[Q] Is anyone else having GPS issues? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I'm running rooted, stock with stock kernel and my GPS signal won't get a lock. I can't use Nav or get my precise location in Maps either. I tried to reset my GPS data as well as download AGPS files, but neither proved successful. Does anyone know how to fix the issue?

yesterday mine wouldnt work at all. today it was really choppy..meaning the blue arrow jumped while driving instead of moving with me. denton, texas

Yes. Are you on 4.4.2? GPS is a known bug on 4.4.2, and 4.4.3 is supposed to fix it.

Unless they're labeled as updated or are 4.4.3, I would assume not.

just a tip, try downloading waze app and see if that fixes it!

I've had no troubles with this phone, but on my gs2 when I did I used a program from play store called "topntp" that worked wonders for getting a GPS fix.

There are no 4.4.3 ROMs from what I have looked at and if there were, none were TW, stock. Tried the app the previous post mentioned and had no luck with it. Using Waze isn't a solution to the problem, simply a workaround and I hate the UI of Waze, which is why I use Maps instead. There has to be a fix for this issue. I've ordered a replacement device in the meantime.

4.4.3 has not been released yet so there will not be any ROMs using it yet.

So what is a fix for the issue?

I don't seem to have the problem for what I use the phone for, but then I don't use navigate often. I do use one of the AGPS updater (can't recall which one at the moment) and I do get a good lock fairly quickly (under 4s).
If there really is an issue however, the fix is in the updated Android 4.4.3 release which as already stated has not yet been released. So there is no "fix".

Just sayin, it is a little better then the main apps page like live updates which includes traffice, the actual time youll get to your destination, accidents, and so on.....your probably the first one that doesnt likes waze......you did ask for a fix......i had the same issue with mine on non-rooted and rooted devices and thats the reason why i use waze, it gets the job done better then the main navi app. but it might be a faulty equipment, get it swapped but note that it will be a refurbished device

Waiting for the next update and hope it would be fixed.

Is there a program called "gps status" installed on your phone? I'm curious because I've seen a lot of people mention gps problems and also mention that app at the same time.

You can try this to see if it works.
1. Uninstall GPS Status
2. On your phone, go to Settings>Applications>Manage applications>All>Maps and then click on Clear data
3. Reboot into Clockworkmod recovery
4. Clear cache and Dalvik Cache
5. Reboot
6. Start Maps first before anything else.
Hope that works for you!

There are known issues with CM7, namely GPS issues; everyone is at a bit of a loss as to the actual cause which is causing the delay in fixing.
Your best option, if you need GPS, is to use a stable ROM and not an RC or nightly (as CM7 is); RCs and nightlies are known to have issues, they are released by the devs in order for the more tech savvy users to help them find bugs.

This. And OP you should go check out the nightly thread for CM7 and post there. There is a good 2 pages of discussion per nightly on JUST the GPS issues everyone is having lol. You'll get more precise answers and help there.
I am now using Ginger Villain 1.5 ROM and my GPS lock comes in seconds., Thank you so much for everyone who helped me find a solution. This is a very big relief to me. Thanks again!!
For some reason, no matter which roms I use the Navigation doesn't seem to work though. I've tried MIUI, Virtuous, CM7, and I even reverted back to stock rom I backed up and the navigation never seems to detect my gps. In maps, the GPS locks my location fine, but turn by turn direction doesn't seem to work.
Could someone maybe point me in the right direction?

Are you sure you are using GPS in maps and not your WIFI (which is mapped by google...) to position yourself?
Turn WIFI off, get outside in the middle of your garden and then start maps. Does it position you to the spot or does it stay inaccurate? If it's the latter, your GPS never (?) worked and you got positioned by the location of your WIFI.
What is your radio version (26.0x.xx.xx) and which ROM are you on exactly?
GPS fix? Try flashing radio.
Had the exact same issue, found that all my GPS issues were tied to radio. Flash back to most recent stock version and see if that fixes it. Worked right away for me, regardless of GPS Status, cache cleansing, etc. YMMV

Using my HSPA network (no wifi) and Google Maps "My Location", the accuracy is 600 meters. I'm not sure if that's considered working, but the most frustrating part is that Navigation always just says Searching for GPS. I started off from stock radio radio rom post OTA, then tried to flash:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959488
People said it helped, but tt didn't. Now I'm back on the one listed as "Vision_RADIO_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26" at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809.
Rom is currently QND MIUI 1.3.5 version 1.3. But liked I said, none of the roms seems to be working. Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: I just realized what you meant. I turned off the "Use Wireless Network Feature" and my GPS DOESN'T work! Any way to fix this???

