Can N7 2013 3G/LTE make calls in some way? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi, I've got a Nexus 7 2013 Wi-Fi only but this device is very nice and having a 7" device with me everyday is not a problem, so I'm thinking to sell my smartphone, sell my Nexus and buy another Nexus 2013 3G/LTE.
Is there a way to make calls? Maybe installing a ROM or doing some hack, everything...
If yes, what must I do?
Thank you and sorry for my bad, bad, bad english.

You could use Google Voice? That's what I use allows text as well.

No, I can't: here in Italy no one use Google Voice, my friends and my family use Vodafone IT and we call each other free with some offers.
I'm looking for some way to make regoular calls.
Thank you

I think the only way to make calls is to use VoIP. You can set in the app that when you call from VoIP it will show your real number.. but people will not be able to call you back. Or maybe you could leave your phone at home, and set call forwarding to an VoIP number?

They don't need Google voice for you to use it.
With voice+ on cm11 you can text through Google voice to any regular phone number.

There could be a way in the future with some modification, I read the other day that AT&T and Tmobile are testing VoLTE (Voice Over LTE). Sounds like the ATT could be out sooner than Tmobile. Maybe we will get something at the end of the year.

I use a playstore free app called Fongo...has all of the free services of a home Voip service...echo is an issue though but works great with a set of headphones. Unlimited free calling to all major cities in Canada...ANY phone. Only in Canada though.

It is impossible. U only make call through apps such as Skype, Viber or Whatsapp :v

No plan

If I but a epic form someone and I don't get a plan is the phone still functionable like wifi and GPS and other things?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes. You'll have to skip activation then switch wifi on and sign into your google account.
Yes wifi and gps will work. Gps will require 3rd party software though. Google maps won't work because you won't have data. google maps will work over wifi if your in an area where wifi is all over the place.

Unless I can find someone that will pay decently for it, I intend to keep mine after I upgrade my contract and use it as a toy .
Would you still be able to make calls, either through Google voice (with a google #), or through skype or some other app? This would essentially allow the phone to operate completely without a phone bill from what I understand. The only issue is being within range of wifi.

I do this on my iTouch(the only Mac device I've ever bought ).
The simple answer is yes. Wifi powered apps can run through wifi while the phone CDMA signal is off (airplane mode?). Without getting too complicated, here's what you need:
1. Google Voice Account
2. Google Voice App (for SMS)
3. Sipgate.com Account (for Free Inbound Calls)
4. Sipdroid App registered with Sipgate account (for Calls)
5. Google Voice Callback (to Connect Free Inbound Sipgate Calls)
4-2. Acrobits Softphone has a built in GV dialer and will replace steps 4 and 5 for about $8
Free messaging and calls on a wifi only Epic. Win.

I have recently found a app called GrooVe IP.
thats all you need to do is login to your google voice account with the app.. and it makes and receives calls thru wifi, 3G/4G..
I have used it recently when I forgot to pay my sprint bill.. and they cut my phone half way off.. I was still able to make calls using this app..
the app is like 4 dollars..
here is the link with more info on it

Nice find! Not a very old app apparently... although I'm curious how it works. Google Voice doesn't have it's own Sip service, it simply connects two numbers together with your Voice # in between. You can call out from Gmail though, so maybe it's making use of that?
Either way, nice!
Thx u guys

Yay! Quoting myself!
Moving on! So anyhow! I figured out how this works. Gmail started allowing calls out from its chat window about 8 months ago or so. Apparently, sometime after that, calls in were also allowed, making your Gmail window a free phone! I had already given up and moved on with a Sip phone and service, which allows you to not always have the Gmail window open to use... lol. But regardless, Groove IP takes advantage of these facts, and now basically pulls in your Google Talk functionality to make and receive calls all by itself!
What this means, is that under phones settings in Google Voice, you will have to enable call forwarding to Google Talk for Groove IP to completely work. Now know this, Google Talk does not use the latest and greatest Codecs for SIP, so it may not carry as good a call quality as using the GV + SIP option, but it certainly is simpler!
And with GV + Sprint integration now live and open, you can make your backup device carry the same number and functionality as your Sprint phone!
I have tried sipgate and the 'text you back' feature hasn't been working for me. Any suggestions?

Does anyone know of an IOS app that does the same thing? I've got extra ipods/iphones but not android devices. (I've looked at Fring but I assume it isn't doing this and is instead encouraging you to use their paid SIP gateway.)
Sorry for the delay in response, I try to have a life with my Fiancee on the weekend .

Acrobits Softphone will allow you to set a SipGate, or any similar SIP account, along with Google Voice as a call out dialer. Using this method, it will essentially dial itself, you'll answer SipGate through the app, and then it will call the other person. This app is available on both IOS and Android now, and was the best setup up until Groove IP. It may still be better, due to the different manners of operation, but the all-in-one solution of Groove is clearly very nice. However, the Softphone method is the best available AIO on IOS.

