Official upgrades can`t be flashed in cwm.. Only with odin... If you are on stock rom now, flash it over with odin without any wipes and you will fine.. But if you have a custom rom you must be carefull `cause you will lose root, cwm, maybe data and your system will become odexed and none of the patches/mods will work again.

oh ok, thanks buddy

You can also find the stock rom made for CWM, it's already rooted and deodexed. A LOT of junk removed. All stuff works. (No system updates; who needs it anyway) This might help you.

Help for first time Note 2 user.

Hello. I just ordered my galaxy note 2 N7100 Int. version(not the n7105 lte one). I live in Greece and the phone should have arrived by 15-20 January. Even though I'm not an android noob and im using android for 2-3 years and made my own ROMs as well, I have no clue how Samsung phones work. So I would like a detailed guide please about the steps I'm will mention:
*What is the latest official firmware I can install on my N7100? How can I do that?(I'm not familiar with OTA's)
*How can I root that firmware? What is the best option for rooting it?(chainfire etc but give details on how to do it with those methods)
*Do I need to unlock my bootloader to install custom recovery and flash a rom?If so how can I do that?
*Is Philz recovery fully working and compatible with 4.4+ ROMs? If so how can I install it? If not whats the best recovery with support for 4.4+ ROMs?
*What is the best ROM with the features of Note 3?(stable no bugs good for gaming) How can I install that ROM?
*What is the best 4.4 ROM?(stable no bugs good for gaming) How can I install that ROM?
*How do I backup my IMEI?
*What is the procedure to install a ROM?(on my old phone it was : 1)Backup 2)Factory reset 3)Wipe cache, dalvik cache, system, data, and again format cache 4)Install ROM 5)Install GAPPS and reboot. Done. Are there any differences here?
I wont buy a new phone for the next 1-2 years at least so I wont my new phone to be safe when playing with custom ROMs. If you are about to comment without a detailed guide or at least telling me where to look for that guide dont comment at all, it wont help me.Thanks in advance and sorry for the trouble.
Too many questions to answer and therefore I recommend to go to the Development section for further information. Each Rom has its own install instructions, just read there and learn more about your device :good:
You can't get spoonfed here, sorry mate.
To try to answer just a few... really too many questions, you need to read a bit before posting so many questins
*What is the latest official firmware I can install on my N7100? How can I do that?(I'm not familiar with OTA's)
MKD - Indian, MK9 - european, ML3 - asian. They all work on any int 7100 model.
*Do I need to unlock my bootloader to install custom recovery and flash a rom?If so how can I do that?
You just have to root.
*What is the best ROM with the features of Note 3?(stable no bugs good for gaming) How can I install that ROM?
Most popular are DN3 and Phoenix (also maybe DR Ketan's custom ROM, but it isn't developed anymore). I personaly use Criskelo which is really stable and smooth.

In Phils's recovery (I recommend v 5.15, not v 6.x - because of Aroma bug) you do "prepare for ROM flashing" and then flash ROM. Erasing dalvik/system/cache etc can't hurt but is not necessary, all is done in one go. From ODIN - go to download mode, connect to PC, run ODIN and select md5 file to flash.

Hey @dalanik thanks for your quick answer. I have some more questions for you. First of all, are 4.4+ roms stable for this phone for daily use and gaming? Is Philz recovery 5.15 compatible with 4.4+ roms? How do I root my device(latest official firmware) and how do I use ODIN(why is odin needed, what is odin doing)? What about backing up my IMEI? Thanks in advance.
I haven't tried 4.4 ROMs so I don't knpw. As for rooting just have a look at the forum there are several threads on rooting. Odin flashes ROMs.

What should I use to flash roms, odin or recovery(twrp, cwm etc)?
Actually Odin can be used to flash I.e. bootloader which recovery can't. Odon is used to flash official Samsung stock ROMs in md5 format while recovery is used fir custom ROMs mostly with the Aroma installer.

So to flash Phoenix ROM or DN3 or any KK ROM I dont need ODIN correct?
I think if youre on 4.1.2 you need to flash new bootloader. Each rom has instructions so hav3 a look at rom thread

First when arrives your phone see the firmware version, if it has 4.3 and flash custom recovery firmware etc you loose your warranty and for the moment is not possible to take warranty back. If your firmware is 4.1.2 the things are more simple you can flash everything (except 4.3 official bootloader also 4.3 official firmware witch includes bootloader) and have when you need your warranty back.
All your answers are in the forum search for start dr.ketan threads. You can start from here (old thread but very good writed for 4.1.2 there are some differences with 4.3 you have to check before act for example mobile Odin trigger the warranty at 4.3 also triangle away cannot affect knox etc etc)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896696
he has plenty of guides solutions etc and I think you will find many answers for your questions. Now if your phone is at 4.1.2 firmware and you want to flash 4.3, root etc or 4.3 custom rom (not all) repost to guide you how to flash and also have your warranty back.

