could you suggest a suitable rom and how to install, could I use a official stock rom for (sim free) phones, or only unofficial roms like CWM 10.2
I am trying to learn here but I keep getting conflicting answers on what I can and cant do for instance some say I should tick repartion box in odin others say no,its the same with the phone being locked to provider, some say it needs to be unlocked, and some say it does not well I have a phone that is very wearing to use with its official update that is supposed to make run better and so much conflicting information that I have had just about enough, please please please will some one point me in the right direction so that I stand a chance of sorting my phone without bricking it thanks.....
P.S.sorry for the essay but I am so frustrated I thought these forums were to help people like me who want to learn............

-No theres no reason to tick repartition unless you're flashing a 3 part firmware.
-im pretty sure it doesnt have to be carrier locked
-jb update for us was a disaster :/
You thought pretty wrong. Many people left xda because of the community :/

Nice one, JB, is running smooth and quick, after reading about a ram hack on this site , which has increased my max ram to 624mb instead of
a mere 482mb I was left with after updating to JB, so for now I shall play with this until I get bored then it will be time to bite the bullet and come into the light and join the ever growing community that believe in freedom.... thanks for your help Teddytsen

Rooting will give you simunlock. However, there is no guarantee it will work for all carriers. There are some it does not work with.

Google for a website that sells them.
You bought it in the uk, did you buy it from amazon uk or any online service? Contact the seller to see if he can help you.
I don't know what you mean by booting method.
Right now, all I can say is google is your friend.

Yes. Use the ace hack kit only to unlock/root your phone. Do not use any other method. You can flash anything in the dev section. Read the op (first page) before flashing. It will list what works and what bugs are listed.

As I know, all Dhd can be rooted by AAHK you must only follow the instructions.
As for me, the best ROM we have today for our device is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778202 there are few bugs only, but not critical for me If you want the ROM with Sense, look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792074 but this ROM works more slowly

[Q] Rooting toolkit for xperia arc & JB

Hi All,
Since this is my first post I am unable to ask this in the relevant thread so apologies. I was just wondering if the excellent rooting toolkit posted on the other thread is available with JB instead of ICS? I know there are guides to flashing xperia arc LT15i to JB but none I can find that don't require the bootloader unlocked..
Thanks for your support

Why would you need it? There is no JB for our phones, so it is not needed. All custom ROMs are already rooted, so you don't need to do anything.
Perhaps I misunderstand the process then, I understood that in order to upgrade phone I had to have bootloader unlocked OR phone rooted. I am basing this assumption on the information I found androidgadgematic.com/2012/09/root-sony-xperia-arc-lt15-arc-s-lt18-ics.html you mention that there is no JB for xperia but I have seen several vids on youtube that claim otherwise, but again I stand to be corrected.
In essence I have an xperia arc LT15i running GB that I cannot unlock the bootloader on and I am trying to find a way to upgrade it to JB. I have been searching here, youtube, xperia blog etc but cannot find a way to do this with bootloader locked. Then I came across the method linked earlier that seems to do the job for ICS but would like JB.
Hope my rambling makes sense...
thanks again for your time

It amazes me how many new members sign up here, come straight to Q&A claiming to have searched, this that and the other then ask a question which they could find the answer for in the stickys prefixed [GUIDE] in General.
Click the first link in my sig and read from start to finish, then you might understand a bit better.
with respect I have spent over 2 days searching this site for information, perhaps I mis-understood it or was looking at the wrong info but that does not change the fact that I have genuinely tried to find an answer myself prior to posting. I think this is borne out by both the xda link and the link to androidgadgematic. It is unfair of you to assume that I am misrepresenting myself.
I would much prefer to have found a solution myself as it is faster and avoids these situations I will have a look at the links you have indicated
thanks

I assume it based on the fact that 9 out of 10 users who say they have searched actually haven't which 9 times out of 10 is usually proven by a Google search of the actual thread title they started theirs with, and if you have actually spent 2 days looking then I'm amazed you don't seem to have read any of the stickys or JB type ROM threads either which would have answered your query of having a locked boot loader.
Anyway, let us know how you get on.
I take your point and thanks for the links I have since rooted phone and installed CWM, Someguyfromhell mentioned no JB for Arc yet I see ROMs here which is somewhat confusing can you clarify?
Thanks

The clues in the title - [CM10 Based][MIUI CM10 Based], it's not officially been released and as someguy has already said custom ROMs will be rooted anyway so you don't have to. First thing to do now you're rooted is to backup your Phone in CWM then start looking at flashing ROMs.
So after a lot of reading tonight I think I see my issue, I checked se site and ICS is available for LT15i but clearly not released by my carrier (PC companion says I am up to date on (GB 3.0.1.A.0.145 sigh). I could install the stock rom if my phone was able to have bootloader unlocked (*#*#7378423#*#* bootloader not shown in configuration menu) and apparently there is no way to do this other than pay for it which sucks!
The only alternative is to install a custom ROM that works with a locked bootloader but I cannot figure out which ones will work for me so for now I think I just have to wait for my carrier or fork out €€€...
Thanks for your help and patience

