Google maps sucks - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Anyone else having issues with Google maps not working properly. It is always showing me behind my actual location or going down a street or two over from where I actually am. Any fix out there for Google maps cause version 7 and 7.5 are not working at all.
When I revert back to version 6 it won't lock on to gps either. It must be my phone e then. Any fix out there?

Which ROM are you running? If you do, how often do you flash Roms. One thing I experienced from being a flashaholic is that after awhile it will poop your GPS. My fix is to return phone back to stock ROM, turn GPS on and go back into recovery and flash ROM of choice. If that's not your situation then you could try multiple GPS fix apps out there

I would say it's not a Google maps issue. As of two days ago I had a nexus 5 with the latest version of maps and I use it frequently without the slightest issue.
Then two days ago I got the note 3 and I notice that navigation is behind a lot. It's the phone not Google maps

I had the same annoying problem. The GPS would take a minute to lock, and would always think I'm a street or two over, and telling me to turn constantly. It annoyed the hell out of me. Strangely I flashed Willl03s CM11 rom and mine locks quickly now and is much more accurate. As earlier mentioned, I've had luck with using Odin and installing the stock rom too.

GPS works fine, hardware-wise, but not in Google Maps.

I am having this issue specifically with Google maps. I did thorough testing driving around tonight-- it does not happen with Waze. For me, the issue is not getting a lock-- it gets the location correct pretty quickly. The issue is that it stops updating maps (even though the phone is clearly getting current, accurate GPS data).
I was split-screening Google Maps and GPS Status. GPS Status updated location frequently and never showed an error range of above about 10-20m.
In Google Maps, the location sticks very frequently-- it will show me in the right location. Then it will stop updating my location (on the map) and catch up with me half-a-minute later or so. It does this same thing in any app that relies on Google maps, too.

Are you guys talking about driving around with google navigation or google maps? With google navigation it works flawlessly for me, if I drive around with google maps open it does tend to jump around for some reason. I dont understand why Navigation would be spot on but not maps.

Well if you don't like Google Navigator, what about the Sprint Navigator? I used it a couple times and it works fine. But I always remove it and just use Google since it's built into Google Maps.
Sprint Navigation. Better then Google. And it gets a gps log on right away. Google Navigation has his issues with it.

[Q] GPS fix for Epic 4G (NOT touch)

Is there a thread for Navigation fix for Epic 4g? I have:
SPH-D700
BASEBAND S : D 700.0.55.FC09
KERNEL 2.6.35.7
BUILD GINGERBREAD.FC09
HARDWARE D700.0.5
The Navigation app (google) will work for a few minutes but then say "GPS Signal Lost".
TeleNav has no problem finding and sticking to GPS signal, but I don't like that app at all (open other app? have to relaunch TeleNav!).
I know there was a fix several months ago but I've reset my phone for unrelated reasons and now the GPS problem is back. I can't find the threads or videos about how to fix it. I remember the fix file was something like 'gps_fix.zip' or 'gpsfix.zip'
Please help. Thanks!

Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
It depends on the problem. The OP said TeleNAV worked fine. That means GPS is ok but for some reason google maps isnt able to keep access to the location function of the phone. The GPS fix flashable file is actually GPS drivers from another phone (facinate, I think) but since it isnt actually a problem with the GPS, reinstalling google apps could solve the problem.

THe GPS_fix file only corrects the problem with only connecting to 4 satellites (with it, you can connect to the max number visible). Sometimes people were having a problem with google nav because it went to 3 satellites and it would lock up. The GPS fix doesn't necessarily fix problems with GNav. So if you want to get more than 4, you would still need this.

Thanks! I ended up deleting Google Maps and reinstalling it along with flashing this GPS fix and solved 95% of my navigation problems. My phone did, however, lock up twice, once when someone called and the other at random but overall, it worked and got me from point a to b!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
Some of your lockups may be related to low memory. For instance Facebook, if you use it, will always stay running, but uses about 11MB of RAM. But when you open it, Facebook uses anwhere from 30-50 MB until you force close it. You may want to clear memory when using navigation. You can use the Taskmanager if you don't have a Taskkiller or Memory Manager app.

