Losing OTA - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Will I lose the ability to do OTA updates if I flash a custom ROM or custom kernel?
What if I just flash a custom kernel by itself and keep stock ROM?
Currently rooted on stock 4.4.2.

Yup..
If the OTA detects either a Custom recovery, a Custom kernal or any build Prop mods..
the OTA will fail..
What I do.. Its a long method, but it works.. make a Nandroid of your Data partition only..
then flash to stock, then OTA, then install a custom recovery.. then restore your Data partition..
All should be well.. Im sure there is a much easier way like extracting the System.img from the OTA or from the Stock rom,
and Dirty flashing just the System.img.. That should also work.. OTAs are kinda hard on Rooted devices..;'
If your coming from a Custom Rom, you can wait for the Rom Devs to catch up, and then dirty flash the updated rom with out having to do a clean wipe.. But I make a Nandroid of my Data partition and restore it if I need to do a wipe..
Hope this helps

I see. I'll give that workaround a try. But will the OTA fail from rooted stock? Or does the fail only apply to a custom recovery or custom kernel?

If you have a Custom Kernel, and or a Custom Recovery.. or even a Build Prop mod
the OTA will fail.... I do a Full Nandroid just to be sure if there are any mistakes you can revert..
Flash to Stock, do the OTA.. then use Wugfresh's tool to reroot, and reinstall a Custom Recovery like TWRP. Then just restore the Data partition in recovery..
I cant find it, but there is a Thread or 2 on the topic..
I have so many saved it hard to go through them all..
Its where I got my info in the past..

[Q] Upgrading from ICS to JB

Hi guys.
Today I finally received an OTA upgrade from ICS to JB Android. I made a backup, then from settings i let system to update my ROM. It's going good so far, but when it's rebooting, it's going to recovery where the process is stopped. I have unlocked bootloader and rooted my HOX, but still i have a stock ROM. I tried to toggle off checking signatures in cwm but with no result. What can I do to keep root and upgrade to JB?
Thanks.
1. Stock ROM
2. Stock kernel
3. Stock recovery
Make sure you haven't removed system apps. Root doesn't matter.

And make sure to put back the stock recovery
http://db.tt/U5CK4noo
You can root again by flashing your custom recovery AFTER updating to JB.
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
So, at start I have to flash stock recovery. Have I to relock the bootloader? Then I'll update to JB. Of course I want to root, so just flash custom recovery and su? Thanks in advance
Make sure the rom is stock, then flash the STOCK recovery and update the phone, then flash a custom recovery back and root the JB rom again. No need to lock the bootloader !
You must mean stock recovery correct?

You downloaded my stock recovery and renamed it to recovery.img ?
Recovery from a nandroid is never a stock one, a nandroid backup can only be done with a custom one
Uuuups, what a mistake Thanks! I'll try to flash yours one.

Does anyone have the flashable 1.10.605.10 update?

Trying to update firmware to 1.10.605.10 after S-OFF.
Changing recovery to stock, then taking OTA errors out for me using the stock ROM.
Thanks!

I tried flashing the modified zip, as well as the original, with twrp recovery and both received an error.
The modified zip gave this error -
"Error flashing zip '/sdcard/modified_OTAPkg.zip' Updating partition details..."
The rom I am using is the VZW Stock Rooted deodex, should I be using something different?

The update doesn't work with a deodexed ROM. It also likely doesn't work if you've removed some of Verizon's bloat software on the stock odexed ROM.
@CNexus wants to make an updated flashable zip for rooted users, as well as a fully flashable ROM (if I am reading that right), but needs the right framework files.
Both the modified zips, and the modified recovery won't work for me for some reason.
The modified zip just errors out in TWRP.
If I try the stock recovery method -
Fastboot signed stock recovery
Take the OTA w stock ROM
Errors out
or
Flash Andy's odex stock ROM
Fastboot signed stock recovery
Take OTA
Updates firmware to .10
Fastboot TWRP, flash SU
Restore stock ROM from TWRP backup
Firmware is back to .08 now
Does restoring the stock ROM in TWRP downgrades my firmware to .08 again?
Confused :/

Restoring a backup generally completely wipes out the current software in place. If you flashed the odexed ROM, took the OTA with the stock recovery, then restored a backup of .08, then you lost the .10 update because it was on that installed ROM. You overwrote it.
If you want the update, which was so small and negligible that it's not really even important enough to take, then you have to flash the odexed ROM, take the update with the stock recovery, and stay on that ROM. That's the only way that works presently. No one has released a working odexed or deodexed ROM with the update included, nor is there a working flashable zip that doesn't require you to be on and stay on the stock odexed ROM.