Flashed latest radio and got instant GPS lock (8 satellites) on CM7 nightly #15. Didn't work before with shipping radio.
Latest radio I'm using btw is 12.28h.60.140f_26.06.02.27
Also, ymmv, I've heard some people saying they got big battery drains going to the latest radio, and also some had the same result going to the AUS radio (which apparently has good service).
@symbolism: Ugh, I have no idea about MIUI, but the latest radio does/should fix GPS problems on the latest CM7 nightlies. Anyone else experiencing the same on MIUI in any of the MIUI threads...?
@martonikaj: the AUS radio *is* the latest radio It's the 26.06.something... And I'm one of those experiencing excessive battery drain. It seems to be the connection to the network (Network standby) which sucks my battery empty...

Note 2 has no GPS signal?

Hi all,
I just bought a slightly used Note 2 yesterday. Today, I tested the GPS and put it side by side
with a Galaxy S2 and my old gs2 picked up the GPS just fine, but the Note 2 did not even pick
up a single satellite even after 30 minutes. The GS2 picked up all satellites in 30 seconds sitting
right next to it.
I turned on GPS and use wifi/network location too.
This is a stock unrooted Note 2 running 4.1.2 stock OS.
Is there anything else I can do and try? I'm desperate. I searched and read all the posts on google and here
and found no solution.
Thank you
-mike-
I had the same problem the other day. I had to use odin to go back to an earlier stock version. The latest stock version did not fix it. Everything works great now.

Mine was unrooted and running stock 4.1.2. Are you saying that the problem is in the stock OS?
Is this a common problem? Which stock version I need to go back to?
Thank you.
No not a problem with stock. If you haven't flashed anything to your phone then I highly doubt its a software conflict. I've read on some Samsung phones the small screws on the back of the phone become loose causing no gps signal. You could try tightening them to see if that helps. My gps failed because I flashed a Verizon note 2 rom that I've used in the past but the newest version doesn't seem to play well. The stock version I flashed was from January. You can find all the stock roms in the development section here.

I tried the screws and they were all tight. I guess I will have to try different rom...
My GPS couldn't even find a single satellite sitting outdoor...
I would flash back to an earlier stock version and then update to the latest version and see if that fixes it. Just backup your data/apps/pictures first because you'll lose everything on your internal storage when you flash a stock rom with odin.

From the D's GN2
Thanks. I already tried it before I posted and it did not help at all. Mine did not show the gps indicator on the status bar either.

What did you do with the app to make yours worked?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 4
I turned the GPs on while the app was open and saw the Gps indicator light up then I immediately opened maps and let it lock on my location I guess in my case it just kicked the gps in the pants I haven't had any problems since.
From the D's GN2
Did the gps test app show the number of satellites it locked on? Google map may not be a good indication because it uses wifi/data to locate you if it couldn't find satellite. Try something like 'GPS Test' to verify the number of satellite it locked on.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 4
- just to make sure nothing else conflicts, I did a factory reset. It's running stock JB 4.1.2. Unrooted. Stock recovery.
- when I turned on GPS in setting and started google map, the GPS icon on the status bar did not even display
and of course google map could not get a fix on my location. This is outdoor. To be sure that my test location was good, I put my wife's Galaxy S2 next to it and turn on both. The S2 acquired position under 30 seconds with 14 satellites.
- i d/l GPS Test and it did not show any satellite
- I d/l GPS Status Toolbox and it did not fix it
- I d/l "TopNTP" to clear/download AGPS data and it did not fix it.
- I then sent it back to Samsung. The repair log said:
"problem found: cannot download sw/PRL. Solution: updated s/w. Reset. Quality Control passed. "
(when I saw 'cannot download sw/PRL', I googled it and I already suspected that it wouldn't be fixed. As most people
I found on google when they sent a phone back to Samsung all have this line "cannot download sw/PRL')
I got it back after 7 days and it was exactly as before I sent it out. Same firmware version, same OS version, same everything. True enough, same problem. How competent can they be? I stated that the problem is "GPS could not acquire satellite". How hard was it to test it? Just turn it on, turn on GPS in settings, run google map. Their quality control couldn't even do that and signed it off.
I called them again and I'm sending it back again. This is getting frustrated.
I still have the gut feeling that this is not a hardware problem, but what else I can try? I tried everything.
What are my options if they still can't fix it 2nd time? It's still under warranty (for another month).
Thanks.

Thanks! I will sure give it a try if it still does work when I get it back. It's now at Samsung repair center again.
I appreciate your reply.
Problem solved!!!!!!
I have a Note 2. The GPS did not work. No white circle on the status bar when GPS is turned on and it did not pick up any satellite. I tried everything including factory reset, restore OEM ROM from sammobile and nothing worked. I sent it back to samsung. The 1st time they updated some sw and sent it back to me. Nothing changed. Not working. I sent it back the 2nd time. they replaced some power management chips. I got it this morning and it did not work either. I called Samsung again and they remotely accessed my Note 2 and they couldn't figure out so they asked me to send it back the 3rd time. Before I sent it back, I followed a reply here on xda using the diagnostic code *#197328640# :
mainmenu>UMTS>Common>NV REBUILD>Restore NV Default
I selected it, it restored the NV from default and it rebooted by itself. When it came back, everything worked!!!!!
Before I tried this, I was l already on the phone with Samsung tech support for 2 hours and they even remotely access my Note 2 and they could not figure it out!!!