New Google maps update draining battery

Hi i did an update on the Google maps app a couple days ago and today I noticed that it has been draining quite a bit of battery. Does anybody know something that can fix this issue or do I just have to wait for an update?
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
Turn off the GPS and exit maps....
Well it never happened before the update and it drains the battery when my phone is in sleep. Also the maps app is not opened.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
Just because it isn't currently on your screen doesn't mean it isn't open... It could still be holding a lock... About all you can do is turn off the GPS, and clear its data.... Either use TiBu to clear it's data, or press and hold the maps icon in your app drawer and drag it up to app info, hit clear data and clear cache... and only turn on the GPS if you're using it...
Ok but is there a way to downgrade the version to the previous one?

There's always a way... But it's not as simple as going to the play store and requesting an older version.... If you have the .apk you can replace the current one with an old one, or if you have an nandroid with an old one, you can unzip the nandroid, go to system/apps and get the maps.apk or just flash to an older backup and not update maps...
but that's not going to ultimately fix your issue... i really think it's just holding a lock all the time and it's the gps... which is why i suggessted turning off your gps, and clearing maps data... and if you keep gps on all the time that's pointless, unless you're navigating because apps can get your location pretty accurately based on the towers...

Which is why I suggested turning off the GPS and clearing maps data... after that, turn it back on if you want, it's the only way to know if it fixes it... just have it off when you clear the data... any issue with a specific app, that's what you do first, clear all that data's memory of anything...
the latest maps update was soft rebooting my dads sensation...
but i know enough from using maps, that if it isnt on your screen (still in background) it DOES drop gps signal, and shouldnt be eating up battery in background.
Try "Autostarts" or something similar and disable maps at startup.

none of these solutions addresses the problem. the update has something that is keeping the phone awake and consuming battery. if I start my phone from OFF and let it sit for an hour, I can look at my battery stats and 10% of it will have been consumed by google maps, without me having ever opened it and without a single GPS query.
Then contact Google about the issue...
Probably Google latitude

Try turning off location services also. I was having issues with my phone properly sleeping and that turned out to be the cause.
The location services was part of my issue. Lowered the batt usage a lot but maps still shows up as a large user of batt.

I went to the apps info and uninstalled the update simple as that.
Edit: TiBu can also uninstall updates

The latest Google Maps is doing the same thing to my phone. I have always had GPS and location services enabled and it never ate up battery like the new Google Maps version. Turning off the GPS and location services is not an option for me so I will have to wait and see if they have a new update soon that addresses the issue. A big problem is if it cannot get a GPS lock due to poor signal from the satellite it will consume a high battery amount trying to find the signal. For now I am able to charge my phone a little bit in the car to make up for the extra battery use.
I'm really not having these issue and today is a day I'm actually using the maps and GPS... I'll keep looking at it and using and report my results... what ROM is everyone with issues running? Sammy or AOSP and which one?
Stock rooted. But I've reverted back to the older version of maps because of the battery drain
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
This didn't drain me at all today... I'll post a screenshot in a second... I used the maps for about 20 minutes, sat put for about 30, used for 20 more or so, and have left my phone alone since...

GPS issues on Rogers note 2

Hi I have a data plan with Rogers so the a-gps should be picking location with maps or waze. I was driving this morning but the gps was searching the whole time. I was on 4g during this time. All 3 of the boxes under location services are checked.
Thanks for any ideas
Depends heavily on the position inside your car.
The closer to a window or the windscreen the better. Try holding it up to the drivers window for a few seconds and see if it locks on.
Even the best GPS isn't going to work if it's completely shielded from the satellites by the metal roof.