Hello @dalanik, @vagsvag I just got my Note 2(Italy version) GT-N7100. Here's the details from the settings menu
*Android 4.1.2(gives me the ability to update to 4.3)
*Baseband N7100XXDMF1
*Kernel 3.0.31-1071214
*Build number JZO54K.N7100XXDME6
The phone is COMPLETELY stock, no root no custom recovery nothing. Can you please give me full instructions on how to install this ROM please?
About 4.4 ROMs, i have tried them.
Things that don't work:
- Bluetooth ear piece???
- Camera is not 100% stable
- I don't have sound when recording videos (Could be just me, no one else is mentioning it )
- Bad FPS in games (tried many kernels and governors, still bad. AGAIN, could be just me, no one else is mentioning it )
And that's it.
For DN3
- Root
- Flash recovery (TWRP my choice)
- Full wipe (data,system,internal storage,cache)
- Flash DN3 (you will now get a bootloop)
- Flash it ONE MORE TIME,
There is something wrong with AROMA installer, if you look closely it doesn't install the ROM for the 1st time, hence the bootloop.
Also, you DON'T NEED TO FLASH the new bootloader. I'm on the DMG1 bootloader and i'm running DN3.
If you don't flash the bootloader, you have to flash the Wi-Fi fix, to get the Wi-Fi working.
You may also experience a reboot once in a week or 2 weeks, it's random.
I personally don't want to flash the BL, because i'm terrified of ODIN. I have a bad history with it

@Mashed_Potatoes thanks for your reply but please make things a little bit more detailed..
- Root -- how can I root my device? Link?
- Flash recovery (TWRP my choice)? I want Philz recovery. How do I flash it? Is there any problems with flashing DN3 with Philz recovery?
-What are the prerequisites to get DN3 ROM to work FULLY? Have you noticed any important bugs while using it? What bootloader do I have to flash to get DN3 ROM to work? How can I flash that bootloader? Remember I'm on stock 4.1.2
-How can I access Recovery on this phone?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKfURLDlCRg - How to flash recovery
I don't know about Philz i had it before TWRP but that was before DN3 existed =D
I found no bugs in DN3, its a bit slower than 4.1.2 and the ram usage is higher
You flash the bootloader through ODIN too but i cant help you about that i don't know
Once you root your phone download an app called Quick Boot which will allow you to access Download and Recovery modes with one click
Hey guys I need a little bit more help.
 @Androidwizzard @dalanik @vagsvag
I successfully rooted my device with CF and ODIN and now I installed latest Philz recovery as well.
One last question.. I'm now on official 4.1.2(again xD)and like I have said again I want to install DN3 ROM.. What bootloader do I need to flash to get DN3 to work? How do I know what bootloader Im using right now?
What I think the procedure is
1)Install 4.3 bootloader while running 4.1.2
2)Make a backup with Philz recovery
3)Full wipe and install 4.3 DN3 ROM.
Is this correct? Dont forget to answer the other things I asked you!! Thanks in advance!!

There is only ONE bootloader you can flash that is KNOX-Free, and that is MJ5. All other bootloaders have KNOX. Do not use Wi-Fi fix as that will fix your Wi-fi but may introduce instability, reboots, etc. Well, not the Fix, the fix is fine, but the rest of the old bootloader. Just flash MJ5.
I'd do backup FIRST and then flash bootloader.

FIRST of ALL: Don't use the latest Philz, RUN 5.15 is the best way to flash 4.3 custom roms with Aroma installer!
As mentioned: You got to take MJ5 if you ever want to go back to stock 4.1.2 at any time, besides you won't have wifi issue.
Only way to change bootloader: PC Odin.
Befor starting to install a custom rom read the instructions on the OP of the desired rom. There you find all necessary wipes to do :good:

@Androidwizzard so to flash DN3 ROM this is what I have to do:
1)Flash Philz 5.15 recovery with ODIN
2)Flash MJ5 bootloader while running official 4.1.2
3)Make a backup of current with recovery
4)Make the necessary wipes with recovery and flash DN3 ROM
Is everything I mentioned above correct?
Also how do I go back COMPLETELY stock if I ever want?
And btw is DN3 ROM good for games? I play lots of heavy games like GTA:SA etc..
Thanks A LOT guys for helping me, I know I'm annoying but I'm really new to Samsung and this all seems really strange