Front face camera doesn't work (update coming or not?)

I got pissed off fixing the front face camera issue on my Nexus 7 and gave Google a call. Basically, its says "cannot connect to a camera" and crashes on stock camera app. Skype crashes as well.
I've did all the resets and a hard reset as well, and none of the methods seem to help, and I believe the rocket science is not needed to get the front face camera working. The device runs stock android.
I've called Google twice and described the issue, and they always say its a known software issue and I should wait for a fix. I tried to google it, but haven't found anything on this particular issue, so I think the device is defective and my update will never come.
Is this really a software issue?

Its not an issue on all hardware, only a select number of Nexus devices. But, they are stating that 4.4.3 will correct this issue, among other fixes including the camera focus. Basically 4.4.3 is for fixing the bugs, not really for updating features.
Both cameras work here.

[Q] Weak GPS?

My note 3 works great, except the GPS.
Outside= no problem
Inside any building= takes 15 minutes, if it locks on at all!
My old phone has absolutely no problems in the same spot (HTC Dinc2).
Is this normal for the note 3, or should I consider a replacement?
I've tried all the "Fix-it" type apps from the playstore, with no change.
Edited: Forgot to mention that I'm still on jelly bean. Holding off on kitkat for a while.
Did anyone notice an improvement on KK, if their note had gps problems before?
Should I try a custom rom? I'm stock rooted atm.

Same problem here, running KK, all stock (not rooted). Lucky if I get a fix at all at times. Oddly, i've found that if I boot into recovery, do a factory reset and clear the cache, GPS works just fine till I reboot the phone. After the reboot, it reverts to the same ole GPS problems. Seems like some type of software issue to me, odd that it would exist in JB and KK though...

Didn't they get a software update? Though IIRC, a lot of people returned their phones for a replacement with a newer radio.
I have the same problems with GPS on my unlocked n900t.
It worked in the beginning and then almost stopped. I couldn't get any satellites on the street using GoogleMaps.
I wiped all the data and installed cyanogen 11 4.4.4 ROM, after that GPS was working good during the 1st day however I was loosing the signal in San Francisco downtown among the skyscrapers. But yesterday it didn't work again at all.
I tried TopNTP but it seems it didn't help at all.
BTW NFC doesn't work on Cyanogen11 either, so I can't use GoogleWallet now.
What can I do to fix that?
Started thinking about turning to Iphone more and more

GPS SatNav Failure

I have found the first real issue with the M8.
The GPS fails during navigation and cannot get proper lock. That meant it kept trying to recalculate routes etc...
My friends have also had same issue.
Location settings were set on the best option too. Full mobile signal and internet as well.

Hardware related or do you think it's a problem with the OS?
No problem on GPS here. I get a quick lock and it stays on.
Using Sygic.

Google navigation and TomTom both failed on different M8s.
It works for a bit, but when it goes wrong you will know about it.
I am hoping only software, but I have no idea of issues or how to fix it.
If you are rooted or unlocked, try this GPS config ... its for quick good AGPS lock before actual GPS one.

Prefer not to root as phone rocks. And rooting will void warranty of my new phone.

Try installing GPS tools, it does a few logic jiggery pokery things in the background that may help

Using with Co-Pilot Premium and works great. Locks on quickly and stays on. No problems at all.
Can't say I've noticed the issue. I use Waze. My Note II used to constantly lose GPS fix. Was irritating! Hope it doesn't start on my M8.

I didn't know people who prefer not to root actually use XDA.

I'm not adversed to anythng BUT I have just bought a £500 plus phone. I would rather not void a warranty yet.... also some of my apps won't work on a rooted device.
I have no problem on my phone. all is ok.
GPS has been the best I've ever experienced on a smartphone. Locks quickly and accurately and the only device ever to get a decent lock inside my concrete flat.
However, yesterday the GPS failed completely whilst driving with clear view of the sky. A reboot fixed it and it was then rock solid again.
That's the only time it's done it in about a week since owning it with about 20 hours driving with it.
I'm hoping that means it's a software issue somewhere.

I can confirm that my GPS nav has been broken for about a month or more, using Waze and Google Maps
The latest System update released on 6/15/2014 has resolved the issue

Yep gonna agree works perfect with copilot. Also better than sygic imo. I also wouldn't bother with Google navigation. Better to use an offline satnav app.
I have this problem too... Doesn't seem to matter which app one are using, it also happens with my golf app... And the only way to fix it, is to reboot the phone.. This is really annoying...
It seems to be related to bluetooth use... If I use BT to play music/listen to audiobook at the same time as I use the navigation app, then I have this problem.. If I turn off the BT, then the problem does not seem to appear... I am saying seem to, because it seems to be random when this occurs so not 100% sure that turning off BT fixes the problem but so far I have not had this problem when BT is off..
I also thought this was fixed in the latest update but yesterday it happend again....
