). But brightness should be pretty clear cut... No idea why yours wouldn't be as bright.

well i already know i hate accurate colors i want bright vibrant cold colors anything accurate to me looks dull and yellow the surface pro i have which is known for it's accurate calibration almost looked black and white to me until i got it decent by forcing intel control panel and increasing color intensity but the screen was so terrible on it i stopped using it i just couldn't deal with that display so it's been collecting dust ever since, my xperia xz1 is using super vivid mode with blue turned up to 171 the screen becomes complete trash without super vivid mode and it becomes the best display i have ever seen with super vivid mode turned on, i wasn't a huge fan of the display on the xperia 1 either that phone has no super vivid mode and the display was rather dull to me but the brightness and white was miles better than the note 10+ especially when it forced the brightness to max on apps like youtube (it dimmed outside of certain apps which i could not handle so i sent it back but on youtube the brightness was just mindblowing the white was so perfect and clear then it wen't gray as soon as it would dim when i exited the youtube app)

I believe that the Note interface is more greyish than white. This is why even without the blue filter, if you do not increase backlight alot, it is not quite white.
It can be seen on the Home screen, when you group-up some apps icons in a folder, have a look at the white of the icons and compare it to the white of the folder itself. Not same white. The surrounding white of the folder is grey, not white.
Same goes for the google search on home screen, it is not white compared to the the white of say, the Google Apps icon.
Maybe try another theme if you do not like it ?

if you're using the S7 vs the S7+ then it's not surprising, LCDs do not produce blacks like AMOLED.
Superb screen display on Tab S7 using since 2 Months. i have no issues of colors nor any degradation of screen. Being an Amoled fan . I love the perfect blacks on my Old Tab S5E although more.
lot of negative Paid marketing is done against top companies before launch of a flagship device by Rival companies
So I noticed this same green tint issue. Great on the left side and it fades into a greenish tint. I assumed it was the screen but I was playing around with it and it doesn't seem to consistently appear. If I load up the play store, at lower brightness, I see it. When I open the settings menu for the tablet, same grey background and the greenish tint isn't there. The brightness hasn't changed either. I started looking at other grey screens and I see the same thing. I'm not saying it's not an issue but I would think it would be fairly consistent across grey backgrounds at the same brightness. I see it in dark mode in Google apps but not is Samsung apps or even Nova launcher settings. Weird..
I greys are a slightly different shade but the same brightness. The playstore you can see on the right side. Nova settings and one of my live wallpapers settings are both grey and no greenish tint.
Anyone else notice this?

if you're using the S7 vs the S7+ then it's not surprising, LCDs do not produce blacks like AMOLED.

Also, enabling the "blue light filter" severely degrades the black level. I understand it's useful for those who experience eyestrain reading white text on a perfectly black background, hopefully either Samsung or a community member can change it for those who prefer the best blacks while still attenuating the blue colors.
Hello!
I got mine a few days ago and first thing I noticed was a color tint on grey goint to green or yellow, especially on the lower brightness levels. Especially compared with my older Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014) also black ist something like anthracite, but not deep black.
So I downloaded a display test app from Playstore Display Tester, and guess what! Black is really dark black, white is bright white and grey is looking much better with almost no color tint.
Could soomebody else check it?
Btw.: Firmware is T870XXU2BUD2 (Android 11).