[Q]A few questions about rooting/odin/recovery

Thank you for taking time out of your day to help.
I just got an s4 on tmobile and I have some questions. I tried rooting it and ran into an error. I found an answer online, which was to flash a stock 4.3 rom via odin, then try the CFT autoroot. So it's all good and I'm rooted. I just have some questions:
1. Why was I able to flash a rom via odin, when all the rom installation guides I see require a CWM or some other recovery?
2. When I try to boot up into recovery I think it's the stock recovery and not a custom recovery that allows me to install a zip. When I used CFT auto root, I saw it booted into a custom recovery to root, did it just get deleted after that?
3. How will my root work with the 4.4 ota? When I check for software updates it says my phone has been modified so they aren't available. So how can I get the ota? Am i better off flashing a custom 4.4 rom? I want closest to stock as possible, so if you have any recommendations for stock 4.4 roms that would be great. Or can I flash the 4.4 stock rom as I did with odin?
4. How does tethering work with root? If I have unlimited data with 2.5gb tethering data, now that I'm rooted, can tmobile tell I'm tethering if I'm using a root tethering app?
Again thank you very much for your help.
1. You did not flash a ROM with Odin, it was firmware.. Very different
2. Yes, I believe that's what cf-auto root does
3. Yes you can flash a 4.4 firmware like you did with 4.3 as long as its for your device, or flash a custom recovery and then a 4.4 ROM
4. Not too familiar with this, but it might be possible to get around it

No if it is an untouched fully stock rom/firmware but there will be rooted versions of the stock firmware/rom.
Stay with root, you will be better off, custom roms are usually available within a day after ota updates

Losing OTA

Will I lose the ability to do OTA updates if I flash a custom ROM or custom kernel?
What if I just flash a custom kernel by itself and keep stock ROM?
Currently rooted on stock 4.4.2.

Yup..
If the OTA detects either a Custom recovery, a Custom kernal or any build Prop mods..
the OTA will fail..
What I do.. Its a long method, but it works.. make a Nandroid of your Data partition only..
then flash to stock, then OTA, then install a custom recovery.. then restore your Data partition..
All should be well.. Im sure there is a much easier way like extracting the System.img from the OTA or from the Stock rom,
and Dirty flashing just the System.img.. That should also work.. OTAs are kinda hard on Rooted devices..;'
If your coming from a Custom Rom, you can wait for the Rom Devs to catch up, and then dirty flash the updated rom with out having to do a clean wipe.. But I make a Nandroid of my Data partition and restore it if I need to do a wipe..
Hope this helps

I see. I'll give that workaround a try. But will the OTA fail from rooted stock? Or does the fail only apply to a custom recovery or custom kernel?

If you have a Custom Kernel, and or a Custom Recovery.. or even a Build Prop mod
the OTA will fail.... I do a Full Nandroid just to be sure if there are any mistakes you can revert..
Flash to Stock, do the OTA.. then use Wugfresh's tool to reroot, and reinstall a Custom Recovery like TWRP. Then just restore the Data partition in recovery..
I cant find it, but there is a Thread or 2 on the topic..
I have so many saved it hard to go through them all..
Its where I got my info in the past..

Flash stock rom - Keep Root & CWM

Hello, I am currently rooted and have CWM 6.0.4.3. installed. I'm on CM11 but want to go back to stock.. Is there an easy way to keep root and go back to stock. Want stock for a few functions that ROMS dont seem to be offering but can keep root and CWM ??
Thanks.
Which phone do you have? You could try flashing a pre-rooted stock ROM via Odin. Then use Odin to flash CWM.
Bt its better to firstly install ur stock rom and then again root it as it takes no longer than 5 mins

Ok perfect, thats what I was looking for. Phone btw is S3 - d2att - SGH i747) Sounds good to install the stock rom and re-root.. I'm sure its here but I have searched everywhere to find a tutorial on this and I cannot find a straight answer.
Would you mind giving me the steps or pointing me to a thread that explains how to and has the files in need to download ?

Do you know if there is a step by step on this somewhere ? I dont mind going back to complete stock.. I can just re-root and flash CWM after.
OR
Maybe you could just answer the bigger question : the reason I want to go back to stock is I need to use MHL/HDMI which CM11 doesnt support. I dont want to go back to stock, I would rather even go to another ROM that supports mhl/hdmi.. but if I have to go to stock, than so be it.?
Were you running the stock AT&T 4.3 ROM before you switched to CM11?

Since you installed a custom recovery, that would have tripped the Knox counter which voids the warranty. It's not a problem if the phone is working properly.
Did you update to 4.3 or did it come with 4.3?
You may be better off installing a pre-rooted ROM.

It was quite some time ago but I believe I was on ICS 4.0.. and switch to CM from there. Im not worried about the counter for warranty, that's expired on my unit anyways. I just want to be able to use MHL/HDMI function.. so if fine with flashing pre-rooted.. or stock.. or a different ROM that support MHL/HDMI. Can you recommend the easiest route ?