[Q] anyone know how to make free phone calls through wifi?

Edit: skip it all, here is the answer.. install these two apps and follow the directions closely!
Google Voice free

I think there was something about that on one of the android sites this week. I have no need so I can't remember which.
Try googling it.
Get GrooVe IP from the Amazon Appstore (only $1.99). It makes VOIP calls using your Google Voice number.
Even better-- if you have the Sprint/GV integration, it makes calls from your regular number. Works great!
Set up a Google voice number on the ccomputer and download the app on your phone. No need for other sh1t. You can make calls, text.. just waiting for mms now
Gimme a couple a days to come up with a new sig that is cool.

GV doesn't do it over WiFi, it uses your radios. Which is why, in the beginning of GV, people were urged to not use it for calling - because the way GV works, Google actually calls you and connects - which means you're dialing a landline and lost Sprint's mobile-to-mobile free-calls. It ate into your minutes, even if you were dialing a cell - because it's really Google that's connecting the two magically.
With the sprint/gv integration, they made it so it's considered mobile-to-mobile, but it's still over the cell radio, not wifi.

[Q] International SMS via Wi-Fi?

Sorry, but I am new to Android, and my google GN does not even get here until tomorrow. I was wondering what is the best app that allows you to text via wi-fi, and if so, does it work for international numbers? For example, in Windows or on iPad, I believe that you can do this via Skype, but does this also work on the Android version of Skype, or is there another app that is a better choice? I think Google Voice may do this as well.
I was originally looking for Prepaid plans that offer this, but Straight Talk currently does not, and their $45 plan appears to be the best one going, as I need more than 100 minutes of talk time per month. I know that Simple Mobile offers free International texting, but the reality is that in most instances where I would need to use this, I would be in an area where I could have Wi-Fi access.
Thanks for any help or insight.
If you use Google Voice, that number should be able to text any number for free over just data (not over standard SMS protocol).
Thanks - I just Googled this topic and added GV to my post - my current Sprint TP2 does not have that capability, and as I noted, my GN gets here tomorrow.

I don't get what you're saying... Google Voice lets you SMS with a new number (or current number if you port it in) and text over data (phone or PC) with that number. Doesn't matter what phone you have.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. My old phone (HTC TP2) on Sprint was WinMo - there is no Google Voice App for WinMo, and my Sprint number was a corporate number, and Sprints GV integration does not work with corporate numbers. So, for me, I am trying to cut down to one number for everything anyhow, so using GV for SMS and having my GV number show up is ideal anyhow.

You don't have to have Sprint integration with GV to use GV. You can port your number directly, or have another number just for int'l texting.

That is true on Android or IOS, but not on Windows Mobile. There used to be a 3rd party Google Voice App (iDialer, I think), but it is not supported or available anymore. I just came across another one on xda called Google Visual Voice that I am going to try out, but it is sort of a moot issue at this point as I will be on Android with a new Google Galaxy Nexus tomorrow...

Okay, so I have had my GN for about 5 days now, on Simple Mobile, which supports international texting, but the data side is pretty slow (I have the $40 3G service right now). So, I decided to test Google Voice to text via the browser, and guess what? They do not support international texting. So, I will need to look for another way to do this using the data plan and not SMS as a regular phone function. I will do some more searching, but does anybody have a suggestion in the meantime? Thanks.
UPDATE: Looks like Skype will work, have a test text out right now, will see if I get a response.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Yes, Skype works. Not the most elegant solution, but it does work. Ideally I would like to end up with a single messaging app, like Google SMS that would work internationally, but we will see.

Google Voice on N7

Please bear with me since I am a noob with this device but I just tried using Google Voice on the N7. What it did was it called my Android phone and used the phone to call the number I wanted. I thought I would be able to make a call directly on the N7 the same way Skype works on the N7. I'm not sure what the point is of the tablet calling my phone and then having to use the phone to call the number I want. It's almost like a remote control for my phone. Am I doing something wrong?
nope, not doing anything wrong. but google voice isn't what you apparently think it is (no voip)- it is primarily a service for handling 'regular' phone calls.

I'd recommend GrooveIP. The only issue with these solutions is that you need to do extra work to get incoming calls to your device but GrooveIP does outgoing just great.

Made several calls to day using my WiFi tablet with a app called Groo
ve IP Lite that uses Goggle Voice. I also am using my cell phone as the forwarding number. So when I make a call with the Goggle Voice via Grove IP lite, it rings on both devices. I even called my cell phone from my tablet. Calls that I make on either device using that Goggle Voice number show up on both. You can not receive calls but you get a message that I call was made to you.
Thought that this might be what you are looking to do.....................if does make my tablet work like a phone through WiFi.
+1 cyaclone
Probably the easiest and cost effective way is to use Google Voice and Groove IP (They have a Lite version too).
Google Voice, through a browser, I think, should have a little tutorial on how to set it up to forward to your other device(s) too.