Actually if you took the update while on stock recovery...the actual firmware portion did update and will stay updated regardless of what rom software version you are running. The update was both a software (.10) AND firmware update.

As stated earlier the OTA doesn't play well with deodex ROMs. I figured out how to do this with no issue. Be warned as this will wipe your device. Download the decrypted RUU and boot into RUU mode and follow Zarboz's instuctions for installation. That will get you back to stock. What I did was:
relock bootloader for RUU flash
flash the RUU
OTA (don't set up your phone bc bootloader unlock will wipe it again )
unlocked bootloader again
installed custom recovery via fastboot
made unrooted stock nandroid
flash SuperSU
Also, once you have custom recovery installed you can pull the recovery_signed.img from the decrypted RUU zip and copy/paste it into fastboot directory and flash stock recovery at will for updates for your stock ROM. Tested that method and it works. I did it this way bc I was having the same issues with failed updates so I said screw it and went full on RUU

Unable to update stock rom with CWM

Hi everybody!
I just have restored my phone with the stock rom i previously backed up using CWM,but i didn't unrooted it;but now,the stock rom tell me that there's an official update OTA to do,and i agree with the warning, and start to download the update;when it finishes, the phone tells me to reboot to start the update..and when it do that, the phone reboot in the CMW recovery, telling me:
E:Invalid command argument
and the phone didn't do the update. what's the problem with it?i have also to unroot the phone for doing the updates?or i have to install the stock recovery?
Thanks for the help!
You need stock recovery. Bug it will not restore CWM back up. The only way for you is to flash stock ROM again. Or use stock ROM without ota update. You will not be able to update it with CWM.

Custom ROM 4.3 to. kitkat 4.4

I am running IOKP 4.3.1 on my nexus. I have downloaded the OTA update for kitkat 4.4. Can I flash the 4.4 update from cwm or so I have to return to stock then flash it? I ask this because my stock backup will not restore due to md5 mismatch. Thanks for any advice.
Anyone?
Just backup, restore a flash the 4.4 ROM.

OK I've backed up iokp. Can I now flash 4.4 from cwm? Or do I need to flash stoc first?

You can only flash an OTA if you are on stock ROM.
OK but how do I get back to stock ROM then? My backup won't restore.

If you don't know how to flash back to stock manually you are probably better off using one of the toolkits in the development forums.

Tasssadar has some stock flashable zips here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48544617&postcount=255
Don't forget to thank him if you use it.
They seem to be stock kitkat. I would need to flash stock JB and then flash KK though, yeah?

No. Just wipe(cache, dalvik cache, data, and system) and then flash KK and you are done.
Another edit: Since you can't use a computer for this, you should download a few other ROMs so you have something else to flash if something goes wrong. I would really only recommend upgrading if you have access to a computer. Things can go wrong very easily. Good luck.
Thanks very much!
They aren't update custom ROMs, they're like factory images. You just need a kitkat 4.4 custom ROM that you can flash in custom recovery. If you don't have custom recovery on your tablet, you need to use your PC to flash it, or just boot temporarily.
Afterwards, restore your tablet, clear cache and dalvik cache, install zip, choose your custom rom, and flash it.
If there is an update for a ROM (such like nightlies for CM) you wouldn't have to restore the tablet, just flash the updated custom ROM because it's just an upgrade.

Official upgrades can`t be flashed in cwm.. Only with odin... If you are on stock rom now, flash it over with odin without any wipes and you will fine.. But if you have a custom rom you must be carefull `cause you will lose root, cwm, maybe data and your system will become odexed and none of the patches/mods will work again.

oh ok, thanks buddy
You can also find the stock rom made for CWM, it's already rooted and deodexed. A LOT of junk removed. All stuff works. (No system updates; who needs it anyway) This might help you.