Should not have to restart your phone every time you want to use navigation.
I am having the same issue.
The GPS icon won't even display in the info bar without a restart.
Do you think this is a hardware or software issue ??
I notice about once a day on average that the gps icon will show up in the status bar. Sometimes it's only for a second or two and sometimes it's there for a couple of minutes. One time I saw it and it just seemed to last forever (I didn't time it but I'd guess 15-30 minutes).
I've gotten messages a few times about apps not being able to access location services. I don't use maps very much but I had it open the other day and it just froze up on me. No message about gps but I didn't keep the app open very long after it was obvious it wasn't going to work.
I'm on rogers in Ottawa.
Edit: Just played around in maps/navigation and gps flat out doesn't work. It was using cell tower triangulation and searching for gps the whole time. I had to turn on wifi to get an accurate location.

Anyone have a home made solution or is this a warranty issue?

So, after I posted last night I went out side and checked my GPS. Sitting on the steps infront of my building I conected to GPS in google maps and navigation right away - it worked like a charm.
Then I noticed it said "4G" instead of LTE in the status bar. I live downtown surrounded by buildings and I drop to "4G' on my front steps like 90% of the time. So, I get up and walk down the block and my LTE kicks in. Low and behold, I lost GPS. It only happened briefly but I lost the signal during the switch. Then I read that the note 2 only has a-GPS and lacks regular GPS. I don't know a ton about this stuff but I did read that connecting to GPS can sometimes be an issue if you only have a-GPS and your connection sucks.
Hopefully this is something that can be fixed with a software update. Who knows, maybe this is why those of us with the I317/I317M are the last ones to get the OTA update. I'm gonna call rogers today and let them know about the issue and see what they say. I don't wanna go through the hassle of exchanging my phone if every handset has this issue right now.
Are you using the Perseus kernel? If so GPS does not seem to work correctly regardless of which location provider is used. I reverted to stock and my GPS works.

My Rogers Note 2 has no problems with GPS at all. If you're all stock and have spotty connections, than it's your area. Tall buildings would probably hinder GPS fixes initially.

Right now I'm stock/unrooted and I intend to stay that way for the time being. I'll be heading to the mall later so I'll pay a visit to the Rogers store and Wireless Wave (awesome third party wireless store in Canada - they really know their ****) and see what they say.

Sorry I took so long to respond but I got sucked in to the mall lol.
So, long story short. Nobody has any clue and the unusually clueless staff at the rogers store (casual Christmas employees) basically said I need to talk to Samsung cuz my 15 days are up. The guys at wireless wave hadn't heard anything about anybody having any issues with gps. Finally, I went to Telus and found someone who actually had a clue and she said it was the first she'd heard of it and actually recommended I check xda.
On my way home now and then I'll call rogers. I'm not hopeful about the outcome lol.
Stay tuned...

Hello folks,
Just an update .. I have been playing around with waze (free at the appstore) for the last day and a half and my gps has been flawless.
Our GPS issues could more then likely be with the actual Navigation app that comes pre installed.
By the way Waze seems to be very impressive I must admit :good:
I used something similar to that app posted.the ones I have is called gpstest.showing 0 satellites for me.like another poster said, should not have to restart the phone or flash firmware on it for GPS to work.it should work otb
Thanks for the feedback

Interesting... I've had this issue happen only once. Nothing I did would start a GPS search. I waited about 2 hours outdoors in a car. Once I restarted the phone, it had a lock on lots of sattelites within 10 sec.

There are no 4.4.3 ROMs from what I have looked at and if there were, none were TW, stock. Tried the app the previous post mentioned and had no luck with it. Using Waze isn't a solution to the problem, simply a workaround and I hate the UI of Waze, which is why I use Maps instead. There has to be a fix for this issue. I've ordered a replacement device in the meantime.

I don't seem to have the problem for what I use the phone for, but then I don't use navigate often. I do use one of the AGPS updater (can't recall which one at the moment) and I do get a good lock fairly quickly (under 4s).
If there really is an issue however, the fix is in the updated Android 4.4.3 release which as already stated has not yet been released. So there is no "fix".