I asked about 4.3 because the 4.3 bootloader cannot be downloaded. Flashing via mobile Odin will not touch the bootloader or modem.
You could try a pre-rooted rom and then flash a custom recovery via Odin.
I use Philz Touch from here: http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2att

Ok thanks, I will do that. 1 thing I'm not quite sure of is the bootloader situation ? In the first tutorial there is a note : Flashing a prior bootloader can hard/soft brick your device. How do I know ?
I see the steps as:
Extract tar file you downloaded.
Use Odin, put phone into download mode [with phone off, hold vol. down + home + power ], connect to computer and open Odin.
once in odin click the PDA field and select the tar file
Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.
click start and when done let phone reboot.
If you just want a stock, rooted phone with no custom recovery, no plans to flash custom roms, etc. then you can stop HERE.
For my situation, is it just that easy ?
Before flashing, verify the version of your bootloader.

OK I have made an effort to go read and figure out how to find out what version of bootloader on my own.. But i cannot find ? Any chance you know... And could help?
You mentioned your have the i747 and Rogers. Do you have the AT&T s3 (i747) or Rogers/Bell/Telus s3 (i747m)?
What is the most recent stock ROM you had on your phone?
Hey. I got the i747m. As for what was the last stock ROM I had, can't say. I know when I bought the phone it was ICS and I had received and update to jellybean.. But them went to cm10. The tutorial I followed told me had me back everything up, which I did. Have it in a file somewhere on my comp, would that tell me ?

If you are flasjing back to stock you should flash back to the same baseband/bootloader that came stock on your phone.
I'm looking for a stock rooted zip for the sasktel i747m (MF1) that i can flash in CWM....I need to go back to stock to fix a data issue that ive encountered through flashing these new d2lte builds...
Does anyone know if a cwm flashable stock rooted rom exists for Sasktel's i747m with baseband MF1 ???I already have the Odin flashable stock rooted zip but don't have a laptop handy until tuesday....And im pretty sure i cant flash that zip in cwm recovery....

I have not seen a stock mf1 ROM that can be flashed in CWM. You could use mobile Odin to flash back to stock and then flash Philz Touch via desktop Odin later.
OK, so back to my question.. If I have the i747M and bought the phone with ICS.. does this help.?

Hey there Audit, Sorry to bother you again, I just dont know how to move forward from here and neeeeeed some help.
I have been reading for days and days have not found a straight answer for my issue and I dont want to just go ahead and start flashing when I dont know if its the right method ?
I dont know how to get back to stock from where I'm at, I dont know how to figure out what bootloader I have (you asked me)
I have found a couple links on XDA that I can follow, I'm just not sure if they apply to my situation ?
This is a pretty detailed response/tutorial, but I dont know if I can just go ahead with this or not ?

This is also very detailed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
Any help would be greatly appreciated !

If you are sure you have the Rogers i747m and you have never loaded a stock Rogers 4.3 ROM onto your phone, you could use desktop Odin to flash a pre-rooted 4.1.2 ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426.
Flashing the pre-rooted 4.1.2 ROM will return the phone to completely stock, wipe out all installed apps and data, and you will have root. I do not recommend flashing the Rogers 4.3 pre-rooted ROM from the link.
Once you are able to boot into the phone and set things up, you can flash Philz Touch from Odin which will give you a custom recovery on a rooted stock 4.1.2 ROM.

Go back to Stock ROM from Custom ROM

Hey everyone. I'm having some troubles with every custom ROM I install on my S3 T-Mobile (d2tmo) so I want to come back to Stock ROM. I've been watching some tutorials, but lot of them are pretty old, and none is for the Galaxy S3.
So, what do I need to do to go back to Stock ROM?
Should I do a full wipe from recovery (TWRP) and then flash stock ROM via Odin?
The custom ROM I flashed is 6.0.1. The phone had 4.3 when I flashed the custom ROM.
Am I right about what I think I should do?
Thanks in advance. :good:
Yep. The firmware you'll use in Odin should be a .tar.md5 file.
Just flash the latest stock rom from sammobile.com using Odin. No need to do anything before flashing the stock ROM.
After flashing the stock ROM, immediately boot into recovery and perform a factory wipe.

Thank you very much for answering my questions guys! Everything turned out ok!
But I have a doubt about a little think that I hope you could help me.
Before flashing the stock rom I was planning on backing up my efs folder from the TWRP,version 2.8.70 for my s3 (d2tmo), but when I try to do a backup, there no "EFS Folder" option, however, on my other phone, a Galaxy Note 3 Exynos Variant (International Version) when I try to perform a backup there is a EFS folder option for backing up. It is also a TWRP recovery, and same version. 2.8.7.0. I know the phones are completely different, but, why if I'm using the same custom recovery and same version I can't do a EFS Folder backup from the backup option?
I hope I made myself clear about my question. Sorry for my English BTW, it is not my first language.
Thanks in advance!
Maybe this will help although it requires root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/s6-edge-plus/development/updating-t3210266