You don't need unlocked bootloader to install stock ROM. If you do it via Flashtool.
I have tried installing 4.1.A.0.562 (perhaps this is not the correct ROM) using flashtool (using flashmode) and it bombed out then I tried xpart cwm but same result just looked at your ROM link and will try again with 4.1.B.0.431
Cheers

Hi irish, just a few comments, not sure how you've read my guide and come away with the conclusion that you need to unlock the bootloader to update your ROM or why you're trying to flash 2 old ROMs when I link to the latest 587. Patience is key.
ok so a severe case of brain fart I think, back when I tried this at the start of the week the flashboot failed hence my assumption that it was related to bootloader locked and hence my chasing down rabbit holes began. Looks like it was all down to having MTP enabled!! I am flashing A version of 587 I found earlier in the week (could not fine a link a 587 ROM on your post but this post indicates that 431 is oldest for LT15i.....?. Anyway it is flashing now and I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again for your assistance. I think I have been reading so many posts and hoping back and forth I have tied myself in knots
Thanks again

It can happen. Sorry about the link, I wrote a guide specifically for the Arc which you can find HERE and forgot I'd removed it from my sig so my bad on that. You can find a 587 ftf HERE

So sorry I had thought I had posted an update, needless to say all worked well for me. Thanks again for all the help

anyone willing to add me on skype or some chat for guide?

through the rooting process? ive been using blackberry phones since 2005. and in october i got xperia arc s. but all these things are new to me, flash, kernel, unlocked bootloader, etc. And Im scared that Ill ruin my phone if i do it on my own. So anyone willing to help out just pm me your skype and Ill add you. thanks in advance
and what confuses me the most is that there are so many ways to root the phone, some oneclick and other stuff.
Go to the stickys and read the guides, if you can read you can root.
thanks for your reply but this community seems to have a huge lack of understanding for new android useres
MsihoB where do you want to start?
Im not the most advanced user but I know how to root my phone (with out breaking it) so what do you want to know?
Essentially all you need to know about rooting is that it allows you to install certain apps which need elevated permission to perform some tasks.
I mean if you stumble upon an App in the Playstore which clearly says that it needs root access and you really want the app then root your phone. If not there isnt too much point in doing it.
Although rooting is probably the most interesting thing for you at the moment.
Kernels. Basically allow you to overclock/underclock your phone to run faster (of course that depends on the kernel etc)
Bootloader. Ive got my problems with that too at the moment. Mine is locked and cant be unlocked unless I pay for it (which I do not intend to do) and so I can not install custom firmwares on my phone.
Custom Firmwares are things like Cyanogenmod (google it), There is a Cyanogenmod 10 for the Arc S which brings Jelly Bean (the latest Android version which isnt officially supported by the Arc S) to your phone and adds some neat features. Its well worth getting it but of course depends if you really need it.
Flashing. Flashing really just means installing (in simplest terms). Essentially you can flash a firmware or a kernel.
If you need any more help ill be happy to help as much as I can.

Because new Android users ignore everything they've agreed to when signing up to a developing website.

Sorry but I'm reporting this crap because you're clearly just been completely and utterly lazy.
1. Used completely idiotic generic title.
2. Clearly not spent 5 minutes searching/reading.
Also watch this XDA official video..
No you can´t do it, couse the botloader and the knox app has been preventing of the downgrade, may in the future some one can give us a solution bot today we don´t have.

[Q] SGH-M919N - How do I root & get a custom ROM?

Hi! I just recently got my GS4 from MetroPCS (SGH-M919N) and I want to modify my device! I had a LG Optimus L9 before but couldn't modify it due to the locked bootloader. I'm not sure if my GS4 bootloader is locked or unlocked, so if anyone can help me out with that I would appreciate it.
I'm looking to root my phone and get a custom ROM on it, or stock 4.4 if possible (I have 4.3 right now). Can anyone point me to the right direction in doing all this?

It's not very hard to find the information you're requesting! Nearly all of the members of this forum SEARCHED and found the information you want, did it on their own, however it requires reading..... It would benefit you by reading, so that you understand all of the aspects of getting to your goal WITHOUT creating a BRICK! You would get the overall understanding of what the pitfalls are and the benefits as well. You could be spoon fed the single area that you can get the job done, but won't understand anything about what you're doing, or anything..... You won't be really able to choose any of the finer points of what you want the final product to be....
It's YOUR phone, and if you want to have the phone as YOU want it, would you not agree that'd be the best result?
Read, explore, and see what's available, and THEN, make your decision on what to do. I strongly advise you to do the "homework" on what avenues you have as options and you'll be better off in the long run. You are aware there is no "school" on how to do these things and just about all of the developers and tweakers on this forum READ to get all their knowledge on this wonderful phone....
Just my two cents and if you don't know how to search, here's an example using google:
Root SGH-M919N XDA<enter>
You'll be amazed how much information you'll find..... MUCH MORE than anyone could give you in a response to your question....
Good Luck and Aloha....
What Bobo is trying to say is that Google is your friend. Just add "XDA" to your search and you'll get more hits from xda - development

Clockworkmod (is my custom recovery of choice).
Once rooted you can flash. I usually use ROM manager.
